The Raven Guard aren't edgy, they're angsty. The Night Lords are edgy. Corvus and the XIX's dower demeanor comes from the fact that they're noble souls fighting for good in a setting where all nobility merits is a painful death; along with the hypocrisy of their legion wanting to be liberators but having to fight for the greatest human tyrant in history. As opposed to the Night Lords who do... Night Lord stuff for laughs

That’s not really a noble soul though. Because their actions are still those of tyrants and hypocrites. At least the Blood Angel’s issue is that they are constantly fighting back the desire to rip open the nearest guardsman and use him as a portable drink. Corvus and his lot whine a whole lot about wanting to make things better, but none of them really get around to that properly, besides one single company who just causes chaos by uplifting an even remotely downtrodden population, damn the consequences for them and the entire sector.

I love the ravengaurd because they actually get shit done. As a huge military nerd myself, all of space marine legions are usually aren't vary tactical or realistic in terms of how you fight wars. The ravengaurd actually fight in ways you could actually see being practical aside from the double lighting claw look but hey you can't have everything. They feel more like special forces for astartes then regular marines which I love. The green berets of astartes which is a awesome concept.

I personally love the aesthetics of the Raven Guard, especially the beak helmets. Black is also one of my favorite colors, so there's that. And I like the idea of a more stealthy legion that focuses on guerrilla warfare and hit n run tactics as oppose to the typical space marines charging into battle while autistically screeching "FOR THE EMPEROR". From a lore standpoint I also love how they'll often prioritize rescuing civilians above all, while also remaining one of the more humble chapters despite their accomplishments. At the end of the day though, if we can have pretty boy vampires (Blood Angels) and edgy Batman wannabes (Night Lords) then we can have goths in power armor.

    40k vet here:
The thing with Raven Guard is the literal emo aesthetic didn't really exist until the Primaris upgrade sprue, which seemed like a literal joke.
Raven Guard have clear gothic elements (literally the Raven by Edgar Allen Poe is kind of the visual and grim-dark theme they inherited), you can argue being pale with dark hair as being literal
"goth" as well - but that was never my view early on. Early on the Raven Guard kind of had this almost Italian vibe to them, with their names being very Italian - thus the dark hair and pale features isn't far off from people of Italy and south-eastern Europe. A couple guys in the heresy novels had south Slavic sounding names which fit this physical aesthetic too.
The chapter are the ambush, assassination, saboteur marines. They had kind of a partisan vibe going, which made sense because Corvus basically led a guerilla war on Deliverance iirc. And again, Yugoslavia, Italy, France, etc, had massive partisan movements (and generally are pale with dark hair as the norm).
To me the gothic vibe was the undertone, an ode to classic horror that gave its influence to 40k as a whole. But Raven Guard are not an army of emos. If anything they are as close to real life U.S Marines, Navy Seals, Spec Ops, as we get. They use infiltration to get close without the enemy knowing, then eviscerate them before they can respond. They use all the tactical gear at their disposal, they are cunning, they are ruthless to their enemies. They ARE the MARINE in SPACE MARINE.
But like many chapters the Raven Guard never had the theme fully hammered down. So different people write or design them in different ways. The Forge World guys did a good job and understood the practical, realistic vision of tactical Space Marines. George Mann wrote a lot of their short stories back in the day, and he made them somber marines, rather than anything close to angsty or emo or whatever. But yes you had guys at GW who knew the emo joke and for whatever reason ran with it to give us the comical heads and names for gear and weapons.
So really it's up to you how you view the Raven Guard. Are they Spec Ops who have a gothic undertone? Or are they Space goths who have a space ops undertone? For me it's always been the former, I don't even recognize the later except as a joke.
If I ever return to Raven Guard you can bet my marines will be militaristic looking with the odd death imagery here and here. Kind of like how US marines frequently wore the Punisher logo in desert storm.

Ravenguard to me epitomise an old phrase i hear tossed around the 40k community from time to time, "a squad of marines can take over an entire planet", and i think the Ravenguard are that in a nutshell. No excessive displays of military might, no ego driven charges into the enemy's frontlines, just a squad of dudes, silently and efficiently dismantling the power structure of a planet without even being seen, with armor strong enough to make killing them a near impossible task for normal humans. Ok Arthur asked for our thoughts so I'm going to gush for a while:
Raven Guard are probably my favorite loyalist chapter. Part of this is admittedly just the fact I like their armor and bird motif, and the nostalgia I have for them from the McNeill Ultramarines series where they're portrayed really well I feel. That being said, they also aren't COMPLETE goth edgelords. Their mindset is actually fairly interesting, and most of their assassination and stealth tactics come from the fact that they don't like killing civilians and innocents and want to minimize casualties. They often attach small units to Imperial Guard or other mortal forces because they want to protect them, and their command structure is pretty loose because each individual marine is expected to make their own tactical decisions, meaning the average Raven Guard marine needs to actually have a functioning brain as well as common sense...which is more than can be said for a lot of chapters. They're honestly a lot like the Salamanders, but significantly more socially awkward so it doesn't come across as easily. I also find it kinda funny that some of them can actively hear the voices of their dead brothers, but instead of being tormented by them the ghosts of their friends generally just offer encouragement.
TL;DR, they have a very edgey exterior but an oddly wholesome interior. Still, whoever did their head sculpts at GW needs to have a serious think about their life choices.

Basically like you said they know there purpose to not only fight off the enemies of man kind but also to “protect” those that don’t have the same strength as them, but they also know that there are times where you have to be cold as iron to finish the job.

I think the benefits of the raven guard like the ultramarines at times are seen in their successors than the main chapter itself. For example the raptors (raven guard successors) are basically Spartans from halo, while the silver templars focus on the more aristocratic and “proper” elements of the ultramarines focusing on duels and more focused warfare (very emperors children of them if I am being honest). I did my waiting, 18 legions of it. The thing about the Ravenguard is that to me at least they're dutiful without ego, they do great deeds and really don't care much if people realise they did it or not which is unusual amongst Space marines, a good example is of course Nikona. Their ability to operate independantly, each company essentially does what it wants and has operational autonomy away from Chapter command and to value the usefulness of that flexibility and pragmatism like you mentioned with the Raptors. Their anti-tyranny sentiments (The whole 6th company is devoted to de-throning tyrants) appeals to me alot and just in general I enjoy the uncoventional warfare (and the mild comedy of 8ft super soldiers being capable of disappearing) Corax is baller as well as primarchs go, his attempts to help his legion only going to ruin is tragic and sets the tone for them nicely I think. I must admit we got a little shafted with the emo heads in the new sculpts but if you look at older ravenguard models, thats not the aesthetic originally (I suspect they were going for a winter-soldier vibe and its just... yeah) I did headswaps on mine to beakies (or for unhelmeted ones I went for other space marine options with more high and tight hair cuts) I paint mine with a leaner aesthetic, tilting more onto that operator vibe. The Heresy stuff is particularly good with the Moritat squads & Mor Deythan. I understand they're not for everyone though and some of the 'woe is me' aspects of the lore are a turn off but I've yet to see a legion with 100% cringless lore. Appreciate all the videos, they've been good to watch. :D even if you think my boys are cringey

I like the idea of the Ravens. A stealthy space marine is terrifying when done right, like a gorilla becoming a martial artist/gymnast. The whole emo/ninja deal doesn’t fit. The idea of a mark of armor built to move faster, quieter at the expense of power and protection is interesting. The idea of an 8+ foot tall, 2000 lb black suit of armor perfectly blending into the shadows is ridiculous. I think it should have been given some sort of chameleon color changing ability which renders it more stealthy yet delicate.

Raven Guard are my favorite chapter because even though I never dressed like one, I was a goth at heart all throughout highschool. Nowadays, I love how fuckin' doofy they are. The First Founding book has a bit in it about how the Raven Guard psychically screen their aspirants and only admit the ones who are 100% pure of heart and dedicated to the principles of freedom and justice, and I think it's the funniest bit of 40k lore I've read all year.
(As for Daemon Corax, I think the "giant bird demon" thing is a bit of fanon; the actual work this comes out of describes him as being perceived by another character as a giant, vaguely bird-shaped silhouette of solid shadow, which really does just sound like an evolution of his whole "Can disappear from mortal eyes like The Shadow" superpower he always had. We have no idea whether he's actually a bird demon or if that's just a spooky projection or something, and won't until GW puts out a mini, which will probably be never.)
Also also, never let it be forgotten that as much as vocal 40k fandom mocks Kayvaan Shrike, his mini is by far the most popular Space Marine mini amongst online 40k women's fan groups.

The aspect of the Ravenguard that stick with me the most is that they’re just built to survive, not via fortifications or personal durability or anything; they’re just trained to make it out of fights alive in a modern feeling conventional way. Also the fact that their geneflaw makes them embody the opposite of what made Corvus so great, which was trust.

imo the point of the Raven Guard is that they do not give a fuck about being honorable or whatever, but about being efficient. And that is why they are the only ones who fight properly: nothing about epic last man stands, nothing about epic charges. If things go wrong, leave. If you have to intervene, be precise. Don't waste resources and use them in the best way. Camo, snipers, guerrilla warfare etc have nothing bad.
But sadly they have all that goth edgy feel. I remember a guy who sculpted Corax at a super high good level (way before the Heresy novels). His Corax was not emo, his Corax was based in North American natives... and was cool as fuck and extremely fitting. Just imagine that for a moment, it just works!

I played Arma 3 for a while due to lack of time to be able to actually get into servers and the impossibility of joining due to timezone constraints (I.E. having to join a mission on sunday-monday midnight on a work week). And as I was by myself, besides melee, I learned how to run solo. Of course, for stealth Arma 3 needs a few tweaks (not enought to NOT get caught, mind you) before you get out there, but besides that I was golden. I could sneak around a whole town of NPCs, kill a specific dude and jumppack/run my way out.
The last mission I ever ran by myself was an intervention between Dark Angels and Night Lords. I tasked myself with providing as much support as possible. The mission would fail if the last Dark Angels marine fell. I sniped Devastator units so that the armor can move forwards and engage theirs, and once the marines made it into town I used the distraction to sneak around the back and start lightning clawing my way through the back till the last marine was dead.
This playstyle feels cool and accurate, and I wish I could've been on an actual Arma 3 server properly to both continue this in a more organized way, and to show the things I learned by myself.

Ravenguard are literally 2000's goths hair reflects this along with the brooding pessimism and recital of Edgar Allen Poe quotes. I play them and love them because they are THE defacto underdogs of the space marines. Despite being shit on and set back after setback during HH and Damocles they continue to thrive with small numbers amounting to huge impact. They help the little man and other Astartes whenever possible and dont if hardly ever get recognition for it. Look to books like Labyrinth of Sorrows, and With Baited Breath to get an idea of this. Then you get other cool shit like the Geld and Soulbound which is all about Shrike gathering a band of RG and their Successors who have Coraxs Wraith Slipping ability to make some super elite Shadow Captains company capable of going on missions not even most of their brothers could accomplish! They are a chapter for anyone who grew up loving Batman, Sam fisher (Splinter Cell), and unironically fucking Raven from teen titans. Oh and on the hair thing can we in all honesty stop??!?! I think Raven Guard can be a lot cooler if they were aesthetically done better both in looks and in lore.
I feel like if we had more exploration and intrigue into their chapter, they would be more fun. Like, imagine if the Raven Guard were known specifically targetting signs of corruption and slavery in the galaxy, where they act like secret police where they are stationed and try to wrestle between the issues of the imperium's desire of corruption and the Raven Guard's desire for freedom of all without putting themselves in serious trouble, like a inbetween of Salamanders and Ultramarines when it comes to civilian care. Hell, they'd be perfect as secret police or as spies commendeered by the Inquisition and you can explore that path. Focus less on the emo and dark aesthetic and more of the brighter side of the same coin to the Alpha Legion and Night Lords that was made a plot point in the books, as well harkening to Corvus' own beliefs.
I also think it'd be neat if they try to use Corax to reinstate Malice as a player, like saying Malice used Corax's desire to destroy his tainted brothers and chaos after the raptor incident that Corax became a daemon primarch in his name by accident.
I also definitely think giving Corax, as unlikey as it is, a model in his daemon form to play as for Raven Guard. Everyone who knows Raven Guard probably states that daemon Corax is their favorite part and that would definitely boost up popularity for the chapter and add alot of tragedy and intrigue to the current storyline without affecting too much stuff as he would probably stay hidden and do his own thing.

My 40k army is actually Ravenguard, and honestly it's because their theme ISN'T the usual 'Run at it chainsword go brrr' or Just making massive gunlines. Granted 10th has pretty much done away with the stealthy uniqueness, here's hoping they get a good detachment in the 'dex, but I loved the theme. Flanking shenanigans, ambushes, snipers, there aren't many chapters that got on with that kind of asymmetric warfare. I love a good wall of guns as much as the next guy but while they were far from good in 9th (I play for fluff, not for competitiveness) they just had a playstyle I jived with more than most. Plus I think Corax is pretty rad, would love to see him as a model on the tabletop. Given the kinds of powers he's obtained, I think he would be very different to someone like Rowboat Girlyman or The Lion.

I really liked the old assault marine miniatures, mark 6 helmets and lightning claws (I remember converting some sergeants using the old metal Terminator lightning claw arms). The black armour was really easy for a young me to paint (Chaos black spray, detail guns/swords, paint some parts light grey then white, base, done). Never remember the army doing particularly well but it was good fun.
I found the background of the legion quite interesting as it's one where the primarch really was at odds with how the legion operated and how this played out during the Great Crusade.

Raven Guard being a legion/chapter focusing on Stealth give me a very watered down Night lords. Similarly to iron warriors v imperial fists
The Night lords v Raven Guard is very amusing to me. With Konrad thinking Corvus having what Night Lords have but better and feeling jealous about it makes me like the Raven guard. And as someone who loves Night lords Id still love a very watered down NL chapter. They arent Night lords but I feel its close enough to get my approval.

The Reven Guard are not more cringe than the Night Lords.
