Idiopathic Head Tremors in Bulldogs

  • Dr. Lera talks about idiopathic head tremors with Elvis, a three-year-old English Bulldog.
Idiopathic head tremors are a series of repetitive, horizontally (“no” gesture) or vertically-directed (“yes”), involuntary muscle contractions involving the head and neck. A typical episode lasts about three minutes (yet may seem to last much longer as you are watching it!). Dogs remain fully conscious and aware during the episode, and when the episode ends, your dog should be completely unaffected. The tremors are benign - meaning the dog is not caused any pain or distress, and there are no short or long-term effects. (source: vetneurochesapeake.com)

Thank you so much. My healthy 8’year old English bulldog Zeus started having tremors at age 4 and gets them every so often. He seems to get them in the morning as he’s waking up. I have never had him on meds. I watched a TH-cam video years ago where this couple simply distracted the dog with something special they would only give when the tremors happened. For Zeus it’s whip cream. I start shaking that can and it’s pretty much over ! He LOVES just a dollop and his brain starts getting excited from the noise it makes coming out💛no freaking out but just stay calm as you talk to your dog like you normally would. You want them to stay calm🙏sprinkling kibble around on a towel or clean floor does the trick as well. Just so it’s distracting. Maybe a special toy only given at that time. For bullies I think food as they LOVE LOVE LOVE a food🤗

Omg! This just happened to my baby last night! I started crying! He will be 5 in a month and I started giving him some sardines recently only 2 times and I thought that’s why it may have happened! You do make me nervous saying it happens when they are younger, it’s never happened u til now, but reading others comments I see it does and can start happening at 4. Thanks in the comments too! So helpful! We need to distract him so he can snap out of it.

My newly adopted 2 year old lab/pit mix started having the same issue a couple weeks ago. Blood work came back normal and the exam didn’t produce any reason for the head shakes. Shakes have become fewer and less severe lately. It’s good to know that eventually she will grow out of it. Thank you for sharing this information. It definitely puts me at ease.

Thank you for this video. We got our 2 year old English Bulldog a few months ago due to rehoming. The previous owners told us about his tremors and, even with knowing they’ll happen, it still causes worry. This helps alleviate some of that. We’ve found that giving him an apple slice or two (no core) in the moment helps to immediately stop the tremors. Thanks!

We have a 6 year old Parti Poodle that just started with the head wobbling this morning.
She just sat there, looking like a Bobble Head.
She knew her name when called.
After a couple of minutes, she scratched herself then got up and trotted off.
I'm hoping it's nothing serious. She's my little baby. We've had her for almost the entire 6 years.
She's at the vet's now. They're taking her blood.

My English/ American Bulldog has been doing this on and off for 8 years now. After a lot of trial-and-error and different research although I'm not a veterinarian is that this is a muscle spasm issue. There are many different ways people have gotten their dogs too stop shaking. The best way I see is to give them something crunchy. Like a large Milk-Bone. I have peanut butter cookies in the house for the dogs. If I give him one he crunches on it and it immediately stops his idiopathic head tremor. Some people use peanut butter. I think the crunching engages the muscle and works like a charm every time.

    • @anakelly8956
      @anakelly8956 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I make homemade peanut-pumpkin 'cookies' for my babies.
But, we want to make sure our Kairi doesn't have anything serious.
She just started the bobble head move this morning.
Lasted around 2 minutes. Then she scratched herself and trotted off.
It happens when she sits down.

This video was super timely. Our 6 month old bully just had what we think was one of these. She’s had a bit of a rough 2 weeks. She was Spayed 2 weeks ago, and has been battling an ulcerated cornea the past week. So 3 vet visits and many eye drops for her. She was the most playful today than she’s been the past two weeks. This evening as she was getting ready to settle down she started with the head shaking spasm. It would stop if we called her name or distracted her, but then start back up. It lasted probably no more than 2 minutes off and on, and stopped altogether when she fell asleep. Such a scary thing to observe. We never experienced this with our first bully.

This sounds so similar to my bully he was neutered then battled a ulcerated cornea. And head tremors started. His has increased in duration. Sometimes 30 min or more. But he’s ok. Same thing when he settles down for the night. Or can happen anytime. It is scary to witness. Distraction seems to help. Someone told me to make sure he has protein like cheese. Not sure If that has helped. Hoping to get more answers this week. Other than those episodes he is good.

Mine started pacing and panting and growling the whole night..like she was looking for something around the house. I dont knw if thats related to the tremors? My 8 yo dog, a mixed breed half staffy terrier and a bull Arab mix has started having these in the last week, a couple of months ago x-rays showed he had 2 bad discs and arthritis at the top of his neck and it's thought the nerves are now reacting to that. He snaps out of it if I give him something to eat but only momentarily, if he's having an episode I let him ride it out now as I don't want him to put on weight and create more issues.

My English bulldog is ten and a half years old and just started getting these tremors last Tuesday. My concern is they were lasting as long as 8 hours being the longest and 4 hours being the shortest. They were also throughout the day and they always began the minute he woke up. Peanut butter, moving him to another room, going outside, treats did not stop them. At times when he tried to walk, the head tremors have been so severe that he would fall over or fall on his face. We have done an MRI and blood work and have ruled out most diseases. We are discussing what options of meds to try and will probably try some form of epileptic seizure meds to see if he gets any relief. It is sad to watch and I hope we can find a solution.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I have a 4.5 year old English Bulldog/Boxer mix (double whammy when it comes to the likelihood of having head tremors). He started having head tremors at about a year old and will get them randomly a few times a year. They typically are very mild and last less than a minute. We are seeing a specialist at the end of the month to rule out any underlying causes. He’s also having another issue that I’m wondering if it could be related to whatever is causing the head tremors. At night he will wake up, get out of bed, and begin frantically sniffing around the room. He seems not all there consciously while doing this, and then seems to not know how to jump back on the bed. I’ll have to turn the lights on, take him outside, etc, to snap him out of it. We did years of scent work so I don’t know if this is just like sleep walking? Or something neurological?

Hi. I have a 8 year old English and American bulldog mix. He started having tremors when he turned 4. Our vet said they were seizures and put him on phenobarbital. He still had a few tremors but not much after that. I stopped the phenobarbital because all the research I was doing said they were idiopathic tremors. Our vet said no. I can talk to my dog and he will eat, walk around. I don't believe they were seizures. He hasn't had one in about a year. He just had one and it was long. Nothing different from before just longer than normal. When he gets these, it really worries me. Is there anything else I can do for him? Thank you for your help.

Was it raw chicken? I gave my bully a whole raw game hen which she's never had before and she started having them the next day. She's never had raw hen otherwise! I'm freaking out because I don't know what else could have caused this.

My 5 month old female English Bulldog, at the time head tremors began she was 12 weeks old when we had to visit a new vets office. She does it now every time there is too much stimulation going on as well as being tired. She will get grumpy and hide under our kitchen table and the head tremors will begin. I will have to lay on the floor with her and let her know it’s ok, give her kisses and about 1 minute later the head tremors stop. She has them almost every night...

My intact female French Bulldog, 17 months started having head tremors yesterday, she had two that lasted about 5 seconds, and then overnight she had a 4 more short episodes. She seems totally fine otherwise. The only difference in her life is that 3 days ago I had bought a potted hyacinth which is in the house until spring and is very fragrant. Its been kept up high and out of reach of my dogs. We have since removed the plant from the home to see if the toxins in the air from the plant may be the cause.

Apply a bag of ice to its head between the eyes and it should go away in about 10 seconds

I know it is not related to the tremors but please don’t keep your dogs this obese. His joints will give up a lot faster and it also does not help his breathing as he has to carry around so much weight. If your dog looks like this, please put it on a diet and up the exercise.

My Female English bulldog (ITSA) just started doing the tremors and of course Daddy worried about his little Girl who now is 11 years old. Yeah if there is a pet version of CBD im interested.
If your wondering about her name ITSA, it is short for ITSAPHATGIRL.
