    I have 7 species of pokies but I still don’t have a rufilata. I’m so glad you do these pokie videos to show that if you stay calm they are really easy to deal with. I’ve never gotten any defensive behavior with mine but, I watched you for 2 years before I got my first t. You have taught me so much over the past 4 years. Thank you for all the info between your vids and podcasts. You are most definitely a benefit to the hobby.

    This video helped so much. My wife and I just rehoused our 5 inch rufilata. You've mentioned many times to do a walkthrough beforehand, and it's amazing how much easier it makes things. It gave us the confidence we needed for a very smooth rehouse.
    I didn't really understand the red slate part of the name, but we lit it up with LED after it had time to settle in and WOW!

    Tom,as a teacher you'll be proud of me.
    Never heard the word "festoon" before.
    Of course,from the way you used it,I could surmise the meaning but I looked it up anyway.
    I sometimes think Tarantula keepers,not you per se,and even the founders of the species are inherently color blind.
    This pokey is called red slate.
    I dont see any red in all the ones seen.
    I see a green spider.
    But time after time,I see a purple spider,the T owner says blue.
    Or he/she says blue and I see brown.I guess the viewer sees a different color than the camera and maybe the overhead lights play a part too.
    I am definitely not color blind.....not yet.

    I want to shout to your wife, Billie or Billy, not exactly sure how she spells it so plz forgive me for that, but she seems so supportive and helpful and friendly. I love to hear her laugh and to hear the way she makes suggestions and helps out all she can, while all the while keeping a steady hand on the camera. She's truly a treasure. So thank you Tom for the solid and down to earth care info and thank you Billie for all the hard work on and off screen. This is my number 1 channel for care and keeping. I love pokies, mine are very calm when moving. I have had good luck (knock on wood) walking from one enclosure to another with lite and calm use of a paint brush. I know they large and have the potential of a nasty bite but they aren’t a cranky spider. I know you probably don’t agree but I think that they are probably the best old world beginner T. Love your information. Watching you got me started in this hobby.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too, Larry. And I've found the same thing...they are usually pretty easy to keep calm. And I think that under the correct circumstances, someone could do quite well with them. The only issue is that people that first get into old world spiders start off being very intimidated by them. This can lead to rehousing mistakes that could, in theory, result in a defensive pokie. They are great when someone treats them with respect and stays calm...it's when people freak out that the accidents can happen. Thanks!

    Ahh, something I know something about, the shpagnum moss!! Yes it's bright green and people tend to think it's dyed because of that and their animal gets green on it. I had a turtle and used that moss and his feet and mouth turned green, but it's not dye, it's the equivalent of a grass stain, like when we rub grass we will get a green stain. But always be on the safe side, read the package. That said, this is a very beautiful Pokie!! Melody Trotter

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Melody! Well, thank you SO MUCH for that explanation! This stuff is supposed to be 100% natural, so I'm guessing that any green I may see will be natural and from the moss. :)

    Leaf litter fills many purpous. Like you said about bioactive. Another purpous is that many speicies. Ephebopus for example use leafs to incorporate in burrow construction. Many asian fossorials do the same. Also it looks nice for keeper. I seldom let plants acclamitize. I just put them in there together with spider. My local shop has the Exo-Terra Mini Extra Tall (12x12x24in). I will grab a couple at the end of the month as all my pokies are growing like weeds. I use peat moss from the garden centre for most of my spideys, but for sphagnum moss I collect mine live from Dartmoor just a couple of miles away.

    I have never done a setup i started watching dart frog videos and northern frogger does an excellent job with bioactive his tips will help with mold problems I see in a lot of tarantula enclosure videos. He hasn't posted in a long time computer issues. If you get a chance check him out.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'll check him out. To be clear, this is NOT a bioactive enclosure. It's an enclosure with a plant. Bioactives must be kept much more moist and rely on good bacteria and fungus to keep the correct levels in the tank. It's basically it's own little eco system. I don't try to do that with my tarantulas.

    I like to break the top opening of the cork round at an angle so the opening is more to the side or front that straight out the top and it seems to help because the spider will sit right in the opening and tends to come out and rest on the outside of the bark quite often because it's so easy to slip back in. My rufilata and my psalmopoeus irminia are set up this way and it's funny ....they'll keep one toe in the door at all times when they're out and when disturbed they'll jump back in and go deep but after a brief hide they'll be right back out.

    Nice tank and spider. Never too early for a drink. I agree!!🙂. Its often the people that have problems with maskulinety that says rubbish like that! On to setups. I always mix in cow dung into the substrate in those terrariums that are planted. I live on the countryside so we have lots of cows living here. I have done it for years. Provides good nutricion for the plants. I use maybe 30% cowdung and the rest soil or clay. I dry out the dung after collecting it. Iften it us rather dry anyway. Then i crumble it and mix it in Good for the substrate. Good for the climate, and free of charge. So there is a tip for you!

      As for maturity, it would be difficult to put an age on it because depending on temps and genetics, one person's female might be mature at 3 years while another might take 5. I would say that they are likely mature at 8+" or so.

    It is tough to move to a new school in midterm. How are you doing? Kids are able to fit in most places and are very flexible with new situations. It is only people my age who dislike change. How is Billie adjusting? I bet she loves the extra space. It is a great set up and a pretty T, although Pocis are not my fave. We are looking for a doodle of some kind *smaller or medium*. They go anywhere from 1800 to 3000 dollars. Mike would rather spend that on a dog, but still won't let me get a female T who is less than three years old. My hands are very bad due to RA. So I guess an older pup or young dog would be best.

Last year, I was in more of a co-teaching role, and there wasn't much for me to do. I like teaching, not standing around trying to get kids to participate on thier computeres. Billie is LOVING the new house as well. We are buying a plot of land right next to our house so that we are buffered on both sides. After years of "interesting" neighbors, we are enjoying the privacy. Awwwww...keep us updated on the puppy hunt. We have four dogs of our own and adore them. :)

    Tom,I gotta question for you.
    I'm a snake guy.Had 57 diff snakes at one time.
    Caught,kept,bred all that.
    What type of venom do the Old World tarantulas posses?
    Is it hemotoxic or neurotoxin?
    Cytotoxic?
    Or a mixed cocktail?
    My guess,based on your saying muscle spasms,heart palpitations,short of breath etc are symptoms of T envenomation
    would be mild neurotoxic..
    Has anybody done a study on this?
    You know I just found out recently that Brian Frey of "Monster Bug Wars" is a top expert in the field of venous.
    That show.....was THE reason I got interested in tarantulas.
    Whenever a tarantula was fighting a scorpion,a centipede,or the like,they always lost and were eaten.
    I felt real sorry for them.
    Somehow watching those bug fights I saw one of your T videos.

      That's what we're about here at Tom's Big Spiders...thinly veiled innuendo for the adults in the audience. It's how we roll... hahaha Thanks, bud!

    I just got a 6x6x8 Tarantula Cribs arboreal enclosure in a giveaway. It's too pretty to not fill. Do you have any species recommendations that could live in it as an adult?
    -I'm relatively new. 2 Ts rn. I'd love a C. versi or Y. diversipes, but I'm worried they'd get too big

      Hello and congrats! What a cool prize! Unfortunately, most adult arboreal species that I can think of would definitely outgrow an enclosure that size. It would be a great home until they hit about 4" or so, though!

    So I’ve seen some TH-camrs claim they don’t keep pokies? What’s the reasoning for most?

      Sadly, because of their bad reputation, many are scared of them. The rep is undeserved, though. They are actually very shy spiders overall. They are often demonized because of their speed and potent venom.

    My 3inch Rufilata has been in premolt for about a month now. He flipped on his back on a web hammock like he was about to molt but when i cane back an hour later he was back on his feet no molt. A week later he still hasnt molted but is clearly in heavy premolt. Anyone ever have something like this happen before?

      I've heard that happening with other species. Usually, they eventually flip back over again.

    Hi Tom,
    I have just got a 3cm Rufilata,it is only in a small plastic tube at the moment,with its cork bark ect inside,but there isn't room to place a water dish inside.So whats the best way to provide water for the T ?
    The enclosure is 9 inches tall, by 2.5 inches wide approx.There is plenty of moss,nice tall cork bark,1 or 2 plastic plant leaves ect,but it's almost impossible to get a water dish in 🤔
    Thanks Tom....
    James

      Hi, James! If there is plenty of moss, just make sure that the moss stays moist. You could also gently mist the enclosure and plants right before bed time a couple times a week. Hope that helps!

      Thanks Tom 👌
      Yes I have been lightly spraying every 2,3 days,but yes moss is the answer.......
      Once into a bigger enclosure,I'll add a milk bottle top,but at this size,it's impossible to get one in.Ill add a big lump of moss down the side and give it a good soak 👌
      Thanks Tom

    I always wondered if there is an antivenin for T's.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Joyce! Although they are doing experiments with tarantula venom and pain relief, their is no antivenin that I know of. This is probably because none have fatal bites.

      @@TomsBigSpiders Unless there is an allergic reaction to the venom. On me a mosquito bite leaves a huge welt that becomes inflamed. I have to use things that kill the pain and take Benadryl and get a shot to get the thing down. The last time I got stung by a bee my left arm swelled so bad I had to wear a pressure bandage. Also had a shot of adrenaline and Benadryl at the ER.
      Another reason I cannot own a T. Some kick hairs and if I got bit it could kill me from the allergy to it.

    Hey Tom how often do change your substrate, especially the old worlds that web a lot? I haven't change my substrate for 2 years since it doesn't get moldy.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, bud! For dry species, not often at all.
      For moisture dependent ones, I will rehouse if I discover prey rotting in burrows or if I feel that the soil is too dirty. I don't usually do that until 2 or 3 years though.
