You know, somehow I do manage to hit that button and screw my setting up just walking around with it attached to a blackrapid strap. I will go to shoot and aperture or iso or something else will be all jacked up.. I ended up disabling it. The wheel command button is so easy to use, its only missed if doing focus pulls..

So basically, if you're into film making, go with the 70D? If you're into photo's go with the 6D?

    • @polmacdhomhnaill3021
      @polmacdhomhnaill3021 5 ปีที่แล้ว

JKPOrigins no the 6D is only good for showing pretty colours in a photo, if those pretty colours move at all you’ve missed the shot waiting for the 6D to find the focus according to video. Also if there is a focus issue with 6D you can’t adjust it as you can with the 70D in the settings. One stop is nothing in low light when you need to shoot at 15000 iso. 6D is pretty much useless over the 70D unless it’s your first camera to get pretty colours or you keep it on a tripod.

Awesome comparison Toby! I loved your 70D videos, they made me buy it... and i couldn't be happier! Here some considerations... I used both cameras, I bought a 70D in first place because of the slightly cheaper price and because i already had some ef-s glass so i didnt want to throw that away with a 6D, but actually got a 6D borrowed from a friend. I gotta admit that the 6D has a cool image quality, the full frame body is pretty good for landscapes, but if you want my opinion the best camera is the 70D. It is faster, i missed the screen soooooo much when using the 6D, it has probably the smartest autofocus i've ever seen. The AF issue on the 70D is not that deal for me, i actually made some tests but seriously, nothing to really care about for me. The low light performance of the 6D is ofc better, but the 70D has probably the best crop sensor, noise reduction is not top notch but you have some awesome raws you can process later. The lens factor is to consider as well. I'm an indie videomaker and i love to capture stills... as a consequence i needed that versatily of the body, and all the glass i needed for a cheap price. Consclusions:
70D: videomaking, walkaround, sports, wildlife and a better general purpose camera as well.
6D: landscape, stills only, prepared tripod shots and portraits.

6d does not have enough focus points and only the center point is cross-type. The 70d has 19 all cross-type AF points and better autofocus in low light. I own both. If I could only have one it would be the 70d.

Thanks so much for the review. I just bought the 70D and have been very happy with it, but several friends keep telling me about how great the 6D is. For me, the 70D fits in better with my needs of video and photos, and also into my budget. The focusing for video is amazing. You can get pull focus just by touching the screen.

I own the 6D. It's the king of lowlight from canon. I love it since I do most of my shooting in low light settings. I think the only thing you didn't mention was the sensitivity of the autofocus in the dark, which I don't think most people worry about but makes a difference. The 6D goes to -3 EV besting even the 5Dmark 3 at -2EV (center focus point ) and the 70D center focus point is rated at -.5EV. For those looking for lowlight performance the 6D is it :)
I enjoy your reviews! Keep them coming :)

I have a Canon 6D. There's a lot to both love, and also hate.
The construction is rather flimsy. But it's small and light weight. It has very few autofocus points.
The color is very pleasing and natural. It's inexpensive for a full frame camera. The L series lenses, which are supremely good, are also frightfully expensive. I got it mostly just because it's my first full frame camera.
But I also have a supreme quality Nikon DX format camera.

Thanks since I am considering a 70D. I really didn't consider the 6D but very happy you compared the two, You affirmed my decision. BTW - to those who say you are comparing apples and oranges, I would say yes, it isn't a straight comparison, but the difference between crop and full sensors isn't as obvious as the difference between an apple and an orange.

I owe70D. I was considering 70D and 6D to buy some time. I bought 70D for focusing, filming, articulating screen and latest technology. The size of the frame DOES NOT matter comparing those two. Anyway, it is no point in upgrading to full frame in my case as 70D covers all my demands .

From iso.org: "Because 'International Organization for Standardization' would have different acronyms in different languages (IOS in English, OIN in French for Organisation internationale de normalisation), our founders decided to give it the short form ISO. ISO is derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal. Whatever the country, whatever the language, we are always ISO.
"It's a word 'iso', not initials 'I-S-O'. Think isometric or isosceles.

  • @Sigsac1

Thanks for this vid Toby! These are the two cameras I'm considering (the 6D and 70D)! I had an idea for a book, and a publisher agreed to publish. Now I need to shoot the pics (my old point & shot just doesn't cut it.) So I really don't need video, GPS, WIFI...just clarity and increased pixels for printing my photos in a book. The photos are going to be things to do on vacation - meaning pics of museums, water activities, inside of shops, street scenes, landscapes, etc. And cost is very much a consideration. So, would I be satisfied with the less expensive 70D? I'm concerned about the full frame when shooting a skyline pic for instance. Also, I've found an import 6D. Much less expensive. Should I consider this? Any comment would help! Thanks!

  • @punishmentforall
    @punishmentforall 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks, this is an excellent comparison. Currently (as of May 2015) there's a ~$400 price difference between the 6D and 70D. I don't think I'd miss the higher shutter speed of the 70D, but the articulating touch screen and better focusing system would be a loss. But my biggest concern is low light, and the 6D is very good (even compared with 5D MKII).

    Hi Toby,
    Very informative review. Thanks !
I have a question for you.
My 70D has the central focus point issue.
I am looking for a nes lens. I want it as sharp as possible even though I got this issue and it is really a bugger for me. I am leaning toward the 40mm f/2.8 IS STV or 50mm f/1.4.
Having this issue, which one will give me the best sharpness all open?

The 1/180 sync limit is because it's full frame or so I was told by a Canon rep... Don't know what's up with the shutter speed limit of 1/4000 though. But as a Fashion/glam shooter the 6D quality is what I need since I'm not shooting sports and such.

    Hello Sir,
My name is Basim. I have watching and following all the videos you have been posting on youtube. I want you please help me and give me your expert advice on which camera should I buy. This will be my first camera ever and I want to get the best bang for the buck because I am poor guy and certainly cannot experiment with things. it will be like my first and last purchase.
The main purpose for my camera is portraiture. I want to get the exteme creamy bokeh and shallow depth of field. My choice would have been very easy if I wouldnt have seen tony northups video that you have to multiply aperture with crop factor.
My heart is going for Sony a6300 with 50mm f1.8 lens. Which is a crop sensor and I am afraid of not getting that creamy bokeh. I have fallen in love with this camera It is light small compact. Have almost everything (except touchscreen and FF sensor) and the main drawback is expensive and minimun choice of lens.
    Or
Canon 6d body and buy 85mm f1.4 sigma ex dg lens. I know it will produce the image quality i want. But it doesnt have 4k and very old camera too few autofocus points. Main advantage is lens are cheap and easy to get which one should I buy. Thankyou

    Awesome video as always.
    I owned a 6D, and I got my new 70D about a month.
    70D really embarrassed 6D.
Better image quality really don’t mean better picture.
70D‘s AF and FPS are key to have better moment.
6D only beats 70D when it comes to landscape.
Shooting with 70D is MORE COMFORTABLE when shooting anything that moves.
    6D VS 70D is same as D600 VS D7100.
I Recommend getting a 70D or D7100,and use the money on lens.
And Full Frame lens does have better quality wide open on 70D then 6D.

Great Video! I switched from a T4i to a 6D a few months ago. Every point Toby made is spot on IMO. I do mostly Landscape Photos along with Portraits. The 6D is outstanding in low light. My t4i was way faster in FPS and had the Cross Type Focus Points, but that hasn't hindered my Shots. I missed the Vari-Angle Screen of the T4i, and was hoping the Wi-Fi would be a bit more user friendly. As Toby mentioned, DSLR Controller is much better than EOS App. DSLR Controller is worth the $8.00 I paid for it. I bought a Cable because of connectivity issues of Wi-Fi. (Just a bit of a pain.)The Images with my Tamron SP 90mm Macro, and 24-105mm L, and "Nifty 50mm" are what I was hoping for in an upgrade to a Full Frame Sensor. I got my Camera for just under $1600.00 on Amazon (Body Only). It was not Gray Market.

Then why do most wildlife shooters for Nat. Geo shoot a cropped sensor Nikon D500 or Canon 7D? Professional shooters would differ with your conclusion. Why is "FF" such a joke next to medium format film? If you want super high-quality landscape images, medium format film still kills it.

I have the 70d and have been wanting to do more landscape so was considering a 24 or 28mm lens (as asked in another of your videos). But now I'm thinking of getting the 6d for the full frame. My main long lenses (70-200 L and 70-300 L) and my primes can be used on 6d but would need a 24-105 kit lens too.

    Hello,
My name is Jett, i'm looking to buy a new camera. When i was younger i got into photography, i kinda just jumped into it without any research. I bought a Nikon D3000 without knowing anything.
A few years later after being stuck with that camera, I'm looking to buy a new one. The class I'm taking prefers canons, and from what i can tell I would like to buy a canon too.
I'm planning to take photography seriously. I'm going into college and plan to do something with photography. I plan to do a lot of traveling, and Ive been doing research and there are so so many choices I'm kinda overwhelmed. I want a camera thats good for traveling, and taking pictures of mountains and landscapes, i also want the camera to be good at capturing like not necessarily "sports" but you know, like maybe pictures of my travel companion running through a field or splashing around in the ocean, a geyser exploding, the campfire on a beach, or my dog chasing after a stick.
I like the thought of having GPS and wifi connect ability but its not necessarily a requirement.
Ive read that full frame sensor cameras are great for things like landscape photography but idk where it would lack? Or like if you can get just a outstanding landscape pictures with a crop sensor?
I also would like the camera to have the video recording option. Though I will mainly use the camera for photography.
Ive been looking at the Canon 6d and 70d and also the EOS 5D Mark iii.
The 5d is very expensive and idk if id need that or if i could accomplish what i want to accomplish on the 70d or 6d.

I put it by priority: 70D- video/photo, 6D- photo/video. Good to have both (identical function layout inside out). Only problem remaining - both have this pesky moire problem. But if you can live with that - you're King of the top castle.

I use 5D Mark-3 from the times it was just issued .. i love my camera BUT i would love to have something that has more accurate FOCUS when shooting a video! the 70D seems just perfect for that - tracking the objects easily. but what is bothering me a littile bit is Cropped sensor.. i hope i will not see a lot of a difference in video quality? can anyone share your experiense with 70D ? cause i'm about to buy one.

i had a canon 550d with a 18-55 and 50mm 1.8 lens. I had used it almost for 5 years. unfortunately my house got burgled and those guys took away my entire camera bag. Now i am researching to upgrade and am seriously considering a full frame canon. I have shortlisted canon 6D with 24-70 f4 lens. 5d mark 3 is out of my budget. I found a lot of constraints in the last 1 year or so with my 550D with respect to field of view maybe the lens could have been upgraded. do you think this will help me with landscape as well as portrait photography than investing in 70D plus a lens other thank kit lens. i also in the long term will invest in a prime L lens. For sure will insure all my camera equipment this time.

Hi there Toby! I got a question about 70D. Does it have all manual option in video mode? I am asking cause thats one of the thing I like with full frame ( I have a 6D). I can get my own balance between ISO, Shutterspeed adn aparteure. Now can I get that as well with 70D or is it all automatic? An important issue to mention when comparing video capability?

Well by reading the comments and your advice taken, I think I have made once again a mistake in my purchase. I own the 70d already and coming from a 1000d it feels like driving a really nice limousine, but alas the full frame is what I have always wanted to own. Though there is around 700US$ price difference in the price here in Denmark where I live and it is not almost the same price as the 70d. Well anyhow at least I have nice L lenses to go with it but still maybe should have saved up for a full frame.... :(

Thank you for your great review. You are probably the most FAIR assessor of both cameras. Most everyone else is biased based on their favorites- and certainly, when you get the next latest and the greatest, reviewers tend to poop on the less favored and less current. Would you say these are 2 totally different animals altogether. It makes sense that a true professional camera won't have that dinky cheezo flash attached to the 70d that sucks anyway.

I only need 1 good focus point right in the middle like a film camera. I hate touch screen anything. A pivoting screen can be useful. If you need that fast of a shutter, why not shoot video? The C sensor will have smaller sharper pixels (assuming the same number as is with these 2 cameras) and the full sensor is much better at low light with the larger pixels. Pick your poison as they say. I love the low light ability of the 6D and it works with my high end film lenses.

I have both and I find the 6D is better for video. I just find the video looks better in raw then the 70D and is also better then my 5D but that’s my opinion but if you want the best in video from a canon you go for a 1DC they are about $15k new or about $7k second hand.

I have to say the OMD Em1 is very tempting - lots of great quality in that small package. Sony a7 is also very nifty but you have to deal with the shifting sands of sony and a much smaller ecosystem. D7100 and 70D are very good but bigger and heavier with bigger lenses.

The counter argument is pro bodies really need to be built tough and an articulated screen could get knocked off - I do think we will see a full frame with articulated screen from Canon or Nikon soon but it will be more 6D like and less of the high end pro.

Eric C I do like the idea of moving up to the 6D for you. In the lower light situations that you often encounter at weddings, receptions especially they full frame low light performance of the 6D will be very welcome. Continue to use your 50mm f/1.4 and pick up the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (fantastic lens for the money)

Interesting video. The lighting range looked huge and extremely challenging. Think you need to apply compensation: make indoor shots much lighter as they were mostly dark and underexposed, conversely some outdoor shots were too bright and over-exposed. What the best ways to do that is I am not sure. But good luck with your video work. Sure you will get there in the end, Keep on going!

Toby - Just a comment: I'm leaning towards a 6D but heard that my Canon AF 70-200 mm lens will now not be as long as it used to with my cropped-sensor camera, it will be a true 70-200 mm. This feels like a loss to me as I do a lot of photography in stadiums or football fields where the zoom is essential. So still wondering whether to go with a 70D or a 6D. Question: How does the 7D (not 70D) compare to the 6D? Thanks in advance.

Better Detail ? ... should the Smaller APS - C Sensor Produce more detail because there - is more Pixel packed in the Smaller Sensor (Pixel Density) .... which is kinda equivalent to a 40 Megapixel Fullframe ?

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  9 ปีที่แล้ว

No it doesn't work that way. In some cases you get closer via the crop factor but when shooting equivalent focal lengths and you pixel peep, the full frame offers better detail.
