    Good luck with your breeding plans. I would also agree that this genus is more predictable than people give them credit for. I always feel like mine would choose to run and hide rather then throw a threat pose,

    I unpacked my pair of P vittata slings right when I got them because it was very hot outside. The exterior temperature of the shipping vial they were in was 103 degrees and high 90s inside. The suspect male did briefly become disorientated and ran across the back of my left hand, but both went in without much drama. Still, if I had to do it again, I would've let the vial cool down to room temps first. My P striata is my most trustworthy tarantula second only to my 4 B sabulosum slings in terms of calmness. Great rehouse!!

    The Poecilotheira genus is quickly becoming my favorite genus of Tarantulas. I will be getting my first Ghost and cannot wait until I have all of them. They are beautiful and their more skittish attitude is very attractive. I cant wait until I can add them to my collection.

    Very striking looking T Tom... She doesn't seem to show any aggression at all - like you say - - Not defensive at all. I was pretty surprised.. Perhaps people are just afraid of the potent venom - LOL. Pne day - I hope to have a Regalis - - that will be cool.

    Sent you some pics of the new tarantula and slings set up. Also got great photos of my A chalcodes drinking for a VERY long time after I housed her. So who ever says tarantulas don’t need water dishes or they won’t use them...this Chalcodes seriously loved having it there. Not too mention it was a field collected female, so the argument that a wild one would not use it or need it kinda blows my mind. She certainly did. She eats like a champ too!

Got them home, figured out how to keep them warn enough and the humidity up. Ended up putting them in a glass fronted book shelf with a candle warmer I put a small dish of water on. Got them setting at 8O% humidity and 79-81 degrees. Rehoused them yesterday. They've settled in and started webbing up their hide areas and burrowing a bit. Now I just need to figure out feeding. They were fed Wed, as far as I know. Going to attempt this afternoon. Here goes... well, a whole bunch more than I planned on.

Now I'm hoping there will be someone in my state with the opposite sex of what I have in the future for breeding. The new rules stink for small states and states with few keepers & breeders. Glad we have the breeding loan "loophole", because many of us will have to do that if we want to breed ours.

After entering into the hobby due to my daughter's interest and purchasing our first T, we now have 8 including 5 pokies. I have successfully rehoused my first two (vittata and hanumavilasumica) thanks to the great tips and tutorials you have created. I just picked up 3 new slings: subfusca, striata, and regalis. I've built a relationship with a great breeder in my state and am on a waitlist for ornata, tigrinawesseli, and fasciata slings which should be ready to bring home in the next month or two. Is there any chance of you doing an update video of all your pokies in the future? That would be really great to see. I'm also using the biodude setups. I already had a great one set up for my ball python and we have had a great time with it. I'm excited to see more input regarding your experience with the tarantula setups. Great video Tom, was wondering when a new video would come up, & this is the hot topic in the hobby, but I found it a good thing it was only those 5 species & while I haven't gotten my vittata yet, I do have an ornata already (the sub adult I got 1st) with my regalis & metalica slings! I hate the demonizing thing too, & it's case by case basis wich usually always has simple logical reasons why (enviroment, treatment, food, ETC) I look at it the same as with most animals, but I'll use dogs as a comparison as they get the same raw deal! Pokies are big, fast, photofobic, & of course their venom for larger prey, & like say pit bulls or Rottweilers if for whatever reason they go on the attack (either defensive or prevoked) they just have "more potential" to do damage then say a shitzue or a dwarf tarantula so they get the bad rep instead of people admitting they were probably being careless somehow! I have only gotten jumped by mine once with the top propped open I dropped in a cricket that went nowhere near it & ran the other way (I thought) & being alittle too small for a meal I went for another not seeing the cricket did a upturn towards the lid right over the tarantula, & as I was fishing for a cricket I heard the rapid gunfire of the legs while seeing it shoot at the top.... (that works better then ANY energy drink I might add lol) & it was the exact same container you just put the vittata in that I showed you in the past! At any rate it's all in how you go about it. If someone is prepared (catch cup, brush, enclosure ready) & calm, they usually are too. The ONLY time I've had an escape besides a sling going up the arm wich is easily delt with if you stay calm & redirect them! But the 1 I DID have issue with doesn't seem too popular (hides & burrow a lot with basic colors) & I bought on a whim just because of the price, & it was there, but is my chilobrachys kaeng krachen! Definitely a cool species that makes some cool webbing & tunnels, but yet to see it out brazen once yet even at night. But it was calm as could be, didn't freak out over the light, & just stayed there throughout all the other ones I was rehousing expecting issues to wich I had none. Then came this guy at around 3"plus or so roughly at the time, & as soon as I tipped the cup to transfer BANG it was off like a rocket, flew off the table, & ran into a pile of folded shirts, & after reading they are 1 of the species known for the rare double bite (to attack bigger prey & retreat until it takes affect) that was a tense moment, but it went smoothly with the catch cup & that's it! Lol same as you Tom, I see NONE of these horror stories proven true! Yes I've seen their size, speed, appetites, & not liking bright lights, but I feel they should be looked at more as a precaution to worse case scenarios, & if given the proper respects shouldn't be much of a problem! Sharks get a bad rap for the same reasons, & only a few truly deserve that fear because of logical reasons! Lol thank you for another great video, & your vittata is awesome!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much, Sean. It's only 5 for now, but there is a lot of worry that this will grow to encompass more Poecilotheria species. And as someone who has three pitbull crosses, I agree completely with your comparison to dogs. I've used the one myself before! haha It's the POTENTIAL of a bite that has folks so worried. Again, I don't think that should be ignored, but if precautions are taken, the likelihood of a bite shouldn't be high at all. I still have to get a Chilobrachy kaeng krachen (LOVE the name!). GREAT stuff, bud...thank you!!!

    • @aracknoinfiniteeseekertrip9689
      @aracknoinfiniteeseekertrip9689 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Moran lol that's funny because it's size, cheap price, being right there to buy, & the name was why I bought it too! I have a rare male betta fish that is bright freen-gold-black-white with fins like tentacles I named krachen already too! I had that concern as well with the poecilotherias, but if it comes up again to cover those others I don't have yet I'll be all over it taking no chances! I know where I can get the next poecilotheria on my list when I can get some new additions next (whenever that will be) but agreed! In my experience it's always the little dogs that are the biggest asshats! Lol guess they are like humans in that way with the Napoleon complex going on! Lol

My new chalcodes is pacing and I understand that she is new obviously and is probably feeling it out and I have the substrate high enough where she will not fall and hurt herself. Just curious on when it should stop or if it ever does.

    • @VetiExotics
      @VetiExotics 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the T hobby should start supporting them by donations. Now they have their foot in the door, theres no stopping their outreach. Because ive been so affected by the reptile ban in Connecticut, through my research I found that ct decided against ruling on inverts. They found it to be to messy, but that shows they did consider it.

  • @JJDigitalartStudio

    That law had to passed due to BAD Exotic animals keepers Tom. You and almost all T keepers are responsible and caring. However there are enough of the other kind that will get tired of the hobby and instead of giving them away or taking them to a pet store they release them into the wild. These types of animals do not belong in American biospheres. They mess of native species of many different kinds of natives and can breed with other animals creating hybrids that must be destroyed. They are trying to keep this kind of thing in each state to prevent ecological issues like the ones in Florida. It is a shame that the few make it hard for the many.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The original law (Lacey Act), yes. However, this new ruling on Poecilotheria is completely ill-advised and will have a completely adverse effect on the hobby and on long term survival of these species anywhere. If they had banned the importation of wild caught specimens, I would be in complete agreement. However, the interstate commerce ban, in my opinion, is a total overreach and does little but to make it more difficult for people in the United States to maintain healthy breading populations of these five species. By passing legislation like this, they are actually ENCOURAGING folks to ship illegally, both into the country and from state to state (not condoning this in any way, but it's true). Some states DO have laws prohibiting species that they think could be invasive. Like you said, Poecilotheria species could possibly survive in the wild in some of the warmer southern states. HOWEVER, those types of laws should be handled state to state. This law doesn't prohibit people from owning these species in the the US, as long as their state allows for them. What it does do is prohibit importing them from foreign countries and selling them across state borders. I've followed this law since the US FWS first asked keepers to contact them about their opinion on the genus, and their point was that they thought they were saving these species in the wild from the pet trade. In their minds, the pilfering of species from the wild is more of threat to these spiders than the deforestation that is currently decimating their habitats in their countries of origin. I just don't buy this. Again, it's a gray area, and the majority of folks at large wouldn't understand why hobbyists would want to have these spiders in the first place. To say the public would be unsympathetic to this would be an understatement. This is why I think that now, more than ever, its important for hobbyist to stop sniveling and start education people about these animals (and what's happening to them where they come from).

    • @JJDigitalartStudio
      @JJDigitalartStudio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the purpose of the law. Look at prohibition. Being a teacher you know history. It did NOT work. The people wanted to drink their hooch. Whether they made it themselves or bought it illegally. Some laws go too far instead of just protecting the native wildlife they went too far above the requisite. Sorry to hear about how badly the hobby will be affected.
