Thank you for sharing your amazing insight into your impressive knowledge! You are an inspiration to me and so many others that are just starting out in the world of bonsai!❤️
Thank you for posting this! And for being gracious in your replies to others. Not only did the video bring me a lot of insight, but the comments -like the person explaining how someone's "Bad!" can really mean "good"- were all good. It is so good to remember we have the ability to ( just like the bonsai'd trees, which are under stress and being twisted with wires) turn any "bad" thing into its opposite, if we can just change our perspective.
Will miss his videos was the first video I watched on bonsai. He will be remembered thru his work he shared on TH-cam. He always took time to answer questions. Wj

Well explained 😊 my first time to see how bonsai plants are made. I just felt a little pain seeing the plant going with that process but i know its just temporary
Thanks for watching, sorry I can not update this lemon as if was sold to a persistent buyer. I have other videos which I have updates though. Hope you will like them.
hello, thank you bonsai iligan, all of your information is wonderful. would you recommend this step for a 10yr old grafted ficus that has never been a bonsai, its trunk is already very thick. thank you for your time
erieschl I assume that ficus is in the ground. To harvest that ficus you need to do it gradually. step 1. Chopped the tree to your desired height ratio is 1:6, the 1 is your trunk diameter, the 6 is your height. so if its a 5 inches thick you chopped it at 30 inches. also chop a lateral root nearer to the base of trunk and do it one at a time say every 3 months. The response is that the tree would grow new branches which you can wire/shape. the cut roots will grow new roots nearer to your base. Then maybe a in a year or two you can harvest the tree, cut the tap root and transfer in this colander method. check your climate, should be growing period.

I love it, i wanted to bonsai kalamansi lemon, is it ok to put it indoors even if it is newly potted,, the sun is just in the morning because it is close to the window
if it is newly potted it has to be protected from sun to prevent dehydration, better protect it fully meaning no sun, but once it is established it has to be out into the sun. bonsai just like any plant needs sun and air movement which is outside the house. You can get them into the house near a window once in a while..

Hello my question is for how long do you the training wires ? I bought my lemon this morning and planing to become a bonsai in couple years , so keep updating videos of your lemon and I'll follow you! Cheers JM
Juan Martinez You need to remove your wires when it will start biting your branches. So for how long? the answer is it depends how fast your plant grows. You can allow the branches to bite though a little but if the wires are digging to about 1/4 the size of any of your branches, you can start cutting the wires. Sometimes wire bite marks can make the bonsai look older thus others allow the wires to bite. Overtime when the marks heal, the branches could look rugged rather than smooth and that is a feature for bonsai.
When planting a tree to grow the trunk using the co-lander method, how is it pruned to maintain height? Would it be pruned as normal bonsai as described in your other videos, or would it be allowed to wild growth to develop faster and then cut back? Thank you for your time
As I scroll up comments and reading them, it's a shock to read one of the comment saying you past away.😔 Rest in peace kabayan. Sad to found your video and it's what I read from the comment below. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to many. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
joshua wong The pot helps determine how thick it will get. The final design determines when you stop letting it grow thicker. In general, you want a tree's base to be 1/6 the final height to give good taper and present a convincing image of a tree.
+Jitendra Bhatiya I am not familiar with Jamun plant. As a start I recommend ficuses because it is fast growing and forgiving. But you must know that if you go into bonsai it can be a lifestyle that can change your routine because you have to attend to it unlike plants in the ground, you have to water, fertilize and trim regularly. If that fits you then that is the time you can invest on better materials. Materials that have natural small leaves or can reduce its leaf size, hard wood to last long.
Thank you sire for this wonderful video. But explain to me why you put the tree first in a plastic container and after in a clay bigger one ? Thank you again
+Papou Mkl The plastic container has many holes if you notice it. The roots are expected to outgrow the plastic container and escape outside to the bigger pot. I can remove the plastic container once in a while say every two years then I trim the escaping roots. the response is that the roots grows again branching out from the inside, the roots will eventually increase in density inside the plastic container, so you have a dense yet smaller root-ball which will fit more to a smaller bonsai pot in the future. It is practically root management, you call this the Co-lander method.

Hey hi Ligan it grt8 watching ur videos n due to this i have ordered few seed from online site..now how to i go abt it does every seed hav differed ways to help thm germinate nimesh
+nimesh patel Sorry I don't have much experience germinating seeds but I see them many in TH-cam. In my case I just sow them about an inch below the soil and cover them.
+mini me Possible causes 1. If it is acute I mean it happen quickly and if just after you applied fertilizer then it is most probably over fertilization. You need to flush/wash the soil, meaning water it and let it drain freely for about an hour or more. If the drain is slow, it means clogged, the plant is more prone to over fertilization, you need to partially change the soil, do not cut roots. 2. If not situation one (acute), another possible cause is lack of sunlight. has your plant been inside your home? if yes you need to ease it out to the sun. 3. Your plant maybe under watered and drying up. Sometimes even if you water daily and even if you see that the water draining properly, if your soil is compacted, the water does not seep into your soil and just pass down directly to the drain through the sides of the pot. You need to re-soil this and try minimal root disturbance, don't fertilize at this time. 4. Your roots may be rotting due to clogged drains and your soil is soggy.
Gajanan Chavhan pure seived river sand. I have two sizes i/4 inch at the bottom and 1/8 om top, then I put garden soil at the topmost for nutrients. The coarse river sand are for drainage purposes.
oh, our garden soil I buy from our nurseries here on a per sack basis. It is ordinary river soil mix with any organic material either saw dust or rice hull or both. The soil is very fertile as it is collected from river which is actually top soil from the mountains eroding to the lowlands. Actually you can add instead of soil any fertilizer whatever is available. here I can buy vermi cast or processed compost or even coco peat. The coarse sand dries up easily. and for those edible fruits I fertilize with organics only, no chemical fertilizer.
Thanks for the video. A question about wiring on lemon trees - do you have any time estimations on how long wiring should be left on before it starts to cut into the bark?
Remove when the wire starts to dig in the cambium (Bark). about a month or so. Sometimes the trunk will go back to its straight shape. you may wire again in about 4 to 6 months when the bark has healed.
chinmay sahoo River sand contain just that, there are many alternatives, you can use any bonsai soil mix if your plant have roots already. But for rooting purposes (large collected materials without roots) I use coarse river sand only (sieved to remove the too big and too fine sand), because it is neutral and doesn't have anything that can hinder root growth. In my case river sand is very available in the quarry and cheap so that is what I use.
Hussain shaikh You can do it with edible citrus. I like the Meyer lemon for that; it produces like crazy, which helps to compensate for the small size of the tree.

Hi sir you've done a great job my question is I have a lemon tree it's age is around 16 years I actually haven't planned to make it a bonsai tree but now I'm planning to do so is it possible ..?? and it is it possible to expect lemons on it actually it is in large pot in my parking area where it get only two hours of sunlight so please suggest me with your valuable information..
alhasani mohammed I think two hours of sunlight is not enough to encourage fruiting. Can you increase it to at least 6 hours. If not still try inducing it with organic equivalent of potash.
To decide on what gauge of wire to use to need to assess if the gauge can bend the branches permanently say about 1/3 thickness of the branch. You can always put multiple wires up to 3 to hold the branch in its position. You can always be creative say guy wiring the branch or using some rebar or stick to anchor the branch.
Yes you can just trim the roots outside the colander and you put the tree back to grow further. The response when pruning the roots outside the colander is that more roots grow inside the colander thus increasing the density. However the roots will somehow grow again outside the colander say in 2 to 3 years and you can do pruning again you can do a couple of times before it goes to a bonsai pot. You can use multiple colanders also if you are still growing large trunks or branches.
+Edin Stupar My estimate is two years old but I don't know actually because I just bought that from a nursery owned by a friend and I worked on it immediately and displayed it back to the nursery and now it is sold. I need to make a new one I guess and let it stay in my garden though crowded.
ty for fast answ...i d like to make one with lemon tree and one with orange, sry for troubeling u but can u help litlle more? What kind of soil u use ( i am not really good in english and i can t understand all u say in video)? Thank you...
+Edin Stupar I usually use coarse river sand because it can drain well, but when you are repotting do not disturb the root ball and bring along the old soil. Just be sure your pot has large holes for drainage, put a screen to prevent erosion.Tie to anchor. Put in shade until new shoots are grown well that's about 3 months before easing to sun, no works like wiring before it is established and that is about 6 months from report, may start fertilization when in full sun say about 4 to 5 months from repot.
Good video! I heard u said this person u learn the method from Fb, is the person Neli Stoyanova? I have a Meyer lemon tree which I grew on ground about 3 years but it seems like it's so stuck to the ground because of the roots. If that's the case, is airlayering better than to remove the tree and hurt the roots?
yes it is better, based on my experience also, collected lemons could hardly survive when dug from ground beter if it had been growing in the pot or in colander before you bonsai it.
you have to grow the tree first normally, to thicken the trunk. then you can chop off later to an ideal or desired height then create a bonsai from there.
I think we wrap a wire around the bark not only to give a require shape but also restricts its growth vertically so that the bark and the stems become thicker ..... NOW Question comes that.... how long we should keep it as wired ....when to released the wires.....is the pruning necessary when wired?..........which month is preferred for this (in Asia/ India)??
Wrapping metal wire around any plant does not benefit it in any way in fact the opposite what do you thinks gonna happen when the stem becomes thicker and it strangles itself to death and cuts off it's own water supply this doesnt even make the stem grow slower either
remove wire because if not it can damage the cambium of the branch and it can die off. You can leave them to cut a bit so you can have rugged branches as the branches callus or repair itself eventually but don't leave too long disturbing its energy circulation all throughout the tree.
Thank you Iligan for the information. i had a lemon tree that was 12 inches tall from the ground. It was eaten by my goat , it is now 5-6 inches tall without leaves. this is the second time it has been eaten :-(. It has survived all this and was wondering, can i pot it for a "Bonsai"?
+dev bachu in containerized gardening especially bonsai you need good drainage to prevent water stagnation at bottom of pot causing root rot and death. I use coarse river sand from a quarry then sieve them into coarse and fine. the coarse goes at the bottom layer while the finer ones are place on top. the very fine ones almost dust are washed off. Of course there are better materials like akadama or hard clay.
+dev bachu To keep them small, you need to make their trunks crooked to reduce height, that is if their trunks and pliable enough by wiring. good luck to your new hobby.
You have to be constantly observing or checking if the wire is biting into the cambium or bark already. In about a Month or so. The cambium or even the bark is thin yet for a young lemon or any on any young tree.
The aggregate you can buy from a river quarry or supplier. What I do is to buy from people putting sand from a river (the quarry) into sacks, they call it mix sand. then I sieve them into two sizes using simple screen you use to screen out the mosquitoes in you home or you can even use your black or green net which you shade your plants. the coarser sand (gravel) I put under the finer ones as drainage layer.
Thank you sir for sharing this information with us. I have a query that do I need to trim the roots when it comes out of the colander? Will it not damage the plant. Where do I put the plant when it is very cold like January. I live in northern India.
The purpose of the colander is that you can trim the roots without disturbing the root ball. The effect is that more roots will grow from the inside of the colander so when it is time to pot up in a bonsai pot which is smaller and shallower you will have more roots in your root ball. You need to put shade in your newly trim roots. when new shoots are growing that means your tree has adjusted well and you can remove the shade. When it gets cold you need to put your tree nearer your house assuming your house is heated, when snowing you need to put it inside say your park but best is a green house.
what is a good way to keep the tree from growing upwards, since I have a catalpa tree the trunk is roughly 2 inches thick but whenever the leaves come in they always shoot straight up I cut them back but they keep growing upwards
you need to watch if the wires are already cutting into the cambium. As the branches grows it will eventually grow into the wires cutting the bark. You will have to decide how much cut goes into the branches, don't worry about small cuts as the cut marks when healed after wire removal will callous and create an old looking branch. Say about a year.
thanks ani sir :) mga videos nimo tanan ge pang save nako sa computer.. dako kaayug katabang imo videos sir sama nako na beginner.. hope maka visit ko sa imong garden dha iligan.

Do not over water, will cause fungus. Colder climate will hasten fungus and rot your roots. If it is in shade already no need for plastic covering and just let it air dry. then water when soil gets dry that means twice a day.
is it ok sir if I used only sand from river or will I change it with river stone grits(first layer), river sand(second layer and vermi cast (third layer or at the top)?

oh, our garden soil I buy from our nurseries here on a per sack basis.
3 months.
beautiful work, beautiful explanation! thank you
sir ,about da wiring around da plant's stem to let them grow in shape what are da requirement days to keep n remove away da wire from da plant?
Remove when the wire starts to dig in the cambium (Bark). about a month or so. Sometimes the trunk will go back to its straight shape. you may wire again in about 4 to 6 months when the bark has healed.
Great video! Can we apply this technique to a fig tree too? Do these trees produce fruits like regular big ones?
+onur ciftci I think Yes, this bore fruit and a buyer bought it.
+Bonsai Iligan Thanks a lot!
How old is the lemon tree before you can bend it?
Sir, What does the river sand contain ? And are there any alternatives for river sand ?
chinmay sahoo River sand contain just that, there are many alternatives, you can use any bonsai soil mix if your plant have roots already. But for rooting purposes (large collected materials without roots) I use coarse river sand only (sieved to remove the too big and too fine sand), because it is neutral and doesn't have anything that can hinder root growth. In my case river sand is very available in the quarry and cheap so that is what I use.
Thank you sir.
your welcome
Those fruits are able to eatable or just for decoration, tks for ur information
Hussain shaikh You can do it with edible citrus. I like the Meyer lemon for that; it produces like crazy, which helps to compensate for the small size of the tree.

Hello sir
Ur collection is very nice
thank you
@@BonsaiIligan hello sir
I m waiting ur next video bonsai chapter.
What type of wire are you using
can you please show how this plant looks like now? thanks in advance
Ok sir ill surely do so thanks for your valuable suggestion
Wow! Thanks! Could you tell me what gauge wires you used? And when the time comes, will you just trim the roots which are outside the colander?
Hi, nice video. Just one que how old is that lemon tree?
Thank you bio Like for u
about two years old
Sir can we do winding to branches also
+suvarna lingisetti yes, most of the wiring works would be on the branches in fact rather than the trunk,
Any fertiliser to bear fruit in bonsai
+Luna Boruah High in Potassium.
My lemon tree is leaning over extremely to one side, and is very unstable. I’m using a rock to prop it up, any tips?
Ok thanks!
Queria saber se o senhor te alguma planta de bonsai de limão e se ele fica com folhas menores????
+Adriano Matos The leaves don't get small, unfortunately.
how many month to transfer the lemon to be a bonsai sir
It is a very great tutorial video. My question is how tree's height will be maintained?
you have to grow the tree first normally, to thicken the trunk. then you can chop off later to an ideal or desired height then create a bonsai from there.
Can you do an update on the lemon tree please.
we have to remove that wire or keep like that only??
remove wire because if not it can damage the cambium of the branch and it can die off. You can leave them to cut a bit so you can have rugged branches as the branches callus or repair itself eventually but don't leave too long disturbing its energy circulation all throughout the tree.
sir this is really helpful thumbs up
thank you!
+Nancy W maybe fence it to protect from goat. Thicken up the trunk first in the ground.
what a good soil mix for bonsai
+dev bachu in containerized gardening especially bonsai you need good drainage to prevent water stagnation at bottom of pot causing root rot and death. I use coarse river sand from a quarry then sieve them into coarse and fine. the coarse goes at the bottom layer while the finer ones are place on top. the very fine ones almost dust are washed off. Of course there are better materials like akadama or hard clay.
Shouldn't we remove the wire after it's matured?
sir have you tried growing a bonsai guyabano? is is possible?
it does not look good because the leaves won't shrink.
Very informativei it was a great teaching thank you
how old is this plant? can I use this technique on a Mango tree?
I love bonsai an will try to do them I have lemon lime Fuchs trees
+dev bachu To keep them small, you need to make their trunks crooked to reduce height, that is if their trunks and pliable enough by wiring. good luck to your new hobby.
thank you you are a great teacher, very helpful
Hi, how long should it be wired
You have to be constantly observing or checking if the wire is biting into the cambium or bark already. In about a Month or so. The cambium or even the bark is thin yet for a young lemon or any on any young tree.
was it gravel? under the soil?
yes.
The aggregate you can buy from a river quarry or supplier. What I do is to buy from people putting sand from a river (the quarry) into sacks, they call it mix sand. then I sieve them into two sizes using simple screen you use to screen out the mosquitoes in you home or you can even use your black or green net which you shade your plants. the coarser sand (gravel) I put under the finer ones as drainage layer.
check this out.: th-cam.com/video/94UFmzr8RS8/w-d-xo.html
you have lemon bonsai ready?
What kind of rocks can I use
salamat kaayo sa tutorial sir...e try nako ni
way sapayan.
Thank you.
Do you have an update on this video? I want to know what to do after?
alimina thank you for letting me know. That's so sad. May his soul rest in peace!
what is a good way to keep the tree from growing upwards, since I have a catalpa tree the trunk is roughly 2 inches thick but whenever the leaves come in they always shoot straight up I cut them back but they keep growing upwards
+Christian Medina you can manipulate the direction by wiring. Wiring is a common practice in bonsai.
+Bonsai Iligan thank you
Bonsai Iligan how do I know when to remove wire?
you need to watch if the wires are already cutting into the cambium. As the branches grows it will eventually grow into the wires cutting the bark. You will have to decide how much cut goes into the branches, don't worry about small cuts as the cut marks when healed after wire removal will callous and create an old looking branch. Say about a year.
Thanks man
thanks ani sir :) mga videos nimo tanan ge pang save nako sa computer.. dako kaayug katabang imo videos sir sama nako na beginner.. hope maka visit ko sa imong garden dha iligan.
