  • Dr. Lera talks about immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) with Maddie, a six-year-old Golden Doodle.
    Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a disorder that can lead to easy or excessive bruising and bleeding. The bleeding results from unusually low levels of platelets - the cells that help blood clot.

    Thank you so much for this. My sweet dog daphne is in the hospital with this currently. I haven’t slept in days so worried about her. I’m glad to hear there’s a fairly good prognosis. Her platelet levels were at 1,000 as the low so Which sounds terrible. I hope this poor pup was able to get back to her normal self and be with her family just like I’m praying for my Daphne.

    My dog has been at the pet ER for 3 days now. Pleural effusion in the lungs, now mild, may not need to chest tap. Low red blood cell count, no platelets after transfusion but we’re about to start an IVIG treatment. The little guy has a great appetite though and we may ween him off oxygen later. He’s being so strong right now and we hope he responds to the IVIG so we can finally take him home. Wish there were more videos on ITP as warning signs can be easy to miss.

      How is your dog doing now? My shi tzu was diagnosed with itp yesterday

    • @erickruger8028
      @erickruger8028 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@choumicha37 I'm truly sorry to hear about your shi tzu's recent diagnosis of ITP. I know how shocking the diagnosis can be. However, I want to share some positive news with you. The IVIG treatment for my own dog was remarkably successful in treating ITP. After the treatment, my dog's platelet count started to improve, and in the latest test, it showed around 300k platelets - a really encouraging result.
      While this is great, I do want to emphasize that it can be incredibly expensive and highly recommend checking with your insurance for coverage. We used Trupanion and they were super helpful
      Currently, my dog is still on a 1mL dosage of steroids twice a day. Our hope is to gradually taper him off, but there is a possibility that he may require some level of steroid dosage indefinitely. It's important to be aware that immunosuppressant medications come with an increased risk of infections and illnesses, so taking necessary precautions is vital, especially if your dog is a puppy and hasnt completed their distemper and parvo regimine.
      Despite these challenges, it's heartwarming to see how happy and content our little guy is, he's thankfully blissfully unaware of his condition. While the initial diagnosis is incredibly frightening, please remember that over time, the situation does become more manageable.
      I really hope everything works out, and please dont hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions.

      @@erickruger8028Thank you so much for your reply,i live in The Netherlands and will check what ivig treatment is and the medication you've mentioned.Today i went back to the vet hospital with Mowgli and they started treatment on thursday on prednisolone and his platelet count on saturday was 0 and now 27.He is now on 20 mg prednisolone per day and a med that protects his stomache and yes i am still in a shock as i didnt see this coming.At first my vet thought of rat poison but after having his blood checked at the vet hospital they know it is immune related.It's a really shitty diagnosis and still coming to terms on how to deal with it.😢

    • @erickruger8028
      @erickruger8028 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@choumicha37 Of course, its the least I can do. Our pets are family and pet parents should stick together. I'm happy to hear they diangosed early, that is so important. The first couple weeks of treatment is so scary, my gf and I must have cried every day just worrying. If I could go back in time, I would tell past me to not forget to take care of myself too. Our little guy had a lot of hills and valleys- for the first few days he did not produce at all, completely devastating news.. But after a couple more days they hand counted 14 and we cautiously celebrated, after a week the machine had counted just over 1k. You've a huge supporter here in the US, me and my family are wishing you and Mowgli tons of strength and good fortune through this. 💛

    My 3 year old rottweiler just got diagnosed with ITP Thursday. they kept her all day thursday and over night gave her 2 injections while there. Her platelets were 27,000 and vet seemed surprised she still with us and told us we could still lost her anyday and to be prepared but we picked her up and brought her home yesterday and started her predinsone treatment today she will take 2 pills twice a day for 3 weeks then we go back and get blood work and will adjust her meds. I feel like we aren't sure if she will pull through or not. her hemoglobin was low at 2.5 and platelets were 27,000. Trying to stay hopeful she will pull through. Its been tough getting her eat we got her boiled chicken and turkey she ate some yesterday evening but its been struggle get her to eat for me this morning. Thank you for this video. It was encouraging this pets platelets for 0 makes me have lil more hope for my girl.

    Our Furr-kid Simon, was here one day and gone the Next, had NO idea He was Sick, A Vaccine brought it to light when he couldn't stop bleeding (he never had these issues before). After being told he just needed a few days in the hospital, turned to a phone call from the Doctor On Duty at 2:40 am asking if he can stop working on him. I felt Like I was just hit by a Semi, this wasn't supposed to Happen, I wasn't supposed to tell the Doctor to Stop working on him, I couldn't, this is My Furr-Kid Simon J. & there was No way I was going to let them Stop. So the Vet on Duty ask my hubby if he can talk to me, So next thing you know he's trying to make me feel Guilty, telling me he was suffering & I had the Power to Stop his Pain so I make my Hubby do it. Not Sure WTH happened & Why the Doctor wanted to Quit working on him. But don't trust City Vets anymore.

    Hi! My 4 year old border collie is in the normal to low range of of white blood cell count. No bruising but is lethargic, and seems to be having trouble with his back hips.
    He had a steroid shot. 3 days later and the hip issue is becoming more prominent. Our very active dog is breaking our heart.

He gets infections last yr he got two uti’s Dr. Gave him antibiotics, so now he got an infection again Dr 👩‍⚕️ said is a penis infection and his plackets extremely low that she couldn’t count them he’s bruised very bad around his penis cuz they try to get a urine sample and also in his neck both sides it broke my heart it looks horrible and he’s in pain😓😢😰 every time he gets infection he’s plackets are low Dr 👨‍⚕️ never said anything about it and he was never bruised like this time
    Dr 👨‍⚕️ is waiting for the results for different blood test for ticks ..etc and gave him doxycycline and prednisone.
    My question is what can I do to help him get better like Is there any foods that can help him rise the plackets ? Or anything that I can do for my dog?

      There several medication that should be tried when initially trying to control your dogs condition. Predinisone is usually 1st. The other medications can include but are not limited to mycophenolate, cyclosporine , azathioprine. It is crucial that you work closely with your veterinarian while getting your dog's condition under control.

    I wonder if Maddie and all the other pets diagnosed with this were around their owners right after they got vaccinated for covid or were home sick with covid? Dogs lick faces, lick dishes of sick people that are in the dishwasher, drink out of the toilet…wonder if that’s where they’re all suddenly picking it up. I’ve never heard of dogs having this years ago.
