@@JCResDoc94 I can understand why bibleproject is soft peddling the destruction of the Canaanites in the promised land; genocide as we know it in the modern era is motivated by pride, selfishness, and racist hatred. This is in stark contrast to God's judgement of the Canaanites which was because of their wickedness; not Israel's righteousness. Whether by water, or fire and brimstone, or a foreign army, God judges the world for their transgressions and His people for their sin. This is not hyperbole! The people of Israel were warned not to lust after other gods or marry those marked for destruction; of course it was foretold they would disobey and be judged for it. The Canaanites would be a thorn in their side they could not get rid of. That's the reason the laws in Leviticus and Deuteronomy point to a remnant of Canaanites as Moses prophesied. God clearly wanted them destroyed, but Israel disobeyed. The consequences of Israel's disobedience is evident throughout the Bible. The lesson is disobeying God is the travesty; His judgement is nothing to be ashamed of.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9 Keep making disciples guys, the work you are doing is such a blessing to the Church!
@@tamzynlewis9701 The verse is in context in war not life problems. Also Joshua 6:20-21 So the people shouted, and the trumpets were blown. As soon as the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people raised a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. Then they utterly destroyed all in the city, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and asses, with the edge of the sword.
@@biotorex8999 It's still connected tho The Lord Our God is with Us wherever we go. Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say unto these things? if God is for us, who is against us?
You said the map was boring. I thought the same about the names that were repeated in the book of Numbers and elsewhere, but being patient and reading through them all has resulted in the joy of seeing those names repeated throughout the Bible! It has helped me make connections. I truly believe every word in the Bible has special meaning. If the boundary lines of the children of Israel are drawn out for us, it is deserving of our attention, just as the names of the children of Israel are! I love the videos that you guys made, thank God He has gifted you with such wisdom and talent! What a blessing!
@@joelbustamante9906 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity (1 Timothy 4:12).
I love the story of Rahab, brought me to tears. God wanted to drive out the canaanites but in one moment of faith by Rahab God admired her faith and was extremely pleased with her that he accepted her into the Israelites and also let her marry with one of the men of the Israel and also through her lineage came Jesus! Shows how God loves us and our faith in him means everything to him.
I try to make it a habit now that whenever I move on from one book to another, I first watch these videos. Thank you! These vids give me glance at what I’m gonna encounter and remember them better. Side note: I’m currently reading the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, right now I have started reading Joshua (obviously).
Same hereeee!! It's helps me understand what I read and gets me thinking oh yeah, I rember when that happened and a summary then feel satisfied and move on to the next 😁😁 and I'm on the book Judges, what about you?
Same here! It really helps summarize and clarify things! I also recommend the book "the Bible form 30,000 feet" as well. It takes a similar approach, with a touch of wit and humor along the way and goes a little bit more in depth into each book
As an agnostic/atheist I appreciate these videos for how straightforward and non preaching they are. I want to hear y'all beliefs without trying to be converted or talk down to. Keep up the great work very educational and entertaining
So I’m not trying to convert you, but a lot of us Christians believe Joshua was one of the few greatest warriors in The Bible because he conquered a lot of kingdoms. The Bible in general is a Book 📖 (it literally means “The Book” in Greek) that shows the failures of 👑 kingdoms to pursue God, and they then result in their Downfall.
You can't be exposed to something without the spirit behind it. When you hear the Word of God, the spirit will be behind it. When you hear something not of God, you won't hear his spirit there. Atheism carries no Spirit of God, you can't expect hearing God's Word to be listening to atheist teachings. You will feel something you're not used to, you may be converted based on your free will, you may feel convicted.
God is so good! Yesterday I was praying so hard and asking God to forgive me for failing my 13 year old cousin who's our adopted daughter. She is so disrespectful and difficult and no matter how hard I try I make mistakes and fail her. I dreamed last night about a difficult teen boy whom I couldn't get through to about his sinning. It seemed important I know his name so I asked him twice. His name "Michael Joshua." I woke up needing to know what it meant and here I am watching and now understanding that God is telling me, "God will deliver trust and wait." WOW!!
Thank God For Your Heart. Hurting children respond w tremendous hurt but w time it will be 💯 turned around. Let God be God and you look in ur own hurts to see her
I just finished Joshua today and I was wondering about so many battles and deaths. You guys when straight to my doubt ! Thank you Lord for this channel and for your hard work guys.
Why doubt? We must have a healthy fear of God. Many people inaccurately fear the devil more than God bc they sense God's position is weak. It's not always pretty, but God will destroy evil.
I'm with you Priscilla. We are Blessed that Jon and Tim can clarify and answer some serious questions. It also makes us true "wrestlers with God." Which He, God, seems to approve. [Job] Does not the name Israel mean "wrestler with God" or "Fight with God." In the book of JOB the question He wrested with was WHY? Are we Not reading about these battles and asking "Say What?" Explain. Correct me if I'm wrong; I think you (like me) are searching for understanding and truth. Tim said the guy who stole then lied about it was punished harshly. Yup, that's right. They killed him and his entire family. That was after he confessed the truth. Yeah... I get it. He confessed because he was caught in his lie. The chapters were clear that every living thing was killed and the cities were burnt to the ground. So, yeah... I had questions! Mainly; how can a God who wipes out entire civilizations care about me the individual? This presentation by The Bible Project brought peace to my heart. I'm thrilled The Bible Project exists. 🙏 I'm still learning.
3:30 - 3:35 I REALLY needed that. I've gone through a lot in recent years and I thank God for this reminder that He will deliver me and all I need to do is continue to trust Him and wait.
At 75 years old and having been a Christ follower and Bible reader since 15, I’m really blown away by this brilliant app and Tara Leigh Cobble’s insightful recap each day. Thank you…all of you who are playing a part in making this app available. My enthusiasm only grows as I share ReCap with people in my church and family and any other sphere of influence God gives me.
This just made it more clear for me why those wars and battles were phrased in such a way. It also makes me better understand the intention of God as well as the use of language which is very important. This is why I think it's very dangerous to look at God's words skin deep without any prior knowledge to the context.
I turned back to God and started to read scripture on May 2018. On completing each book I see the respective "Read Scripture" video on "THE BIBLE PROJECT" to summarize it. Today I completed Joshuva. Thanks a lot for your great work
“I’m a man in the land of giants, I’m the cry of a thousand dreams, I’m the shoulders holding a nation High enough to still believe. We remember the chains we carried, Won’t forget about the day we left. Every heart still beats with hope Of a promise made, a promise kept. No mercy in the hot noon desert No shadow’s gonna block the sun. Still covered in dust from our yesterdays And days to come. Every turn is a new temptation, You want to bow down to someone new. As for me and my generation, We will serve no one but You.”
This is really helpful for me because I needed to do research about the book of Joshua... You explained 70% of the book of Joshua for a 16 yrs old boy clearly.... Thank you so much..... God Bless You.....
I know this is a year later, but please see my comment above. God does not use hyperbole, and this video is teaching dangerous information. God killed everyone on the planet except for Noah and his family during the flood, so why couldn’t he do the same to the Canaanites? Believe me, I know how troubling it is. I struggled with it for a very long time (but my comment on this video explains what I learned). If I can be of any assistance, don’t hesitate to reply.
Perfect timing for me! Our kids church just finished studying Joshua. This makes a beautiful summary before we start Judges today. Thank you for your hard work making these fabulous videos
The reason I like these videos so much is because it makes you more curious about the Word in the bible. Hopefully people will go and READ the Gospel and look into the details for themselves. I've read the entire bible once and going over it again because every time I read it I receive a new message. The bible is how God speaks to us. Thank you for your wonderful work
Thank you so much for explaining the Bible like this! It's fixing my confusion on why the Bible is True and Just when so many of God's decisions and acts would be so questionable to me now. It's really helping me find my Faith and understand everything that happened back then.
@@Yesica1993 because some of His punishments seemed too harsh compared to today's punishments for the same crimes and commandments from Old Testament seemed unnecessary like no eating octopus and pork as well as the "women should be silent in church" stuff.
Being named Joshua (after the one in the Bible of course) I strive to live up to my name and be more like the Biblical Joshua every day. He was a pinnacle of Godly manhood and a true warrior/conqueror. With Christ being my ultimate hero, Joshua takes a close second. There is nowhere in the Bible (at least that I can remember) where Joshua falls short, gives into sin, and faces judgment. Of course he did sin, being human, but never to the extent of it being important enough to record. Apart from Christ Jesus, I believe Joshua is the human standard that all Christian men should strive to be like. I strive every day. Thank you for the video and encouragement!
Absolutely love this channel! I am currently reading the old testament and after every book I read, I always watch the summary afterwards so it helps me to see the full picture :) Thank you, be blessed ✝🙏
For me, the Bible Project is a lifelong dream fulfilled. Something tells me that "no one can imagine how far and deep this work will go". But this is sure, the project is like a red cinder on a field of dry straws: a great and everlating flame has been set in motion. May God bless every contributor in this project. Amen.
I've only just started the series, and I have to tell you guys how thankful I am for these videos! I think a testimony of how inspired this project was is that it really makes me want to open up my scriptures and read more about the story of God's plan for humanity and how it unfolded. Again, thank you guys SO much for doing this. God bless you!
My wife and I are newly devoted listeners. Thank you for your factual presentations. May God bless your continued work in presenting us with the TRUE gospel of Jesus.

hey my class watches your bible summary videos whenever we start reading a new section in the bible. we watched this today and honestly i really like your videos
You guys literally are posting videos right as I finish a book! I just finished Deuteronomy today, and Joshua is ready to watch! I had the same thing happen three weeks in a row!
I am just amazed how you explain the scriptures and how it comes to together to bring about more understanding. Thank you for what you all are doing. You all are a true blessing!!
Your ink illustrations and Bible explanations are blessing me. I watch your videos and think, Okay! NOW I understand!! Thank you for letting God use you to bring clear understanding to His Word! And may God continually bless you and your ministry in the Name of Jesus Christ!
I just trying to know who God is, and my friend gave me this channel and videos to watch. And so grateful because through these videos I learnt and understand easier than just read the bible. These videos are for review what will I read and so helpful. May God bless you, all! The producers, narrators, and even the animators. Love ya❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Thank you so much for illustrating the Book of Joshue. I really love seeing everything as one big picture and a congruent story. Joshua was such an interesting individual, and proved that if we trust God things will go right. Amen 🙏
I started reading the book of Joshua a few days ago and chapter 10 bothered me, the violence described didn’t sit right with me but thank you for explaining, I get it now!
Just wanted to thank you guys for this video. I was struggling through Joshua, trying to understand why God would order such carnage and this REALLY helped. Thank you!!
Can you help me understand? I've watched it several times, but still can't grasp the idea. Why the Canaanites, why not the Israelites who did similar stuff under Moses' watch? Or maybe I'm off base here...
Thank you for this thoughtful summary. I have had a hard time with the violence, and the only thing I could think was, God is judge, never us. If he includes someone in enacting justice, that’s his call. But God is always merciful to a sincere repentant person who turns before it is too late. How amazing is He!
Thankyou people at the Bible Project, i love watching these videos before i start reading the story for myself. It helps put things in perspective.... God bless you all, and Praise JESUS the KING of kings and LORD of lords.
Woow!! Just amazing. You guys ur simply the best. Thank you Lord for this Ministry and the wisdom and understanding he poured over you; for his glory and for us to be part of it. Thank you
Once again, so many good things and some really interesting points brought up in these videos. Although even if we do read those Bible passages of the laws on what Israel was and was not allowed to do, doesn't necessarily give the full picture of what the Canaanites were like. Extra research is necessary to really get the full weight of how bad these people were. Even if God DID choose to commit genocide, why is that wrong? Everything God does is right, and he doesn't have to give a reason for anything. (Deut 32:4) The fact that he does is for us a kindness, not a right. The Canaanites made it their life goal to oppose God and his people, and just because a few changed, doesn't mean he didn't intend to get rid of the entire group of people (genocide) just as he did with Sodom and Gomorrah. No one has the right to question God's decisions. He is always right, and he always does what's best. Warning: The following historical facts may be extremely disturbing for some readers. But this is reality: Not only did the Canaanites do human and child sacrifice, but they also did things that defiled all nature (if you look up what Satanist's do, you'll get an idea), having sex with anything that moves. If God wanted to completely wipe them out, he wasn't the only one, because these people forced their worship on everyone and anything, collected people from all over and children from all over for their hauntingly degenerate sacrifices so that they can gain extra power, kidnapping them from their families off the street and then raping them, small children, from age of 2 and upward (even freshly aborted fetuses) to gain special creative and magic abilities. They'd keep the babies or cut up flesh in a jar, bathe in feces, urine and semen with them while cutting up animals after having sex orgies with them and then boiling them in their mother's milk (hence that seemingly out of place law in Deuteronomy: "Don't boil a kid in its mother's milk. I am Yahweh."), assuming they even had a mother left to kill. It's not just a matter of certain strange worship practices--it's a matter of bringing planet earth along with every single one of her people to complete and shocking ruin, and in a very God-defying malicious manner. These people DESERVED genocide. If you say in the Ezekiel video that God was justified in punishing Israel, and that they truly "deserved' it, Canaanites all the more so. The few that changed did not mean God did not eventually wipe these people out completely. It's easy to say "God would never do that" now since we can all say it from the comfort of our own computer, but let's be real. These people were a constant danger to society and anyone of us could have been next had we lived then. Has respect also left us because fear of imminent danger has? I can't imagine you would be able to walk up to God's throne yourself and call part of his letter to the human race "BORING!" now would you? Disrespecting the Most High is no way to curry his favor on Judgment Day. I'd tell you to watch yourself but God can speak for himself.
Hey Michaelangelo, we are all sinners saved by the grace of a loving God. I mean no ill intent, nor want you to take this in any condescending tone. We are both brothers in Christ and I say this out of love. I want to address some of the points you made. "I can't imagine you would be able to walk up to God's throne yourself and call part of his letter to the human race "BORING!" now would you? Disrespecting the Most High is no way to curry his favor on Judgment Day. I'd tell you to watch yourself but God can speak for himself." Actually I can imagine because I have in prayer told the Lord that I don't like reading Leviticus because its boring :) I have told him that some of the history in the Old Testament doesn't apply to the age we are in now. Did God smite me from the earth in wrathful anger? No, through time He showed me that without the history we wouldn't be in the age we are now. Bible Project was being honest, candid, and sincere about how we all (you included) have viewed the Bible at one time or another. Do you think God doesn't know that we find parts of His word less interesting than others? Do you think that He loves us any less? In order to find part of His Word less interesting then others it would mean that we are actually trying to engage and understand it. It shows desire Michaelangelo, which our Lord loves to see. Bible Project also expounded on the overall message of God, and did not need to go into detail about the disgusting aspect of the Canaanites. What is there to gain from knowing the graphic detail of what the Canaanites did as a culture, as opposed to just calling them morally corrupt? Nothing. If God wanted detail in His Word, He would have called and used man to place the detail there. We know the dimensions of the ark, the dimensions of the first temple, the dimensions, fabric or the tabernacle before the temple even down to the color, but God chose to not expound on what exactly moral corruption is. Why? Its not there because God didn't want it there. "These people DESERVED genocide." I dont know about you bro, but that sounds to me like self-righteous judgment. Our righteousness is but filthy rags to the Lord. Gods judgment is sufficient, and as difficult as it is for me to understand, I can understand that my way of doing things and wanting to do things is not even comparable. Just because I would have done it differently than God did, doesn't make it anymore correct How does Jesus say that the world will know that we are His disciples? Is it by the judgment we show one to another...or the love? Which is why I want to conclude on that. Its about showing Christs love, wherever, whenever you can. I know things get lost in the text, but I want to ensure that I mean no ill will in what I said and that I mean it all out of love.
Michelangelo Adamantiel I Find it unclear why you think it's ok to say that the Canaanites deserves genocide. I find that highly unfitting for two reasons: 1) God has divine knowledge which enables only Him to truly decide whether a people would ever deserve genocide 2) Canannites where also human beings. They are also people, and we who have heard the teaching of Jesus and get to see the fulfillment of the law I think should be careful with how we judge other people. In the present, past and future.
MichaelAngelo, thank you. I also commented and said similar to what you said here. I have watched several of these videos and while I enjoyed many of them, I have to say that I have noticed a similar pattern in a few. The makers of these videos seem to, in some cases, be trying to depict certain parts of scripture in a certain way that causes some facts to be downplayed, revised, or even cleverly omitted altogether in order to spare certain feelings or quite frankly appease certain viewers and their particular sensitivities. Sir, you have hit the nail on the head in your comment and your elaboration of how vile the Cananites were is a great addition to explaining why it is that they NEEDED to be destroyed ALL OF THEM even the animals. Every living defiled thing needed to go.
Aron Fra, You can't teach unconditional love without fearing the Lord first. In order for unconditional love to exist you have to have free will. The direct result of free will is both unconditional love and sin depending on which path you choose. Those that choose sin choose judgement. This also happened to the Israelites later on when they decided to engage in human sacrifice and worship Canaanite gods. They were raped and pillaged by the Assyrians and then the Babylonians as punishment.
Excellent summaries of the books of the Bible. I share your videos with friends! Be encouraged for a world of people are listening to you. Praying for you and your ministry. May God bless and protect you all!!
"And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” - Joshua 24:15. Joshua spoke these words shortly before his death as a farewell to the nation of Israel, before his death at the age of 110 years. He led the nation of Israel for thirty years, being given leadership at the age of 80, after serving forty years as Moses's attendant and Top Military General. Ironically, Moses and Joshua were both 80 years old when they became leader of the nation of Israel.
Very interesting book, thank you, guys, for opening the Truth of Joshua and Israelites that they must keep faithful to God and his Commandments. Otherwise same thing will happen to us if we aren't faithful to God and his words and Teachings. God bless 🙏🏻

Love these reviews. I watch them before and after reading each chapter. Helps me remember the information and understand the material even better. Thank you, BibleProject!

Thank you so much for helping us "new" Christians! I have shared your Bible project with my family. I personally "thought" I was saved over 20 yrs ago but only with in the year have I come to know God with all my heart soul mind and strength. So for me this is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. And now I will also be able to share with my own children the truth and understanding of God and the Bible. So Thank you
Hey guys, I love your work and love your bible-in-a-year reading plan on the Bible app! Just a heads up, I think day 70 is supposed to have a link to this video but instead it links to the Deuteronomy one again. Thanks for all your hard work!
Perfect explanation, thanks! Came here exactly because I was puzzled at what I was supposed to be drawing from the stories of Jericho and Ai. Now I can re-read and go forward without feeling lost.
Hi guys. Thanks for your videos, and may God bless you all abundantly for these amazing and great videos. Thank you all so much, Blessing from South Africa. Shalom
Thank you for this..I hope I'm not alone when I say my attention span when reading the bible is low and I feel horrible for not knowing enough but your videos..they're helping. Thank you for your hard work. Amen.
I just would like to emphasize one point: the fact that you rather not monetizing your videos over 3.11 million subscribers, just to transfer the message beneath your outstanding comments on Bible, is one in a billion behavior to perform. I am so glad to have relatives like you are.
In Genesis 15:16 God gives Abram (Abraham) a prophecy. The second one is about coming back to the land in 400 years because, "The sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure". God, in His Devine Mercy and Providence is giving the people in the promised land 400 years to repent. Grace in Genesis. Just like today God has not sent Jesus back, because He still wants some time for our friends and strangers to Repent and believe in His Son. Josh 24:15 is beautiful. Yeshua is translation of Joshua by the time Jesus comes to earth.
Time is up! Either the God's Heavenly Army saves His people or Satan's people will reign supreme. Maybe you have sussed that with today's COVID 19 and the intention of Bill Gates and Alan Dershowitz to force vaccinate 80% of world population. Apparently these vaccines have microscopic DNA changing properties that will destroy God's Creation and this World. However Rev. 11:18,19 promises God will bring to ruin those ruining the earth for the nations certainly have became wrathful to the extreme against all humanity not part of the Occult forces.
In some instances God did clearly state: Utterly destroy them, the women, the children and the animals as well Lets not be apologetic for what God told Joshua and the Israelites to do EXCELLENT SERIES - But I had to pause and explain that to my kids =)
sakor88 no hyperbole the mesha stele dated about 850 BC its a monument made king mesha and he boast of utterly destroying Israelites in two villages called Atarot and nebo it was literal i will quote to you his very words he attributes his success to his demon God chemosh. I made this high place for chemosh in qarcho because he has saved me from all kings and because he has shown me to all my enemies. omri the father of Ahab was the king of israel he oppressed moab many days for cemosh was angry with his land and his son Ahab replaced him and he said i will oppress moab but i look down on him and on his house and israel has been defeated has been defeated forever chemosh restored the land in my days and i built baal meon and i built a water reservoir in it. The men of Gad lived in the land of Atarot from ancient times and the king of israel built Atarot for himself and I faught against the city and captured it, AND I KILLED ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY AS A SACRIFICE FOR CHEMOSH AND FOR MOAB. and chemosh said to me go take nebo from israel and i went in the night and fought against it from the daybreak until midday and i took it and killed all 7,000 men and women and servant girls since for Ashtar chemosh i BANNED IT. mesha put these cities under the ban. to devote or destroy is also referred to as the Ban (khY'rem) to destroy every living thing. for example God commanded the amalekites to be put under the (BAN) come of your emotion and come to the truth understanding of the scriptures.
the proponents of the hyperbole know that already. The thing is is that its not ''clearly stated'' by God, that's the whole issue. There is much to read on the topic and just saying that its that simple is to ignore the contrary evidence
@@hezekhoshea1961 ''israel has been defeated has been defeated forever'' that is a hyperbole, it wasn't all of Israel, but some, right? Also, that doesn't get rid of the obvious contradiction in the OT account which can't be explained as being literal. Not only is the number hyperbolic (as is in all literature both from antiquity and even after) but so are the targeted groups. The Amalekites are one of the most obvious examples of a hyperbolic rhetoric.
@@annoyingdude76 There is no hyperbole the people that were ordered to be destroyed where eventually destroyed, the Canaanites where destroyed thats why they where virtually unheard of in the the times of the Kings, the Amelekites aswell eventually they ceased to exist, God gave the command to destroy the wicked Amelekites for attacking the israelites when they were leaving the land of Egypt, how do you explain this fact that these groups eventually ceased to exist? you say its a hyperbole because some groups orderd to be destroyed might have been mentioned later but God already answered this in Deuteronomy 7:22 And the LORD thy God will put out those nations before thee by little and little: thou mayest not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee. you stated the the command wasn't clearly stated by god, well go and read saumel 15 about the Amelekites and see if its clear or not, are you going to say the flood was a hyperbole two? because the bible says every human was killed but there was still people who survived the flood. this is not a scriptural problem but a personal problem its you people who are offended and are trying to change the Scriptures to your own liking you people do this with everything including with homosexuality which the scriptures strongly condemn old and new testament.
@@hezekhoshea1961 yes there was, they were not ''eventually destroyed'' that's down right false. They integrated into Israelite society, some still had the ''last names'' that note their origin. So you are just wrong on that. Also, to answer your question, they drove them off little by little, true, so how does that prove your point? When the attack took place it was a gradual expansion, not some quick ethnic cleansing. That's the only thing your verse shows. What about the ones that became part of Israelite society? Why weren't they killed or driven out? Because it wasn't an extermination order. Also, yes I've read 1 Sam 15, don't think I haven't seen all the relevant passages. That passage, actually the whole chapter, is filled with hyperbole. It says that they were ''totally destroyed'' apart form their king and some animals, and then completely negates it later. Not only that, you can see hyperbole both in land size and even if you look closely at the end you'll see a hint to hyperbole as well. Literal reading just doesn't work. Also, even the order wasn't directly from God, do you know what He did actually said? No, you don't. As for the flood, what the hell does that have to do with anything? I'm only here to correct you and others when you talk about something you haven't studied. If there is hyperbole, there is. If there isn't, there isn't. I can say a few words about the flood but I won't since that is not the topic. So no, it's your ignorance that is the problem. You haven't studied the topic at all, which is not a problem, but it is a problem if you haven't studied it and them talk about it.
Thank you so much for your videos , i have lost my faith a long time ago and am now feeling empty and in need for god. So i started watching your videos and they helped me so much 🥰
I've just discovered this channel and it is honestly so clear and I believe a great representation of the unity of the Bible. I personally have been able to interpret the word just fine, but the memory side of it was always hazy. This is extremely helpful and insightful! Please keep it up guys😊
I thought that too until I learned Tim Mackie (the main guy for The Bible Project) rejects penal substitution of the gospel - that Christ died to pay for our sins). I was shocked to learn that.
I just finished the book of Joshua and this is soooo helpful. I was one who was a little disturbed by all the war, and took “destroy” literally. So, that particular explanation about “genocide” really helped.
The definition of genocide has nothing to do with whether or not the aggressors are successful in wiping the entire race. This video just made the case that its not genocide because some citizens were left alive. What gives this person or any person the authority to expouse what is and is not literal in the Bible? In the many translations genocide is consistently used. Can we just individually decide that the scary parts arent literal but the parts we can stomach are?
It's all story. When we look at the book as a book and not as a literal history- this man's interpretation actually stands. We can look for the patterns and literary themes without focusing on the actual killing and such. Once we start picking and chosing what was real and what was not, who gets to draw the line? I don't claim to. And I don't believe others who claim divine knowledge on how god wants the book read either. It's a book- and it's objectively been written out, translated, and edited by man over centuries.
ISAIAH 6 - JOSHUA “Then I said, “Lord, how long?” And He answered: “Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant, the houses are without a man, the land is utterly desolate.” (Isaiah 6:11) WORDS BY: FATHER "Joshua was a conqueror of the land of Canaan just as My Son Jesus is a conqueror of the land of your heart. He was a prophecy of what was to come, even having the same name as the Saviour. But what was Joshua prophesying? He prophesied a cleansing of your heart from all its inhabitants until only My word remains. But what happened when Israel came across a land and failed to cleanse it? They became complacent and began building for themselves, leaving the foreigners in the land. Joshua indeed means salvation but if you have issues in your life that you don’t allow Him to save you from, you will be caught up in deeper problems later on in life and far more severe. Today is the day of salvation. Do not linger or get comfortable with darkness in your heart. Cleanse your heart now. You may ask Me how much cleansing you need? Until your heart is laid waste without strongholds, until every evil tree is cut down without fruit so that your heart is left desolate from all darkness, ready for My rule. To cleanse a land full of darkness can be a difficult thing especially when the heart has lived with it so long. That is why it is going to take more than truth to conquer. You have to possess it by force and stand at all cost. Are you willing to sacrifice all to overcome? Are you willing to face the giants in your life knowing that the Lion in you is greater? You are called to be a conqueror of the world by expanding My light. But like all conquerors, your heart must first be conquered, knowing that darkness offers nothing rewarding. Only then will you possess the wisdom and strength to overcome. "
I’ve been ready my Bible daily and I’m in Joshua today. I like to watch these before I start on the chapter. Thankyou for all your hard work in making these videos
So good. This is exactly what the world needs right now. More pictures, illustrations. Not just quotes without root. Thanks once again, and bless! I'mma help fund some more if it's possible later on. !
The problem is that it's a great generalized summary, that tends to "skim" over the really questionable parts and justify it like "...the reason they were ordered to kill all men, women, and children... well you see... they prayed to false idols. And sacrificed Children! That's bad... so they had to be erased-- and the thing about killing them all, it was just a phrase of speech". So was Sodom and Gomorrah a figure of speech... was wiping out the entire earth with a flood, God responding to Elisha sending bears to go maul young kids... it can't all be hyperbolic, the fact is Yaweh apparently destroyed whole civilizations and ppl as a demonstration of power, he killed first borns and thousand of Egyptians in Exodus to "prove a point". But that isn't the big problem with these narratives, it's that they skim over the controversial shit.... okay, like Josuah for instance, after the Jewish ppl had the successful victory in Jericho, I can't remember if it was Ai, but they had a failed battle and Joshua says that god was unhappy 'cause the one soldier looted some Babylonian stuff from their last conquested, which displeased God so they collectively had him stoned to death... yep. Fucked up, right, imagine if we stoned our soldiers to death in the name of an invisible god. Also, the battle where Joshua asks God to keep the Sun in the sky for 2 days straight, which when this story was written made sense to them 'cause it was mostly around Babylonian-exile and they had no idea about Astronomy and Heliocentric theory, we know that stopping the earth's rotation would cause the entire earth to be destroyed today. But again, you don't even hear this stuff mentioned in these narratives 'cause Christian's don't want to address stuff like that, if it defies science, logic, historical accuracy, etc you will NEVER see it brought up here only the good parts.
@@Jaryism agreed. It's a bit too liberal of an interpretation. The old testament, especially in a format like this, should be treated as literature. It shouldn't be interpreted in any way in something like this. Interpretation has its place, but not in this format
JARY Personally I see no wrong in the creator of life taking it away, for the good. He simply doesn’t owe us anything. God gave us life, and his love freely and we spat/spit in his face when we knowingly sin against him. In addition to that let’s note that he never kills anyone without reason. I truly think the problem is some don’t understand how serious our sin is to a HOLY and PERFECT God. It’s so serious it deserves death. For the wages of sin is death... So Instead of blaming God blame the evil doers... We aren’t worthy of the breath in our lungs. Yet God shows mercy towards us and let’s us breathe/live another day. Why? Cause he loves us! God bless you brother I pray the lord softens your heart and opens your eyes! Jesus is waiting for you with open arms, I pray you receive your salvation through him! (Oh and about that Sun part... It seems you have God in this small mortal box, which is foolish. He’s God! creator of ALL THINGS! He can surely do stop the earth and everything be just fine. For HES the creator of all we see. God bless you brother, shalom!)
@@Jaryism God doesn't defy science or logic; He writes them into existence. God answered the heart of Joshua's prayer and extended daylight. I don't know HOW He did it but He's more powerful than science. It takes faith to trust in God and the Bible. You don't have to love God, but the Canaanites and all the people who were defeated because of their hatred of God probably wished they had loved Him as they were being destroyed. The Gibeonites were smart and entered into a covenant with the Israelites. They saw Israel's God as the one true God. Joshua is an awesome book!!!! I love God and I love His Word!!!! Pray for God to help you love Him and have faith in Him. He loves you and wants you to come to Him! You wouldn't be on this channel if you weren't curious about God.
I have always wondered about the canaanites and why it was okay for them to be attacked and land taken. Now I understand, thank you :) It should be a warning to many nations today
iamforchange no he gave you wrong information. They were attacked because of their sins which are listed in leviticus 18. It was indeed a mass genocide except for that harlot and her family who repented. The rest were defiled in their sins and so needed to go.
We all know, even if abominous practices occur in cultures (slaughter or sacrifice) - this is not practiced by all (i.e. there are lots of innocent people in a culture). It's just not literal. No evidences have been found of the exodus or any battles in the past 150 years of archeological work - and those excavations around Jericho that have been found, don't show battles or walls as spoken of
@@ashleycrystal9719 no, it wasn't a mass genocide, the text is too contradictory to say that it was definitely a genocide. True they were corrupt as hell, but it wasn't a complete extermination since it goes against a lot of other things in the text (and I don't just mean morally)
The "innocent" Canaanites were either already sacrificed or were part of Rahab's family and the Gibeonites. Ironic how a degenerate had the most common sense in this scenario.
The answer is given all the way back in Genesis. When God told Abraham about how his descendants would only get the land in the future (hundreds of years later). God informed Abraham WHY he couldn't go in and take it yet. It was because "the iniquity was not yet full" for the people living there, before the time of Exodus. Remember, in the days of Noah "they ONLY did evil continually in their hearts". They were given time to repent, while Noah was building the Ark, yet none of them believed God and got in the Ark with Noah. Why? "Their iniquity was full and their wound was incurable", and only God knows when a heart has reached that point and "seared their conscience". At the time of Exodus, the people's hearts had gotten to that point. They weren't going to turn from their evil. If you study the practices of the people living in that land during that time, it is sickening. Actually, the Levitical laws were telling Israel to do the opposite of what the surrounding nations were doing. Read them and you will get an idea of what they were up to. Also, do some historical research and you will find out, but be warned that it will make your skin crawl. The LORD let them be destroyed because they weren't going to turn from evil. They weren't going to ever repent. They loved the darkness and had no desire to do what was just, merciful, and righteous. They normalized evil. God see's the thoughts, motives, and intentions of every heart. He see's the future. He knows when there is still some good in someone, or when they have fully given their hearts over to do evil only continually. It was God who told Israel when they could go in to take the land. It was when the people there had reached the point of no return. All they wanted was evil continually.
Very cool break down. As I was reading along and listening to book of Joshua I was like man this seems kind of harsh on these people, but I had to remind myself how disgusting and wicked they actually are. It's hard sometimes to remember every detail, unless you read the books over and over. We only retain about 10% of what we read, and about 20% from hearing, so I prefer to listen to the bible being read, and follow a long. We're truly blessed to be born in a era that we know, what we must do to be saved.
Would love if you guys did character cards with a drawn picture of what influential people of the Bible possibly looked like. As I read, it's kind of hard to remember who's related to who and who came after who. Just an idea. Love all your work, praise God for it
I began watching these videos starting from Leviticus. When I watched this one and the assertion that the extermination of the Canaanites was hyperbole, I started to feel uncomfortable. Dt. 7:1-2, 9:4-6 and 20:16-17 talk about devoting to complete destruction and saving nothing alive that breathes. Also, the Gibeonites tricked Joshua, I see nothing that states they became believers. The Israelites never conquered all the land so they would still have a problem intermarrying with Canaanites. It was a gradual and incomplete conquest.
Excellent observation. I commented that they need to pray more about this specific subsect. There are things that are not clear. Pierrebrseven thanks for catching it too
You stated what I was thinking. The Bible does utilize hyperbole occasionally, but the text is clear about the total destruction. Instead of rationalizing God’s actions to fit my flawed perspective, I will have faith that the God of the universe will do justly. Remember: without faith, it is impossible to please God.

*7:00** wait, so Israel was not told to commit genocide in that region.* uh oh. we all should have re-read this section. _JC

But this is reality:
Not only did the Canaanites do human and child sacrifice, but they also did things that defiled all nature (if you look up what Satanist's do, you'll get an idea), having sex with anything that moves.
I'd tell you to watch yourself but God can speak for himself."
Actually I can imagine because I have in prayer told the Lord that I don't like reading Leviticus because its boring :) I have told him that some of the history in the Old Testament doesn't apply to the age we are in now.
"These people DESERVED genocide."
I dont know about you bro, but that sounds to me like self-righteous judgment. Our righteousness is but filthy rags to the Lord. Gods judgment is sufficient, and as difficult as it is for me to understand, I can understand that my way of doing things and wanting to do things is not even comparable. Just because I would have done it differently than God did, doesn't make it anymore correct
How does Jesus say that the world will know that we are His disciples? Is it by the judgment we show one to another...or the love? Which is why I want to conclude on that. Its about showing Christs love, wherever, whenever you can. I know things get lost in the text, but I want to ensure that I mean no ill will in what I said and that I mean it all out of love.
Michelangelo Adamantiel I Find it unclear why you think it's ok to say that the Canaanites deserves genocide. I find that highly unfitting for two reasons:
1) God has divine knowledge which enables only Him to truly decide whether a people would ever deserve genocide
2) Canannites where also human beings.
A Z I agree with you about the Canaanites having corrupted DNA with Fallen Angels is the reason why they were to be totally eliminated.
Thank you so much for allowing me to be able to step back and see the bigger picture unfolding.
The Bible Project, a true treasure!
These videos are SUCH a blessing!! Thanks so much for using your gift and giving God your yes.

Well said! Thank you. This is how I feel as well.
You guys have been blessing my soul with these videos ...thanks a lot and God bless you!!...From Brazil here.
… and it’s beautiful. After reading this book, I feel blessed. ❤
Very interesting book, thank you, guys, for opening the Truth of Joshua and Israelites that they must keep faithful to God and his Commandments. Otherwise same thing will happen to us if we aren't faithful to God and his words and Teachings. God bless 🙏🏻
Amazing ,thank you Jesus for this people💕😊

I am completely in love with this series!!
I like Joshua. It’s so vast and intriguing with all the description. It is boring at times, but how awesome a read!
Love these reviews. I watch them before and after reading each chapter. Helps me remember the information and understand the material even better. Thank you, BibleProject!
Thank you so much for explaining this. I've been stuck on Joshua for a week not moving forward in my bible studies as i couldn't understand these battles. Now I do. God is good 🙌
you guys are such a gift. Thank you!!!
I gotta go re-read a lot of this. I admit I haven't read much of the Old Testament, but there is so much there!

I LOVED THIS form of teaching. Thankyou so much. You have a unique gift! It's so practical. Please do the entire bible. Thankyou! Lol
Bill Whitmer Bless you
I think it was more than 400 years
In some instances God did clearly state: Utterly destroy them, the women, the children and the animals as well
Lets not be apologetic for what God told Joshua and the Israelites to do
EXCELLENT SERIES - But I had to pause and explain that to my kids =)
sakor88 no hyperbole the mesha stele dated about 850 BC its a monument made king mesha and he boast of utterly destroying Israelites in two villages called Atarot and nebo it was literal i will quote to you his very words he attributes his success to his demon God chemosh.
The men of Gad lived in the land of Atarot from ancient times and the king of israel built Atarot for himself and I faught against the city and captured it, AND I KILLED ALL THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY AS A SACRIFICE FOR CHEMOSH AND FOR MOAB. and chemosh said to me go take nebo from israel and i went in the night and fought against it from the daybreak until midday and i took it and killed all 7,000 men and women and servant girls since for Ashtar chemosh i BANNED IT.
mesha put these cities under the ban. to devote or destroy is also referred to as the Ban (khY'rem) to destroy every living thing.
for example God commanded the amalekites to be put under the (BAN)
come of your emotion and come to the truth understanding of the scriptures.
the proponents of the hyperbole know that already.

Great job!!

These drawings are so sharp and amazing!!!!
@@cjbabalos7188 point taken, so according to you what would be an alternative, acceptable view?
It's all story. When we look at the book as a book and not as a literal history- this man's interpretation actually stands. We can look for the patterns and literary themes without focusing on the actual killing and such. Once we start picking and chosing what was real and what was not, who gets to draw the line? I don't claim to. And I don't believe others who claim divine knowledge on how god wants the book read either. It's a book- and it's objectively been written out, translated, and edited by man over centuries.
ALL PRAISE AND WORSHIP TO JESUS THE MIGHTY GOD 👍🏽👍🏻👍👍🏼👍🏾👍🏿💯
Great job!may God richly bless you!!!!
ISAIAH 6 - JOSHUA
“Then I said, “Lord, how long?” And He answered: “Until the cities are laid waste and without inhabitant, the houses are without a man, the land is utterly desolate.” (Isaiah 6:11)
WORDS BY: FATHER
"Joshua was a conqueror of the land of Canaan just as My Son Jesus is a conqueror of the land of your heart.
Red Eagle He lives in your heart and cleanses it.
You guys are amazing. Really helps me understand the bible!
Thank you and praise God. This has helped me whil I’m in my journey understand The Lords prophecy for his children 🙏🏿
Exactly!
Such a blessing to understand the Book of Joshua through your presentation. More blessings to you! ❤
Love all your work, praise God for it
I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and savour and God as my one true God almighty of isreal may God bless us all
I began watching these videos starting from Leviticus.
Kudos to you Karen, He seems to often insert his own personal bias which is not always faithful to the scriptural text.
Thank you so much for this video and my kids finally understand the book of Joshua through this video. God bless you more
These recaps have been extremely helpful to me, so thank you! I enjoy watching these after I read each book of the Bible.
I have this note on my door that says don’t fear , for the Lord is near
