I love that salamanders tend to go home and visit their families whenever possible. Unlike the other legions, they keep their personal link to the rest of humanity. Propably why they care so much about mortals. They don't just get indoctrinated to hell and back to just fight and die for the emporer.
Ultramarines are the only other chapter that I think doesn’t explicitly forbid that kind of contact and also treats normal humans with respect. Not to the degree of Salamanders but still.
"hey lord vulkan, ol' brother jimmy over there found a bunker full of xeno civilians and children, you wanna do the honors?" "I always have time for civilians"
@maltheri9833 you know, youre right, seems like , in my. Memeness i forgot, even my space marine chapter that i am currently building. The frikkin dark angels... i even got the lion XD .. but well...
Probably my favorite story bit of Vulkan was when he was held prisoner in a giant torture maze by Konrad Curze, who said at the end of it was his masterwork thunderhammer that he could use to leave because it had a built-in teleporter in it. After being basically killed repeatedly in the maze Vulkan eventually made it to the end and got his hammer, just for Konrad to come up to say "Lmao psych! The ship's teleporter-proof!" In response Vulkan said "IT'S STILL A HAMMER BITCH!" then proceeded to beat Konrad so fucking brutally he put a hole in the ship and got sucked out.
Vulkan had nothing on but underwear, Curze was in his full Primarch gear AND WEAPONS. With only his bare hand he beat Curze so completely it was hilarious. He also got the power field protecting the warhammer to go down by throwing Curze through the damn force field. That was when Vulkan got the hammer and started dismantling Curze even harder. Something for everyone to remember, only Big E was physically stronger than Vulkan. When people talk about the best duelists and fighters, there is a reason people don't even put Vulkan on the list. Vulkan is strong enough to rip Primarch armor apart with his bare hands! Yes they would hit him a few times but he would tank the hits then get his hands on their weapon or armor, once that happens it is game over. If Vulkan is in his own armor? Oh boy. To put this in perspective, normal Primarch armor is like a Prius compared to Vulkan's Tank. The boy's armor is chunky is what I am saying here. The other Primarchs wouldn't be able to MOVE if they wore Vulkan's armor. However, Vulkan didn't like fighting. He liked CREATING. While so many other Primarchs were in their dick measuring contests, Vulkan was at the forge making something.
I always liked Vulkan for his gentle and kind giant nature. But don't mistake his kindness for weakness, as behind his kindness and compassion is a Wrathful Dragon that will make sure who wronged him or the people he cares about whish they were never born.
Salamanders are amazing. While their character has shifted a bit, even being flanderized to a degree, loved these guys since the old Index Astartes in a White Dwarf and this quote of Vulkan to the Emperor; "Any man who values life over pride is worthy of my service."
@@wernerfuhry Initially Vulkan and the Salamanders were smiths, dedicated and humble, with an emphasis on deliberation and slow to act. They even had - 1 Initiative to reflect this way back in the day. There was an almost dwarfiness to them, sans the grudgin. They weren't vainglorious and did the right thing simply because it was right. In the (2nd I think) war for Armageddon, he humbly ceded command to Dante and even beat the snot out of Marines Malevolent for using refugee camps as lures for Orks and then shelling them. As the editions rolled on and the Horus Heresy got fleshed out, those elements largely remained, but we get this element of kindness or niceness that begins to overshadow the other elements. This is largely due to how Vulkan is being portrayed, true, but it shines onto the Salamanders as well. The right thing became stretched to have elements of suicidal self destructiveness and the ponderousness was reduced. In some cases, it even meme'd itself to where Vulkan will HUG IT OUT with all. I don't want to claim it is a HUGE shift and the new stuff is pretty great (the GLOWING RED EYES AND ONYZ SKIN thing is a smidge odd but whatever), simply saying that Vulkan and his Legion are thought of as the NICE ones, before the HUMBLE ones. TLDR: The initial humility and dedication, while still present, seems to have taken backseat to an idea of them as "nice." Which, I would say, while true, is that they are more "human" than many other Legions.
@@TheBoneZone40kwar crimes against xenos don't exist! Seriously they are purely a human concept and don't applies to other species so burning Elder even little ones is a okay! Also it's a mith that flamethrowers are a war crime again totally okay. only white phosphorus is a bit sus, but all other kinds of fire weapons are fine!
One of the best lore moments for Vulkan didn't even have him in the scene. When the Traitors were invading Terra and Perturabo and Fulgrim were on a ship, Perturabo defended Vulkan when Fulgrim was mocking his perpetual motion device saying he thought Vulkan would be too busy making weapons to have any sense of art. Perturabo defends him by saying that many misunderstood Vulkan and that his craftsmanship in ALL aspects was perfect.
I got turned onto them because they seemed like the closest thing to “the good guys” the space marines have and they seem like they’ve actually got brains in their heads more than 1/4 the time, and they’re actually competent and really embody the “no better freind, no worse enemy” cliche
What's the obsession with "THE GOOD GUYS" in 40k? The imperium is in all, good for humans. The eldar is good for the eldar, same for tau. Tau will rule you, not you them.
@@jarlathquinn2628 you know, you’re not wrong. I just like the dragons, flamethrowers, and green more than the yellow of the lamenters. I don’t think theres anything wrong with them per say, they’re just not for me I guess
@@tarektechmarine8209 The obsession exists because there are no true "good guys" in 40k, and the imperium is most definitely not all good for humans. Everybody is out for everyone else's asses, and in the grim darkness of the far future, there is no damn chill to be had.
@@candle_eatist The thing is anyone that isn't a tourist to the hobby will know what seeing a chaos incursion does, especially if Grey knights have to get involved, we ALL know it would be worse if the people where just left alone after, We all KNOW this, people act as if it's evil while the knights are trying to stop anything from going wrong(not that it won't just less chance). I like their dragon aesthetic and their volunteer-at-the-animal-shelter vibe. I also enjoy when a creep mistakes their kindness for weakness, just before they get turned into paste. De-lightful.
I love that in his primarch book, Vulcan is almost brought to tears in front of his terminator guard when his invasion of a planet to liberate it from the Eldar, there was a body of a little girl being carried off by a member of the Imperial army. He describes it as if he would have believed that she would have been asleep she looked so peaceful, if not for the massive amount of blood soaked into her dress. Primarch Vulcan is the embodiment of the heart and soul of Mankind made manifest, I truly hope they bring him back for 10th, that is one of my few wishes for this new edition.
Imperium has been on full mobilization for 12K years at this point...and they still get to take it easy with their human families! "Yeah little Timmy, that 9ft tall hunk of pure muscles is daddy's little brother and he brought you this mini flamer for your birthday!"

A segment from The Horus Heresy - Sons of the Forge by Nick Kyme Sons of Horus are regrouping and resupplying after a recent skirmish with a Salamander patrol Rayko Solomus had left the pit and was sitting on a ammo crate looking out of the battlements of the north wall. He saw the city ruins on the decaying horizon and found himself unmoved. As he only half-heard the menials toiling below and behind him Solomus wondered how long he has been this way.. dead inside. The rifted feeling, only when he held the torturer's knife, did a moat of true emotion return... and even that had been denied to him. The mechanicum emissary had the drake now. "He did not scream?" asked Nevok. Stopping to regard Solomus as he loaded a fresh shell into his weapons clip. "Hmm they certainly can take pain" Nevok stood sentry, waiting for the Salamanders to come. Sons of Horus stood at arms now, bolters at the ready, a squad of heavy weapons with their sights trained on the skies. Their subterfuge, no longer any use to them. They would fight the Salamanders in open battle. They were bloodied though, a row of dead lay in a makeshift apothecarian, waiting for rank to remove their prodgynoids. Even the survivors had burned and scorched armor. S: "They are born into it..." said Solomus. "..unto fire and death" N: Nevok nodded as he slipped in another bolt shell. "Have you seen their bodies? His scars had scars.." S: Solomus drew his knife, admiring the sharpness of the blade. "He killed Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.." he said, counting the legionaries one at the time on his gauntleted fingers. " ..at the same time. He fought them, three against one!" N: Nevok laughed as he slammed his clip back into his boltgun. "I seriously doubt that! The Drake was a fighter, anyone who is legion could see that, BUT ALL THREE?" He shook his head and scoffed. "Ezremas alone would have gutted him! These drakes are warm blooded, but they are not like us. They're weak!" VK: "He did it!" said a voice from behind them. Vosto Kurnan made his way onto the battlements via a metal stair that creaked under his armored weight. "I saw him" he added matter of factly, coming to stand beside the other legionaries. N: "Then why did you not intervene?!" said Nevok. VK: "They done themselves enough dishonor without my defeat of the drake making it worse." he said.. "..besides I hated Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.." N: "You hate everyone brother captain.." VK: "Hmph, true.." Kurnan said lightly and looked descant at Nevok. "But I reserve a special hatred for some. And they aren't weak..." he added. "You never served on Istvan V. You never saw them fight." N: Nevok looked at them both, nonplussed.. "What!? That was butchery, not service!" VK: Kurnan drew close. Nevok had his bolter by his side and fully loaded "We HAD them brother... The Ravens were abroad, guerilla fighting even then. The Gorgon and his warriors.. well they were hellbent on Fulgrim. But we had the drakes, surrounded, outnumbered, at the mercy of the high ground and our entrenched artillery. You should have seen the Iron Warriors pummel them.." he shook his head as if remembering the events he was describing in vivid detail. "Any other foe would have died and died fast, and they did..." he said. His voice grew low and menacing "But those drakes refused to yield. They fought even as the bombs rained and their brethren fell in droves. Even when the Gorgon died and when the Lord of Drakes fell soon after.. and when the raven fled they kept on... ..and on. Some had lost limbs, others were impaled or blind. Wounded beyond any reasonable capacity to function... ..even for legionaries..." Kurnan backed off, but his eyes still burned into Nevok's through his retinal lenses. "I heard it said that, ..when you kill one of Guilliman's sons, you make sure he is dead. Vulcan's sons... ..well they just don't die at all..."
got a goose bump reading that, i just started liking w40k. i like the colour green, so naturally i like orks and recently discovered salamanders legion. i think it speaks to me, i personally would happily fight (from orks enthusiasm) to protect other (salamanders)
I like their dichotomy/rivalry with the Night Lords. How despite being the most morally sound legion, they still had a higher body count than a legion of scumbags. Best shown when Kurze tricked Vulkan into killing an Eldar child which kickstarted a chain of events that led to Vulkan reluctantly razing a civilization to the ground. Vulkan paid Conrad back in blood though during the Heresy
The biggest thing I love about Vulcan and the Salamander is when they are pushed too far and do something morally inexcusable, they are legit fucking disgusted with themselves and it’s instantaneous too. “WHAT HAVE I DONE??!” They are legit hero’s in a universe made to break heroes. Yet they haven’t broken. They continue to fight on they burn they are a eternal if small light against the constantly growing and unending grimdarkness of the universe. 12 outa10 good boys.
@@yaelz6043 I mean that's like saying the Drukhari only do what they do to survive. True, but totally sidesteps the fact they also *get off on it* and would do it regardless. 😂

A core part of why Segmentum Pacifica is so chill is because the Salamanders call it home. They didn't hammer out a giant efficient empire like the Ultramarines, they didn't drive at the Moon, howling away, like the Space Wolves, they just showed up, removed problems, then found out what CAUSED those problems, rooted it out, and made everything better. They took planets that were knocked down, picked them up, and helped build them back, because it was the right thing to do and, in the process, prevented the backlash and rage that otherwise would have existed. They are, in short, the Marshall Plan made manifest, and they're just the goodest of boys.
The fact that Vulkan is the most wholesome character in the entire setting, despite having been through the most crap of any character in the entire setting (barring perhaps Golden-Throne-Emperor), is truly a marvel.
@@nokkz7307 While the Emperor may not have actually died as many times as Vulkan, the Emperor has been in a constant state of deathrattle torment counteracting his Perpetual regeneration for over 10,000 years. I would say that outclasses Vulkan’s suffering. Even if not by much.
@@jamesf3871tbh. I think him witnessing and losing his beloved sons on istvaan would be almost equal to the suffering that big E is going trough. I mean he loves humans to a fault. And his sons even more. No imagine him being forced to watch them get slaughtered and be unable to change anything even if he did all in his power. I mean. They needed to NUKE him on istvaan to debilitate him. Else I doubt anyone would have been able to stop him. And i find it funny that ferrus was actually 1 head taller than Vulkan. "Your beacon won't work. This chamber is teleport-shielded. Nothing goes in or out except through that gate behind you." Still trembling with the aftershocks of absorbing the energy shield, Curze managed to stand. "Did you think you had broken me, brother? Did you believe you have tricked me into letting you escape?" He grinned. "Hope is cruel, isn't it? Yours was false Vulkan." "You're right," I [Vulkan] conceded, holding up Dawnbringer so he could see it. "I fashioned it as a teleporter, a means to escape even a prison such as this. I counted on you leading me here, on you needing to face me one last time. It seems I was fooled into thinking you hadn't planned for this." I lowered the weapon and let the weight of its head pull the haft down until my hand was wrapped around the very end of the grip. "But you're forgetting one thing...." Curze leaned in, as if eager to hear my words. He believed that he had me, that I would never escape this trap. He was wrong. "What's that, brother?" "It's also a hammer." The blow caught him across the chin, a savage upswing that took Curze off his feet and put him on the ground again with the sheer force of the impact.
Salamanders were my absolute favourite back when I first picked up Warhammer. I think I just have a thing for marines who go against the grain of what space marines usually are, and share a reptilian aesthetic. Case in point I am currently working on an Alpha Legion Kill Team. But in all seriousness, If there was another Primarch to come back into the setting, I really hope they don't skip out on Vulkan.
For real. I hope Vulkan comes back after traveling the entire universe, much like the other primarchs, changed but still the same. He has also been struck with the now infamous “Ultradepression” but he still continues on helping where he can but feeling helpless in his efforts to make a difference because of how fucked the Galaxy is. He feels like the weight of it all crushing his shoulders, and his inability to get back to his sons makes him more anxious. Once he finally reunites with his sons should be an epic “VULKAN LIVES” *stomp stomp* moment but its undercut by the air surrounding Vulkan as he quietly goes to his forge to forge in silence.
is this a question?@@iforgor8271 because if it is I think the ones who have gotten the most silly in 40k is Abaddon the Despoiler. He got too silly and ended up blowing up Cadia :(
“I did not hear a ******* bell” had me rolling. And yeah as a rather chill kinda guy I think the salamanders is the chapter for me but I wasn’t sure I’d be the kinda guy to roll with flamers. Then I ran into a black widow in my backyard and instantly reached for my plumbing blow torch. Stupid baby tyranids they shall be cleansed with righteous flame.
I like the salamders for their kindness, it's good to see that even among space marines it is possible to have an element of humanity. Protecting people, visiting their families, the hugs. It is oddly heartwarming for 40K.
As a fun side project I picked up a chaplain of the slamanders. I painted a 5 man squad and tested out doing flame patterns on the armor and even threw an old razorback into the group. They kind of became a centerpiece, I never played them, but I loved showing them off. I got to use different greens and made the lenses yellow. It was a nice break from painting my Ultramarines and World Eaters. Fun project, learned a lot. I guess it was fair to say that from the beginning...I really liked the Salamanders.
If Guilliman represents the head (the tactical, logistical part) of the empire & Lionel Johnson is the might of the empire, then Vulkan is the heart of the empire. He's the reminder of what space marines can & should be to the regular people of the universe. I always liked this way of thinking about Vulkan's place among the other Primarchs. Of course he's probably not coming back any time soon in the lore because he's just the "nice guy" among a bunch of guys really good at killing things in a universe unironically called grimdark & had an offscreen death. I can hope though. "It's also a hammer" needs to be the Salamanders battle cry.
I love my small little salamander army. I mainly chose them for the lore of them being really kind and just kinda humane in comparison to other chapters and also their craftsman skills. I also love the paint scheme as I love green and black. I just love the little green goobers that scorch things into oblivion :)
I think in Europe, the word "salamander" is mostly associated with the small lizard-like animals you've shown, the same group that the axolotls belong to. The most "iconic" species are the ones that are jet-black with a sort of yellow "camo" spots. Very pretty - and you can see the same color pattern on some of the early Salamander marine armor patterns. The specific species is called the Fire Salamander in English (_Salamander_ _salamander_ is the scientific name*). Supposedly, they're associated with fire in the European folklore, because - as you mentioned - they love to hang out in and under old logs. So when people collected those logs and threw them into fire, a bunch of little slimy guys would pop out and started running for their life. "They must be born of fire!" the people concluded, with the usual insight. * the IRL salamanders seem to suffer from the same naming woes that the 40k Space Wolves and Blood Angels do.
As a salamander, I believe in the saying, "If the emperor gave us the power to fight, why not use it to protect the others?". I'm a big green lover and Salamanders called to me so fast when I was learning the lores. :) Great video.
I frequent one GW store and the Salamander players just keep increasing in numbers. Most are fairly chill dudes, 9/10 they're ex-players looking to get back in and want to play some 'good guys'. Always a new Dad looking for a hobby to do with his kids.
Salamanders be like "Let's enter battle without an exit strategy" [lock & load] "For the civilians!" then halo jumps from orbital carrier.. . . . . . . . as the descent begins, "Tell my Wife I'll home in time for dinner and helping the kids with their homeworkkkkkkkkkkkk."
I’ve been playing Salamander’s for over a year and ngl everything about them rocks. The fire is awesome The colours are awesome Their lore is awesome too They are my first army and I’m really excited to use them in 10th.
I play Salamanders for the express reason of push come to shove, even in a universe as dark as this, I wish I had the power and force of will to stand up for the little guy. It feels weird to actually say this but I see a lot of what I hope others see in me about every good story I see about the salamanders. I am a teacher who loves to create, the patience and fierce protection I have for those I am in charge over is something I would say is up their but not endless. Sallies are my second army and have ballooned into being a large thing for me, but from the moment I heard their lore I knew eventually I'd want some because there's at least a bit of hope in a dark world as long as they have the torch to hold it aloft. Everyone who plays 40k and their tastes, personality quirks, and their qualities all come out in their armies in ways that are great. I play Necrons striving for apotheosis to save their people, Salamanders defending humanity from the evils of the new night befalling the universe, Space Wolves for the honor and the challenge of each fight, Crimson Fists for how the life if all needs defending when its in our power to do so, and Minotaurs for the strength of unified purpose. Each army I play I have a lore reason to do so and it follows part of me. Its weird to introspect for it, but it allows me to see what draws everyone to their army for those who love it for the long haul.
I love the Salamanders, they’re one of my favorite Legions. From their dragon aesthetic to their blacksmithing creed to their wholesome vibes just makes a unique and cool chapter. One thing though I find is interesting is, while Vulkan is larger than most other of his brothers, Ferrus Manus is described to be a head taller in a book in the Horus Heresy.
I think the biggest factor when it comes to how chill Salamanders players are is that their most aggressively awesome aspect- fire- has an even more aggressive outlet in the Sisters of Battle.
Salamanders were the first legion/chapter I got into mostly due to the dragon/blacksmith vibe. Great for kitbashing aos parts (flames, chains, etc) and hand making master craft weapons and armor, plus flaying dollar store dinosaurs for tattered flaps of scales is also fun
I had heard this meme a lot. Honestly it comes off kinda rough after reading the book. The Night Lords and Salamanders were working on trying to both reconquer the planet from the Eldar Exodites, and re educate the human population who worshipped the Xenos. Kurze hated how Vulkan was succeeding with kindness where he failed with being an edge lord. So he decided to be petty. He deliberately found the Eldar Child training to be a farseer and through his terror tactics turned her into a Psychic WMD rampaging through the Human settlement. Vulkan had to kill the child to save the population and seeing it was only a child, he felt remorse and regret. Konrad kurze was pointing and laughing like Nelson Muntz at how soft Vulkan was being.
@@Hewhospritesable Thank you for sharing this lore. I was not aware of all of the context surrounding that event and that all completely changes the whole story. And that boys and girls is how media narratives work lmao
There are 3 unforgivable atrocities in 40k: Istvan 3, Istvan 5 and every single book covering the Salamanders. The authors should have been given to the Haemonculi as test subjects.
I love the salamanders and they been one of the reasons I got into the lore so heavily learning about them, between them actually living with their families when returning home, their rituals and philosophy, and just got interesting characters I really wish they got more books and stories to show how cool they are.
As Salamanders fan all I ask is that we get progression to Forge Father He'stan's story with his hunt for Vulkan's relics. That's it, that's all I ask cause lore wise they're always treated well and I'm glad that many authors don't overhype them like they do other chapters. This really makes the Salamanders feel more believable.
East coast represent. Whenever I think of salamanders I can only think of the ones hiding under rocks. Legitimately didn’t know a “salamander” was also the name of a mythical beast until recently.
More myths about the properties of real salamanders than a separate magical species, I think. I've heard they liked to nest in damp logs, and sometimes someone would pick up a log they were in and throw it in the fire, leading the salamander to wake up and get the hell out of there in a manner that appeared to be a creature being born from the flames.
My love for them honestly comes from their humanity and just how much it they have, compared to the rest of the imperium. Even though they basically became "demi-gods" after being selected for the Space Marine procedure, they were "mortal" once and they understand the value of and how precious a mortal life is; so unlike alot of other chapters their egos arent inflated
Legend says the reason the primarchs bones were even more reinforced then even your avarge space marines is not to hold up against enemy blows, it was just incase Vulcan gave them a bone crunching bear hug
I feel like its important to note that a key ingredient for the salamanders being the way they are is the fact that they get to live lives outside of their service to the chapter they get to have families, have hobbies, have civilian jobs, and that can do a lot for the mentality and soul for a genetically modified and psychologically conditioned killing machine theyre able to look upon imperial citizens with love and respect and value because they get to live like them other marines afaik never ever stop being killing machines for even a moment thats all they are all they ever know they probably dont even know HOW to be kind even if they wanted to their idea of kindness and goodness is just fighting the good fight and protecting the imperium from its many enemies
At last, my boys! And yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on the head for why I love these guys. I adore flame weapons in games, I think dragons are just sweet, I like how they are just so physically big and I like that there’s a legion that embraces its humanity in order to protect others. Really great stuff, definitely going to grab some flamer units and paint them up as these guys soon.
I 100% am a Salamander stan because of their kindness. I've heard others say "I like this faction because they're vampires in space", or "...they're Vikings in space". Then I see the Salamanders and go, these guys are super nice and care about the people. I vibe with that.
Salamander Uncle visiting his newborn nephew "Can the young one speak?" His Cousin "She can say mum and dad now" Salamander "Great" *few moments later "Can you say Emperor's phosphorus? Holy Napalm? "
This was ordained by the Emperor, they were an experimental legion probably made for Radioactive and disgustingly hot environments and also being able to handle such weapons. Perhaps their emotional pedigree comes from the fact that they also need to be good people in order to wield terrible weapons and understand when to use them.
@@TheRedMan77 He said they kill people in the worst way out of everyone, I corrected that probably the worst out of the loyalists but its definitely not worse than what the Night Lords, Emperors Children, Word Bearers, death guard or basically any of the traitors would do to you
They are the single faction that i just identify with the most in all of 40k. I remember being 10 and looking through my 5th edition space marine codex and thinking how cool they are. Years later, i have got back into the hobby about 8 months ago and have slowly started my army of green huggy bois.
pariah nexus is one of my all time favorite shows out there because we get to see a salamander operate. the salamanders has honestly become my favorite legion out there
I... I think I finally found a Chapter I can vibe with. Whenever friends would try to get me into Warhammer 40K, none of the chapters really sat right with me for one reason or another.
I think it’s called ‘His Angels’ but there is a comic that got me into painting my salamanders of a space marine that fails to save a family from a plague marine and is just beside himself to the point of walking into the pyre to let go of the little girl’s space marine doll, it’s probably my favorite piece of fan art for warhammer out there
1:46 I almost laughed out my dinner. Been waiting for this one. Salamanders are my fav. Their aesthetic, FIRE, crafters, FIRE, getting to be a general bro, MORE FIRE. I need to read more on there lore though.
I fucking love these dudes. In the sea that is the "Grimdark everything is fucked up" world of 40K, its good to know these is a section of the empire that is still good and cares about Citizens.
Salamanders were never supposed to justify anything any other Space Marines do. They're supposed to be the contrast point. The one unironically good chapter to make sure people understand the satire of all the others. They're the superheroes trying to help regular people, while the rest of the Imperial authorities (including all the other chapters and especially the ecclesiarchy and inquisition) are the anti-heroes and villains, oppressing civilians and pulling their strings or just mass murdering them.
When I was trying to decide which faction to get into for my Space Marines I started picking up in various value boxes, none of the others sang to me quite like the Salamanders did. Being some of the closest things to "good guys" there are in a universe of evil and death was really neat. It's fun being the bad guys sometimes, but when almost everything out there is "bad", the exception to the rule is also refreshing and interesting. Only downside is now I'm running low on green paint cuz my ORKS NEED DA GREEN TOO.
my favorite legion, have been waiting for you to get to them. now i will need you to do gray knights! the only downside to wanting to collect them as an army is, i am underwhelmed with options for making them look as different from the rest of the space marines as their lore feels. it's driven me down the road of "proxy minis" something fierce.
Vulkan in my head is essentially Titan from FF 15 Edit: also yeah them being named after irl the smallest f**king creature ever and having the largest primarch is hilarious
Salamanders are related to Dragons in European folklore because they wouls often be seen crawling out of logs as they were being burned; hence people thought they spawned from the fires
Salamanders were my first army. I love their take on human supremacy, where they actually compassionately value human life while burning traitors and xenos alive. Also flame throwers are awesome and I love the paint scheme. Treating people with respect and striving for fun rather than victory at my opponents expense has always been important to me (though I still try to win). I'm more likely to add something to my army because it's fluffy and fun, and I like to build a narrative with my opponent.
Salamanders are cool, I like the duality of caring protectors that use massive flamethrowers. Could also be that I like green (my other army is Orks) or that Im closet pyromaniac 😅
I more of an Ork fan, but I like the Salamanders of the space marines. It might be that I'm a little of a fire bug, but I like the trope of the gentle giant. We need more big, friendly, dangerous men in the setting if you ask me.
Here is what I will say I had LOTS of horrid experiences in my area, I think my area just might be a horrid area. But not one person I have met played Salamanders. So... I guess take that as confirmation?
I have a fun anecdote where one person posted on both the black templar subreddit and salamander's on which to choose. The Salamanders provided a list of valid reasons one might enjoy them, the BT said something along the lines of, "YOU SHOULDN'T NEED CONVINCING TO SERVE IN THE GLORIOUS CRUSADE, OR YOU CAN GO SERVE WITH THE WEAK GRANNY SMITH MARINES"
I've always loved Salamders and hello Arthur. Your videos are pretty cool. Thanks for making them. Also, imagine fem-astartes salamanders. You know their snu-snu would be cuddles based.
I'm out in New Hampshire in the North East US. We also have Salamanders and Newts and such. Same critter comes to mind before I have to remind myself that Salamanders are also fire lizards. Also as a fellow Scot-descendant, I felt that beach comment lmao.
I to love the jooly green giants. Fun fact, they tend to be larger than marines of other chapters. Sure their huggable nature is memed on a lot, like a lot a lot. But I've never seen any marines go from 1 to 100 on the murder you with extreme prodigious scale as fast as the green boys. The thing people forget is, their all about protecting humanity. And the moment, the second you betray humanity they are as ruthless and blood thrusty as a blood angel fallen to the black rage And they have a special hate Bonner for the eldar. Especially the dark elder
I'm from argentina, and although salamanders are also the same animals for us, we also use the same word for those old forge-like furnaces made of iron where people used to cook things or melt metals. Besides that, a salamander is a massive metallurgy furnace used for melting metals. That's what I believe their name reffers to, it seems more fitting than the amphibians lmao.
Lo mas probable es que se llamen así por la salamandra de fuego de la mitología medieval pero tu teoría está buena, concuerda con con la onda pirómana de la legión. Casi escribo todo esto en inglés
I've been running salamander for a while now and i honestly love every aspect of them. What honestly drew me to them was how unique they were; the obsidian black skin with glowing red eyes, their wholesome, humble philosophies, keeping their connection to humanity and treating citizens like they would any other battle brother. To me, the salamanders seem to be the closest to "good guys" you can get in the 40k universe. Their lore is super rich and super fascinating, especially since every salamander astartes is a master craftsman and regularly return to Nocturne to spend time and help their families and communities. Overall, they're some pretty swell dudes
"and treating citizens like they would any other battle brother." Not entirely true. I am pretty sure Brother Tsu'gan has problems with civilians for being weak, as it costs the Salamanders in countless lives to protect them. However, despite his grievances, he still steps up and performs his duty - mainly for his Brothers though.
@@apropercuppa8612 I haven't read about Tsu'gan, but you're absolutely right. However, just like any organization with a core set of philosophies, you're going to have people that aren't 100% indoctrinated, or people that are who then stray from the path. I think it makes them more human though; not every organization is going to have total adherence throughout it's ranks, even the Emperor's Angels of Death, you're going to have onesies and twosies that don't fit the mold perfectly, but for the vast majority of the salamanders, they truly believe in their teachings and take them to heart.
@@FlacidRob This is true. Read Firedrake. He's one of the characters mentioned frequently, and often is vocal about his discordance with helping the civilians. Also, as you mentioned, there are a small handful of Sally's that abandoned their Brothers to join up with some Dark Eldar guy.
“Mister Green Space soldier…. I lost my dog during the fight, can you-“ *Salamander with glowing eyes having ran around the entire planet 5 times already looking for the dog* “I should run around it 15 more times, just to make sure.”
My favorite official chapters are the Lamenters and the Salamanders love the wholesome flamethrower boys what truly one me over for them (aside from my pyromania) was a comic called “His Angels” which I found cause 56 scratch dubbed it and yes I do cry a bit everytime I go watch it “I…… am here now”
"These are my people. I will not yield." Is a short line from the Salamanders book I read some 20 years ago. The Salamanders still think of themselves as humans and the protectors of the weak. Vulcan and his children are the only faction worthy of admiration in the Imperium, in my opinion.
To fight and die for the emperor is to help humanity win, a few thousand 'casualties' are nothing compared to entire planets that marines protect.

And despite everything Konrad did to Vulkan. Vulkan still chose not kill Curze because he was still his brother
😂😂 bro what
Vulkan had nothing on but underwear, Curze was in his full Primarch gear AND WEAPONS.
@@Nempo13 Did now know that, I'm not too in depth on 40k lore, but I never knew Vulkan was so physically imposing.
Salamanders are amazing. While their character has shifted a bit, even being flanderized to a degree, loved these guys since the old Index Astartes in a White Dwarf and this quote of Vulkan to the Emperor; "Any man who values life over pride is worthy of my service."
How, or in what way was there character shifted?

A segment from The Horus Heresy - Sons of the Forge by Nick Kyme
Sons of Horus are regrouping and resupplying after a recent skirmish with a Salamander patrol
Rayko Solomus had left the pit and was sitting on a ammo crate looking out of the battlements of the north wall.
"Hmm they certainly can take pain"
Nevok stood sentry, waiting for the Salamanders to come.
"..unto fire and death"
N: Nevok nodded as he slipped in another bolt shell. "Have you seen their bodies? His scars had scars.."
S: Solomus drew his knife, admiring the sharpness of the blade. "He killed Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.." he said, counting the legionaries one at the time on his gauntleted fingers. " ..at the same time. He fought them, three against one!"
N: Nevok laughed as he slammed his clip back into his boltgun. "I seriously doubt that! The Drake was a fighter, anyone who is legion could see that, BUT ALL THREE?"
He shook his head and scoffed. "Ezremas alone would have gutted him! These drakes are warm blooded, but they are not like us. They're weak!"
VK: "He did it!" said a voice from behind them.
"..besides I hated Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.."
N: "You hate everyone brother captain.."
VK: "Hmph, true.." Kurnan said lightly and looked descant at Nevok. "But I reserve a special hatred for some. And they aren't weak..." he added. "You never served on Istvan V. You never saw them fight."
N: Nevok looked at them both, nonplussed.. "What!? That was butchery, not service!"
VK: Kurnan drew close.

I love this comment
There are many interesting things that COULD be done with bringing Vulkan back, but I wouldn't place any faith in GW doing so.

Propably wore thicker soles on his armor to look taller.🤣
Fulgrim: not any more :D
@@kingdragong-rh6dl HA! Good one
Sadly. That fact about Ferrus has changed
@@eneram8846 Has it? When and in what book?

Konrad kurze was pointing and laughing like Nelson Muntz at how soft Vulkan was being.
damn Konrad's a Dickhead
@@HewhospritesableWell, that seems more in character for both of them than I previously knew.
@@Hewhospritesable Thank you for sharing this lore. I was not aware of all of the context surrounding that event and that all completely changes the whole story.
And that boys and girls is how media narratives work lmao
@@Hewhospritesable are you defending the xeno? Stay right there while I notify an inquisitor.
@5:25 best line on youtube, gotta protect the little fellas!
8:30 "Vulkan is probably the most wrathful of the Primarchs" and remorseful, he never forgave himself for that Eldar child.
That's what I love about them, Vulcan felt remose about a xeno, which other imperial character would feel bad about killing a xeno?
@dimsum3329 Kanye Voice "Cato Sicarius hates the T'au"
East coast represent. Whenever I think of salamanders I can only think of the ones hiding under rocks. Legitimately didn’t know a “salamander” was also the name of a mythical beast until recently.
More myths about the properties of real salamanders than a separate magical species, I think. I've heard they liked to nest in damp logs, and sometimes someone would pick up a log they were in and throw it in the fire, leading the salamander to wake up and get the hell out of there in a manner that appeared to be a creature being born from the flames.
@@RorikH now that’s a comical origin story
Here in the Midwest we have blue tailed skinks and salamanders in some of the rivers.
I just love how they're all about protecting human lives rather than seeking glory, in a universe this dark its just a nice breath of fresh air
Moral of the story with Salamanders: don't let the "teddy" part make you forget the "bear" part.
I feel like its important to note that a key ingredient for the salamanders being the way they are is the fact that they get to live lives outside of their service to the chapter
they get to have families, have hobbies, have civilian jobs, and that can do a lot for the mentality and soul for a genetically modified and psychologically conditioned killing machine
theyre able to look upon imperial citizens with love and respect and value because they get to live like them
other marines afaik never ever stop being killing machines for even a moment
thats all they are all they ever know
they probably dont even know HOW to be kind even if they wanted to
their idea of kindness and goodness is just fighting the good fight and protecting the imperium from its many enemies
Fun fact: The Salamanders hate the Marines Malevolent chapter due to their wilful disregard for civilian casualties.
Salamander Uncle visiting his newborn nephew
"Can the young one speak?"
His Cousin "She can say mum and dad now"

I think it's funny the most chill legion gives their enemies the worst possible way to die. That's how I think about the Salamanders.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Worst out of the loyalists.
This was ordained by the Emperor, they were an experimental legion probably made for Radioactive and disgustingly hot environments and also being able to handle such weapons. Perhaps their emotional pedigree comes from the fact that they also need to be good people in order to wield terrible weapons and understand when to use them.
@@joesheridan9451 Come again?
@@TheRedMan77 He said they kill people in the worst way out of everyone, I corrected that probably the worst out of the loyalists but its definitely not worse than what the Night Lords, Emperors Children, Word Bearers, death guard or basically any of the traitors would do to you
@@joesheridan9451 Ahh yeah. Nah, Salamander Flamers kill you pretty quick if your just an average dude.
They are the single faction that i just identify with the most in all of 40k. I remember being 10 and looking through my 5th edition space marine codex and thinking how cool they are. Years later, i have got back into the hobby about 8 months ago and have slowly started my army of green huggy bois.
pariah nexus is one of my all time favorite shows out there because we get to see a salamander operate. the salamanders has honestly become my favorite legion out there
I like wholesome factions in 40K. It contrasts the rest of the setting and prevents it from being monotone grimdark.
I... I think I finally found a Chapter I can vibe with. Whenever friends would try to get me into Warhammer 40K, none of the chapters really sat right with me for one reason or another.
“I did not hear a f$&@ing bell” has me dead.
I am a salamander player and I have been told. I'm fairly chill so I appreciate the point out. And I'll give you a digital high five.
Man I should not had watched this video. I am halfway done painting my army to be Lamenters and now I'm sitting here reconsidering my choices.
Only downside is now I'm running low on green paint cuz my ORKS NEED DA GREEN TOO.
my favorite legion, have been waiting for you to get to them. now i will need you to do gray knights! the only downside to wanting to collect them as an army is, i am underwhelmed with options for making them look as different from the rest of the space marines as their lore feels. it's driven me down the road of "proxy minis" something fierce.
i'm with you on what Salamaders look like, i'm east coast and that's the first thing i think of when i hear the name Salamanders.
Vulkan in my head is essentially Titan from FF 15
Edit: also yeah them being named after irl the smallest f**king creature ever and having the largest primarch is hilarious
The Salamanders are the faction that every 40k fan feels bad for when they take a beating.
Salamanders are related to Dragons in European folklore because they wouls often be seen crawling out of logs as they were being burned; hence people thought they spawned from the fires
Its a nice touch they have far more contact with the people of their homeworld, teaching crafts and being visible examples of the Emperors might.
"It's also a hammer." Love this quote.
Salamanders are cool, I like the duality of caring protectors that use massive flamethrowers.
Could also be that I like green (my other army is Orks) or that Im closet pyromaniac 😅
The salamanders and space wolves are the good guy space marines who are still basically human
I more of an Ork fan, but I like the Salamanders of the space marines. It might be that I'm a little of a fire bug, but I like the trope of the gentle giant. We need more big, friendly, dangerous men in the setting if you ask me.
We have Salamanders in America, I haven't met anyone who thinks of "dragons" when someone says "salamanders"
As someone who absolutely loves the salamanders.... Yes
How are u in the past watching this?
2:22 “condgladuraisins” my new favorite word
Here is what I will say I had LOTS of horrid experiences in my area, I think my area just might be a horrid area. But not one person I have met played Salamanders. So... I guess take that as confirmation?
Eldar: “I thought we were supposed to be the traumatic event, why are we getting ptsd?!?!”
Salamanders: “Flamer go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr”
I like how they burnt a small elf child.

As a professional, Salamanders simp, unarmed elf children are enemy combatants
I love the Salamanders. These walking chonky tanks being super kind to the populace around them.

Salamanders are the stoners of the Space Marine chapters. Chill, kind and give it all. One love broda.
And the moment, the second you betray humanity they are as ruthless and blood thrusty as a blood angel fallen to the black rage
And they have a special hate Bonner for the eldar.
War crimes with a hug.
"and treating citizens like they would any other battle brother."
Not entirely true.
@@apropercuppa8612 hell yeah, I'm always down for more Geckomen stories. Thanks for the recommendation

My favorite official chapters are the Lamenters and the Salamanders love the wholesome flamethrower boys what truly one me over for them (aside from my pyromania) was a comic called “His Angels” which I found cause 56 scratch dubbed it and yes I do cry a bit everytime I go watch it
“I…… am here now”
"These are my people. I will not yield." Is a short line from the Salamanders book I read some 20 years ago. The Salamanders still think of themselves as humans and the protectors of the weak. Vulcan and his children are the only faction worthy of admiration in the Imperium, in my opinion.
I feel like if the Salamanders and the Ogryns formed one group, the overwhelming wholesomeness would decimate the enemies.
