Replacing Rear Suspension Arms and Polybushes - Land Rover Discovery 3

    An entertaining and comprehensive look at removing and replacing rear suspension arms on the Discovery 3.
    At some point you’ll need to replace suspension bushes and probably want to know if you can do it yourself on your drive. People will advise that you change the entire wishbone and not just the bushes. This humorous little film I made in the summer of 2017 shows all the ins and outs of what to expect when tackling this as a DIY Mechanic. I replaced the rear brake pipes and hoses, the toe links, drop links, knuckle bushes and the upper and lower wishbones, which came with polybushes preinstalled.
    The part most people struggle with is the rear upper bolt, which is often rusted in place and needs cutting out. Mine was no different as the nearside rear upper mounting bolt would not come out. All I can say is that I took everyone else’s advice and used a reciprocating saw. I wouldn’t like to try an angle grinder, as I can’t see there being enough space to get to the bolt, the space is tighter than it looks in there. The nearside wasn’t nearly as rusty and didn’t require cutting. Another problem is the nearside knuckle bush bolts. Mine were rusted solid and needed a combination of cutting and heating up with a blow torch. But you’ll see all this when you watch the video.
    For your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

    Fantastic effort you've put into this video chap. I think all DIYers can relate to this! You had me laughing at different bits as it reminded me of past c*** ups! The D3 rear arms we left to a garage in the end after reading up on the forums and after watching this I can see why! Good on you for cracking on, keep them coming!

      Thanks for watching, Chris! Really glad you enjoyed it. We've all tightened bolts when we should have been loosening them, but only some of us are brave enough to admit to it. As for making more videos, I'm sure there'll be more, as we both know the Discovery 3s and 4s were all sold broken and stay broken throughout their usable lives. One day mine will work for long enough to take it off road...

    Brilliant work. This sums up my own experiences of working on cars. You watch a video where the job is done is 17 minutes, so you take it on, only to discover the very first bolt shears and takes you 4 hours to remove. Very enjoyable!

    How universal all of our struggles are on old rusty parts. I don’t even own a Land Rover, yet I found the video to be easily relatable. It reminded me all to well of my own struggles replacing all the suspension on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I thought many times I would just cut the car in half and let it rust away in my driveway. However we continue on until the job is complete. Great video. Cheers from America. Job well done.

    • @WeAreBigKids
      @WeAreBigKids  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Disco 3's are going for less than £5,000 nowadays, and you've already got your bigger sockets. Go get one! They are really good machines, if you can keep them running.
      I would prefer if there was a simpler version, without all the electronic gizmos - central locking, electric wing mirrors, electric seats, electric windows, electric parking brake and all that stuff.

    Top video, entertaining right throughout. Got my D3 last July 2008 gs with 130k, decided when i got it i would do as much as i could mechanically myself although ive never worked on cars before (discovery 3 not the best place to start) so had a crack at a full oil and filter service.
    All went smoothly until i got to the transfer box and instead of loosening the drain plug i was tightening it stripping the thread on the transfer box. I spent the next 3 full days searching for a way to fix the problem so i could make it to whaddon 4x4 day in my new d3 on the weekend. Was pointed in the direction of thread tapping kits on the facebook owners page, having no experience with anything like that i felt way in over my head but like you in the video had no option but to carry on.
    Said thread tapping was a success, and i was off. Wading through everything whaddon could throw at the D3, it was worth every minute of blood sweat and tears of the previous few days - until the end of the day when i got an almighty squeal from the handbrake. A quick look at the back wheels and i realise that the plugs to stop all the crap getting into the shoes where missing, and i now had to pull the emergency release cable to get the handbrake off. Of course when you do that you then have to re latch the cable, as well as getting the shoes off and cleaned/greased - there began my second d3 DIY job which was just as successful... Ups and downs but you cant beat these trucks.
    Pick up the tools and get stuck in. Be good to see you take yours offroad (then fix it when you break it)..

      @WeAreBigKids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching.
      I've had my D3 almost five years now and the list of things to fix is growing, despite my best efforts. The idea of taking mine off road just seems like an impossible dream at the moment. My next tool box effort will be finding my electrical problem - Which started as "Rear Parking Sensors Shorted to Ground" and has become tailgate door opens itself, subwoofer shorted, front parking sensors shorted to ground and a slow battery drain.
      I have filmed fixing a sagging suspension corner / air leak, but not sure whether to edit that and upload it as there's no humour.

    Must admit, when I saw that the film was 43 minutes long, I thought I'd just skip through, but I watched and enjoyed every moment. Again, all credit to you. Your graphics/animation skills are impressive, too. No doubt you had to edit for bad language? I certainly would have.
    You are more patient then me, as I'd have taken a hammer to it. I did spot that you were tightening that bolt, but confess that I've done the same in the past, and I suspect many have if truth be known.
    I think a number of key points come out of endeavors such as this ... 1. It is never as easy as it should (or you think it should) be. 2. Rust is a true enemy. 3. Car designers sometimes seem to want to make these jobs as difficult as possible by leaving little room to work in. 4. Rarely do we have all the necessary tools when we first start a job. 5. It nearly always takes longer than anticipated.
    Perhaps treat your self to an angle grinder!
    Although it can seem like misery when halfway through this type of job, the feeling of achievement at the end is usually worth it. You are an inspiration my friend.
    Now, I'm looking forward to seeing you tackle the glow plugs. It's a job that I've been thinking of doing, but I hear they really are a nightmare and typically break.
    Carry on the good work.
