  • Remember the badly worn rear tire in our last episode? In this video we show how to do a full wheel alignment on our Land Rover Discovery 3. The procedure also works on the LR4. It is not as easy as we make it look like in the video on such a heavy truck. Expect this to be a one to two day job.
    We also created a easy to use Excel tie adjustment chart for download. See link below. Use this at your own risk.
    Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

    OMG
    I did a complete alignment myself on my 2005 LR3 with a professional John Bean rig while I was working at a repair shop. Needless to say it was a major pain in the ass to get everything within factory spec.
    What you did with that guetto rig setup is just amazing!!

    I have to finally comment something after watching about 70 of your videos. I absolutely love your content! You make a great team. So much fun watching you bicker a bit. I love Vera’s comment in another video “Christian isn’t funny yet. I’ll have to come back later. “ And it took me until this video to understand what LR in your channel name means. Yes I own a Tesla and no Land Rover ;) Thanks for your videos and hello from Sweden!

    D3s had a misalignment on the rear axle from the factory. Until they get a proper alignment, they all wear the rear tyres like this.
    You should do the alignment at the most usual weight you drive at, the LR advised loading weight is a compromise for all the conditions they expect. I'm sure they don't expect a close to fully loaded all up weight all the time like I run. I suspect Vera's D3 is well up on weight now with all the extras and kit you carry.

  • @NathanNostaw

    Normally i find these videos are focused on the average disco owner and are aimed at saving money, but the recomendation to have a full tank is just crazy.
    I just filled ours this morning and think I may need to take out a secnond mortage. $350 Aus on diesel and I haven't even bought the pvc conduit yet. :)

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that is excactly the reason why I did not get diesel, too expensive. Christian said we don't have time tomorrow to do the job, so I should wait to get diesel 🙄😅. But on the day we actually did do the alignment, the tank was full and I spend 152€ (1€=1.52 Aus$). 😳🙋‍♀️Vera

    Very, very, impressive engineering.
    Be careful when repositioning an angle-finder, though.
    You'll often find that they give a slightly different reading after repositioning.
    For example, if you measure a surface that has an angle of 5°, it might read +5° in one direction and -4.7° when facing the opposite way.
    It's always best to set a "datum" surface and take all other readings relative to it, with the angle-finder in the same orientation.
    Also, fun fact: digital angle-finders (and digital devices of most kinds) can often have a built-in inaccuracy of 0.1 as a result of how the A/D converter circuitry works.
    They'll count "...+0.2, +0.1, 0.0, -0.0, -0.1, -0.2..." etc.
    The thing where they count "zero" and then ALSO "negative zero" means an inaccuracy of 0.1 is introduced whenever you transition between positive and negative values.
    This is most often seen with digital thermometers but it also happens with other digital measuring devices.
    Usually this stuff wouldn't be a big deal but it might be a problem when measuring small angles such as suspension geometry.
    I used to work in a NAMAS instrument calibration lab' and we had to deal with this stuff all the time.

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      👍We did each procedure about 5 to 7 times. I was going nuts. But it's the best we could do with such a heavy vehicle. This video was shoot over 4 days, because we repeated the measurements so often, cut down to a 30 min video. 🙋‍♀️Vera

    I have been using my Gap tool to set the suspension on my L322 as low as possible (my mother broke her arm while trying to get in and ended up falling out) so now it goes as low as possible so I can help her get in for hospital visits. I also lowered the seat base.

    For example have a look at your D3 air-intake for the interior vehicle when the hard-plastic lip of the outside frontcover at the bottom of the windshield fails and rainwater flows benath it. Costs of hundreds when it fails, fixing with 1 Eur or less before it fails.

  • @robpeabo509
    @robpeabo509 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Vera, the steel in a radial tyre is called "Steel Belts". They are steel cord plies. The catch cry in advertisements when they were introduced was "Steel Belted Radial Tyres" to reinforce the fact they were better than "Rag" tyres. Prior to radial tyres we had Bias Tyres, these had no steel belts. They were also called "Rags" because they had nylon or cotton cord plies.
    That was a detailed step by step for the DYI'er Christian & Vera. How you did it was how the old timers pretty much did it before wheel alignment machines were developed. Also, the method used is very, very accurate. It just took much longer than the alignment machines.
    Congratulations on your 100'th video and reaching 20,000 subscribers. You subscriber count should increase exponentially as more people spread the good word and/or TH-cam use their analytics/logarithms to promote your channel to others.

    Congrats on the 100th episode. This video reminds me I need to sort the right rear camber on my D3. I can see with my eye that its got too much negative camber. I also done the string method when I replaced the rear toe links - I'm sure you'll have someone whinging that its not accurate etc... But its a method that's good enough for practically every race team on the planet so that's gotta tell you something

    • @Vera_and_Christian

      Here in Germany, the local tireshops do not do that kind of work. They only change tires. But we do support them more than others with 4 to 6 new tires each year. Most people only go there to have the tires changed from winter to summer, or the other way around. It is a big hassle to get a qualified shop to do an alignment.

    I use a Gunson trackace for toe , cheep chinese camber tool & digital protractor....
    Great video guys and see you next Sunday

      @@Vera_and_Christian ofcourse Toyota pickup drivers don't know what Wheel alignment is , you need to tell them that when the back wheels are in the fast lane , and your front wheels are in the slow lane , that a hammer wont fix it & an alignment is needed lol

    I was waiting for your video on this topic since my Disco 3 failed on inner tyre wear last August.
    This resulted in the premature replacement of my Goodyear Wrangler tyres at a cost of 220 euros *each*
    I found it very difficult to find a wheel alignment shop in Ireland that would align toe as well as _camber_ on a Discovery 3. They all stated that the _camber_ adjustment was a specialist job.
    Seems _toe_ adjustment is much more easier and quicker to adjust.
    I might try aligning the camber after watching your video.
    Very thorough video as always. Thanks.

      @Vera_and_Christian  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should remove the wheels and do a rough adjustment after the first inspection. Adjusting the camber bolts with the vehicle weight on is tricky and was painful. Christian

    Enjoy the vids, noticed some wear on my D4 tyres so thought I would revisit this one. Was thinking if the iphone level/protractor would be accurate enough? Would be an interesting bench test against the other two if you have a iphone handy🤔

    So cool! Loved this. I did this some time ago BUT watching this:
    1) my string was too thick
    2) I didn't account for different axle widths
    3) I set it all 0°
    4) I didn't bother with caster or camber...
    ... And I had just fitted 4 new tires!
    So I guess I'll be needing tyres sooner than I thought 😭😭😭

    Firstly congratulations on making it to 20k subscribers and the 100th episode. Next I wonder why Germans make everything complicated - in Australia we buy a fishing licence online. All the government needs from us is the payment! This was an interesting video but I think I will continue to get my alignment done by the dealer. It does not cost very much and much less effort on my part. Nonetheless full marks for all the research and showing the process. Looking forward to next Sunday. Good to see the refurbishment of the trailer, I thought it was in poor shape when you were collecting the firewood a few episodes back.

      I have a German hunting license as well. Since it's a de facto firearms permit in a country with tight gun control, that's a bigger deal ... it's a 10-month commitment and a really tough series of written, verbal, and practical shooting/gun handling tests. You then need a full police background check and ongoing clean record (even speeding tickets) to maintain it.

      Vera indeed studied a lot for her fishing license. It was some serious work. It takes some serious dedication to become a fisher over here. She goes fishing with our son Robin and I am not allowed to pull one out. Christian

    I was going to replace bushings and didn't think that would that much of trouble to align wheel. At least, I know that those at workshop who neither check manuals, nor do any precision with analogue stuff, is not worth of spending money.
