This crowded narrow alley reminds me of Durga Puja festival in Kolkata, India. Thousands & thousands of people flock just like shown in this video in almost all parts of Kolkata. This tragic incident really scares me to think, if it happens in Kolkata, not hundreds but thousands of life will be lost. We must understand life is precious. It must be saved at all cost. I am wondering why there was no crowd control mechanism placed in these narrow alleys? If it was there this sort of incident could have been avoided. RIP 🙏
I heard there's a lot of people get drunk or drink a lot of alcohol that night, so a lot of people probably couldn't think straight or having proper awareness about their sorrounding, our sense of danger also can be dull if we're drunk. Things just escalated quickly from bad to worse and to deadly in minutes. You should able to make quick decision in that kind of situation, just like the cameramen, this guy made smart decision to leave the place asap after he saw the mild crowd surge start getting out if hand, and this decision highly possible saved his life
Korea is no newcomer to big festivals and events. The reason why crowd control was not put in place in this case is Halloween is not recognized as an organized festival or event by any designated party or organization, or at least it's the excuse that the district governor has provided so far, which obviously isn't well received. Usually with festivals, plans and logistics are known in advance so that resources can be allocated appropriately. Halloween doesn't really belong in this category in from government perspective since it's fairly new (less than a decade old probably) and mostly just a ""nightlife" event with fun costumes. There are no parades or trick or treating.
@@iranjackheelson yes thats definitely a poor excuse from governor...if you watch videos of past Halloween celebrations in Itaewon, you can easily see it attracts huge crowds. People go there specifically for foreign celebrations like Halloween. Granted it's never been this packed but the pent up energy from 2 years of covid lock downs is definitely apparent. Not to mention Itaewon police are always understaffed despite knowing how notorious the area is...very poor response on police's part, they should have been much more reactive to the situation.

This is a lesson for all of us. These kinds of crushes always happen the same way. There is some place that is extremely crowded, then, on a downward slope, somebody falls over, leading to a domino effect and the creation of a barrier to further movement. We must learn to recognise this before it happens and find ways to prevent it

This is so tragic. Who would think, "Oh let me go down this alley instead of straight" and think it's going to be the beginning of a slow and painful death??? RIP ... young beautiful lives cut much too short.
I can't believe those people at the bottom were trying to enter there when it was already full. They were preventing the people at the top from leaving. That's why the people at the top started pushing
To be fair, that was a three way alley. The people going up were actually coming out from the train station so they didn't know what was happening. All in all, this was a situation that was totally preventable had crowd barrier was placed there but 2022 happened to be a year when korea just elected their new president and he was a coward who allocate majority of the police to protect him instead on that fateful day hence why you don't see any police on the streets that day. Prior to 2022, there was always tons of police on the streets patrolling on halloween cus of riots fear

I admit that I am divided as to what I think about such a video. I have always looked to this channel as a vehicle of escape to beautiful South Korea. I don’t know whether this video is too soon and inappropriate or if perhaps it’s a service to those who truly want to know what went wrong and how terrible it was. I’m emotional about this because I remember too well the Sewol ferry disaster and how incredulous I was that something as such could happen. I was hopeful that we had learned a lesson and “Never again “, but I was wrong. I’m also emotional because I have a 16 year old niece living in Anyang (southwest of Gangnam). This could easily have been her. Thank God it wasn’t. Maybe one day I will appreciate you for posting this video, but I don’t think that day is today.
You should able to make quick decision in that kind of situation, just like the cameramen, this guy made smart decision to leave the place asap after he saw the mild crowd surge start getting out if hand, and this decision highly possible saved his life
Also the Hajj pilgrimage had a couple crowd disasters that had more than a thousand victims.
@@aubreysong this is EXACTLY why they need crowd control mechanisms in play ❤
It's so eerie knowing that everyone was so happy and having the time of their life before the chaos and the deadly experience

7:00 the death trap starts here.
People at this area won't move.
Curious spectators from 3 different directions want a piece of the action pushed forward. The screaming make them even more curious.
I'm hoping more people could see this.
While you might think most injuries and deaths in such incidents are cause by trampling, a lack of oxygen is often to blame. The crush of the crowd pushes against your chest and makes it hard to breathe. It takes 30 seconds before you lose consciousness, and around about six minutes, you're into compressive or restrictive asphyxia. That's a generally the attributed cause of death - not crushing, but suffocation,” he added. It can also cause head and neck injuries.
-WebMD
This is a lesson for all of us. These kinds of crushes always happen the same way. There is some place that is extremely crowded, then, on a downward slope, somebody falls over, leading to a domino effect and the creation of a barrier to further movement. We must learn to recognise this before it happens and find ways to prevent it
I'm getting goosebumps knowing that some of those people may have not make it out alive:(( condolences to their families and friends:((
You were really there at that alley, wow. Glad you are safe. I feel so sad for those people that did not make it out that alley..

I was station in South Korea back in 1999
I was here on New Years 2000, Itaewon had a lot US Army MP's and SK Police walking around so incidents like this would never happen

You can see the mistakes there why some people choose to go inside the crowd?! 8:58 like I don’t understand if I saw that I will be like no I am not going there anyway RIP
I also think. I probably wouldn't walk into a crowd like that. But when we are young and already in a place, we usually only think about living life, we never think about the negative consequences
That's what I was thinking, I know it's a party/celebration but have some common sense, these types of crowds barely end well
Yeah, like if you enter you know you cant escape easily.
@@osen9881 But how to party in such a crowd when you can hardly move. I guess the tragedy just happened coz people didn't even think that they're overcrowding the place more and more. Very strange that those people really didn't even think about it. Only a few people could sense the danger and walked away like the OP.
Hi, I am working on a documentary on the event. Can I show part of your video with credit and link to your channel?
The management in these areas were below zero. They didn't even take precautions. The area is so narrow why didn't they do assume scenarios like this so that they could have done something for it to prevent accidents. Now because of their negligence a lot of dreams vanished. A lot of people within the youth. A lot of irreplaceable loved ones. A lot of memories with them.

Itaewon is a very popular celebration place where alot of foreign party
So it is expected to see a huge crowd
@@irneaa I think It was that way because the police mismanaged the event. There should have MUCH more control for such a popular celebration spot. Other than that, I can agree that gathering so many people in one place is indeed dangerous but it could have been handled better.

Biggest question on everyone's mind is how to prevent such chaos again in the future and next year's Halloween.
Common sense could have helped but Security is to blame or lack of security for this event, way too many ppl and that can be seen a mile away. You can see most of them laughing when getting pushed and squished a bit, tho I forget some are drunk so common sense would go out the door. :(
