Hello Sir...I took your advice and began work on a Benjamin Ficus..It was about 4 feet tall with many feeder roots.~~~~not really a large base~~~~I had the opportunity to cut back large roots and one really huge tap root~~~~The work was done about 4 weeks ago~~~~~because I cut large tap root and feeder roots in the root ball I was really skittish about pruning the top drastically so I just removed small branches and cut longer branches at the top ~~~~watered it well and rested in shade and now I am seeing smaller leaves coming back~~~~I understand that red spider mites are a plague to this tree~~~in the past when it was a regular potted plants I had to treat it for bugs drastically~~~~now I do not see any bugs...but I do see black spots on the back of the leaves and some withering of a leaf or two. The repotting and light pruning was about 4 weeks ago~~~~~How long should I wait to prune heavily to get the shape~~~I live in Florida and the weather is pretty much in 2 seasons.~~~~Hot and then Cool~~~~~with very little difference in Spring and Fall~~~can I wait till next year in Spring to to the drastic pruning and shaping?
Sir...your videos are just awesome and I love the way you patiently explain every detail..... I had a question to ask...can I repot ficus benjamina the way you do it in river sand? I am bit scared that it would die....please help me out sir...
Hello, sir! Nice tutorials. I have a Ficus fig planted 2 years ago in our lawn and it really grew tall-- around 2.5 meters. Can I bonsai it? Actually, I haven't tried to bonsai a tree yet. Eager to do one though and learning from your video.
Odessa Lemence Yes you can bonsai it. Since it is in your lawn you can do it gradually. Here's how. First you need to chop the trunk to a proportionate height with your trunk. the guideline is 1: 6 to 1:12. the 1 is the trunk thickness. say if you have a 4 inch trunk your max height you can cut is 48 inches tall, better if shorter say 24 inches only. The tree's response is to grow new branches down your trunk. Another thing you should do together with the trunk chop is to prune your lateral roots one at a time in a period of say a year. you don't need to dig deep, just enough you can saw the lateral roots, so about 6 to 10 inches deep. The tree's response should be new roots branching from the cut portion and new roots growing nearer to the base of trunk. You can even start to shape your new branch structure while your fig is still in the ground, then maybe after 2 years or more you can harvest your tree by just cutting the tap root the rest will be easy then. By that time you should have enough roots that can fit a container/pot not necessarily a bonsai pot for now. Do not forget to seal the trunk cuts. Also you may want to air layer the top portion of your tree for other use.
To increase foliage density is the last job to be done in creating bonsai. This is achieved by constant trimming. But first you need to grow your branches and let them grow thick enough so it is proportion to its trunk and other branches. Then you trim less frequently at the start then more frequently in the later parts. As the plant ages say 5 to 6 years old it just naturally become denser as you trim time and time again. For already formed bonsai trim shoots even when they are just about an inch or two longer than your silhouette.
I grow mine from cuttings. Or try plant shops or nurseries they might have old lanscape Benjaminas and would like to dispose them, you can make bonsai out from them.
Nice explained
That is a beautiful ficus. Hopefully mine can look like that one day
Wow i like Benjamina bonsai
I wish somebody is taking care of your precious trees right now!!!!

+Shahrukh Shaikh Ficus can grow almost on any medium including garden soil. you don't actually need to repot them in sand.
Nicely designed.. wow
Very nice... Can you keep them outside to make them deciduous?
Thank You...I did learn something.....

Great intrutional videos. I have a juniper bonsai that growing parallel to the ground. What do I do to make the plant curve upwards?
Wire them and let them point upwards. I have a creeping juniper which only grows down and or parallel to the ground.
