You breaking it down to much 5 minute intervals work dude
Which curve are they exactly talking about? From what I could understand was that Elon was giving an equation which went something like this "Whatever that is you are working on: "What would be the utility delta compared to the current state-of-the art * How many people it would effect."
Pay close attention to the section on AI - the place we are at now in 2023 and the fact that this is a conversation between Sam (now CEO OpenAI) and Elon (Founder and now disowned OpenAI) is remarkable
Well Elon and Sam had already founded openai at that time, so not thaaaaaaat coincidental
Elon Musk invested in Open AI and sold the Open AI stocks thats it, he didn't play any architecutre or Technical role in progress or founding of the OpenAI
secret parties under the guise of Microsoft might already have made the moves Elon has mentioned in this interviews.
I wonder who are on the board of Microsoft

For some reason, this reminds me of my first job interview

"I really was just trying to be useful" - 4:53
wrr
@@zes3813 what is wrr?
19:15 It's sad that no one appreciated Elon's lighthearted humor and ambition.
My key takeaways are:
* Your ideas need not change the world to be good!
*
Top things I would work on if I was in my 20's: ethical AI, something in the domain of genetics, having a high bandwidth interface with the brain
*
Estimating if you would be useful: ("utility delta of the product you're building or the difference a product makes in someone's life" x "how many people it would effect")
*
It's ok to feel fearful of the probability of something working or not and but acceptance of it diminishes it to some degree!
*
Merging neural link and the digital extension of ourselves along with the democratization of AI would be the best way to go!
nice comment
Elon is telling Sam that AI is probably going to have the largest impact on humanity and and you can see Sam nodding: "OK, I'll work on that then". History in the making for all to see. Wow.
Chills!
yh no. Sam already worked at openai before this interview started. Nice story tho
Pretty sure he had to go down that path before this interview to be where he is today. He didn’t just roll off the couch and get to interview Elon. He was already doing influential things back then and definitely in the AI space.
@@xsuploader lol Musk was the primary doner to openAI

He motivates me not to study hard(I’m at the point now learning is just cause I like it, do it at my own pace. He motivates me to try to be my best, not give up on self and my dreams..he makes me feel like my dreams are possible…💕 so maybe I should try/care..again..💕
Yea, Daddy Elon is your extrinsic motivation
Man, I'd love to get a peek in that plant. Some serious machinery going on. I love that stuff. Inspiring talk.

Elon seem very sacrificial; ready to sacrifice money, time and effort. His appeared humbleness and genuiness makes him different from other billionaires and entrepreunurs. We need more ppl like him and not the celebrity kinds.
... Have you read any books about him? Alot of people make it clear that he's ... tough on others.
@@joemirag Probably because he's even tougher on himself.
He is a celebrity.
@@AM-ry8is Yes, he is one now. But he's much more than a celebrity. It's not like you code your way into X.com, team up with Tiel and others to form PayPal, get hundreds of millions only to risk *everything*, and then some more, in SpaceX and Tesla. Let's not compare him to typical Internet celebrities, please.
I don't know think "sacrificial" is the right word, and I am not saying he is selfish either. He is a person very motivated by a sense of purpose in life.
I want tons of money but I don't know what I would spend it on in a actually meaningful way. It's better that people like Elon Musk Have the most money
I want to buy 20 Games every day
Don't listen to what people say. Look at what they do.
This is fascinating to watch in hindsight. History tends to get abstracted down to simple headlines, but this is like getting a glimpse into the actual human dynamic between two very influential people at two very different points in their careers. Love it!
Awesome interview.
he's so down to earth and doesn't appear to carry a whiff of egotism.
I'd say he's more up in space (wink wink)
You should read his Ashlee Vance biography then.
Aged like milk
Thanks for your love and support
HE will fire if you fail his surprise quizzes or if your projects fail.
This guy is so genuine and down to earth and still nice considering everyone was shitting on him, what a guy.
Thank you Elon and Sam for this q&a session. Very usefull.
I think Elon makes so much pauses mainly due to two things:
1.- He struggles to find the right words to explain such complicated topics in a way the average person can understand.
2. - His mind just works too fast which makes it harder for him to put his thoughts into words.
Haha, exactly my thoughts. This world of existing in a human body and having to live by the rules of our universe is a burden to his mind.
You want computers to make ethical decisions
He is a time traveler trying to not reveal too much.
you keep giving him accolades...hes intelligent...and he will manipulate you
Have you ever had a dream... that you have... you could... you you you want you
We need part 2 of this interview please!
2016: Sam altman ask Elon Musk how yo be the next Elon Musk
2023: Sam Altman is the next Elon Musk
Elon musk interviews give the best questions
It now feels funny seeing Sam ask Elon about OpenAI.
Sam asks such great questions. For those that don't know, he's the CEO of OpenAI
Your perspective from human life is inspiring!
A genius talking to a genius
If the interviewer wasn’t a genius he wouldn’t be getting exclusive interviews to bigger geniuses and get that much subscribers. So it’s quite an accomplishment
I really likes it when Elon pauses for finishing that sentence coz its worth the wait.!!
U are awesome Elon.
Keep up the great work.
All the best to all the people, that have the privilege to work with you.
Regards from Czech Republic.
It's almost weird seeing Sam Altman interviewing Elon Musk and talking about AI development.
You are an extraordinary communicator,
You Just go to the deepest goals, thoughts and dreams.
6:34 ; "radical innovation" is what makes Elon and his companies stand out
thank you for uploading this inspiring interview :)
This is a piece of history
Great underrated interview of Elon Musk
This is a good interview thumbs up bro
excellent interview, thank you so much. i have watched many bad interviews with him.
This was great, thank you!
Wow
I love that fact that he’s just wants to “Move the ball forward” on problems. And doesn’t really care about making the $$$.
If he can just advance the interface between computers and his human appendages called lips and finger... we could be on Mars next year.
His contribution to humanity will surpass anyone before, He just does it tirelessly.
No one else does anything
aged poorly. his companies arent that important. even tesla is overpriced for what they provide.
That head snap in the beginning was incredible! I had to rewind it several times.
😂😂😂😂
Elon: "AI will be the single most likely thing to change humnanity"
And Sam took that personally... lol
just realised its sam from openai
Pretty interesting interview. Elon looks pretty young here. Was this really recorded in 2016?
Interesting to watch this in today's context since Elon Musk and Sam are more at beef with each other now
I'm a civil engineer freshman, and while sitting in my intro class, I realized I don't want to do this... It's not the work load or anything, I'm still gonna take all the math and physics classes, I'm just not seeing an interest. I know at some point I'm going to want to do something where having a civil engineer degree would be wonderful, but majority of what I have to sit through just doesn't catch my eye, I know want to propel us forward, I want to help find the next alternate fuel source... I wanna bring about flying cars using magnetism... Things like that, be able to work with my hands inventing. It's like this passion.
Nit?
I'm sorry but the daily work in engineering will always really be a process where you use those simple tools to create complex things. If you don't enjoy any of those tools you will not enjoy engineering. Maybe consider the business side of the development story?
How is it going?
Did you get the degree?

thx for the great interview with Elon. :)
Bandwidth is intentionally low. Click a button and don't hold it down, nothing happens. There is a timer on most buttons.
05:16 very Peter Thiel spectrum comment, and although he's talking about aerospace at 06:45 it sounds exactly like the car industry and energy: just making things slightly better each year, sometimes worse with no real ambition for improvement. He seems to target business areas where the potential accelerative improvements have been spoken of and modeled for years but that dominant companies have such vested interest in stultifying advance that the entire industry doesn't really compete to improve but just makes nominal changes to lend the appearance of something being new enough to be the next year model. Exploiting industries where the major market players implicitly conspire to stifle advance so they don't lose control of market share. I think the phone and internet broadcast industries need Elon's attention.
Right
good interview
00:04 AI and genetics are the key areas to focus on
02:32 Improving the interface between the human brain and digital devices is crucial for the future.
04:54 Being useful and making a difference
07:07 Technology gets better with smart people working on it.
09:27 There is a possibility of establishing a self-sustaining Mars colony in about 10 years.
11:49 Democratization of AI technology is crucial to prevent control by a few individuals or companies.
14:21 Becoming an AI-human symbiote can solve the control problem
16:54 Elon Musk is heavily involved in the engineering and development of SpaceX rockets, the Dragon spacecraft, and Tesla Model 3.
19:06 The current flow speed is very slow at 0.05 meters per second.
Crafted by Merlin AI.

Excellent.. absolutely
I think Elon talks like a robot allot of times but its kinda impressive, he is very good at orchestrating a ton of thoughts very quick and on the fly
Exactly 💯
18:10 what really matters is the machine that builds the machine
How does one really compute the "utility delta" Elon is talking about at 5:13, Is it just the entrepreneur's perception of his product or is it based on the consumer's response about your product?
Both

Bro I thought I had good vocabulary until I hear Elon Musk say "the utility delta compared to the current state of the art"
What does it mean though?
@@asitbaranchakma8921 How useful a certain thing is in fulfilling a goal compared to the standard way of fulfilling said goal.
Sam Altman understood the assignment apparently!
When this interview was published Tesla wasn’t in the best financial space, and you can hear it in his voice.
Lux!✨. Thank You for GOOD INTERVIEW👍
So crazy to watch them talking about openAI 6 years ago and now see what it has become with chatGPT
You are useful and i try to do as like as you .
Elon is such a genius, he is so right about everything he does. We don't need labour unions or safety standards, they just slow down the process. Plus a real genius shouldn't ever sound like he actually knows what he is talking about and Elon masters this. It's a joy to my ears. Gives me hope that if I ever inherit money off the backs of slave labour in South African that I too, a fairly intelligent guy, can make people believe that with a mere business degree that I actually make rockets along with with some of the best engineers in the world. Inspiring...
I have been waiting the last 7 years.
Sam here wanting to be one of the first passangers to Mars, I don't think Elon would want to take him there anymore 😅🥲

Thanks to the epic gentlemen reminding us of the need for ethical AI. In the context of the time lapsed since and current events, very keen to learn how you plan on protecting humanity from a villain to take over, and how you would seek the support of mere citizens in the context of exposure as is🙏

Funny how now these two are rivals
love you elon musk
This is amazing ❤❤✨✨
Regarding "Utility delta compared to the current state of the art x how many people it would affect"
Utility delta = the product's usefulness for 1 person
Current state of the art = current alternative products
People it would affect = people who could benefit from the product
Tesla provided a cheaper way to ride a car, the net profit gained could be multiplied by the number of people who could use such a car (above 21 with a car certificate, countries with income leves above a certain level).
It's a tough calculation, I'm not an economist, so it might be explained in simpler terms :)
