To me I always thought Morty has to do with forgiveness and moving on. Leave it to the gene father of the death guard to be so stupidly stubborn. He cannot forgive his father for taking away his victory, he cannot forgive himself for letting him and his sons fall to Nurgle (I know he didn’t have a choice), and he cannot forgive himself for being born a psyker. He cannot forgive the imperium and what his father set out to do. As you said, Nurgle is stagnation. Forgiveness is change. Morty boy can never move on, both to his own pride, resentment, and childishness. But also because he is not mature enough to forgive. He cannot turn the other cheek. He cannot live and let live. Despite all that, do you know who still thinks Morty can be saved? Who could potentially forgive him? The Emperor.

@@tonythatoneguy3861 Warhawk completely blows this out of the water. Mortarion knew, at least peripherally, that Typhus was up to _something_, and by letting him get on with it he was culpable in creating the situation where "he had no choice".

He got trapped with Nurgle against his will, became something he hates, is disrespected by Nurgle himself and many other followers, and his psyche is rotted. I think the biggest thing he resents is himself and I think he's the most likely traitor to return to the emperor when he realizes he's projecting

Absolutely if it wasn't for Typhos he would have been a renegade and carved out a small empire which could have made an alliance with the empire. As he stated in LoS he's done with the empire at large and is happy with the damage he caused during the heresy and is only out to settle grudges with the remaining loyalist primarchs. And I think if big E doesn't cleanse/redeem him then he'll attack each of the loyalists, causing large amounts of damage but ultimately not to wipe them out. Likely targeting homeworlds and spreading plagues that they will have to deal with for centuries. And then at the end of the day go back to his plague world and tend to his gardens and his legion. Probably also chasing down Typhus and getting revenge for the betrayal

Reddit hates Mortarion because they have this concept of him that he's bitter the Emperor stealing his glory by defeating his xeno "father". But that's completely missing the point. Mortarion was essentially in the exact same position Angron was in, but Mortarion got a little farther. Mortarion got close to dying for a cause that he believed in, helping the poor and oppressed resistance of Barbarus against his tyrannical master. Mortarion hated the Emperor because he immediately saw that the Emperor was the *same* tyrant that his master was and wanted nothing to do with his Empire. The Emperor gave Mortarion a "choice" to fight and die for what he believed in, and Mortarion took it. But it *didn't even matter* because the Emperor came in, finished the job, and took him to be an unwilling participant in the Great Crusade anyway. Mortarion took the choice not to join and it didn't matter. That's why Mortarion *hates* the Emperor and the Empire, because he knew exactly what it was from the start.
Then later on, his lieutenant Typhon put him and his Legion in a position where even their superhuman constitutions were wracked with so much agony *that they could not die from* that he had to take a bargain with Nurgle in order to make it stop. Mortarion traded one master for another, and another, again and again and even despite having some of his father's foresight, he couldn't do anything about it but be tossed around between cosmic rulers. Of course he's resentful, of course he became the very psychic monster and tyrant that he hated because the universe showed him that's all there really is.

As a Death Guard player- permit me some cope for Papa Morty. His resentment in the Emperor is rooted in his hatred for tyrants, seeing Big E as barely better than the overlords of Barbarus. Regarding E-money stealing his kill- I think it's less the killsteal and more that thr Emperor exposed Mortarion as weak, and as any Death Guard marine would tell you, Mortarion abhors weakness. I think also that by the Emperor striking down the overlord, Mortarion lost the chance to redeem that moment. He could never return to overcome that trial and prove to himself he had grown stronger. It's not as severe as what happened to Angron but it's the same pattern of arrival, demand dominance, watch them fail and override their will.
Also Morty only joined to Nurgle to spare his sons the pain of Nurgle's rot. (Mostly cope but I can't let you talk shit about my dad like that)
In all seriousness, though, I deeply appreciate your personal takes on the primarch series. It means a lot that you care enough about your art to make it personal.

What makes me so angry at Mortarion as a character is that he could have been so much better and still maintain that core of being a bitter asshole, if only he was written better.
He was raised by a utterly horrible and irredeemable monster who used his psychic powers to torment him, he breaks out, finds a tribe of humans whose struggles he can relate to, leads them against the witch tyrants, the Emperor shows up and from Mortarion's point of view tricks him into servitude and now he's bound to serve what he grows to believe is just another witch tyrant.
More over he realizes he himself is an incredibly powerful psycher- the 2nd most powerful after Magnus- and he LOATHES that part of himself and suppresses it, making him even more bitter.
This could have been an amazing setup for a traitor primarch and if expanded upon one of the more compelling falls to Chaos. Make him a person who above all despises tyrants like his adoptive father or, as he sees him, the Emperor, and make his hate of psychic powers motivated by that, by his hate of the strong using their powers to lord over the weak.
From there you can start introducing Nurgle slowly, naturally. Nurgle is the Enthropy, the End of All Things and the ultimate equalizer. The Antithesis of Tyranny.

Iirc, Morty grown to hate tyrants similar to Corax, but Morty’s reason was due to his abusive adopted father. He valued himself and the people of Barbaros and their freedom. And when the time came to rebel against his adopted father, big E showed up and gave Morty the challenge to either kill the adopted father and not serve the imperium, or Big E kills him and Morty has to join. Morty failed miserably in his attempt, which led to Big E taking the kill. I think it meant everything to Mortarion because to him not killing his father as intended just led to be ruled from one tyrant to another.

I deeply love the concept of Mortarion’s future. I am a sucker for redemption stories and I genuinely feel it is easier to redeem a resentful man-child than a hateful adult. Motarion is also the victim of bad writing, flip-flopping on whether he hates his sons or not.
Typhus is my favorite example. Typhus ruined Mortarion’s life/existence, but he does not actively hate Typhus. Anytime Typhus talks shit Mortarion puts up with it and is silent, quite out of character. This is because he genuinely cared for him and still does. Even de fore the heresy he would inquire about Typhus and his deeds. He is a failure of a Father to him and this legitimately pains him in such a way that he cannot even bring himself to hate Typhus (actively).
His *Nurglefication* is also said to be slower to an extent with his scythe remaining clean and less corrupted. He resents Nurgle and seeks to leave him despite how the curse of Nurgle compels familial feelings. Nurgle even chose him not because of his resentment, but because he had the potential to become the sort of *Anti-Nurgle* since his thing as a Primarch is extreme physical-resistance.
I believe Mortarion should challenge his father’s words in a contest of sorts (about his ability to change). Have a grey knight captain be defeated in a campaign and stand uncorrupted before Mortarion himself.
Mortarion would capture him and declare WOULD turn him, without torture, without warp trick, but by himself to prove that the most incuruptable of his father’s works could fail, AND to sate his grudge against the *heart-carver* Draco by corrupting one of his men.
However, the captain would slowly learn more of Mortarion and continue to resist him. Even seeing him torture his adoptive father’s soul (he has retrieved it from the warp in Dark Imperium) as well as witness the treatment of Mortarion by the other Commanders.
Maybe….just maybe, Mortarion might just slowly start to listen to the captain, maybe Mortarion might start meditating such as the grey knights do to mock him but start unwitting introspecting due to this….Maybe he might even attempt to find his soul working Nurgle’s Garden or even find the location of Isha….
Perhaps…with his soul back, with Isha’s purification, and with his own natural resistance, Mortarion could break free! And return to the Materium with the Eldar Goddess in tow! Crippling Nurgle and cementing his return and the next returned Primarch!
(TLDR: I deeply enjoy the concept of Mortarion return to the imperium after a GREAT deal of soul searching but GW will never do it…)

Hot Take: Mortarion is hated because he’s the most real primarch. Hypocritical, resentful, loathing, he is that one coworker that comes into work with a terrible attitude everyday, or that one kid in school who spent half their school year in suspension. On its surface its repulsive, but underneath exists a web of complex emotions, mental irregularity, failed desires, trauma, and lack of fulfillment. Just. Like. Morty. Many of us are lucky enough to have had that one good figure in life, caring friends, a loving family, to give us a bedrock for us to maneuver around the difficulties of life and negative emotions, but some are less fortunate and thats very real. Mortarion is a reminder that we cannot escape who we are and what we come from through sheer willpower. Ones ability to change or gain an opportunity to change for the better is a matter of circumstance, and thats a cold hard fact of reality that makes people uncomfortable.

I personally really like Mortarion and feel he's an interesting character who's been done dirty by GW writing, especially in Godblight.
He deeply cares about his sons and it's been a character trait of his all throughout the Horus heresy and other books. The only exemption to this is Godblight where for some reason he's awful to his sons and a narcissistic man child. Which I consider a mishandling of his character personally. As he only really dislikes a handful of his own sons Typhus being at the top of his shitlist
He also doesn't follow Nurgle's orders and is very independent. The plague wars were more to settle a grudge with Guilliman for himself than to please Nurgle and he gets on the bad side of Nurgle for going off with Kugath to do their own shit. He's pretty much done with Terra and has no interest in bringing down the empire as he says in Lords of Silence.
Also on the matter of him using warp abilities, his hatred of them came from his upbringing and what big E told him and during the heresy he realises that they aren't awful if you can control and master them. Is he a hypocrite absolutely but I find it very interesting that he had that change of heart and wanted to know more and master the warp similar to Magnus. And he himself seems to know his own hypocrisy and the irony of him always having been a powerful psyker.
At the end of the day I feel his been a victim of GW's bad writing of villains doing him dirty. One book he's cartoonishly evil and narcissistic man child and in the next he's a man trying to make the most of his lot. Which I think is interesting, he was forced into joining chaos and even during the siege of Terra he was in it for himself and not for chaos. I think if it wasn't for Typhos' betrayal he would have been a renegade primarch not aligned with chaos

Magnus can be arrogant, naive and vain, but at least that comes from a sense of conviction and almost childlike naivete. I honestly think, after reading A Thousand Sons and some of their other Horus Heresy lore, that Magnus is best written with that naivite and conviction in mind. He grew up on a planet where people were tolerant, kind and intellectually open, where psykers and other Imperial minorities presided worhout judgement or hate. The living conditions were some of the best, and Magnus genuinely loved everything he helped build and discover. The dude didn't just like knowledge, he worshipped it.

I've never thought about his character much other than his sick ass model that would *terrify* me to paint if I ever bought it or was given it. Angron is a tragedy I can empathize with, Magnus is a story in arrogance and hubris that frustrates and fascinates me, Lorgar is a hopeful ideal fool that was manipulated by others in his lowest moment, even fuxking Horus is a showing in how toxic pride can be without humility.
Mortarion? Shit, dude just always hated his dad and never got the fuck over it. It's so familiar and mundane it should be humanizing but it's just pathetic and forgettable. It makes me glad knowing that, IF the Great Crusade succeeded, Mortarion and his legion were one of those on the short list of 'can not be kept around' along with Kurze and Angron.

    • @blizzardgaming7070

The thing that frustrates me is that I want to like Mortarion but the writing never develops him beyond spiteful supervillan. The story they could tell with him is a story of how someone lets resentment and spite hold them back and eventually leading to their ultimate downfall. They have the pieces to tell a good story and make a good character but he just gets relegated to a grim reaper knock off. I think the best bit of characterisation is when the deathguard are corrupted, and it's only after seeing his legion in agony that he relents. That shows a more complex side of him that never gets developed, how even through all the bitterness he is not completely evil. I wish they'd write him more as the misguided bane of tyrants unable to see his own folly than just a spiteful a-hole.

All he needed was someone giving him a choice, asking him for help. Something no one ever did in his life. And it seemed he really cared about his people.
But BigE did the usual BigE thing and fcked up his meeting as superhumanly as possible. So in the end, Morty had to serve an another tyrant, without him ever reaching his goals. So he had all that spite and anger brewing in him that he could never release and incapable to let it go. Much like Perty, but a bit different. Morty needed clousure, he needed to kill his necromancer dad but bigE took it from him, and he had to serve the tyrant who took away his life's mission. Anything after that... mostly a writer problem. They gave Morty less depth than Demon Angron... and at this point I dont even think there is potential in his character, he was written as the petty evil mothman for too long...

I think you have a very surface level understanding of Mortarian. Mortarian, like the khan was designed to be the rebel, however unlike the more free sprited Jaghatai, mortarian was the dig in his heels and be the intractable wall kind. He will take a position and not move from said position. His hatred of psykers is understandable because the overlords were psyker necromancers who preyed on the humans of barbaras to use as resources for their flesh armies. And yes while he uses psychic powers now it must be understood that the old mortarian died when he gave himself to nurgle, all his beliefs, all his convictions and all his endurance was incapable of standing against the lord of entropy. Think what that must do to a person who prides themselves on their intractable nature. Not to mention daemon princes/primarchs are not the same individuals, rather they are the essence of the chaos gods given physical flesh as when someone undergos apotheosis, their soul is removed and replaced with the essence of the chaos god, who usually then claims their soul. The mind and physical body is still that of the individual but their essenceis now that of the chaos gods making them extentions of the gods will. Its why their is a perfect clone of fulgrim, his soul still existed in the warp to inhabit the clone body.

I don't get it tbh. I came here to understand why People dislike Morty, but I just cant help but disagree with pretty much everything that was said.
    1. Hypocrasy: Morty did not choose to be a Psycher, nor did he choose to take a deal with chaos or Magical forces. He was forced into the whole situation by Typhon. I think hate of psychers is stupid, but look what a psycher did to him and his Legion, lol. And how is he supposed not to fly everywhere or read peoples minds? I don't think he can shut off the Psychic-ness if he wanted to.
    2. Resenting the Emporer: I did not read as muss containing Morty as I should before entering this discussion, BUT from all I see, Mortarion has been fighting his whole life against Slavers and Tyrants. The empire is described in the opening of the Settings Intro as the "Most Brutal Regime imaginable". Mortarion is kinda shitty in the way that he only brings death and just kinda assumes, that whatever comes next will be better (ironically the whole rebirth from death cycle Nurgle has going), but I think his hate for the Emporer and the Empire is much more Grounded than people are lead to believe.
    3. Being childish: Resentment is of course a negative trait, and I think we all have had bad traits that we've overcome. I understand how you can see this hate as childish since you have overcome it, but I dont think that makes it childish by default. I see Perturabo as childish because I see flaws in him that I like to think I have overcome. But this is a very subjective part of a character and more importantly, flaws make charakters better, not as people, but as literary objects. I like Perturabo more because I understand how he is feeling, because I have been there.
I have seen a lot of youtube videos on 40k, mainly Heresy lore, and I have read a few Primarch Novels. Please, somebody help me understand why everyone calls Mortarion a little shit, because to me he's just a well written charakter and a great Personification of death.

I think a lot of it comes down to Magnus sympathy, a forgetfulness that the primarchs don't have the same full picture as the reader or even the emperor...and of course Mortarian is a jackass in his own right in places like the trial of Nicaea.

Mortarion fell into the trap of being not liked by a single writer. Nobody wanted to write him, for him or about him.
Alan gave them a pretty good synopsis for a character into the future, but sadly died too soon to give a certain understanding about Mortarion as a character. He could've been one of the best characters, but even those writers assigned to Deathguard just kinda didn't give a shit. They did like Typhon and everyone inside the legion, gave most of characterization to people like Grulgor, Morargh and even Morturg. But the primarch is just... There. Just like Ferrus Manus, who was forgotten as well, aside from dying at the very start of Horus Heresy.
Most of the time people write Mortarion into an idiot and crybaby that he is... Just out of their own resentment and lack of interest in writing him at all.
Mf doesn't even have a motivation, they just kinda left him in this limbo of "To hell with that guy, I hate him and I don't even know what the hell he is. He hates Emperor because there's no resolution to the conflict and we'll just leave it at that".
I don't want to seem like a special snowflake, but I like Mortarion. I love Deathguard, absolutely despise Typhon and like this bumbling idiot that they wrote Mortarion s personality into, being sad that there will probably never be an actual resolution to whatever it is that they keep writing about him.
He is a perpetual failure of a character. And I'm saddened by it.

Mortarian and Fulgrim have actually grown on me recently. For Fulgrim, its the fact that by the end of the Heresy, he almost seemed to be the most self-aware of how ridiculous their cause had been between Mortarian and Perturabo's petulance, Magnus' aloofness, Lorgar (the guy who kickstarted all of this) getting kicked out of the campaign, Angron being Angron, and Horus becoming an egomaniac. With that in mind, he was the most eager to make fun of it all. I've been that guy who just wanted to start joking or making fun of a situation once it's devolved into bickering, so I can appreciate his desire to annoy everyone and just have fun until it all goes belly up. Now of course, I've never taken "having fun" as far as the Emperor's Children, but you get my drift.
As for Mortarian, I like him as an even more petulant version of Starscream: a character who has some sense for the wider picture, goes "I'm doing things my way," and tries to twist things towards his own ends...but his ego and personality destroy all attempts to forward his own agenda, and in the end, he winds up where he started as someone else's attack dog. This almost makes him more frustrating in a sense: As Jaghatai points out, there's so much potential to Mortarian, and if he and Jaghatai were allies, they'd be unstoppable between the former's resolute strength and the latter's fluidity and speed. But because the Pale King put off everyone including his own sons until Typhon betrayed him...well now he and Starscream could compare wings if nothing else.

Morty really sucks. But the one moment I love about him is when he ultimately made the decision to fall to chaos. It was becase he saw his sons in pain and he could not stand that. And now he's angry and resentfully forever. At his masters at his self at the Emperor.
I see potential but I wish he was given better motivation and some good writing.

I feel like morty is oddly hated on. Something you mentioned made me think maybe it's because more people see what they don't like about themselves in morty. All the flaws I see mentioned about him though I think is showcased in all other primarchs especially the other traitors. Curze (my fav) and angron are often seen as tragic characters for their mental and physical abuse growing up but morty isn't when he recieved both from his adoptive father. Also people said he turned just from resentment when in one of the books it stated freeing the people of his home world of the tyranny of his adoptive father and his kind is what morty wanted and when the emperor came he saw the same tyrannical qualities in big e. You can't say that big e isn't a tyrant. Morty was showcased to care for the common people and his sons multiple times but he had a torturous upbringing. He didn't know how to be with people and hurt people hurt people. I just don't understand the hate he gets

  • @JHadders98

I think mortarion is very much a character that suffers from lack of lore/being shoehorned. Some books fantastically explore that he is a damaged and flawed character, often obsessing over his traumatic childhood and his need to become the ‘hero’ and safe other people from that fate. But he always falls short because he both overestimates their torment and underestimates the long term impact of his tactics. But people often chalk him up to the age old majorkill he salty and mad cos kill steal. Rather than looking at the very fact his life’s struggle, his years of torment and torture, endurance and suffering, to get to his penultimate goal is both crushed by the goading of the emperor and simply snuffed out as if it were nothing. That his life’s work was meaningless and his struggles pitiful and such a weight he could not stand and so he like many traumatised people compartmentalised it; getting overly aggressive when reminded or shown it again.
Overall like the iron hands there is so much potential depth there that people simply do not explore because they do not necessarily want or know how and so just kinda end up with half baked shite. BUT I get where you are coming from and I feel your resting on the edge of the full picture and need that lil nudge to fully embrace it (read buried dagger, mortarion, and lanterns light)

Mortarion is the perfect example that, despite being super-human and nearly godlike, the primarchs are still human and are not perfect. There are plenty of people in real life that fall to the same follies that Mortarion does. Does that make him a good character? No, but i think it makes him a bit more realistic than most think. The thing that makes him the worst primarch is that he's seemingly incapable of moving passed his hatred and growing as a person. Even Perturabo saw the error of his ways eventually.

I don't think morty is badly written, he's supposed to be his own special brand of loser all traitor Primarchs. He's holds grudges until mold starts growing on them because that resentment is what he is supposed to represent. Even his distain for pskers was less real and more him projecting his hatred for his adoptive father onto them, which is why that hatred crumbles anytime he absolutely needs to use the warp to do things.

I kind of have a soft spot for Fulgrim. Because of the Imperial Truth, he didn't know what he was dealing with in that sword until it was too late. As a loyalist, he was one of the most aspirational and noble in spirit, even if like Magnus, he had an ego that played a big part in his downfall.
As for post-sword Fulgrim....good grief he's hilarious! Seriously, when you look at how he picks at Lorgar's self-justification for betraying Horus or makes fun of Angron's bloviating, the man/neverborn sounds like he's just trying to have a good time after getting pulled back into a project he decided he wanted no more to do with. He's kind of like an Ork in how reckless, random, or insane his actions can get, even though I know that's comparison that would drive him mad.
