Man... you REALLY do a good job reviewing. I've watch atleast 10 other youtubers reviewing this camera and your review... by far... is the most *clear and concise ... straight to the point ... no minced words*. I don't miss much and can clearly see you don't either. Impressive. I felt like you went straight to the heart of the camera from jump. Now I see why this has 46k+ views.
Cool. I have a few more 70D videos and have lots more planned. It really is an excellent camera. Happy to answer questions now or when you get your hands on it. Enjoy!
For a beginner to video it means very little - it has nothing to do with audio(mostly) and just means you cannot hook up an external hard drive device dedicated to capturing video direct to the device - bypassing the SD card. You do have a mic in port that you can connect a variety of audio recorders to avoid syncing in post. You can also record separately. Happy to chat about this more.
In my recent video assisting I have been shooting with C100 - still haven't had a chance to carefully look at files but that is a big and specialized jump up from 70D or even 5DM3.
Someone else just contacted me and asked a similar question. They had just bought 6D and were wondering if they should spend the extra money on a 5DM3. I advised NO - keep the 6D and spend the savings on a nice lens (or two) and those lenses will move with you in the future. I am not sure if I will get a review done of the 6D anytime soon. I'd like to but would have to rent for at least a week which is pricey. Happy to chat about this with you more.
Tough call. You probably will be better off with a few more lenses(though I don't know what you have now) - 70D does offer faster burst rate and more professional controls - helpful is shooting sports but for general gigs the 650D can do just fine.
Consider Magic Lantern Software - it is custom firmware, not available for 70D yet but will be soon (probably) and would allow you to get around limit. Also offers loads of nifty features.
The 18-135 is very good for a kit lens and a great place to start. Consider adding a prime lens for your lower light shots. I have a whole video on those and I am happy to chat more. Would appreciate if you used my links under video to purchase. Thanks!
I'm a novice to DSLR. I had a 60D, but the 70D is superior in every respect. He is right, the AF in basic, SCN and Movie modes is faster, more accurate and reliable so far. Image quality was an improvement in clarity and contrast. LCD panel and an articulating touch screen is functionally important. 70D feels & handles well. If you are looking for used, this is a good one w/warranty.
I hear that but that applies to all of the DSLRS except for Sonys and the Panasonic - both of which aren't actually DSLRS. and they do make loupes/clip on devices for the viewfinders in these situations.
Depends on how you use the camera. Just walking around taking photos - probably not. But if you want a much more capable focusing system during video - yes. And depends on your long term photography goals.
don't have problems with any of the buttons except the wheel. Backbutton AF is awesome and you should, if you haven't already turn off AF for the shutter button and just go full BBF ;) Headphone jack would be soooo nice.
Thanks - I feel much better having solid real world use to share- I often discover things in weeks 3-4 that I hadn't run into in the first week or two of shooting/using.
I don't know ;) Leave me a message on my facebook page - tell me how you plan to use the camera, what you want to shoot, video or photo or both etc. And I can provide a recommendation.
it really means neither - it gives you slightly more fine tune editing control and supposedly better quality but the quality difference isn't something one would notice. I would think that green screen would work equally well in either setting.
I just checked on the C line again and I believe it's just the C500 that shoots in higher bit depths than 8. The 100 and 300 still use CODEC's that record at 8-bit (Canon XF and AVCHD). I could be wrong, but I believe that is correct.
I have a 70D and have learned so much from your videos. You do a great job explaining everything, thank you for making great videos, you have helped me immensely.
Hi, I have noticed a slight delay in displaying my 70d (video and photo live view). Is it normal that small delay?. I come from a t5i and did me the delay. You could tell me if it is normal 70d ?. Greetings!
Ahhh I see. Thanks for the reply. Great channel & reviews btw... You actually the cover the important stuff that matters to most people I think. Im heavily debating btwn the Canon 70d & Nikon D7100 right now for video work and stills. Mainly focussing on the video part of both cameras to decide as Im becoming more involved with video. Wish the 70D had a headphone jack & no moire/aliasing issues like it does.... biggest con's in the 70d column (& win for D7100) so far from what I have seen.
Live View seems to be the only way to get fairly sharp photos compared to viewfinder. However, I used Live View today while photographing an outdoor car show and all the images were fuzzy. The 70d is kind of hit and miss on focusing. Many people are having this problem.
Thank you for your review. Your earlier review, together with reviews from others on the video focusing on this camera, together with wifi capability, convinced me to go and get the 70D last year. No regrets here. Very happy with the camera.
Good review. I've started using vintage Pentax lenses via a PK adapter on my 70D. Amazing 3D quality and lovely bokeh / out of focus areas. They are cheap enough too - mine were my own from the early 1980s. Fully manual though so you might need a variable ND to 'adjust' the exposure for depth of field. The 70D is a great video DSLR. I find it a bit noisy compared to full frame.
Wow, quick reply! I was still watching the video, lol. Good to know, thanks! Did Canon stick with h.264 as the video CODEC or did they switch to something better? The problem with 8-bit video is that you don't get as clean a separation with chroma green as you would with 10-bit. Thanks again!
Coupling the WiFi with Shuttersnitch on iOS (not sure if it's on Android yet) and this thing is pretty sweet. This is especially great for event photography where you can't practically carry a laptop with you. You'll always have your phone with you, or maybe an iPad that's much easier to fit into your camera bag so you can throw them up there as soon as you take them then review them all when you get a moment, or just hand it to your assistant or friend or something and they can do that for you.
TalesOfWar Yes - and on Android I use DSLR Controller - offers similar functionality to Shuttersnitch and is very helpful. Using a rooted MiFi device I can also wirelessly control video :)
I enjoyed the review, the 70d looks like a good camera for prime focus astrophotography with my 130mm f5 reflector telescope. What Cannon product would you reccomend for astrophotograhy? Thanks Mike
Hi. last time i was shooting with my Canon 70d with the EF 40mm (Pancake), once the cam battery gone, i decided to use my old Canon 500D again with the 40mm Pancake lens, i was surprised once i got somehow nicer pictures than the ones i was having before using the 70d... Did i do something wrong while using the 70D+40mm? Is the 40mm pancake more suitable to the Canon 500d...? I really have the feeling im not getting the best of this cam since i bought it... Thanks for you help!!!
Hey Toby. I have a question for you. I currently have a Canon T3i, 3 lenses (50mm 1.8, 18-55mm kit and 75-300mm), a borrowed Gopro, 3 cheaper tripods, Zoom H1 and some DIY equipment. My sister has a wedding coming up in June and I plan on making a wedding video for her as a gift. I'm taking advantage of this opportunity to sharpen my portfolio and gather hands on experience with wedding videography. I have about $1500 to spend on a second camera. My question is - Canon 70d with 18-135mm or second T3i (if I can find one) / T5i body, and use the remaining money on other miscellaneous items? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks in advance!!
Spectacular review! Not a bad sweater either! Quick question, I'm in the market for a DSLR to record fitness workouts, food prep at home and vlogging! T3i or 70D? I'm leaning towards the 70D because I love the auto focus feature. I've seen videos filmed by the T3i and it seemed as if it was a tad bit difficult to focus. Just undecided and don't know if the 70D is worth the price. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you!
I thinking of get the 70D, but before I do... I wanted to know if there is a new canon DSLR coming out possibly full frame camera that will have the new AF sensor that the 70D has?
Thanks for the review Toby. I have been having fun with this camera. I have been viewing the images on my widescreen TV. However, the images do not fill up the whole screen (2 black side bars) even when I have already selected 16:9 aspect ratio on the camera. Hope you can help me out on this.
Hi Toby, I am kind of confused which DSLR camera to buy between Canon 70d or Nikon 7100. I am after both photography and video, filming small movies, travelling/sporting videos and photography. Please also recommend the lenses for the same with respect to camera(canon or Nikon).
Thanks for this review, Toby! :-) It seems that all the reviews on YT are positive to the 70D even if it's not the best in all aspects. So I just ordered one, most because of the focus and video features.
Im getting my 70D tomorrow.. Cant wait. What do you think about the Sigma 30mm 1.4,(gen 2) will that lens work for filming? Thank you for the best 70D review on youtube! It answers all my questions about the Canon 70D! Best regards/ Jimmy
Nice - Stay tuned for more 70D user guide videos coming this Spring. Sign up for my newsletter if you want to be notified when it is released digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/newsletter/
Kim - Thanks! Happy to answer any followup questions and you might want to watch Best Deal on the Canon 70D - $300 savings on Amazon some great savings on the 70D right now.
Good review. I suspect the 80D out next year will address some of the cons you described. I'm hanging off upgrading my 40D to see what they do with it.
Hi thank u for sharing important ideas. I got a canon eos70d last week. Could u pls tell me on how I can record video sound perfectly? I wanna make an indie film. Will shoot soon. Do I have to do sync video & audio after post production? Is it difficult? Your answered is appreciated. Thank u in advance.
What do you prefer? Canon or Nikon? Ive been a canon user and love my camera but at my work we use a Nikon so im just checking out everything this time before I upgrade.
hi Toby, i really like your in depth analysis and excellent reviews of dslrs cameras. i dont really like the bulk of dslrs and think that mirrorless cameras like sony nex 6 can create a paradigm shift by allowing more portability and providing similar quality and features as the dslrs and also on similar price points. i would really appreciate if you can provide your analysis on the image quality comparison and other trade-offs with sony nex 6 compared to dslrs like canon and nikon. if possible, a video comparison would really benefit me and help me decide. i am just an enthusiast who is learning photography and want to have the best image quality using the APS-C size sensors within 1000 bucks
70d looks good all around but would the mk3 be a better choice for taking great landscape pics. If I did that I can only buy one lens! Which one would you suggest for landscape . Thanks
I've seen all your videos for the 70D so far. I'll think I'll get one since I have 5-6 crop-sensor lens from my old 10D. Awesome channel, keep up the good work :)
Hi Toby, at about 5:55 you mention the higher bit rates for video. Does that mean higher bit depth for color so you can do better green screen compositing? Or is it just higher quality images? Thanks!
Once again a great job toby :) Today i read somewhere that Nikon has announced D5300 and the good news is anti aliasing filter has been taken off the camera n now its shoots at 1080p @ 50/60 fps... would love to hear your comments on it... cheers :)
Good Day Sir Toby. Im a nikon user and im about to upgrade my dslr.. Just wanna ask you if Which is really better for Wedding Photography? Nikon D7100 or Canon 70D? Im very confused of these two!CameraRec Toby
Now that it's 2017 and my budget doesn't allow me to go with a 80d should I stick with the t6s or move to the 70d? I only have a couple days to return it and get the 70d 😕
Great video Toby! I'm saving up for my 70d :D at the moment I'm borrowing a 600d from a friend and I'm already seeing problems with noise at ISOs 1600+ and the 1/4000s max shutter speed. Although Magic Lantern makes the camera much more feature rich and I would say that Magic Lantern could fix the problems with the 70d such as the non-clean HDMI out and no video recording in wifi mode
one more question..I know my older EF & EFS lenses will work on the new 70D but I don't want to forsake image quality to save $500. That said, I'm going to Australia and New Zealand in April so I want to make sure I have a good system for great photos
Remind me the older lenses you have? Some older lenses will do just fine but many of the newer lenses - even the cheap ones have improved optics and coatings which will increase image quality. Video focusing can also be negatively impacted by older, slower lenses. But yes they will all work.
just a quick question Toby, I have been watching number of videos and have finally decided 70D over D7100 Nikon, but was wondering how better is 70D over 7D, I am talking in terms of picture quality and HDR processing, also I am not a big fan of video recording, like I never do or will do video recording. In this case, what camera would you suggest if video recording is completely taken away from the comparison, 70D, 7D or Nikon D7100? Also I will never go beyond 400 ISO, so comparing low light performance above 800 or 1000 max doesn’t matter at all. Please do consider the cost factor too, would buying a 2nd hand 70D can be risky? Especially, considering the touch screen and battery life of the camera. I mean, how often is the touch screen malfunctions (not a big fan of smart phones) and the battery life deteriorates? Thanks Toby, I think I will wrap up my search completely after your reply.
I own the D7100 and I can tell you that the pictures it spits out are phenomenal. They are tack-sharp and there's a ton of dynamic range that's easy to pull out using something like Lightroom. The lack of the AA (OLPF) filter really allows it to take sharp, clear images. I have taken a couple of macro shots that left my jaw hanging, I wasn't even aware that pictures COULD be that sharp right out of the camera. I am in the opposite boat, though. I have switched almost exclusively to video, so the 70D's focusing system is REALLY appealing to me, even though the D7100 technically has better features as far as video goes. I think for video, the 70D is just too good to pass up, but if I was doing ONLY photography, I would definitely go for the D7100. Toby did a great D7100 vs 70D video that you can find on his channel here on youtube, MichaelTheMentor did another one. Both seemed to come to the conclusion that the 70D was the winner for video and the D7100 was better for photography and this seems to be the general consensus on the web, as well. I regularly push my D7100 to 4000 ISO without too much of an issue, so you wouldn't have anything at all to worry about below 1000. I shoot exclusively RAW though, so I can't speak as to the way the jpegs look. I shoot primarily macro, too and I love the D7100 for that type of photography. Never say never about video recording...if the bug bites you, you'll get hooked. ;) Best of luck in your decision.
You are correct about Moire. It is not simply a side effect of having a sharp image. It's generally caused by poor digital processing. Because 1080p images are about 2MP and most DSLR sensors are 16MP or more, that image has to be reduced in resolution for every frame of video (usually 25 or 30 times a second). Cameras that simply skip lines on the sensor only reading the ones they want, tend to suffer quite badly from Moire and Aliasing issues. Cameras that read a larger resolution image, and then mathematically scale the images down in their digital processing, tend to have little or no Moire (depending on the quality and types algorithms used).
Hi Toby, Great work.I have two issues with my 70D. 1. While shooting videos, it over heats. 2. The Video file, is not recorded as a single file instead, as multiple files, was shooting in RAW, I mean, not a 25 or 29 minute file. Please help, Thanks.
Very helpful. Thanks. Just got a 70D at Christmas to replace my 40D. The video seems intriguing but since I bought the body only, would you recommend a good external microphone $150-200 or a STM lens to get rid of the focusing noises? I'm pretty happy with my lenses now so the additional lens would not really complement what I have. 10-20 Sigma 3.5-5.6, 24-70L 2.L mk 1, 15-85 efs, 50 1.8, 70-200L f/4, 70-300 non L, 100-400L.
You can grab a zoom like the H4n and wire it with a long audio cord to avoid all lens noise www.amzn.com/B001QWBM62/?tag=emaildpr-20 - I have some tests that I shot but haven't carefully analyzed with a Rode mic mounted on the camera. I hope to get those up soon.
hi toby, i really like all the videos u post here, thats what excite me more to start to work with the canon 70d, but i got a simple question for u, whats the best lenses i can use for music video, when u shoot in africa most hight light and sunny days. thanks again.
Hi Camera Rec Toby, I was watching your review of the Canon 70D... I just bought it yesterday with the 18-135 STM lens. I was wondering if you'd answer a couple of questions... Firstly, the 18-135 lens seems to have no hard/soft stops in the focus ring... Is that normal for a STM lens, or have I received a faulty lens? Secondly, I can only manually focus when the camera is actually ON... Without power, the lens wont focus, which is also why I was wondering if the lens is faulty, or is this part of the new technology? Thirdly, in Movie mode, it seems the only option I have is either Continuos Autofocus, or Manual focus. it seems in continuous autofocus mode, I can't set it so that it only focuses when I touch the screen and have it focus. It either autofocuses completely on its own, or I have to turn off Servo Focus, in which case, not only does it stop autofocusing, but it also disables manual focus. In order to manually focus, i have to set the lens to manual focus, thus disabling autofocus completely. I guess what I am asking is that is there no way to selectively use autofocus by touching the screen, or manually overriding the autofocus? Or have I received a faulty set somehow? Thanks
Hi Lenny - The STM technology does mean the ring spins and spins. It also does mean that the camera needs to be on and sometimes, even with the camera on, you need to ½ press the shutter button to be able to manually focus. The trick for movie mode is to use back button focus - I really should do a tutorial on this - but you can turn off Servo and still press the button on the back - AF-ON to get focus. So all works as expected. Happy to answer more questions. --T
Hi Toby, I'm hoping you can give me a hand with some lens advice for the Canon 70D. I'm looking to purchase this camera to use for product clothing/model shoots so would like to get a lens that will work for this purpose. I also want to be able to do close up macro shots to show stitching detail, fabric weaves etc. I was looking at the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM as I did quite like the look of the macro feature. However, the salesperson at my local store thought that the 19-135 STM Canon lens would be the better option for me? He didn't seem to be much of a fan of Sigma, so not too sure if it was just purely a recommendation on brand, and not my requirements.
If you want to do easy video the STM lenses are important if just photographing the Sigma 17-70 is excellent. truthfully I don't remember it doing any better macro work than the kit but it is overall a better photo lens.
Nice review Toby. It's possible for you to review the Canon 6D for us? I would love to see your thoughts about the 6D. Currently I thinking between 5D Mk3 or 6D, but here in Germany you have to pay round about 1000€ more for the 5D Mk3 :( For 1000€ you can get for example a Sigma 35mm 1.4 or something else...
Great Vid, I only have T1i had it for about 5-6 years I have only two lens 18-135 stm and 50mm 1/8. I am at my max with this DSLR. I would like to upgrade to full frame. The two cameras I been thinking of is 5DM3 and D750 I hate to jump ship because I am so use to Canon but I really would like to do indoor shots and video and sports which Camera is the best for my money for what I am doing?
Does the Canon 70D have a focusing problem? I found some videos and sites online where people were saying it can't focus at super wide apertures using the center focusing block, or something like that. Any truth to that? I'm considering buying this camera as my first DSLR.
is the 70d a/f still as good when shooting stills as apposed to the live view, i am thinking about upgrading from the canon 700d mainly because of the focus on the 700d with a 55-250 stm lens, as you call it the wamp/wamp which is annoying
Hi, I recently got a 70D, I also got two lenses (55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II and 50mm f/1.8 STM and also the kit lens 18-55mm ) Though I am happy with lenses I am not satisfied and I would like to get a better walk around lens or a better telephoto lens. I did see your other video about which lens to get and I am still confused. It would be nice if you could suggest me one. And also a good tripod and a travel bag for my camera and lenses, Thank-you!!
I am considering purchasing the 70D as a kit with the EF-S 18-55 F/3.5-5.6 STM and the 55 - 250mm F/4/5.6 IS II. The price seems very attractive, $1300, and I'm wondering if this is good value and is this equipment appropriate for my upcoming trip to the Serengetti. Thanks for your help.
Hi Harvey - it is a very good value. I do suggest you get the STM version of the 55-250 though - it is a little bit sharper and will let you crop to zoom a little more for those safari photos. B&H currently has best deal with a free bag, SD card and spare battery included www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/986390-REG/canon_8469b009_canon_eos_70d_dslr.html?BI=4773&KBID=5287
hi, i'm thinking about to buy 70D, but i have question, most important for me: how long video can you make in one shot? i think, 60D was able to make 15 minutes in one shot. and that's not too much, if you do for instance a whole wedding ceremony ...
Hey CameraRec Toby, congratulations on your videos, I love them since they are super clear and comprehensive, keep on the GREAT work! BTW, I like the "look" of your videos. Do you post process them on any software or upload them right from the camera? Saludos desde México!
I have the 70d...i was going to pick up the nx1 but they didnt have it, so I got the 70d on impulse buy. so far I love it and its the first professional dslr camera ...can you do a comparison video between the 70d and the nx1?..Some people say that the 70d is better than the nx1 in ISO and AF in certain areas... Can you talk about that? I would like you specifically compare them both the pros and the cons...i would appreciate that comparison because I don't mind also picking up the nx1 but if you recommend getting another camera what would you recommend and what zoom lenses are the best for the 70d?..it won't hurt to have both...let me know, thanks
hi Toby! Is 70d recommended for take videos at weddings with autofocus on? I am asking you because even 5d mark III is used in wedding with manual focus. Thanks.
Awesome detailed reviews Sir. Can you please do a test on video record time on the 70d. To answer the question if it shoots video longer than 29 min 59 seconds.
hi, i am thinking of upgrading my 600d to the 70d, my type of photography is events such as weddings, parties and also portraits...can u pls tell me if this is the right camera for me and what lenses would be best.thank..
Have you tried the EYE-FI card as a transitional back up for your photos? Do you think that doing this wifi to computer tranfers would make up for the lack of space?
REGINALD GREEN I do use Eye-fi cards but only to transfer selected images to mobile devices. I would not use them to transfer all images/backup - that is a big drain on battery life.
Nope - The viewfinders in these cameras are optical so they cannot simulate the effects of ISO or shutter speed. They can show you a depth of field preview, when you press the button but that is it.
Hi ! Great review but I am still confused between the Nikon D7100 and the Canon 70D, I am a beginner and I am mostly into photography and once I buy a camera I will be keeping it for at least next 5 years so can you please help me decide ? Thanx
Thanks for the great review. I have watched the series and found them extremely informative. What lenses do you use with your 70D and what 2 lenses would you add if you didn't have the full frame bodies.?
Hi Allan, I have a list of my favorite Canon lenses Recommended Lenses for the Canon 70D & other crop sensor Canon and I love primes 5 Reasons you should own a prime lens but to directly answer your question. The 40mm f/2.8 would be in my bag - I can happily shoot with just that lens. The 18-55 is quite good too. What will you be photographing/videographing?
HELP I have now sold all my lenses but 2... The 18-135mm STM and the 50 1.8. Would you think this combination is sufficient for my 70D: 1) Canon 10-18 STM 2) Sigma 18-35mm 3) Sigma 50mm 1.4 (Art great review👍) 4) Canon 100mm L 2.8 5) Canon 70-200 II IS or Tamron 70-200VC to replace the 18-135 STM I shoot 2 hrs of Church video (sermons and events) every weekend. And stills: events, portrait, landscape and night... My first pirchase choice is proving hard. Either the 18-35mm or the 50mm which would you get?
I am seriously thinking about buying the 70D to use at airshows, however I recently read a review that stated the Dual Pixel technology wouldn't allow focus tracking. Would this affect use of AI Servo mode (which I use a lot on my 50D bodies).
SoCal Airshow Review You want to video or photo the airshows? It does do focus tracking for both photos and video but it wont be fast enough in live view for planes zooming by. On photos it does have options for tracking but you might consider the new 7D Mark II which has an upgrade focus system and for the money is an excellent value when you need really fast focusing.
Man... you REALLY do a good job reviewing.
Thank you. And I am always happy to answer questions.
Yes -there is a dedicated button near the shutter for quick selection of focus type and point.
Consider Magic Lantern Software - it is custom firmware, not available for 70D yet but will be soon (probably) and would allow you to get around limit. Also offers loads of nifty features.
I have some audio tests coming up in the next few weeks, will have more to say about audio soon. Up till now I have only used external recorders.
I hear that but that applies to all of the DSLRS except for Sonys and the Panasonic - both of which aren't actually DSLRS. and they do make loupes/clip on devices for the viewfinders in these situations.
Visit my facebook page - link there to the blog post I did this morning on the D5300. Just a few quick thoughts. Thanks!
STM - it is the newer tech from Canon that has optimized motors for video - focus is smoother.
it really means neither - it gives you slightly more fine tune editing control and supposedly better quality but the quality difference isn't something one would notice. I would think that green screen would work equally well in either setting.
I just checked on the C line again and I believe it's just the C500 that shoots in higher bit depths than 8. The 100 and 300 still use CODEC's that record at 8-bit (Canon XF and AVCHD). I could be wrong, but I believe that is correct.
nope - when in live view or recording video the mirror flips up which blocks the viewfinder.
5D Mark 3 with 24-70 f/2.8 II. Pretty sweet combination.
Greetings!
For anyone wondering what can be done about not having an audio output connection, Get you a Shure VP83F mic for the audio monitoring! Works great!
Yes it will!
Thanks for the helpful review! I really liked the get-to-the-point style, which saves me time and makes it easier to make a decision.
I am excited about the Video side and also the options of HDR or Night Portrait. I also think it will be an update for low light photo's
Thanks again Toby. Great 2nd review.
Thank you for your review. Your earlier review, together with reviews from others on the video focusing on this camera, together with wifi capability, convinced me to go and get the 70D last year. No regrets here. Very happy with the camera.
The more I use it the more I love it. Really a nice camera. Thanks!
Link under the view labeled "Buying a review product. . " has my recommended SD cards for this camera.
I enjoyed the review, the 70d looks like a good camera for prime focus astrophotography with my 130mm f5 reflector telescope. What Cannon product would you reccomend for astrophotograhy?
Thanks
Mike
Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions.
Hi. last time i was shooting with my Canon 70d with the EF 40mm (Pancake), once the cam battery gone, i decided to use my old Canon 500D again with the 40mm Pancake lens, i was surprised once i got somehow nicer pictures than the ones i was having before using the 70d...
Yep - watch th-cam.com/video/R1SG_A3-tfc/w-d-xo.htmlm It is cued up to the section you need to watch.
Hi Toby,
I am kind of confused which DSLR camera to buy between Canon 70d or Nikon 7100.
Yep :) No camera is perfect but the 70D really is a nice camera.
Thanks, I appreciate that.
Im getting my 70D tomorrow.. Cant wait. What do you think about the Sigma 30mm 1.4,(gen 2) will that lens work for filming? Thank you for the best 70D review on youtube! It answers all my questions about the Canon 70D!
Best regards/ Jimmy
Excellent review. Btw, you're right. Lighting and background are beautiful! Nice high quality, thorough. Informative review. Thanks!
Thanks Toby for this great review ( and others on your channel). It helped me decide to skip over the T5i to the 70D and I couldn't be any happier.
Nice - Stay tuned for more 70D user guide videos coming this Spring. Sign up for my newsletter if you want to be notified when it is released digital.photorecommendations.com/recs/newsletter/
This is a great review! So concise, so easy to follow, and with beautiful scenery :) Thanks!
Thanks!
What would you say is a good external microphone for this camera? I would be recording myself talking for TH-cam. Thank you!
please explain which frame rate and option for video is better
hi Toby, i really like your in depth analysis and excellent reviews of dslrs cameras. i dont really like the bulk of dslrs and think that mirrorless cameras like sony nex 6 can create a paradigm shift by allowing more portability and providing similar quality and features as the dslrs and also on similar price points. i would really appreciate if you can provide your analysis on the image quality comparison and other trade-offs with sony nex 6 compared to dslrs like canon and nikon. if possible, a video comparison would really benefit me and help me decide. i am just an enthusiast who is learning photography and want to have the best image quality using the APS-C size sensors within 1000 bucks
Thanks for that very detailed pros and cons run down.
70d looks good all around but would the mk3 be a better choice for taking great landscape pics. If I did that I can only buy one lens! Which one would you suggest for landscape . Thanks
Great video! Thinking of upgrading my 2002 Rebel and this would be a nice step. Especially since I have 2 nice EF lenses
Would be an awesome upgrade!
I've seen all your videos for the 70D so far. I'll think I'll get one since I have 5-6 crop-sensor lens from my old 10D. Awesome channel, keep up the good work :)
I was thinking about getting the 70D as well until the Mark ii came out couple of weeks ago -_- lol
Hi Toby, at about 5:55 you mention the higher bit rates for video. Does that mean higher bit depth for color so you can do better green screen compositing? Or is it just higher quality images? Thanks!
Once again a great job toby :)
Today i read somewhere that Nikon has announced D5300 and the good news is anti aliasing filter has been taken off the camera n now its shoots at 1080p @ 50/60 fps... would love to hear your comments on it...
Never say never about video recording...if the bug bites you, you'll get hooked. ;)
Best of luck in your decision.
Nice - thanks for that info.
thanks! and great review. I like the 70D but the D7100 it's really really tempting..
Thanks for nice review Toby! Can you please do a review of the new Pentax K3
hi Toby, a thing I never asked: does canon or nikon dslrs have the exposure simulation (*even*, in the case of Canon) in the OVF? thanks
Hi Toby,
Great work.I have two issues with my 70D.
A nice prime lens. for video the 40mm f/2.8 or the 35mm f/2 with IS. 5 Reasons you should own a prime lens
hey toby, do you think it is a worthy upgrade from the 650d? or are the differences not significant enough? thanks!
The manual says the 70D does have a mini-HDMI out; so it appears you can send out a direct HDMI signal for post edit after all.
It is compressed HDMI -good enough for viewing, not for editing. That's the difference.

Nice review
Yes. Manual focus is absolutely silent.
+masterbum82 thank you...
Thanks. They are straight from the camera.
Hi Toby. What DSLR camera and lens did you used in shooting for this review? I love it's quality. Just subscribed.:)
Probably GH4
The NX1 is a mirrorless cam though.
hi Toby! Is 70d recommended for take videos at weddings with autofocus on? I am asking you because even 5d mark III is used in wedding with manual focus. Thanks.
Faranume Faratara The 70D can be used for weddings. Better is the NX1 th-cam.com/video/qLoIeD6qVa0/w-d-xo.html
Awesome detailed reviews Sir. Can you please do a test on video record time on the 70d. To answer the question if it shoots video longer than 29 min 59 seconds.
It doesn't. It is a fixed limit for 29 minutes and a few seconds.
hi, i am thinking of upgrading my 600d to the 70d, my type of photography is events such as weddings, parties and also portraits...can u pls tell me if this is the right camera for me and what lenses would be best.thank..
Toby, is it possible to shoot movies looking through the view finder instead of the lcd monitor?
Nope - The viewfinders in these cameras are optical so they cannot simulate the effects of ISO or shutter speed. They can show you a depth of field preview, when you press the button but that is it.
Hi ! Great review but I am still confused between the Nikon D7100 and the Canon 70D,
I am a beginner and I am mostly into photography and once I buy a camera I will be keeping it for at least next 5 years so can you please help me decide ? Thanx
Mohammad shehroz Both are very good. D7100 is slightly sharper with better dynamic range. 70D if you plan to do some video.
HELP
I have now sold all my lenses but 2... The 18-135mm STM and the 50 1.8.
Would you think this combination is sufficient for my 70D:
1) Canon 10-18 STM
2) Sigma 18-35mm
3) Sigma 50mm 1.4 (Art great review👍)
4) Canon 100mm L 2.8
5) Canon 70-200 II IS or Tamron 70-200VC to replace the 18-135 STM
I shoot 2 hrs of Church video (sermons and events) every weekend.
