@@crumarki if we’re speaking just in terms of TH-camrs that fell off, they would have experience, and loads of connections that would give them a lot of job opportunities. It’s never too late to go back to school either (community colleges, scholarships, education may even be free or more affordable if you’re outside of the U.S etc). And they could even freelance with the skills the already have. They have WAY more options than the average person would have by a landslide. Good for her for getting an education and considering her options. I don’t feel bad at all for the TH-camrs that fell off and don’t want to put in the work to find a job outside of TH-cam. They had multiple opportunities to make better choices for themselves and seek out other options 🤷🏻♀️
@@crumarki yes but she’s also working a job that requires pretty minimal training and likely paid training, so it’s pretty accessible. it’s good inspiration for ppl narrowing their opportunities unnecessarily-you /can/ actually find a “normal person job” post-influencing and be happy.
i'm a 21 year old grad student who cleans airbnbs and subs to make extra money on the side. your words at the end legit had me crying while cleaning a toilet bowl. i needed that. there is nothing wrong with working hard for what you need/want. working various jobs has humbled me so much and taught me to never give up. thank you for this video. please make more like this.
The worst thing is that those hours are superficial, like it doesn’t matter if you can get your work done effectively and to a high standard within a smaller time frame. For some reason companies are reaaaaaaal attached to the idea of a 9-5, regardless of its necessity or practicality. Imagine if we rewarded people who did quick and efficient work instead of forcing them into a 9-5 box.
@@notaspeck6104Exactly. Look at how companies freaked out during and after COVID when their employees wanted to work from home. Even though working from home made them more productive, companies wanted workers to go to their shitty skyscrapers or else they'll loose money
who else was nodding their head the entire video? mmmmhmm me. this was really well done. you sharing this take with your audience is so real of you because it's a stance/lesson that'll benefit your AUDIENCE and not yourself. i was going to comment why i think some influencers publicly talk down about post-secondary education or why some end up at the end of their influencer career with no transferrable life skills but you already articulated it so well. so, nothing much to add from this ~ influencer ~, ok kids stay in school and keep your job(s) and your common sense🦆
OMG, you watched this 😊 in my opinion. You are the definition of an influencer who advocates for people to get an education and to be smart about the steps they take in life. Love ur brand & podcast!❤
Apparently some people are making fun of gabbie for not being an influencer anymore and getting a real job but I couldn't be happier for her. I wish I'll be able to get my dream job too as a currently unemployed person
i’m glad someone else commented that. She even said that fitness would be her dream job if it weren’t for influencing. Like we watched this woman go through a bad time for her emotionally and i think that we should all be extremely proud of her for powering through and still taking care of herself in a way that’s healthy and happy for her.
She looks so much happier … and I’m more than sure that this job is just for happiness and has a nest egg…..Gabbie too me is exactly how influencers should end with her nest egg and doing what she wants …. I’m real happy for her and is showing her personal strength …..
One of the big questions about these Tiktok beggars is 'WHO is PAYING them???" Like who are the people giving their hard earned money, probably from 9-5 hardworking jobs? How did these influencers convince their viewers to make all these donations? Like, who cares that much about an influencer to give them your money? It's ironic because the influencers demonize 9-5 normal jobs, but yet, their money comes from fans who work those exact kinds of jobs.
I stopped watching TikTok 24/7 and my life got so much better I still struggle with my appearance but your channel helps me a lot I just want to say thanks
@@vvitch-mist20 right? sometimes when I use TH-cam, it automatically puts me on the shorts tab to suck me in immediately, you have to be so intentional on social media
As someone who is currently remodeling a house, I know she was just kinda joking around about us having “too many influencers and not enough electricians”, but like for real we actually do not have enough electricians. 🦆
I work for a construction company that does kitchen/bathroom/insulation upgrades and house rewiring and hoo boy is that true. Take your pick of a part of a house and we probably don't have enough people with that skill
After the real estate market crash, loads of people left the trades. It's a great union job that people need to get back into again. College and desk work isn't for everyone!
"I can't do anything else." Do people not have hobbies or passions outside of being liked? If I had the money I would take classes so I could get a job I loved.
Honestly, I'm sure they don't want to work at all. Being youtuber actually gives you a setskill, videography, video editing, and video producing stuff, theres also agency related works like content planning, pr stuff, managing currently trending influencers, etc. Sure, youre probably not PRO pro, but you have something to start with. Not only that, some youtubers have their niche such as gaming, makeup, food, etc. So at the end, they really have an array of job possibility in those niche. But I guess if you stumble into being youtuber just because you're friends with an already famous youtuber (like david dobrik) and therefore you never had to do anything yourself, then you're pretty stumped.
This is why I love Cristine from Simplynailogical. She kept her day job until she had a nail polish brand, and then when she was burnt out from TH-cam, she switched to streaming. I give her my money because I get nail polish from it. It’s a good deal for both of us. What do Jason’s viewers get from giving him money? Nothing.
Literally this because the relationship between an artist or content creator is transactional. If you’re getting a good product, then you pay to support it so that you can get more of that product. You might grow to like that content creator, but the basis should still be transactional cause that’s literally what it is 😂
I'm proud of Gabbie realizing that social media was bad for her mental health and she's moved onto something that actually makes her happy (and is productive to humanity).
Dude ikr last time I heard of her was when she had that massive breakdown on TikTok. I hope she has a great life away from social media. Jason Nash begging for money is washed up, Gabby working a regular job is not.
I’m convinced a lot of influencers come out with videos about being depressed because it would actually benefit their mental health to have more of a structured schedule that a regular job or school can give. I think it provides structure and teaches someone how to create their own routines. I know that when I’ve gone through dark times mentally, oddly enough, what helped me get up each day was to go to work, pay people in my little payroll job, feel like I’m completing something each day even though that may have been all I could complete all day. Eventually, it also helped me meet a friend who helped me a lot with getting back to who I was previously.
If it makes anyone feel better, as a high school senior, no one i know seriously wants to be an "inflencer". My friends are going to school for a lot of different things. Carpentry, tattooing, computer science, business, nursing, art, teaching, psychology, history, pharmaceuticals. And that's just what i can pull off the top of my head. I'm going to college for geography and urban planning. People write off gen z as unambitious and lazy when that's not true at all. Every kid i know has a whole lot of ambition and wants to be a positive force in the world.
@emkab100 haha when I was a kid I wanted to be a garbage man, because I wanted to ride on the back of the truck and hold onto the handle. Then I learned garbage smells 😭
I can relate, a lot of my friends (including me) are going to med school, and others I know are going to engineering, business, social work, psychology, architecture, aviation, etc.
I love this take! We’re all raised with this linear idea of going to school, finding one career, retiring, dying, and it’s not that simple anymore. We’re allowed to have chapters and volumes of things we do with our lives, especially jobs. I went from tutor to professor to social worker to stay-home parent, and I’m not done by a long shot. Hell, I might get a job at MY YMCA, it’s a dope gym and everybody who works there looks happy!
I feel like the antithesis of these influencers is Simply Nailogical. She's had her full-time job the entire stretch of her TH-cam career, invests in her followers postsecondary education, and has always stressed the importance of work and education to her young fanbase. Plus building a successful business off of her platform is really impressive. I cannot even begin to imagine how the TH-cam landscape would improve if more creators were like that.
Another thing too is some people "get into business" by slapping their name on something but she puts in the WORK to make sure she is putting her "brand/name" on things that will keep it valuable long term and not a quick cash grab
I think what bugs me the most is the fact that most of these people could AFFORD to go to college. It feel like a slap in the face . Like I would LOVE to be able to go to college, it’d help alot in the long run but not everyone ( in fact most people ) can’t afford to send themselves to college. It’s a spit in the face that they just simply refuse bc there too lazy . I don’t know how you could continue to feel good about yourself as a 50 year old begging for money on TikTok live
@@PeachPlastic no I’m not saying it does , however almost all jobs that pays over 15 an hour need a college education. As 23 year old I struggle a lot to get places to hire me without one . Unfortunately that’s just the world we live in now .
As someone who works at a grocery store, I don’t get people who hate on these kinds of jobs. Like, do you want to eat or is that not something y’all do?
You'd think COVID would've taught us as a society how vital service level jobs are, like store packers and checkout staff, but nope. Humans have such short memories when it comes to what is really important in life, it's the "undesirable jobs" that hold society up, keep us functioning and should be respected and well paid.
This man is 50. That's Gen X. He lived a significant portion of his life pre-internet. What was he doing before that? He didn't grow up hoping to be an influencer or dreaming of going viral because they weren't things!
my mom is an oncologist and obv we’re extremely well off…but why on earth is jeffrey star making more than her as she’s saving lives :( NOTHING MAKES SENSE ANYMOREEEE
its the culture in capitalistic places like america unfortunately, they value the football player more than the surgeon who will patch them up at the end of the day...strange.
at one point in time, entertainers had to be actually talented people-oriented creators (a hard thing to come by, even more so than doctors), which is why they were initially so highly paid and sought after. Now it's just about who can create the most addicting content, but advertisers still pay the same now as they did then
Capitalism rewards things that are rare more than things that are helpful. There are 26,200 Oncologists but only 1 Jeffree Star. Because it’s easier to find an Oncologist than someone as famous as Jeffree Star, corporations will pay alot more money to hire him to compete with other companies who are also trying to hire him. It shouldn’t work like this, but unfortunately that how capitalism works.
I have a family member that says she wants to be an influencer, and that she’s not meant for that “work life”. She barely wants to graduate high school and that worries me deeply. I also think that this mindset of “getting the easy way out” comes from parents that don’t push their children to become more. I want every one to know that if you’re not going to college, please at least have a plan and a backup plan if the first one fails.
Honestly. Everyone wants to be a streamer or TH-camr but barely knows any financially literacy or basic social skills to surpass. It’s like you can become one however you need a back up plan. Everything is becoming expensive so long fast money turns into short spent stash.
Agreed. I don't believe that traditional college is the best fit for everyone, but that doesn't mean "do nothing"! Go to a trade school, get a job, learn a profitable skill, find a gap in the market and start selling a service that meets people's need.
@@imapotato7391i tried going to technical school they rush and they are not helpful teachers they said to me i had to do it alone when i did. So I decided regular college
It's like trying to make it big doing only sports or the arts. You have to be exceptionally talented/lucky to make it, and even then you might not make it because most of the industry is about having the right connections. Maybe 1-5% have a chance at making ends meet, and then 0.1% of that group have a chance at making big bucks. The others will need to have it be a side gig or hobby if they don't want to bleed money
🦆I'm so glad you are calling these influencers out on their shenanigans. I work a 9-5 and would 100% pick this over the stress of having to constantly reconstruct my image to suit someone else's opinion just to get a few bucks. That's just too much for me. Great work miss! Love listening to you whist I save the world from behind the scenes 😊
One thing I hate as a disabled person is when the same people complaining that I or other disabled people aren't working when we literally CAN'T due to both limitations and a lack of workplace accommodations--(hopefully not forever for me) are the same people that say they can't work when they are able-bodied and capable of grueling without accommodations!!! It's fine to not want to work in shitty conditions, you SHOULD protest that! But saying you can't work while shaming people who actually can't work is just gross.
I think Salem did not talked about disabled people, please, correct me if I`m wrong, it may be that I just missed to see or hear about that matter in this vid. But now that you said it, I can say that I agree with you, I thank god have not ever met people like that, but damn, so sorry if you have.
I haven't finished the video yet, but I'll let you know if there is something. In general, I just like to put in things about disability in more lefty spaces since I don't want disabled people to be forgotten--and from watching on this channel, Salem is chronically ill so she knows about the difficulties and has spoken on it at other times. :)@@ambrusin4889
I was looking for this comment !! This exactly !! I don’t qualify a lot of jobs, and especially without secondary education. And I can’t get secondary education therefor accommodating jobs because I’m majorly chronically ill and disabled !!
Yes! My disabilities don't impact my cognitive usefulness but do affect my physical health and safety, meaning I have the brain that wants to work and has the skills to do a great job, but no one will employ me cos they don't want to fit my necessary accommodations that really are pretty simple. I can get volunteer work, I've got great work experience that way and now get told I've got too much experience by employers who don't want to hire me instead of a non-disabled person with less experience than me. Then we face stigma and governments calling us lazy for not working. It's dehumanising and degrading. While we have able bodied people proudly boasting about how they don't want to work, etc. It's infuriating.
I remember an older video from PewDiePie, who, if I remember correctly said that all his success is just a luck. He made videos, had fun, but didn't plan on becoming so big. Sure, he was kind a well off from the beginning, but still. It sort of wasn't his goal to become big but he did. And years later, he lives his life.
this is the reality check i needed. we need to stop letting *rich online gurus* make us feel bad for working regular jobs, drinking coffee everyday and sleeping 8 hours a day. enough with the guilt trips
This is exactly why I've been unfollowing and blocking a lot of celebrities and "influencers". At this point I know how the algorithm works so I purposely engage with content that is more wholesome for me.
These influencers made me believe college isn't necessary and because of my naivety I wasted two years after high school, hunting for jobs and finding none. 😭 I learned the hard way that college is necessary and now I'm pursuing my chemistry degree. ❤ I wish people would stop pedestalizing influencers as everyone's situation is different.
Thank you for defending 9-5s! I’m a part time writer who works a 40 an hour a week day job. This is something I would continue to do even if my books were making enough to pay for my mortgage. My day job is reliable and allows me to pay my bills, care for my diabetic cat and save for my future. It’s uncommon for a creative lifestyle to do that. I have several friends who are full time writers, but they’re only able to do so by being financially supported by their parents or a man. And supportive family members are great but I’ve seen the later lead to toxic situations. There’s no shame in 9-5s!
Girl you do you. No one should be spending their lifetime working and making someone else rich just so we can eat or at least pay rent. Not saying we shouldn't pursue our goals, but I really don't see the point on defending 9-5 jobs.
I have my own small cleaning business. Yes I clean toilets for a living but I make full time income working about 12hrs a week. I recently moved back in with my parents at 27 and I'm working hard on saving up money for my next business venture. People look down at me simply because I clean for a living and it's always felt disheartening but I've been learning to take pride in my work and not let others shame me.
I was surprised to see Gabby Hannah teaching a fitness class but honestly good for her. Honestly I think the biggest social media success story remains Jenna Marbles. She got her money and invested it wisely so when she no longer wanted to make videos she didnt have to. Thats the real smart move there.
you articulated all my thoughts so well. I'm someone who had a big interest in teaching and education and currently work as a behavior therapist. it deeply upsets me how underpaid teachers are. they are literally educating the next generations, are putting in hard work, love, patience, and time into educating these kids, and they deserve SO much more than what they're getting.
My dad immigrated here when he was very young. He never got the chance to get an education until he came here. He worked really hard to get his associates degree, and always told me and my brother to get an education; that's the one thing no one can take from you
Salem I LOVE this video!! I'm finishing my degree in communications and the more I've learn about content creation/social media the less it has appealed to me. I'm happy I have a communications degree because it's a good degree to have, but I appreciate it most because the skills I have learned are applicable in so many fields beyond social media. It's an excellent foundation to build off of if I want to get a 9-5 job in a different industry than media. I think social media and social media influencers give a very narrow view of the types of content creation jobs/communications jobs are out there and it's upsetting to think that so many kids want to be social media influencers. That said, I wanted to be a TH-camr when I was a kid and now that's not a very appealing job to me, so maybe they'll change their minds as they get older. Anyways, excellent work and excellent video. Also Kenji is adorable.
I've become so disillusioned with influencer culture, especially because of how common its become. I tend to only follow influencers who do content as a side gig and still have a more traditional job. I think because of the cost-of-living crisis it's just less enjoyable to see people making insane amounts of money for doing next to nothing. I do still enjoy a lot of influencers who are down-to-earth but I really struggle with how commercialized and phony a lot of content has become lately. No shame in people making money in whatever way they have to, but I do wish that people would stop idolizing influencers to such an insane degree.
@@pandas4evr123197 same now, i just watch aesthetic vlogs of clg students especially in med field or similar biology field, it feels motivating, relatable and still connected to the real world
this lowkey happens at normal jobs too, definitely not in the same way but watching all of the high-salary, bonus receiving employees receive gifts and money and trips etc for holidays that the LOW PAID hourly employees buy with THIER OWN MONEY??? makes me feel a certain way
As a college student who works as a substitute para, I constantly question if me going to my degree is even worth it because people like this make so much money. It's good to know that at least I've building up skills I'll need in life by going to college.
Thanks for talking about this and identifying how dystopian tiktok lives are. I watch a commentary channel that reacts to these and the people doing battles literally just sit there and ask people to tap the heart button, to share, and give them galaxies. It's so bizarre. Yes, I wish I could be making some of the coin they are making, but it feels like it would be such a low way to go about getting money. I'm glad you have pride and respect for yourself!
He's adorable! My husband just brought an 8 week old puppy home 5 days ago, we named him Dozer. Puppies are awesome but alot of work! The kids love him and our other animals will just have to get used to him😅 Congratulations on the new addition, I love your videos!
I think if they are raising money for a good cause it is acceptable and they usually also make a large donation, we cant just rely on them to pay everyones hospital bills, sports fees and that stuff. If its for a charity I also think its good to show more people. Begging for money or setting up a go fund me for themselves is a whole other thing and just simply unethical.
i absolutely respect and agree with the “i’ll never feel bad for having a regular job and working for things”. even though it seems easier to be an influencer and do nothing to get millions on dollars, it’s more fulfilling to work for stuff. it’s more tiring and requires more energy and effort, but it’s more fulfilling putting in effort and getting rewarded instead of getting everything for free. also builds confidence and self efficacy
I believe a significant issue lies in the cost of living in America. The American dream once promised that hard work would lead to success. Nowadays, people see the reality for what it is. Those attending university face exorbitant student loan debts, while living expenses, housing costs, and healthcare expenses are unmanageable. People are desperate, and aspirations have shifted from dreams of becoming a superstar or NBA player to aspiring influencers. This shift reflects the prevailing desperation. Many find it challenging to survive on normal 9-5 jobs. In the US, teachers often need second jobs during the summer to make ends meet. A potential solution would involve ensuring that wages are commensurate with the cost of living. Also what you have to factor in is, that America is extremely capitalistic. Everything is designed a certain way, so people get the feeling of desperate need.
i remember this girl interviewing this social media influencer and the influencer was going on and on how she got tattoos on her face, quit her job for social media to be full time, and even burned her high school diploma (but called it a degree🤥) and the interviewer was saying how dumb she was, that she can’t get a real job now she has tattoos on her face, and social media isn’t forever. although the lady was a bit rude in how she was delivering it, she was right. people in the comments were so mad about how the interviewer just ran on the girl’s parade but she just gave the girl a slap of reality.
I'm glad there are people like you who work in the digital space that advocates for post secondary education. You, your sister, simplynailogical, joanna ceddia, and even anthpo who left the social media to focus on getting a career have voiced that they like youtube, tiktok, etc but inform their audiences that an education is going to take them further than their influencer life will. Thank you for talking about this, and congrats on the puppy ❤
I teach high school seniors. I don't push my kids toward any specific path, but I do push them to think about what they want their life to look like and what skills and interests they have. I have a couple of students who say they want to be influencers, mostly because they want an 'easy' job. I always push back and try to make them think about all the planning and effort that this may take (What are you going to do to stand out? What kind of branding are you going to create for yourself?). I'm never going to outright discourage a student, but i think it's important to make them think critically that being an influencer is not going to just be having money and going on brand trips.
Salem this video brought me so much reassurance. im 18 and just finished high school and I feel so much pressure to try and persue some kind of social media job because it seemed like people working a 9-5 don't have a good work - life balance or income, but this made me feel so much more secure in my decision to have a regular career. thanks so much for your hard work on this vid ♡ ♡ ♡
all jokes aside I’m proud of gabby Hanna, I grew up watching her and seeing her escape social media, get a job where she looks happy at is just awesome motivational👏🏽🙏🏽
I love my job, I love the stability, I love having pension, I love having savings, I love being able to afford my apartment, I love the invaluable experience of working shifts at a hotel, which might seem tedious but it's actually fun and interesting, I will never share my life online cause the cost is not worth the reward, privacy is a privilege.
It is really surreal that the average person goes to work day by day and busts their butt but can’t afford rent yet some of these influencers literally just sit there and beg and can afford so much more
Something that's extra frustrating about these influencers begging for money is there is skills they could have learned if they were willing to put in the effort that would have both benefited their influencer career and been marketable for normal jobs when they were done. They could have developed graphic design or video editing skills working on their own content, they could have learned to interpret marketing metrics, they could have learned public speaking, they could have developed systems for managing staff/contractors, they could have developed their sales skills. So many ways a savvy influencer could make themselves an appealing future candidate for normal jobs but they don't bother.
I think the main issue is really the fact that normal jobs just don't pay enough. Being a successful influencer does, why wouldn't anyone want to be an influencer? Especially as it's "low effort". And also how expensive college has become people don't want to be tied down into debt. And also hustle culture bros.
Anyone can be an influencer but not anyone can be a SUCCESSFUL influencer. You need to have the right connections, be conventionally pretty and have one of the cookie cutter personalities (extroverted, quirky or awkward). Even then it might not work out...
@@SocksWithSandalsEnjoyer To be a stereotypical “influencer”yeah but being a successful TH-camr there’s a lot of paths like animation, compilations, specific niches, commentary, Vtubing, and sm more that you don’t need connections or looks, not saying those are easy to achieve either tho
I cannot express enough how much I love this video. I agree with what you said, 100%. Social media and chronically online people have made it seem that having a regular day job is lowly, pitiful, and unimportant, but what they don't realize is that the world will fall apart if everyone who has a regular job decides to quit. Like, have we not learned anything about the financial security that these jobs give? I'll take a fixed but sure salary every month over virality-induced spurts of money any day. It's all just super sad, thank you for speaking facts.
You and your sister are one of the only Latina commentary TH-camrs that I’ve seen and I really appreciate it. Bc it’s hard to feel represented in this sub genre of youtube
I loved this video, I realized that a lot of those thoughts of “who wouldnt wanna live like that” were internalized after growing up on social media almost all one’s life, and im a ‘99 baby so I cant IMAGINE growing up as these kids nowadays and basically being raised by social media LITERALLY their whole life! I used to wanna have a platform and slowly realized ew i dont wanna walk around and people recognize me everywhere and have to put on a face for the camera all the time. That grass is not greener for me
I really appreciate you saying this as an influencer yourself. My 7 year old niece keeps telling me she wants to be "a tic tocker" and while I'm never going to be the adult to dash her dreams... I just keep telling her that there are a lot of skills she needs to learn as an investment in herself if her dream is to reach that level and have a shot at maintaining it. Having a fall back plan isn't giving up, it's a long term investment in you. Great video... I'll definitely be showing it to her at some point.
Shout out to Gabbie for realizing who she became in her mental spiral due to social media was impacting her life and taking a step away and finding a healthier lifestyle. Thats really admirable and I'm glad she is doing okay
The only thing I disagree with here is the meritocracy. Working hard should be for things like uplifting your communities and building relationships with your neighbors. Hard work should not be for basic needs. The lure of influencing is only getting stronger because nobody wants to bust their asses 8 hours a day and watch their bodies and mind suffer, just to only be able to maybe pay rent and buy food. It’s a symptom of such a larger problem. No shade! I always enjoy your videos. 🦆✌️
My thing is you gain a lot of business social savvy skills from having to run sponsorships and organize schedules and recording videos and editing them and marketing yourself. They have a lot of skills they just don’t wanna apply them to a corporate job….
I went back to college at 24, now just graduated my MPH at 28! I also just landed my first “big girl job” as an executive administrator after many years as a vet tech and server. It’s never too late. I have a lot of vet tech friends in their 30s starting vet school now as well. Never say “I can’t do that- it’s too late”. Jason Nash could easily get into real estate or insurance. You don’t have to get hired by someone else, you can always start your own thing as long as you’re willing to put the work in. School will always be there and it will always count as “experience”.
I love how I was listening to this video on the background while doing other stuff, and I got an add about a reality show that was EXACTLY about this situation AND I thought it was a part of your video.
Gabbi not only looks fulfilled but she looks healthier mentally. Yes..there's a look. Jason looks beat tf down and sad. Thank you for saying what you're saying because kids (and some adults...and even SOME middle-aged children) don't get it.
salem, what kind of foundation are you wearing here?! and what kind of brush or sponge do you use to apply it?! your makeup looks FLAWLESS here. i needs itttt!! 🥰🥰
I tell everyone in my life that my goal is to have a 9-5 office job because I love typing, answering phones, and doing paper work lol they think I'm boring or crazy even for wanting that but it's stable, not too fast paced, I get benefits, and I don't have to work holidays. It's honestly perfect compared to all other jobs I've had in the past 🥰 can't wait to get me an office job when I get out of college 😂❤
And this is why all jobs should pay a living wage. We'd have a lot fewer shortages in essential but low paying fields since there are always people who would enjoy the work but don't think it's financially feasible
I agree that influencers should have a backup plan, but just want to add that college and university degrees aren't the only option. There are lots of trades programs and apprenticeships out there too. Trades jobs can pay well and are in demand because SO many people go the academic route instead.
when I saw that video of Gabby, honestly I was so happy for her. I wasn’t even a fan but I was inundated w the coverage when all of it went down back then. she looks so much happier and healthier than the last time we saw her. 🦆
working 40-50 hours a week also shouldn't be the norm. I want to live my life, not barely survive and spend most of my days at work... but I definitely agree with you that aspiring to be an influencer isn't sustainable.
It really sucks unfortunately that is still reality because the people in power still demand it. It’s sad but your body does adjust to that lifestyle after a few months. Not easy at all however I don’t think it’s going to change anytime soon 😢
Things people also need to think about is what will happen when these apps are no longer popular, or worse, get deleted? I know making webcomics isn’t exactly the same thing as posting on social media, but I’ll use it as an example. There have been multiple times where a site for webcomics has gotten deleted, and the people who make the webcomics for that site are at best left without the artwork and story they spent irreplaceable time making, and at worse their only source of income. This could be the same for TH-camrs, TikTokers, or other influencers at some point. People definitely need to make backup plans and not rely on one place to put all their time and content into, that is if they want to make content creation a full time thing. 🦆
We sit around all day watching people live life, we need to get out there and live for ourselves. It’s sick what social media has done to us and I’m glad I broke free.
Aw, I love your stuff so much. I find it super weird how finance has become so tied to famous people. Their jobs are how they should be making money via sponsorships (the INFLUENCING), not people. I think it’s linked to how society has normalized video games costs (follow with me here). Since Fortnite released, it’s revolutionized payment for video games and brought microtransactions into the mainstream. Along with apps on a phone, many have gotten used to “just spending $5” to get no ads, extras, or supporting a creator because it doesn’t seems like all that much. It becomes exploitative as there’s been such a normalization of this.
I think it's so sad that most people who call themselves influencers don't even recognise that it comes from the word (to) influence. They just think posting themselves living a nice and glamorous life is everything they have to do and than they get everything they want for free but it's not. They (should) need to have something good/helpful whatever with what they can influence others to do or have. As you said, many of them just tell their community how fancy everything is and that they don't need to have to go to school or learn a job. No wonder that young people just want to become an "influencer".
My mom always tells me that even if I for whatever reason don't end up working as an architect, which is what I'm in college for, nobody can take my degree and my education from me. These influencers try to make us feel dumb for having a normal job or going to college 🤦🏾♀️
Definitely two years I have changed my life completely, I stopped being in the virtual world 24/7, worry about being aware of everything on the internet and not being connected with my family, now I just focused on my real life that was almost on the floor, maybe I didn't get into college this year but I got a job to have some money and work experience. :D
I love having a job. I owned my own business for awhile and it was going well but I hated it. I don’t live for my job and owning your business takes over your life, I imagine being an Influencer is the same. I really like having a start time, finish time, knowing exactly what my income is and having a separate personal and work life.
how tf did jason nash earn a living before vlog squad then?? hes way older than david dobrik. he must have had some kind of job and maybe/probably fumbled that pretty bad if hes not learned how to money and is trying to hang on to "influencer" money this hard
Apparently he was on snl, worked as a writer , failed on all of his endeavours and was sustaining on his ex-wife’s money later on. But i still dont believe him being broke broke as when they were making big money he was always seen advising david on how to be responsible with his money.
i only browse youtube nowadays and its so insane to hear the shift in what is appreciated and not appreciated now… i love learning and would love to continue college even after i graduate later in life, theres just so many things to learn and people to meet. i cant imagine giving that up for wanting things handed to yu
I think it is so cool that Gabbie found a fulfilling job that helps people be healthier and that she can be in a positive environment around interesting people. It just sounds like a good match for her jobwise.
I rly love how Salem thinks and thought about her videos, i genuinely told all my friends and family about her when i started watching.. before male gaze era and these vids, i rly like wut Salem put for us, it's calm, soothing, in the same time full of information and fun
Love this humbling and REAL perspective from someone that has a large following. This is truly wise advice to keep in mind before jumping head first into a career that doesn’t have guaranteed continued success. I admit I’ve spent a majority of my life desperately wishing I would’ve taken that leap of faith and started a channel.. but I’m glad I held off because life happens.. and now I have so much better of an understanding of the industry and what it takes to stay relevant and successful.. thank you, truly for educating the younger generation about the cautions we should keep in mind before stepping into that field. The cherry on top? Heeding advice for life skills as always plan B if anything. Bravo Salem 👏🏼
These influencers would not last a day in corporate America. You have to “up-skill” in the IT field, if you want to continue to increase your value for employers. It’s kind of stressful, but can be exciting. Learning new skills is something a lot of people have to do. I have heard my coworker’s bf wants to make their baby a model, so they can make a lot of money. Like dear god, no. Let your child be able to decide what they want to pursue in their life.
Tyler the Creator had an interview with Jimmy Kennel. He mentioned about working at Starbucks and UPS. Tyler went from working like anyone else to becoming a well known rapper/songwriter. Winning awards and selling albums that reached charts. People tend to forget that artist and even influencers/youtuber started like everyone else, no matter.
I recently started working and in the beginning it’s scary putting yourself out there like that, but once you cross the threshold you realize that “oh, this isn’t as bad as i thought it would be”.
Most most influencers and celebrities are struggling financially or are broke in my eyes, because most of them arent acting a like clown online for free but definitely for cloud/PR
If Gabbi Hanna was able to get a real job after TH-cam, I feel like anyone can. They just don't WANT to.
FACTS I'm so happy for her too
@@elisethearmyno fr like to see her look so much happier and see the light in her eyes return, it gives me a lot of hope and inspires me to
I feel like that's unfair to Gabbie because she actually has an education and a job history.
They had multiple opportunities to make better choices for themselves and seek out other options 🤷🏻♀️

instead of demonizing 9-5 jobs, we should instead be asking/requesting to have a better work-life balance. so instead of 9-5, make it a 9-3:30pm.
Or just raise minimum wage & lower the cost of living so no one has to work 9-5s 6-7 days a week
It’s not that easy tho. People need to work those hours to be able to make enough money to pay for things.
Yup!
who else was nodding their head the entire video? mmmmhmm me. this was really well done. you sharing this take with your audience is so real of you because it's a stance/lesson that'll benefit your AUDIENCE and not yourself. i was going to comment why i think some influencers publicly talk down about post-secondary education or why some end up at the end of their influencer career with no transferrable life skills but you already articulated it so well. so, nothing much to add from this ~ influencer ~, ok kids stay in school and keep your job(s) and your common sense🦆
Thank you for always advocating for postsecondary school and day-jobs, Cris :) ❤
I had to think of you during the video. You always advocate for staying and school and getting education which is not common for influencers.

I bet she's probably happier
i’m glad someone else commented that. She even said that fitness would be her dream job if it weren’t for influencing. Like we watched this woman go through a bad time for her emotionally and i think that we should all be extremely proud of her for powering through and still taking care of herself in a way that’s healthy and happy for her.
Honestly glad for her. Breaking down on the internet would’ve been a wake up call for me 🤣🤣🤣
She really needed to get off the internet and be surrounded by normal people.

As someone who is currently remodeling a house, I know she was just kinda joking around about us having “too many influencers and not enough electricians”, but like for real we actually do not have enough electricians. 🦆
Definitely! Electricians make good money and they have such important skills that most people need but don't have.
theres a literal deficit of mental health professionals in places like MI where the suic1d3 rates are hella high lol
@@mariya_tortillai believe it. There’s a deficit of medical providers of every type! We need less TikTok influencers and more…everything else lol.
Nothing.
omg yes I love Christine she really is a good person and sets a very good example❤️
Literally this because the relationship between an artist or content creator is transactional. If you’re getting a good product, then you pay to support it so that you can get more of that product. You might grow to like that content creator, but the basis should still be transactional cause that’s literally what it is 😂
Wait, Im out of the loop, did she quit her day job after her business became stable?
I think she said she would never quit her day job because she just loves forensic crime statistics (I think that’s what it was.)

“There is no shame in working hard for the things that you want” PERIOD

"The grass is greener wherever you water it" is such bars
I mean when i was little everyone wanted to be a dolphin caretaker Hahah.. so maybe we should take what kids say with a grain of salt
yeah, my younger friends want normal jobs, and my older friends have normal jobs lmao.
@emkab100 haha when I was a kid I wanted to be a garbage man, because I wanted to ride on the back of the truck and hold onto the handle. Then I learned garbage smells 😭
My Gen Z daughter is a junior and she wants to be a paramedic. It's not something she just thought of, either. She's been saying this for years.

Just bought some Holo Taco as an investment 😊
Unless you go to a school for a specific technical trade, college doesn't teach real-life application of knowledge.
Humans have such short memories when it comes to what is really important in life, it's the "undesirable jobs" that hold society up, keep us functioning and should be respected and well paid.

my mom is an oncologist and obv we’re extremely well off…but why on earth is jeffrey star making more than her as she’s saving lives :( NOTHING MAKES SENSE ANYMOREEEE
Capitalism, and probably sexism.
its the culture in capitalistic places like america unfortunately, they value the football player more than the surgeon who will patch them up at the end of the day...strange.
at one point in time, entertainers had to be actually talented people-oriented creators (a hard thing to come by, even more so than doctors), which is why they were initially so highly paid and sought after.
It shouldn’t work like this, but unfortunately that how capitalism works.
i think about things like this daily, it’s genuinely so sad
The grass isn't greener on the other side, it's greener wherever you water it. This is my new mantra, especially for media!!! Thx
I feel like a lot of schools don't mention that trade schools are an option as well. Idk why they're so looked down on.
Most of us don't get 8 hours of sleep but yes.
Say it louder!!!
Writers with an unrelated day job unite!! 🎉
Girl you do you. No one should be spending their lifetime working and making someone else rich just so we can eat or at least pay rent.

you articulated all my thoughts so well.
I love the little breaks where you ask if we’re still watching! It’s very grounding and reminds me to focus on one things at a time :)))
i absolutely respect and agree with the “i’ll never feel bad for having a regular job and working for things”. even though it seems easier to be an influencer and do nothing to get millions on dollars, it’s more fulfilling to work for stuff. it’s more tiring and requires more energy and effort, but it’s more fulfilling putting in effort and getting rewarded instead of getting everything for free. also builds confidence and self efficacy
Tbh I feel super inflected about this discourse because it reminds me how older gens would discourage us from pursuing creative degrees/jobs.
Same ! So glad she finally found happiness ( i hope ) again ! Her mental health looks so much better now :)
“The grass is greener wherever you water it” so true ❤️
I love my job, I love the stability, I love having pension, I love having savings, I love being able to afford my apartment, I love the invaluable experience of working shifts at a hotel, which might seem tedious but it's actually fun and interesting, I will never share my life online cause the cost is not worth the reward, privacy is a privilege.
"The grass is greener wherever you water it" 😲😲 never heard truer words 👏🏻👏🏻 love your videos, Salem!! 😄❤
That's not the issue. People are lazy and they need attention. You have to LOVE attention and be a narcissist to be an influencer.
@@keeleyhank6812Wait till you realise Salem is also an influencer lol
Who is her sister
Uu who's her sister gimme a name i will take a look^^
@@c.m.leavemealonepenny Tovar she was a hair influencer
@ville__no one cares lol
That grass is not greener for me
"There is no shame in working hard for the things that you want"
PREACH is all I'm gonna say 🙏🏻
THANK YOUU why do ppl put influencers on a pedestal like that
The only thing I disagree with here is the meritocracy. 🦆✌️
Thank you for this one. I agree!
I was thinking the same thing
Never thought about how working hard vs hard work is very different! Good point!
"It's a symptom of such a larger problem."
Yep, you nailed it. Been looking for this one!!
Yessss!
Congrats on graduating!
Honestly though manifesting my office era
Damn i wish i could say that. I mean its stable yes but corporate world is making me honestly depressed.
And this is why all jobs should pay a living wage. We'd have a lot fewer shortages in essential but low paying fields since there are always people who would enjoy the work but don't think it's financially feasible
Adapt & evolve is all I can say. Never get too comfortable Jason is a good reminder of that.
I will never take advice from someone who could buy me
@ville__ ...came
'The grass is greener wherever you water it' girl, truthhhhh!
We appreciate how well you articulate your own insights. Keep working hard as always.
I really appreciate this video. Especially part 3, seeing people going after their dream job and going back to school. 😊❣
The grass is greener wherever you water it.. love that!
Will forever hate how I can’t play that hello kitty island game because id have to pay 5$ every month in the apple arcade. It’s just insane!
The grass is greener where ever you water it- beautifully said!
I love having a job. I owned my own business for awhile and it was going well but I hated it. I don’t live for my job and owning your business takes over your life, I imagine being an Influencer is the same. I really like having a start time, finish time, knowing exactly what my income is and having a separate personal and work life.
@@jaywan5553 omg I’m closing my business as well and my do I feel free?! Time to put this degree to use!
how tf did jason nash earn a living before vlog squad then?? hes way older than david dobrik. he must have had some kind of job and maybe/probably fumbled that pretty bad if hes not learned how to money and is trying to hang on to "influencer" money this hard
he's like over 50, he should have been working for decades
“The grass is greener where you water it.” I need that framed. That’s exactly what I needed to hear today.
You can not accept real advice from fake people.
I know Jimmy Kennel is a typo but that made me chuckle lol
I recently started working and in the beginning it’s scary putting yourself out there like that, but once you cross the threshold you realize that “oh, this isn’t as bad as i thought it would be”.
Most most influencers and celebrities are struggling financially or are broke in my eyes, because most of them arent acting a like clown online for free but definitely for cloud/PR
This is why I highly respect Salem she is aware that influencing is not glimmer and she actually has had a real job before! Great job Salem 🤗
