    My sis was dr Drew's patient at Las encinas hospital I believe he saved her life, for many years. Dr drew literally taught us families on the weekend, in a classroom setting, about the addiction taking over our loved ones. My sis did not really listen to dr drew when he told her to wait on taking anti depressants so she could really know what drove her addictions. She wanted the anti depressants bc her mental state was more than she could bear. Las encinas did wonders for her, giving her 15 yrs more of life before she took her own life. I don't think she would have lasted another day had Las encinas not accept her

      I am so sorry that happened to you. I was there during Dr Drew’s reign. He overemphasized trading addiction to drugs to addiction to a cult. It is sad that because of his love of AA there are no other options. It was hell at Las Encinas. For a number of reasons, but worse is being in the shadow of 12 Step. I had a belly full of that crap. It is slowly being discredited as new theories on mental illness and substance abuse emerge. Las Encinas is lousy with Dr Drew. The “experts” at LE only gave me a few days of Librium when they “withdrew” me from Benzos. I went through months of having withdrawal symptoms. Everyone is an addict to them. They preached that addiction a disease you are stuck with.

      Whoever needs to hear this... I was able to put down my addiction with the help of anti-anxiety/depression meds and therapy... and YES... Jesus's God. I would NOT be alive if I had not chose to embrace and study The Teachings of Jesus in The New Testament of The Bible DAILY. The goal is not to be on perscription meds forever unless you REALLY need it. Addiction is a symptom of Pain from A Deep Emotional/Psychological Wound... or mental illness. The root of the wound needs to be healed. Just whatever you do... NEVER give up. Jesus's God is NEVER giving up on YOU. He is WAITING for you to pour Him your heart... with what He already knows. He WANTS your troubles... people are not gods... Jesus's God of The Holy Spirit IS.

And yet, most people will tell you that they DON'T like it, but it has started to feel like the ONLY way to meet new people. And let's not forget how these dating apps use the same type of toxic algorithms that more typical social media uses to everyone's detriment. I have felt that way for decades and I believe they are the same because neither have any morals tho it's for different reasons. This podcast though added another dimension to it because both are addicted and I hadn't really thought of the addictions of the wealthy but it's quite obvious. Their addictions are to money to security which is a false security and to being number one and destroying anyone else who comes in their path that may threaten it in any way shape or form.
      I remember working in a temp job and the boss woman who was also temp looked at me and she said--I know what you're thinking.
      AND I thought: it was about noon & was thinking about lunch. HOW does she know that? She was worried about me because I was much smarter than her it seems. And I have to credit her with noticing that which I hadn't even thought about that till now. BUT I guess she thought I was smarter than her and I probably was, just saying😉 but I was only thinking about lunch. I certainly wasn't thinking about taking her dhitty little temp job. AND
      then she called me into her office and she said: YOUR analysis on these legal documents is so different than-- and she named this young guy. I thought-- YEAH, so what? I knew that his would probably be pretty superficial although he was planning to be a lawyer. I could tell from his personality he wasn't exactly in possession of great depth in any way, shape or form. THAT was her reason for firing me. • @billmcgubbins1476
      @billmcgubbins1476 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trauma is normal and common for 99.99% of all life on earth, let alone people. Only postmodern western societies are able to pretend that trauma (and by proxy, any discomfort of any kind) isnt normal and common. And also the same societies attempt to erase all trauma from existence and the results speak for themselves. People live 20 years never having seen any type of adversity AT ALL suddenly realize that the world (and all life) is sculpted by trauma and pain. And then go on shooting rampages or kill themselves. Everything is needed in balance. ☯️ can't have happiness without pain. Cannot have ecstasy without trauma. Trauma is REQUIRED in order to put life into perspective.

    • @johannagrace7768
      @johannagrace7768 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Walk a mile in my shoes and see how many skills you have to ‘deal with it’. Trauma changes you. Trauma that begins before birth and continues well into adulthood compounds. It is not trauma + trauma. It is trauma x trauma.
      RESPONSES to trauma are necessary for survival. Over time, we become wired for survival, not everyday living. It takes the right information, the right support and the right strategies to overcome. And only then can you find the resources you need to confront what has actually happened to you. The abuse, the betrayal, the abandonment. You have to find the courage to live, every day, with the grief. The grieving that never, ever ends. Because you have lost so much: your sense of safety and security, your sense of self, your ability to trust in other people. AND WHILE YOU ARE GOING THROUGH ALL OF THIS, you have to make the choice, every single day, to be in a world that is full to the brim with people who can and do inflict this kind of pain on others. You have to find a way to feel safe in a world that you know is not.
      So keep your stupid creeds to yourself. If you had walked this path, you wouldn’t be so f’ing flippant.

    Thank you Dr. Drew for your support of maintaining family for a child’s stability . Although I had a few traumas when I was young , my divorce at age 49, after 23 years of marriage , heightened the trauma again and shook up our son whom had just turned 21 . Now 22 years later my son , his son ( our grandson) and his mom live in my house. It’s cost me a lot of my savings but their family is intact and I think it’s provided some stability for my grandson. I’m broke financially because I used their inheritance for them while I’m still alive. I’ve prayed about this over and over .

      Why do you think that money you worked for and saved is his inheritance? I don't like to see adults sacrificing themselves while they are alive, just to have a bunch if money to leave kids. I have grown tired of the notion that low self esteem is the cause of violence, bullying, and narcissism. In the real world, predators look down on their prey, and feel they have a right to impose their will on another. In geopolitics you never see a weak country, and culture, that invades its neighbors in order to take their land and resources. It's always the countries, and cultures, that think they are superior, and deserve to have what others own. Look no further than the line of David in the Old Testament for a perfect example. You see the same thing happening with the global Oligarchy, who think they are the superior race - the race of the rich. They believe they are so superior that they deserve to have it all, while telling the rest of humanity that by 2030 we'll "own nothing and be happy."

    My aunt (58) takes several medications for "severe depression", bi-polar and ADHD. After living with her for a while, and lots of research, it's obvious she's a narcissist who abuses her medications, which she has taken for decades, and alcohol. I feel her depression is caused by feelings suppressed by her narcissist behaviors. She doesn't do anything but lay in bed for about 24 out of 30 days a month. On the days she gets up she snorts her Ritalin then drinks which makes her go into a psychosis where she talks to herself for hours, literally like 8-12 hours. She repeats negative insults and complains about everyone/everything else. She lies and lashes out at others. She's too lazy to do her own dishes, clean up her room, or be kind to others unless used as manipulation. It's sad that she doesn't realize the problem is HER, the reason for her failed friendships and severed family relationships. What she sees when she finally gets up and looks in the mirror HAS to be depressing! All the meds in the world won't fix narcissism that she blames on mental illness. Extreme narcissism rots people to the core. People, do what you can to prevent this trend!

      As a parent, I'm glad its being taught. There is nothing wrong with being able to name your emotions, understand how they make you feel, and have coping skills. A lot of adults can't do this. It's not excusing the bad behavior, it's giving you the information to best work with the bad behaviors. My kidd has ODD. I never went to therapy as a kid for various reasons, I don't have that diagnosis. I just called it my f you streak. And there are times I tell myself to just shut up and do the thing but I cannot make myself do it past that point. And part of it is kids learn that they are people too who have a say over their feelings and bodies, and that is very frustrating for adults who want them to be like well trained dogs because we all grew up with the idea that children are required to obey instantly.

    As a paramedic in the late 70s, I noticed a pattern in the way we were treated by wealthy and poor patients. It was one of disrespect for what we were doing for them. Later, as a RN working in ERs, a pattern emerged, primarily among the indigent, as the wealthy did not frequent the facilities that I worked in, of bipolarity being a very frequent comorbidity among those who were frequent fliers or came in for minor, non-emergent issues. These are the factors that strain the system that we have. Furthermore, there is a disconnect in the type of care and the use of resources by these populations. Not only would handling a lot of ‘nonemergent’ emergency room and ambulance calls be more cost efficient through use of primary care physicians and/or urgent care clinics, but the comorbidities of mental health could be better treated. Of course, this would impact the earnings of corporate run medical facilities and their patient mining with massive ERs, but we have to face the facts of how the healthcare dollar is spent, whether it is private pay, insurance, or tax-funded. More attention needs to be brought to very frequent mental health issues that Dr Drew reveals and our lack of addressing them appropriately.

      @george344 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Pepe Pupu mental illness is part of mental health. If you don’t treat mental health as well as physical health, the potential for illness increases. When illness, either mental or physical is s present, then a decent system is needed to treat it by curing it or reducing its negative impact. Our system is split between the two aspects of health, but our bodies and minds are not. We do not practice holistic care and we don’t have continuity of care in what we do practice. Forty plus years in the field and all I see is a decline in how we manage healthcare.

    "Status is enhanced by having a mental health issue." ... "I don't know how to deal with that..." This is hard for most of us to grasp until you understand how pervasive Critical Race Theory is in the educational system. Everyone is categorized as either oppressor or oppressed. No child wants to be seen as an oppressor. There's a hierarchy of victimhood and so the more boxes you can check, the more oppressed you are. This is one reason there is an explosion in the number of kids identifying as trans. Every child going through puberty feels out of place in their own skin. Instead of it being normalized and helping adolescents cope with it, the world around them makes them question if they're in the right body.
    Anyway, having a mental health issue is one way kids avoid being ostracized as an oppressor.

    What a fantastically opinionated real human being! I recently discovered that opinionated could be a compliment and an asset for the possessor of this often maligned quality. Most wonderful interview. As a defender of the male since forever (I am a first-born female) it is so heartening to see the emergence of the whole man. I am subscribing.

    Dr drew is a amazing American. Like Judge Joe Brown he says it like it is and the truth. Even though it’s detrimental to his career. I appreciate his ballllz

    @14:50 is that missing chapter of The Mirror Effect available anywhere? I started reading about the French Revolution and French philosophy of that era back in 2019 because the crazy of that era has been seeping into ours, it would be amazing to read Dr. Drew's take on it.

    Around 54 minute mark he talks about Al-Anon!!! I rarely hear about the Al-Anon Family Groups. It has helped me for more than 15 years. If people understoood how much they are affected by someone's addiction, that 12-step program would be the largest.

    Thank you for discussing the way you handled kids alcohol at parties. When my daughter grew up said she was too afraid to do anything “are you kidding?”because “the world would stop” So actually my children are cleaner than me and my husband. 😊

    I was hooked on coke/crack and alcohol. It leads to mental problems, homelessness etc. But Meth and opioids/fentanyl will be the total downfall of this country. But it is really a moral problem. Btw, I love the doc, no b.s., just straight up truth.

    I’m 22. I grew up on video games. We never had internet though. I also however was very active in wrestling and gymnastics. I will say without a doubt that screens and the internet are single handedly destroying our youths attention spans and motivation. I now teach gymnastics, and the amount of kids that are basically useless sacks of bones are insane. These kids today have no ambition, no skills, no drive, nothing. They just want to awkwardly exist in this weird state of half computer/human

    I am a retired shrink practiced in nyc for decades and i used to say to my male patients( they only came in for sexual problems ),that it was strength not weakness to be honest with self or others about negative emotions like fear, worthlessness, etc..I encouraged them to start mens support groups 40 yrs ago, this argument about redefining what male strength is was right on, it is hard for men to do this, so it takes courage and that is male strength!
