    Wow!! She is so beautiful. She reminds me of my Stromatopelma calceatum Josephine....So very shy. I have not had a bad experience with rehoming yet, but we have only been through two. The calmer I am, the calmer she is. But when it's time to go, she goes so fast I can barely see her. I have had to search the enclosue to reassure myself she actually went in.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hi tom pokie are my favourite genus and hate they get such a bad rep when you are calm and prepared like you say things very rarely go wrong i dont think ive ever had a threat pose from a pokie. would also love to see you back on scotts inverts live again in the future.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that the key is being calm and prepared. I think that folks that struggle with them are often coming into the situation already jacked up, which can lead to mistakes. And I'll definitely go back on again! I had a blast last time!

    Thank you Tom for speaking out against demonizing these spiders. As someone who has always loved spiders, the “hype” so to speak didn’t scare me away from the possibility of keeping them but at the same time I don’t think it’s a very good practice for the hobby.
    They’re animals, and just like any other animal, all we need to do is show them some understanding and respect. A rehousing must be terrifying. A T can’t comprehend that we’re just trying to help, so the poor thing thinks we intend to do harm.
    I wouldn’t even consider it right now since I’m only a beginner, but I’m looking forward to eventually getting into keeping OW species.

    • @JAY.POT.502
      @JAY.POT.502 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Is the same as any animal-if you provoke it enough,it will get pissed off !

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for being open minded. I think that people have problems with them if they aren't confident in their rehousings or if they harbor some fear of the species. Folks who go into rehousings afraid can do things that jack of the spider and lead to bad situations. I try to show how the can go quite smoothly if you remain calm and if you're prepared. :) Thanks again!

    Hi Tom, I just had to comment on your Shirt! SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK! Awesome!!
    The P. Subfusca is such a beautiful spider. I wish these guys were more available in the hobby. We need more breeding Projects for these guys! Great rehousing as always. I have a Regalis which is my first pokie sling and it’s always a joy to watch. It will ocasionally lay on the front of the cork bark. I haven’t officially rehoused it yet but I look forward to it when it’s time. Your rehouse videos are always my go to! Thanks Tom! I also sent you an email on your buzzsprout podcast. If you can’t get to it no worries :)

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! I LOVE those books and the illustrations.
      Sadly, I've learned that they aren't great sellers for many vendors, which is why they aren't offered as much and the prices are starting to go up. Factor in the fact that you can't sell the Sri Lankan species across state lines, and it makes these guys much more difficult to find. And it's a shame, as they are some of the most stunning spiders available.
      What date did you send it? I'll go double check!

    • @TheGlamPea27
      @TheGlamPea27 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomsBigSpiders me too! And it is a shame. They stand out so much to me I wish they truly were more available.
      I cannot remember. It was several weeks ago but it was regarding slings that are really, really small. I have an H. Orellanai that’s 1/16 of an inch. I have it in a small desk vial with a bit of moss and keep it moist. I feed it pre-killed prey. Is there anything else you recommend for slings that small?

    I've always been grateful for your good advice on Pokies, since my first leap into T's was 3 different species of them. Thanks to you, I've never been afraid. I find them to be shy and absolutely non-aggressive. They'd rather hide in their nests behind their corks, than ever come out when I have the tops off for cleaning. I use the same type of lime-aide bottle as you with a plexi shield for transfers, so my fingers never come near them. Since Oct '20, my 1' Regalis sling is now just shy of 3", my 1.75" in ch Regalis and Vitatta are nearing 5" and my 2" Faciata is a whopping 6.75". I caught her spread out hunting on the glass, so I got a really good measurement. She's my extra cricket disposer as she frequently comes out to people watch and mooch extra chow. I have four more Pokie species coming my way in the next couple of months so I guess you could call me a P-fan!

    Great video Tom,good stuff.
    So look forward when you have a new vid.
    Ive watched many,many videos over the last 3 years between yourself,Richard, Alex Kat,Marita,Petko.
    No doubt,the calmness and smoothness in your techniques are why you havent had any problems with all the Pokies you have.
    I do notice,however,that you can see nervousness on the part of other keepers who jab at the Pokies too much.
    I can definitely see why nervousness,constant jabbing,and too quick movements would make an H mac or OBT
    come unglued.
    In my dealings with many non venomous snakes over 50 some years,I never tried to force anything on them or display any
    movement that could be a threat.
    Hope all is well and enjoy the rest of the summer.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Rebel! That's the main point that I make when folks ask if they are ready for the more "advanced" species. Those who are not confident in their rehousing abilities or are rehousing a species that they are intimidated by can do things that set the spider off and produce a crazy and potentially dangerous rehousing. One of my points for posting so many rehousing videos is so that people can not only see how the spider acts, but how I'm acting with the spider. Fear an intimidation are dangerous emotions when rehousing the fast and potent ones. Thanks for chiming in!!!

    When i kept many of these i often kept them in corktubes. When it was time to rehouse, i most of thevtime just transferred the corktube with the spider inside to a bigger tank. They almost always stayed inside the tube which made rehouses very simple.

    Assuming all goes well, I'm going to a reptile expo tomorrow. I definitely have a shopping list, but thanks to your videos, I'm really tempted to ask my trusted/local t dealer if they have a pokie that they'd recommend. I've already gotten a P. regalis at their recommendation. Rehousing him was a bit stressful, but I did it successfully! And now I'm already worried that his new tanks is already too small, oops.
    By the way, I picked up some simply essential storage containers w/ latch from Bed, Bath and Beyond to use as tanks, and if you don't need them for display, I think they work pretty well? The ones I got were $4/per, and they're pretty deep, so lots of room for burrowing. I just thought they were a nice, cheaper alternative? I drilled holes in mine, but again, $4 each. |D

Is it normal for p.metallica to not do her own decoration even after 2 weeks? I am just curious what was the longest time you had to wait for a pokie to accept food again :)

I've been using cork bark tubes with enclosures that size, and mine have been either settling in or behind the tubes. It can take several weeks for to settle in an feel comfortable, so I wouldn't panic yet!

    Oh man hell yes one of my lil dream ts to have idk why but have always wanted all the pokies just something about them I like plus they some in such a variety of colors of lighter n darker plus greens n yellows and even the metallica blue on the rufilata and if ya can find full cork bark logs that aren't to awful big that will fit in the tanks the pokies love em they will go down n and close the top off to molt and also of its convenient the females will drop their egg sacks inside and far as I can tell has been quite perfect for the females as long as ya let the tanks sorta dry out b4 she has her sack and the only issue I've ran into so far is the female will drop the sack and come out n drink but if ya dribble some water down a side inside the log for her to catch a slight drink she will stay with the sack and if theirs any bad eggs infertil n such long as it's not super moist inside the bad eggs just break n dry out other then that it's great

      Me too, Eric! My goal is to keep them all. They are easily my favorite arobeal genus and tied as my favorite overall genus of tarantulas. And awesome tip! Thank you!

    Hi Tom interesting video. I have a question about the species orphnaecus sp blue panay. You have already published a video about this species. My only question is: is it a terrestrial or arboreal species. Or is it a mix of both, such as the OBT or the Chromatopelma. Many Thanks

      As far as I know they’re fossorial. Keep just like you would a Chilobrachys.

      Hi, Ion! Sorry, I thought that I covered this in the video. I've had people tell me that they are "semi-arboreal" in the wild, but I've seen no evidence of that with mine. Even when given some space to go up, they burrowed.
