I owned a hedgehog a few years ago and I thought they made great pets. I had my hedgehog when I was 10 until I was 12. I was a bit young but my hedgehog was easy to manage and I didn't have any problems. Here's some additional tips: When you first get your hedgehog, put a shirt or a small piece of clothing that smells like you in their sleeping hut/area so they can feel safer or more comfortable with you. Play with them once a day. I usually played with my hedgehog sometime in the evening when she was most active. I bought a small fence that was bigger than her cage so she could run around more and put her wheel in it and other toys that didn't fit in her cage. Sometimes I had her sit on my lap in a cloth sack, which allows them to feel safe and connected with you. It's a great way to bond! I also gave her meal worms for treats. I mostly used dried up ones as they were less expensive and lasted longer than live ones. For bathing, I would say once or twice a month depending on how dirty your hedgehog or its cage is. Use unscented baby soap and if necessary, a toothbrush to clean it's quills. Also, if you get your hedgehog as a baby it will experience quilling, which is completely normal for young hedgehogs. This is when their quills fall out and new ones grow in. This might cause your hedgehog to hiss more and become more moody, so be careful picking it up as new quills can be painful coming in. Pricing for the hedgehog itself varies depending if you get your hedgehog from a breeder or shelter, etc. Some things you will need for your hedgehog are: Cage Running wheel Bedding (no wood ships or cedar!) Food and water dish/bottle Chew toys Sleep sack (optional) And other fun toys for your hedgehog to play with. I would recommend white bedding so you can easily tell if your hedgehog is injured or its stool looks unusual. Also, if you use a water bottle make sure the metal ball is always working and check it regularly so your hedgehog doesn't get dehydrated if it stops working. Also, tea tree oil is very toxic for hedgehogs so do not handle your hedgehog if you used tea tree oil . Have fun and enjoy your hedgehog!
Yeah this video needs to be changed to have a more positive tone. You can relay these facts but also offer easy solutions. She sounds like she really finds them to be dirty annoying animals. Also she should include at least five more positive things to know about them.

I got a hedgehog a week ago. His owners before us didn’t pay attention to him at all. His owners were willing to sell him to us. We got him and he was put in my room in his cage. He was very jumpy and his spikes were crossed. Now (a week later) he is very active and he drinks water and eats his food and he also runs around in a clear ball we got him. He is doing great! He is still getting used to being held because he didn’t get enough attention but other than that he is great! These tips really helped and hopefully my hedgehog will trust me fully over time.

A few years back i had rescued a baby hedgehog (about two weeks old) whose mum had died, i kept him until he was fully grown and i got such a strong bond with this wild hedgehog. He would sleep in my hood and pockets and follow me around, i knew i shouldn't have been keeping it since in England you can't keep the wild hedgehogs as pets so sadly gave him to a friend who owns a hedgehog sancturary
I saved some wild hedgehogs who were on the road, so cars wouldn't run them over..now they live in our garden. We even built a little house that we placed in some bushes under a tree where they can stay during the winter and they really love to eat the bird food falling out of the bird house :) It's great to watch those little guys run around in the garden :)
I love this video. You bring up many points that aren't brought up in alot of the other hedgehog videos I've seen. The more information out there the more knowledgeable pet owners can be. ❤ hedgehogs are so darn cute everyone wants one; videos like these allow people to know if that's actually the right choice for them.
This is an old video haha but I got a hedgehog on a quick whim but I did A LOT of research in advance. I have a grumpy little guy, who is slowly getting better with human interaction. I bond with him, after dinner time, so he’s pretty good at coming out and checking things out! He also refuses live insects 😂 he likes his expensive, fancy, cat food. He’s only almost 4 months old, but he’s a delight and I can’t wait for our adventures!
Just a good reason why research is very important. And to think I wanted a hedgehog once. But now after watching this I realized caring for a hedgehog is difficult. Guessing I'm not getting a hedgehog. Very informative video and very interesting. Great video Tori.
Watching this video reminded me how much I miss my two hedgehogs and how much I loved to take care of them. It was hard work but it was always worth it for them. I wished my little babies lived for longer and it’s so sad that they are prone to diseases. That’s 1000% the hardest part. No pet mom wants to watch their babies suffer so it really tore me apart. I’ll always miss them and I’m so happy I got to take care of them though
Tori, just found your hedgehog care videos. I have watched 1.5 so far & wow, they are really good. I am dedicating the rest of my afternoon to learning from your videos. This has been a challenging year and my pets and animal videos help keep me sane. So thanks for an afternoon of free therapy!! Peace.♡
absolutely adorable!!!!!! we rescued a little lady from people that did NOT look after her and she became SO SO beautiful, even accepting us both (which is something hedgies don't usually do). Unfortunately, we lost her due to a tumor, but she was the sweetest little thing. Your video is brilliantly simple yet effective and absolutely correct. Thanks for that!!!
Thank you for this video! I was wanting to get a hedgehog but some of the info you talked about made me realize I should wait a few more years before getting one:)
! I wanted to mention the quills leave stinging after effect on your hands for a couple minutes though you get used to it. Also you can’t move after getting quilled or freak out. This is something that is REALlY hard to get used to with when having a hedgehog so I recommend keeping it in mind
I'm going to get s hedgehog in 4 to 5 months and I'm so exited I have been binging all your hedgehog related videos to try and learn everything I need for them to live a happy life.
Thank you for explaining the reality of having a hedgehog. In the past I have had rabbits & guinea pigs. I saw cool videos of them on the Internet and thought that they would be easy to have as a pet. Boy was I wrong! It wasn’t fair to them that they ended up with me as an owner. I realized I am the type of person that wants a cute pet, but with a little work. (Which doesn’t exist lol). . Most of these pet TH-cam channels do not explain all of the work that goes into having these pets.
You are one VERY educated pet/animal owner. There should be more people willing to learn how to properly take care of their animals with respect and responsibility. You are setting a really great example.
0:04 I was chilling on my bed right? Then she said “oops, sorrry Draco.” Oh my gosh I flipped. “Oh my god she named her hedgehog Draco!!!” And I felt the sudden urge to comment about it.
I get my baby heagehog In august!!! She should be three weeks this coming up weekend! I’m so excited to bond with her the breeder I’m going thro is amazing and has helped a lot!
I just felt impulsed to buy one of these little guys but just like my sudden urge to buy a gecko i found a video and made myself come to the reasonable understanding that this little guy needs much more time then i can give him and thats okay.. Thank you🙏
I have had my hedgehog for 2-3 years now. I love her so much! I have a heat lamp and it almost set my house on fire 😬 but now I just have a burned circle on my floor. Be careful and remember to turn the lamp off if it’s just sitting on the floor and you have to move it to open the cage.
i have found a hedgehog, and hes been outside for 2 days now (during the day) he looks around 6 months old and he was really hungry. he was happy to be handled and very active. when we brought him in, he was really happy to be pet and was wondering around. he was healthy, (nothing that we could see on the outside of his body) and was really cute. we have many hedgehogs that come out this time of year, and now um I'm doing research to keep him, cause he looked to be abandoned.
i saw a wild hedgehog today in my garden . I adore them so much . They are so adorable . The one i saw was really small . I never knew that their lifespan was so short , i wanted to take the hedgehog to the house and have it as a pet but then i realized that what i thought was horrible and i wanted to let the animal free , but first i took some photos with it hahaha . I wanted to give it something to eat but i had no idea what hedgehogs eat . So i just gave him some water and it was so cute how he was drinking it . Love them so much :D
Hey, I wanted just say that when I take my hedgehog out I prefer to do it in the evening because when I do it after 8:30 she will hiss and wont come out of her ball but if I do it during the day she is super sweet and is very social. :)
vcolbs im thinking of getting one but is it better to buy one as an adult or as a baby? i kinda want mine to be social with me you know , when i do get one
We were sold two hedgehogs as sisters... they got along fine but i wish I'd known before! Unfortunately one has passed away from wobbly hedgehog syndrome. Even as a hedgehog owner I learned some things from this video, thanks :D
Tori: Hey guys do today, Oop... sorry draco... I know I’m loud. Draco: Listen lady your first mistake was waking me up when it’s bright. And second your being loud. Ima bite you🤣
I am really missing having a guinea pig but the fiance is highly allergic to hay, which is about 80% of their diet so I lve been looking into other small animals that dont require hay. I really thought I wanted a hedgehog and they are so so cute but after doing my research I think I will settle on admiring from a far. A few things I thought, meh I can handle that, but the anti social tipped the scales. This was really helpful. They are too cute but not everything thing is for every one and being cute isnt a good enough reason to adopt a living creature. The search continues! Thanks so much. Very informative. Totally appreciate it
I used to have a hedgehog, sadly the place I got her from was a crappy place that had a BUNCH of hedgehogs in one cage.. and didn’t carry them ever.. so when i adopted her she was not used to people at all. She was a baby, it was very hard to get her to be okay with people. I loved her though ❤️
This is so helpful! I had to tell my mom and grandma that The vet is a lot, they said it's a lot of money for most pets to go to the vet, If I get a hedgehog I will name it Blaze after you're hedgehog, even if you were to read this but, Thank you to everyone who were to read this!
I have i hedgehog called coco!Research is needed,I’ve seen that people really don’t know much. The store owners where I bought him didn’t even know anything...
Y’all Gay i have a question uhm is it better to buy a hedge hog when its like a baby? so you can help it grow up and they would know you better and grow up with you?
@@faithg27 I bought mine when it was 8 weeks old. They need to be with their mothers until then. If you get them much older, they can be more aggressive because they haven't bonded to your scent.
I was given a hedgehog on short notice. A friend of mine had to move for schooling and was told they can’t keep their hedgehog. I took on the hedgehog since I have had a past taking care of hedgehogs. I really do think he is my blessing.
I found a hedgehog on the side of the road while it was raining last night. :'( He was shaking like crazy, and I really wanted to take him home. But I was afraid that I'd be ripping him away from his natural habitat, that I couldn't provide the proper care that he needed, etc. He uncurled from his ball and started exploring when I put him underneath some hedges, so I think that he was just cold and couldn't find shelter in the street.
I impulsively bought a hedgehog from my friend who could no longer take care of him, we are bonding very well so far and I’ve got a nice big 3ftx5ft cage for him and all his necessities. I love him very much his name is Nugget, he’s a male so he is very shy and tries to ram me sometimes but he’s been doing really good lately with interacting with me. I’m very proud of him ❤️

The more information out there the more knowledgeable pet owners can be. ❤ hedgehogs are so darn cute everyone wants one; videos like these allow people to know if that's actually the right choice for them.
Wow... Absolute deal breaker, didn't expect that lol.
Yeah the nocturnal thing was a deal breaker, my bf would be very upset if he doesn't get sleep lol
Wow I'm glad that I watched this, I cannot handle this responsibility at the moment lol
This should be REQUIRED to view by all who are considering a new hedgehog pet. BRAVO for a well done educational video that I thoroughly enjoyed!
5:10 his face tho 😂😂
🤔
BAHAHA CUTEEE
They are adorable!
ahhh Draco is too cute! I definitely agree with these facts even after owning leo for only about a month :)

Oof I showed this to my mom and before u started talking she saw the word exotic and said No..
Mine follows me around everytime I get him out lol. I love you videos so much they help me out a lot
Thank you for this video! I was wanting to get a hedgehog but some of the info you talked about made me realize I should wait a few more years before getting one:)
I mean,
If one check up for my dog is about $300+, $60 sounds pretty cheap!
$60 just to be seen, as in to get an appointment with the vet. That means it doesn't include any medicines, procedures or tests they need.
! I wanted to mention the quills leave stinging after effect on your hands for a couple minutes though you get used to it. Also you can’t move after getting quilled or freak out. This is something that is REALlY hard to get used to with when having a hedgehog so I recommend keeping it in mind
I’m looking to purchase a hedgehog, but I’m not certain where to get one from. 🦔 Where did you purchase your hedgie?
Search hedgehog pet store on Google and filter witch are good and bad that's how I did it don't quote me
Sexy Sans I can help, what state do you live in
Go to granite state hedgehogs New Hampshire they are good
Sometimes exotic pet stores
no dont listen
to everyone else
please select a
local pet breeder.
I was totally looking into getting one of these before you said they play with themselves! 😂
Pretty much all animals do.lmao
Thank you🙏
It’s a good thing I watched this, I’m not sure if I can care for it properly
And with one quick video, I realize I never want a hedgehog. This is not necessarily a bad thing.
get a beta & don't wash its tank
YEAH BOIIIIIIIII
Ugh I love this! You’re so knowledgeable on this!!! Love love love! I want one so bad but this really made me open my eyes!
“His name is Draco.”
* daughter and I turn to to each other and grin*😂😂😂
Thank you. This video just convinced my wife we don’t need one and I’m laughing. Haha
Aww your headgehog is so flipping cute and great video just subbed great channel
"keeping them warm" ah...being a Filipino living in the Philippines finally have a use
i saw a wild hedgehog today in my garden .
Why are people surprised of how uncomfortable they can be? I'm surprised that you can actually hold them without severe stinging 😄😅
Verena Straub Wait... They sting?? I thought they just stick...
Verena Straub no...I’ve held one the quills don’t hurt unless it’s scarred or provoked
It doesn't sting, it pricks. Like getting poked with a needle
@@chubbybunny6975 Thank you, English is not my mother tounge
Kathy Gee lol
I’m getting a hedgehog when I move into my apartment and I’m so excited ☺️💞 you’re videos have been so helpful!!
Thanks for the video😁 I was sold at "nocturnal". At least now I won't be the only one still up at 4 am!
I went from rabbit to gerbil to hedgehog. I now am leaning more towards a hedgehog thanks to you.
I just saved a wild hedgehog today and find them super cute. Now I know I won't get one in the next few years. Thank you for the information!
Faith g I think a baby is good as long as it’s not to young
Please tell me I'm not the only one who not only learned but laughed when she said they masturbate😂
Ima bite you🤣
Please put this poor thing back in its home!
Omg I love this
They are the cutest little things. Thought I'd love to have one but no thank you. Thanks for sharing this video
Totally appreciate it
I live in Arizona I don’t need a heat lamp I live in heat 😂
Itzz georgie same lol my hedgie has natural heat from my window xD
Sammeee.
What if I keep my house above 74? Plus I live in florida
georgie gonzalez that doesn’t mean the inside of ur house is that temp... unless ur broke and don’t have air conditioning
Jake Fulton well the only problem is my mom is worried about heat lamps and heat pads
your hedgie is so cutee!! & your dogs too! + what camera do you use?!
Thank you! & a Canon g7x!
5:59 Sonic: TAILS!? You KNOW what the ring on the door means!!
Ayo!
This is so helpful! I had to tell my mom and grandma that The vet is a lot, they said it's a lot of money for most pets to go to the vet, If I get a hedgehog I will name it Blaze after you're hedgehog, even if you were to read this but, Thank you to everyone who were to read this!
Here in new Zealand we dont need to buy a hedgehog, we can just find one!
Lol
Too lucky!!
I just got a hedgehog yesterday! She is so sweet. She is also extremely smart. I named her Penelope!❤️
I was given a hedgehog on short notice. A friend of mine had to move for schooling and was told they can’t keep their hedgehog. I took on the hedgehog since I have had a past taking care of hedgehogs. I really do think he is my blessing.
My hedgehogs name is Sirius Black! I love the Harry Potter themed names! :)
Mine was named Moony!
6:06 oh well there’s going to be a lot of sonic fan fiction now
Your videos help a lot with my hedgehog knowledge ! Thank you!
I’m very proud of him ❤️
Note: his cage isn’t really a “cage” I keep his lid off and the bottom is carpet with pine shavings
