    Hey everyone!
The 2020 season seems like blur at this point, but so much happened despite it lasting only 60 games. One of the biggest storylines was the St. Louis Cardinals' season. They dealt with the brunt of the pandemic more than any other team in the league, but they somehow pulled off the impossible. Then in 2021, they did it again...

@@decker528 he was a very good 2-strike hitter for a couple years, but that’s not exactly the litmus test for being a contact hitter. I think of a contact hitter as someone who can reliably hit any good pitch that’s thrown over the plate and Matt has always struggled to hit a good high fastball.

The Cardinals didn't actually need any offensive upgrades at last season's trade deadline. The offensive stats at that point were only down due to previous injuries to O'Neill and Bader (with a terrible bench needing to fill in) and a season long slump by DeJong, who by that point had been replaced as the starting shortstop by the surprisingly solid offense (while being at least his equal defensively) of Edmundo Sosa.

As a long term cards fan, I want us to come back full force in 22, and I truly believe this'll be a year to remmeber. I believe molina and waino will have something to prove this season as a going away present for the fans and come in full force. They'll be gold glove winners for their positions and waino will come out to win a cy young award. We're going away with 6 gold glove awards, 3 silver sluggers, 2 homerun derby finalist, plus a world series win. We have the best 3rd basemen in the league, the best left fielder, a top 3 1st basemen, a top 10 center fielder, catcher, and 2nd basemen. Maybe Carlson will break out and show us what a rookie of the year contender will do, and Sosa will show us he deserves to be at short stop. This team is stacked defensively and 3 players are top 20 hitters. If our pitching staff can keep their heads on straight and pitch like everyone knows they can, I belive this year will be a no contest win for the cards. Our only competition is the dodgers. But they'll have their hands full with us, no doubt.

as a cardinals fan, I watch this and it makes me happy but its almost a smoke screen of what the actual season was.
I believe that the 2019-2021 cardinals had no business being in the playoffs because of how horrible they were. they were ranked at the bottom of all hitting and pitching stats in those years. honestly in 2020 they had expanded playoff brackets to thank for getting in and then in 2021 they had a HORRIBLE collapse by the Padres and Reds to thank for them getting in. I love the 17 game winning streak but they weren't playing any great teams except for the brewers (twice if I remember correctly). Of course it is incredibly hard to win 17 games in a row and I'm not taking anything away from that but it wasn't like they played top tier teams. when they finally did face a top tier team like the dodgers, they were basically shut out (they got a run off of a mishap by the dodgers. the bats were quiet).

(Ranking strictly out of the NL due to the lack of DH in 2019 and 2021)
      2019
Runs/Game: 10th in the NL out of 15
      Runs Against/Game: 2nd out of 15
      2020
      R/G: 24th out of 30
      RA/G: 6th out of 30
      2021
R/G: 10th in the NL out of 15
      RA/G: 6th out of 15
You don't know what you're talking about! The Cardinals had great pitching in 2019-20 to make up for disappointing offenses.
As for 2021, the team that pulled off that hot streak in September was very different from the one that floundered in June: the offense was completely healthy and stabilized, the bullpen had been almost entirely rebuilt with much better options, and the starting rotation, well, the patches provided by Lester and Happ were holding to a decent degree while Mikolas finally returned to make a few decent starts.

That's just what St. Louis sports teams do. 1999: The Rams, whose '90s constitute one of the worst decades in sports history, lose star QB Trent Green to injury and are forced to start Kurt Warner, who comes out of nowhere to lead the Greatest Show on Turf to a Super Bowl championship. 2011: In a do-or-die last dance for manager Tony La Russa and star first baseman Albert Pujols (yes, I know the Cards just re-signed him), the Redbirds sit 10 games back of a wild card spot near the end of August, and one of the greatest Septembers on record culminates in an all-time classic World Series where the Rangers are a strike away from winning their first championship TWICE and ultimately concede. 2019: The Blues fire Mike Yeo partway through the season, and a last-place position at the beginning of January forces interim coach Craig Berube to lean on rookie goalie Jordan Binnington and acquisition Ryan O'Reilly, who promptly reverse the tumble via a franchise-record 11-game winning streak and land the Note in the playoffs, where they dispatch three bitter rivals en route to a revenge series against the Bruins 50 years in the making where they ultimately emerge victorious for the first time ever. If a St. Louis team is successful all the way through a season, rest assured they won't go far in the playoffs.

There is something to be said about the importance of confidence in baseball. Winning teams have managed to get success out of unexpected sources for a long time because playing on a team used to winning makes that player believe they will succeed. The Cardinals getting significant production out of a guy like Aaron Miles for a few years in the mid 2000s immediately comes to mind as a great example of this.

SportStorm, one of the few people on youtube who doesn't think the 2020 season was illegitimate. Most of the people that think that would say that no one tried in 2020 and the season was too short to have legitimately good teams in the postseason.

great video but you overlooked something
    STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
This god damn Cards team in 2021 (Brewers fan here, I hate the Cards), had to get through an absurd schedule compared to the Reds and Brewers to finish the season in September. When you look at the schedule where they stood at 71-69, they had to still play the Reds, a Mets desperate to stay in the race themselves, a Padres team that was collapsing as you mentioned, a Brewers team that eventually did win a division (BUT COULD'VE WON A LOT SOONER HAD THE CARDS LOST AT LEAST 1 GAME! DEAD SERIOUS! The Brewers could've won the NL Central within the 1st 2 weeks of September had the Reds Cards lost at least a couple games after the early September series), and the Rival cubs.
The Brewers had to play the Indians, got hiccup'd by Detroit, then all of a sudden struggled against the Cards, but eventually won the division while sweeping the Mets. The only true hard team we had was the Dodgers...
The Reds? the only hard teams they had were the White Sox and Dodgers, they were facing Pittsburgh and Washington for the vast majority of September after the Cards series.
The Reds would be the team to collapse. They entered the Cards series 75-67, in the driver's seat for a WC, and ended 83-79.
The Brewers going into the Reds/Cards series were 87-55, ended 95-67. Keep these records in mind.
It means the Brewers were at one point 15 games AHEAD of the Cards, which means the Brewers could've won the division with 15 games to spare. There were 22 games left for the Cards, the Brewers won the division by 5 games. *5*
That's how MIRACULOUS this run was for the Cardinals, they actually somehow had a chance to not only still make the playoffs (which they did, despite being below .500 in the 1st half!), but they ALMOST overtook my Brewers in September ALONE for the Division!
I HATE THE CARDINALS SO MUCH! Because you're right, it's not the 1st time they did this, and it wasn't in 2020
IT WAS 10 YEARS PRIOR! The Cards did the same thing! The Brewers won the division while everyone thought the Cards were down and out! The Cards would not only still make the playoffs, but BEAT the Brewers! On their way to win a World Series! I was PISSED!
Every time the Brewers are remotely successful, the Cards shut us down, just like they ALSO did in 1982!

The Cardinals would've made it through the wild card last year if Alex Reyes didn't attempt to hold the Dodgers off in the 9th. Reyes didn't close anything during that streak and that's why it happened. Someone else should've been put into that 9th inning.

They did this at least 3 times now in the last 11 years looking like they would miss the playoffs only to rally late in the season and make it. It's kind of becoming a superstition for the fans 2011 9.5 back of the wc finished a game up went on to win the ws then the last two years

Its the cardinals, I love them, but they are cardiac killer. They will probably look shell shocked by all star break, coach marmol get heat as new young coach. Then Tyler o Neill arenado, Goldschmidt and co will start playing like mvps and that will be that. Also real quick can we appreciate wainwright for what he is, despite his record in postseason he's generally phenomenal. Just rather unlucky.
