That pair just couldn't stop scoring that season. Manchester United looked almost home and hosed as champions when they won their first 11 league matches in a row,but then they started to come unstuck. That left the way for domination by Merseyside to continue, with Liverpool heading Everton for the title, but West Ham had a brilliant season. They didn't start too well but won 9 matches in a row between the later half of October and the first half of December, rising to feature in the top 3 behind United and Liverpool by late November. If anything the Hammers became even stronger in the closing weeks,a team to be feared by others in late March and April as they homed in on a 3rd place finish.
Division One table at end of 1985-86 season - top six (42 games played each): 1 Liverpool 88 points 2 Everton 86 3 West Ham 84 4 Manchester United 76 5 Sheffield Wednesday 73 6 Chelsea 71
I went there on what was the de facto last day of that season for both Chelsea and my team Watford,on May Day Bank Holiday Monday. We scored five past an extremely young rookie stand-in goalkeeper called Les Fridge,I think it was his only game for them. On the train back some Chelsea fans were talking about burning down Wimbledon (who'd just been promoted) next season.
Proof that football existed before the premier league. And no prima donnas complaining that it's too cold, wet or muddy. No rolling around play-acting either. Just as much skill and technique as today and just as entertaining. Sky ruined football
Technique, 🤣🤣it is kick and rush and battling for headers, the pitches don't help but the standard of football is light years behind. As for the stadiums you wouldn't keep a dog in those conditions as was proven decrepit deathtraps where you were stood out on a crumbing terrace in the pouring rain I know I did it at Stamford Bridge following Spurs.
So remind me just how good was Alan Devonshire , bloody amazing
I bet most Hammers supporters these days would love to see another partnership like Cottee & McAvennie back then !! 😎

I was at this game, Chelsea weren't at the races on that day, but the rest as they say, is history.
The day when West Ham took liberties on and off the pitch ⚒⚒
I remember this west ham side as a kid growing up, played carefree attacking football with an awesome partnership up front in Cottee/Mcavennie 🔥
Alan Devonshire!
The old Stamford Bridge was a dump.

West Ham should’ve won the league this year. If I remember they were beaten by the fixture pile up
George Parris in full flow!
He also shut the Chelsea fans up with the neanderthal Chanting everytime he touched the ball
I remember the train home that night pretty much bounced from Fulham Broadway to Mile End 🤣

This score line is somewhat becoming unbelievable
The late Peter Brackley is commentating the game. From Joe. X
Lets also remind ourselves we did this with Paul Hilton in the side! 😱
What a great season, I remember it well.
A time of long hair and short shorts.
Note to future West Ham Managers: This match is the academy of football
