My daughter purchased the grand highlander Hybrid and the size is great for their 3 kids as they have the 8 passenger. Another great review, thanks. I have a 2011 Lexus RX350 and have been interested to get a new Lexus for sometime. However with higher MSRP than a few years ago, dealers adding fees, super high interest rates, long wait times, looming recession, etc. I have been in waiting mode and have been maintaining my car instead. Am I the only person who thinks this is not a good time to get a new car? Thank you for your feedback.

We just bought my husband a Lexus RX 350h. We were debating between that or the Toyota Highlander hybrid. In the end we went with Lexus because they have greater inventory and sell below MSRP with dealership discounts. In the US, Toyotas are really hard to come by and sell between 5-10k over MSRP. So if I had to choose between a Lexus TX500h or a Toyota Grand Highlander 500h, I'd go with Lexus because I might get a dealership discount and it may end up being equal or cheaper than the Toyota equivalent. It's pretty crazy.

I think you guys absolutely hit the mark with this review. I don't know why Toyota/Lexus overcomplicates things with their designs and configurations. All we want is a simple AWD, V6 with a 2nd row bench seat that can seat 7-8 passengers with a fold-flat cargo space. The Sequoia would have fit the bill nicely but Toyota screwed the pooch with the ridiculous cargo space design. Moving up to the Lexus TX, the only V6 option only offers 6-passenger and captain's chairs. It's like Toyota is playing these "mind games" with customers. Gets overly frustrating for someone like us who just wants a simple configuration. Honda/Acura are so much simpler with their Pilot/MDX so we will be looking at that option. Lastly, I agree with some of your viewers that the grill on the TX is just plain ugly. The grill needs to be chrome or black. Grills that are the same color as the body simply does not work.
Good luck finding any Toyota other than the pickups. Currently in az you are buying now for a late august delivery with full price and the standard dealer add on crapware like paint protection and cables
The PHEV has the bulletproof 3.5L engine. Wish that would have been available in the GH. But I bought the GH hybrid, which is fantastic. Have yet to wish it had more hp. Getting 34-40 mpg in everyday driving.
Honestly when it comes down to it, two decisions. 1, Do you need 8 or 7 seats? 2, Which dealer gives you the better experience? We went with the TX mainly because we really did not like the local Toyota dealer experience.
I think Lexus buyers are happy with a roomy 6 passenger. I believe Lexus knows it’s customer and for people looking to pack 7-8 passengers, the Grand H. and Sienna are the choices for a true family hauler.

Can you please tell me if the TX is significantly quieter than the grand Highlander? Will I notice any difference in cabin noise? How about body roll? Thanks much.
For me, the only difference then is extra premium feel of the cabin, including cabin noise/sound deafening and if I want to say I drive a Lexus over a Toyota.
Yes, it would be nice to see Lexus offer the Hybrid without the F-Sport packaging plus it's only a 6-passenger vehicle, so it may not work for all families who want to haul more people.
For me the two things that make the Grand Highlander more appealing is its available high mileage hybrid and the fact that it has a three place backseat which for my family means being able to put one in the back and have a bigger cargo area for road trips since you can fold 2/3rd of the seat rather than half.
I so agree with the missed opportunity of the tx going 2 person third row. I also hate that the grand highlander max doesn't option the second row bench in thier highest trim.
Great video as always. Can you guys please help me and give good advice. We are playing to purchase either a grand Highlander hybrid limited or Lexus tx base awd. What do you think is the better long term 8-12 years vehicle thanks so much.
Most of Lexus' sales are just gussied up Toyotas; RX, NX, ES. But in those cases, they do a good job differentiating the Lexus from the Toyota. Not so much with this thing. I certainly wouldn't pay the premium over the GH.
Same..when I heard a TX phev was coming out, thought maybe it’d be the one. But after hearing the specs, somewhat lame V6, and potential msrp, no thanks. Surprised GH didn’t get a phev.
Um, just want to clarify, you can put regular gas in any of these cars but do not do this regularly. They both need premium fuel as both have turbos and direct along with port injection. The entire point of having port injection is to get sure the intake ports and valves remain uncontaminated by the recirculating gases from the crankcase. Unless you install a catch can or delete the recirculating system, you need to use premium fuel.
If I am buying a car with 3 rows I want 7-8 passenger seats, if you can squeeze in a 9th one even better lol. I don't care if you tie him up on the roof as long as it's legal.
Trying to find moms new ride, she has had a couple lexus models before but rhid thing has a face only a mother could love. I think this thing might be a hard sell over the grand highlander.
Interesting. The hybrid packages don't really get much better MPG than the gasoline version. And the gasoline version will probably last 50 to 100,000 mi more with good maintenance then the hybrid when the battery fails at between 150 and 200,000 miles.
I appreciate this review and perspective. It validates my thoughts on the difference between the GH and the TX. I own a gas model GH, and it's great. I don't think it's worth the price premium for the TX. I was really looking forward to the TX, but this first generation just isn't good enough. We'll see what the next gen TX is going to look like.
I feel the issue for Lexus is that Toyota has produced a fantastic vehicle with the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. Unless the badge is very important to you, the Hybrid Max is a great choice. Glad you are enjoying your gas model GH.
@@andreaspencer9813 I agree with your assessment! It's hard to find a hybrid max in Texas without a massive "market adjustment," but I'm happy with my purchase. I was really lucky; I found the car through Car Edge and drove to the dealership to find a hybrid and the gas model. The hybrid was already sold, but the one platinum gas model was available. We negotiated pretty hard to avoid paying dealer add-ons and market adjustments. We're happy with it, but I need more fuel efficiency! I went from a Tesla model y to a Grand Highlander. 😂 it's a jarring difference.
It's very simple. If you have the money, buy the Lexus for more luxury, refinement, and brand name. If not, get the Toyota and be practical. Another factor will be the interior/exterior design. In this case, I like the Grand Highlander exterior and TX for the interior.
You used the same argument on the Mazda cx 90 about seating. The Lexus is horrendous in looks and does look like a shoe box van for being on the same platform.
I don’t see any logical reason why the TX would even consider becoming an 8-passenger. Its ‘somewhat’ in a different market category. A growing family might need space (who really has 6 ‘extra’ rear passengers anyway… or anymore). If you need the space, get Toyota’s amazing minivan. They are the best in that category. But between the Grand Highlander versus the TX? I’d go for a base Lexus TX over the G.H. Platinum. Reasons being Lexus build quality and materials (better), badge (entry luxury vs. the more pedestrian Toyota), dealership experience (including an extra free year of warranty) and resale value. But that my somewhat biased (but still logical) opinion. I just might suggest maybe to spring for the first trim level that provides that Mark Levinson Reference Sound System… you will not be disappointed. Thanks for the video.
Not having the option in the higher trims for bench seating for 8 passengers is really confusing for me. I actually bought a platinum highlander last year and didn't notice it had bucket seats until I was about to drive off and turned right back around and gave the car back. This is a huge selling point for me and I know they offer the bench seating in the limited addition on the grand highlander as well as the mid trim in the Lexus, but I wanted the top trim. Can someone please tell them they would sell more cars by offering this one little option? Makes absolutely no sense to me.
Living out west we can't go full EV yet. We really like the look and interior of the Telluride but a condition of getting rid of the minivan is fuel efficiency. Grand Highlander hybrid limited it is.
while there may be some demand for an 8 seater version, the business case may not be there. on a related note, there may not be enough production capacity to make an 8 seater version as well. product planners try to optimize the maximum amount of profit out of existing or planned production capacity … the product mix at launch is their best guess estimate of what is going to provide the biggest return to shareholders. The wants of what is probably a relatively small subset of buyers looking for maximum seating capacity are of lesser importance.
As great as the Grand Highlander and TX are, I'd still lean towards the Sienna. Up to 8 passenger seating in the Sienna with AWD availability, and equipment wise there isn't anything in the GH that I'm really missing out on in the Sienna. The Sienna is also cheaper at the top trim and can haul more cargo with its well behind the third row when in 7/8 passenger form. It just seems illogical to opt for the Grand Highlander when the Sienna can do everything somebody could ask for in most driving situations and at a cheaper price point and offer more cargo and passenger room. 🤷♀️
just like people buy luxury cars because of the look and whether we like it or not, automobiles are status symbols and people preferrence, and lots of people just do not like the Minivan look, otherwise if look and badge do not matter then no one would buy a cadillac, suburban, merc, bmw etc etc...everyone would be riding in vand
I'd spring for the sienna if it was offered with a bit more power + modern driver assistance tech. Both things you can get in the SUV that Toyota refuses to offer in the minivan.
@@ExpertTH-camCommentatorexactly. If everyone buy things based on practicality, there will be no sport cars, no luxury watches, handbags, restaurants, concerts, basketball games, movies. It is ok to spend money if you can afford it.
Had a chance to see a Grand Highlander in person last week. XLE trim. The hard plastics everywhere was a no go for me. The dash, upper/mid/lower door trims. It is not acceptable at this point. Toyota should take a lesson from Mazda. Even the cheapest Mazda vehicles have soft touch materials around the upper door panels.
Is the Fsport performance tuning really that noticable when compared to Hybrid Max in sport mode? Also don't forget with TX you need to purchase 3 of the 4 available packages (that's another $4k) to get the same features that come standard with the Platinum trim GH. I reckon for most folks the GH HM will be the better deal compared to the 550h unless they really want the Lexus badge or don't care about pricing.
I’m not sure if you can use 87 octane gasoline in TX without hurting the engine. I talked to JM Lexus dealer about it and they said that engine was built for 91 gasoline.
Lexus told us that premium fuel is required but if you choose to use regular, it won't hurt the engine in the short term but possibly long term it could. As well you won't get the horsepower, torque or fuel economy numbers if you don't use premium fuel.
Octane is octane. There is no chemical difference between 87 and 91. 91 just has some additives to increase or decrease the detonation temp of the fuel. The onboard computer decides what's acceptable based on programming which affects the Knock sensors.
I hate car manufacturers who have no bench seat option in their higher trims and offer only bench seats. What if someone wants bench seat and also extra features over a base trim.
The TX grill looks like the Highlander circa 2019 or earlier. The "blades" highlander. TOYOTA is better. I got the Grand Highlander Standard Hybrid Limited. This is the one to get: - it has a TRAIL mode - seats up to 8 - Regular Unleaded - 34 - 36 MPG HYBRID - Nearly 600 mile range - no turbo means more reliability - No starter, no alternator, no drive belt , no plugs just gas It has a sport mode and 0-60 is 7.8 secs. Most are not trying to race. It's for trips and passengers without looking like a soccer mom.
Toyota and Lexus both are really making you bend over and spread em wide if you want a trailer hitch. Also the GH has that light gray and portobello interior for the hot climate areas so you don’t burn your buns after giving up to get a trailer hitch…!
Both are big disappointments to me. All I ask for is a 3 row SUV, with realistic hybrid mileage and a dark brown interior... The Toyota MAX only gets 26 MPG (so no hybrid mileage) and is the only model that offers the Portobello interior. The TX has a nice Peppercorn interior, but no hybrid offers it. In my view, offering only a black or grey interior takes them out of the luxury car category and puts them with the KIA/Hyundai class vehicle.
@@tgc6744exactly. People always demand unrealistic expectations. I want a three row SUV like a size if a Suburban, get 50MPG, cost $30k and drives itself. If I can find one like that I will buy 3 in cash.
Lexus TX is only for Show Off and many people will do that (if PHEV was not that expensive). I know at least 5 people driving Lexus GX just for their daily commute on urban roads to show off.
The grand Highlander and Tx are both MUCH bigger than a qx60 or MDX. Its kinda confusing bc both the Highlander and TX are “bigger” than the Sequoia and LX respectfully. That makes these unique in the class. A more fair comparison to qx60 and Mdx are the regular highlander and RX which have similar interior spaces. These both don’t really have a comparable model as they are “Full Size” SUVs and sit between a body on frame truck Large SUV and a 7 passenger midsize SUV.
Andrea_motormouth I know very well that the Lexus TX 350 is based on the Toyota Grand Highlander. ↕️ The Lexus TX 350 and 500h are already built on a very very stable and strong foundation for these SUV'S are built on the Toyota Grand Highlander.
@@andreaspencer9813 I noticed you said you can put regular fuel on the TX, and that it won't hurt the engine. Is this from a Lexus source? or just assumption because they share the same engine as GH?
@melvinjrbaldonado7721 Lexus prefers premium fuel to get the power numbers and fuel economy. But Lexus did say you won't hurt the engine if you use regular. I would go with premium myself if that is what the manufacturer recommends.
I got my GH limited Vehicle last week. I like the vehicle. Two issues are it doesn’t have Driver easy speak and second while on Bluetooth call the other end caller cannot hear passenger side person voice. This model comes with microphone on driver and passenger side. But not working, anybody has this issue? Dealer saying microphone on driver side only picks sound, what kind of nonsense. Then what is the point of microphone at passenger side. Any input from any GH owners?
No. Toyota and Lexus is mainstream to premium. Palisade and Telluride are both high-level mainstream. It would be more like Hyundai Palisade to Genesis GV80, but that's not a direct comparison.
It requires premium fuel but if you use regular it will not hurt the engine short-term, long term it could. However, you will not get the horsepower and torque numbers or fuel economy numbers if you use regular
Great review. I've been going back and forth on these two. Now I'm more undecided than ever.
I agree with you Zack on seats. Give 7 and 8 seats on all trims. Let me choose.
Finally reviewers who are actually practical compared to those who get star struck by lexus badging.
They leave off from one of the big plusses for Lexus, which is the quieter ride.
With two kids under the age of 5 that’s a non issue.
They missed comparing braking distance... TX is materially better with bigger brakes
So glad to see another episode of versus!!
Agree…should have seating for 8. Let customer decide if they want to carry 6, 7 or 8 passengers.

I want to see this go against the CX90
Great video as always. Can you guys please help me and give good advice. We are playing to purchase either a grand Highlander hybrid limited or Lexus tx base awd. What do you think is the better long term 8-12 years vehicle thanks so much.
Interesting to know both are so similar but only thing I like is TX’s dashboard design better. Great show Andrea! 👍🏻☕️☕️
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@andreaspencer9813 I am enjoying it very much to see compared one vehicle to another.
SAME CAR! I love my Grand Highlander
Most of Lexus' sales are just gussied up Toyotas; RX, NX, ES. But in those cases, they do a good job differentiating the Lexus from the Toyota. Not so much with this thing. I certainly wouldn't pay the premium over the GH.
The TX is the only one that offers a plug in hybrid which allows you to go full ev for city driving which is what most buyers will do
And a V6. Just gotta see how much it’ll cost, I’m hearing 80k.
@@davidd7175 I‘be decided to pass on the plugin as there’s no massaging chairs, no panoramic sunroof, only seats 6, and no blacked out chrome
Just saw a Toyota Canada ad for the Grande Highlander. 64 month lease at 8.5 % APR. 😲😲 Sign me up 😂
Lease? Cash all day every day.
The over long front over hang on the TX is the worst part of the styling IMO.
If I am buying a car with 3 rows I want 7-8 passenger seats, if you can squeeze in a 9th one even better lol. I don't care if you tie him up on the roof as long as it's legal.
Terrific review! Thank-you.
Do you think the grand Highlander 2.4 turbo w/ 18wheels non hybrid is a good car?
No review on the PHEV aspect?
Love both 1st choice is LExus
What is lexus thinking?
Grand Highlander hybrid limited it is.
the MPG for the Highway is really not very impressive, this can do the European brands better.
I like both of them ❤🔥👍
while there may be some demand for an 8 seater version, the business case may not be there. on a related note, there may not be enough production capacity to make an 8 seater version as well. product planners try to optimize the maximum amount of profit out of existing or planned production capacity … the product mix at launch is their best guess estimate of what is going to provide the biggest return to shareholders. The wants of what is probably a relatively small subset of buyers looking for maximum seating capacity are of lesser importance.
What was the cabin noise and wind noise comparison?
As great as the Grand Highlander and TX are, I'd still lean towards the Sienna. Up to 8 passenger seating in the Sienna with AWD availability, and equipment wise there isn't anything in the GH that I'm really missing out on in the Sienna. The Sienna is also cheaper at the top trim and can haul more cargo with its well behind the third row when in 7/8 passenger form. It just seems illogical to opt for the Grand Highlander when the Sienna can do everything somebody could ask for in most driving situations and at a cheaper price point and offer more cargo and passenger room. 🤷♀️
The whole point of a 3rd row SUV is your trying to not look like a minivan.
just like people buy luxury cars because of the look and whether we like it or not, automobiles are status symbols and people preferrence, and lots of people just do not like the Minivan look, otherwise if look and badge do not matter then no one would buy a cadillac, suburban, merc, bmw etc etc...everyone would be riding in vand
Great video - I think for price, Toyota has the win. Love Lexus - but doesn’t seem worth the up charge in this case. IMO.
In my POV this Lexus model's grill looks fine, and I can understand whereby Lexus has their version of an Aerodynamic front. 😎
The TX reminds me of the predator from aliens vs predator
Is the Fsport performance tuning really that noticable when compared to Hybrid Max in sport mode?
Also don't forget with TX you need to purchase 3 of the 4 available packages (that's another $4k) to get the same features that come standard with the Platinum trim GH. I reckon for most folks the GH HM will be the better deal compared to the 550h unless they really want the Lexus badge or don't care about pricing.
The F Sport models performance is pretty sweet, there is a difference between the Grand Highlander Hybrid Max and the F Sport.
Where are they made? Same factory?
yes
Indiana, USA
Princeton, Ind. For the Lexus...
Sequoia vs TX Lex vs LX 600 which is more spacious
When did Lexus delete the analog clock?
I hate car manufacturers who have no bench seat option in their higher trims and offer only bench seats. What if someone wants bench seat and also extra features over a base trim.
The TX grill looks like the Highlander circa 2019 or earlier. The "blades" highlander.
TOYOTA is better. I got the Grand Highlander Standard Hybrid Limited. This is the one to get:
- it has a TRAIL mode
- seats up to 8
- Regular Unleaded
- 34 - 36 MPG HYBRID
- Nearly 600 mile range
- no turbo means more reliability
- No starter, no alternator, no drive belt , no plugs just gas
It has a sport mode and 0-60 is 7.8 secs.
Most are not trying to race. It's for trips and passengers without looking like a soccer mom.
What color did you get bryana? sounds like what you said is true. this seems to be the best model. you get more bang for your buck.
Toyota and Lexus both are really making you bend over and spread em wide if you want a trailer hitch. Also the GH has that light gray and portobello interior for the hot climate areas so you don’t burn your buns after giving up to get a trailer hitch…!
It's a family hauler so I prefer a better mpg than pay more for power.
Unrealistic expectations. Give me a 3 row SUV with the same power and torque as the max that gets better MPG.
I’ve never needed 8 passenger seating.
I hear you Lexus but I'm not a fan of the six-seater. Coulda made it seven easily. grande highlander all the way
Andrea_motormouth
I know very well that the Lexus TX 350 is based on the Toyota Grand Highlander.
↕️
The Lexus TX 350 and 500h are already built on a very very stable and strong foundation for these SUV'S are built on the Toyota Grand Highlander.
Fine vehicle. Will be limited only by production capacity and high price.
Who cares about a giant screen vs almost giant screen 😂
In Canada, you need to wait for 12 months to get a Hybrid Max. So, ... F That!
Does TX require premium fuel?
Yes it does
Sorry just saw you said that right at the beginning 😂, my phone was muted when I started the video the first time
@@boydsorem7706 No problem
Are these the Japanese version of the Korean twins Palisade and Telluride
No. Toyota and Lexus is mainstream to premium. Palisade and Telluride are both high-level mainstream. It would be more like Hyundai Palisade to Genesis GV80, but that's not a direct comparison.
Both worth nothing dated overpriced over msrp and made in usa downgrade reliability.
I bought the grandhighlander xle awd more then i need!!!
Comparing the low end lexus to highest grand highlander? LOL i test drove both and have a TX500H in my garage now 😂
0:20 “Require” or “Recommend”? If it requires 91 Octane fuel, I think it is best to use it during warranty 😆
It requires premium fuel but if you use regular it will not hurt the engine short-term, long term it could. However, you will not get the horsepower and torque numbers or fuel economy numbers if you use regular
