  • National outrage and political backlash ensued after the tragic sinking of M.V. Sewol, which claimed the lives of more than three hundred passengers, most of whom were students on a school trip, five years ago. Yi Seung-jun's film "In the Absence," an Academy Award nominee for Best Short Subject Documentary, details the tragedy and aftermath.

I remember there being a teacher who guided some of the students to the top of the ship to be saved. But she couldn't help herself. The only one at the fault here is the Captain since he was the first one to get off and he was acting as if he was apart of the students/teachers etc. He didn't help and he told everyone to stay put and wait for help. If he told everyone to try to get out slowly and carefully maybe a lot more of the students would have been saved. But those kids stayed in the ship and didn't even try to get out because they listened to what was said on the speakers and waited for the help to arrive. Students who didn't listen to what was said, got out and got saved.

Only advice you can give to anyone on a sinking ship is:
    1. Don't get trapped inside. Stay outside, stay on top, stay visible for rescuers.
    2. If there's time, find anything you can use to float with/on once the ship has sank.
    3. If you can see land, make your way towards it.

Couldn’t agree more.. even the rescue team confused they didn’t see anybody jump to the water at the beginning.. I know when ship sinking it is dangerous for anybody around the ship, because it will pull water and things around the vessel as they sunk, like strong gravity, but it is much more better than trapped inside and do nothing.

This is heartbreaking on so many levels. That girl who said “only those who disobey the orders usually survive” didn’t know how right she was. They all just sat there and drowned while the captain fled...why weren’t they evacuated??!!!??

@@sk-sy5ji In most Asian culture, adults and elderly are to be respected. You must listen to them as they are seen to be more wise. Since the captain was older and was entrusted, they had hope.

In thier mind, it could be like this:
      They knew nothing bout ship
That captain must know bout his own ship better than us who only know how to pay ticket
moving panickly could make ship center gravity become much worse than it already are
The captain might try to keep us in order
To facilitate for proper & more efficient evacuation process
Rather than mindlessly running through ship like maze & disrupt evacuation
Too bad that captain dicide to panick more than the confused passanger

twice _velvet I believe it’s a cultural thing to respect those older and wiser than you, so when their teachers and staff on board told them not to move, they listened and didn’t move. Still heartbreaking either way

@@jamiek7210 that is just so stupid....the teachers have no common sense AT ALL. Hey kids, the boat is extremely tilted but don't move, it's going to tilt the other way. The amount of stupidity is unbelievable.
