What I find crazy is how many series he was doing/overlapping during that period of 90s/00s. Kind of makes you wonder if he was more focused on one what difference in quality in some of his pacing would be. None the less he is incredible achieving what he's done! Great video.

Pineapple Army is what got me admiring Naoki Urasawa-san's illustration. I've been collecting the 10-volume series since the '90s from local bookshops. His art is cartoony, with very clean lines on both foreground and background art that's very easy to the eyes.

Billy bat is so crazy. The story changes its direction to unexpected ways ALL THE TIME. Sometimes it can frustrate because you dont get the conclusion of that arc, but, in other hand it makes you be always engaged
There are some misexplained things about Billy, but the mistery really keeps you reading. I really like this manga

Hey, I'm actually in a scanlation team and we're thinking about picking up Yawara soon, cus it's one of my absolute fav mangas and I think it's a shame not many people can enjoy it. Anyway, I think something that's worthwhile to mention about Happy! is that the main cast is basically the Yawara cast but with inverse personalities. I caught that when I was reading through it and found it quite interesting, Urasawa even mentioned it in an interview once. Another interesting fact, it's that Happy! only came about because the publisher practically forced Urasawa to do another sports manga with a teenage girl due to Yawara's success, but at that period he just wanted to move on to do things that are more like drama or thriller. So, he intentionally made Miyuki suffer in Happy! as a way to kinda represent how he was feeling at the time, and he did get to make Monster not long after, so obviously it worked out. I still think it's interesting that Happy!'s entire existence is basically a reaction to Yawara's success.
Nice video btw, it's not often people dives into Urasawa's works so in-depth.

    • @profotaku
      @profotaku  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

This is great info! I had no idea that was how Happy came to be. I found out that the night Urasawa turned in the last chapter of Happy, they were doing a radio broadcast talking about "They are bringing us out of the 20th Century and into the 21st Century." Urasawa was like "Who's they?" And that's how he was inspired to start 20th Century Boys. He was gonna take a hiatus, but we got that instead haha.
I hope y'all continue with the scans. There is an interest out there!

I love knowing that someone has read billy bat and love it so much, the complex narrative, amazingly well done analysis of the psychology of these different characters that has influenced history, how the bat has done so as well, the impact of the external forces and how different historical events and characters could've changed with just a slight change, maybe even in other humans with how they view each other (Lee Harvey Oswald for example) it is truly a beuatiful story that gives redemption, reconciliation, his brilliant use of mystery and suspense, hope, and understanding, moving forward in life through the bad, and acceptance a way to shine and show people how these emotions could change yourself and the world through the eyes of the characters and the bat. It is a wonderfully written and powerful, impactful story, full of absolute joy, my personal favorite manga ever, I feel like people could learn a lot from this.

Naoki Urasawa is easily the most intellectually sophisticated mangaka. His ability to consistently produce stand alone masterpieces is really unbelievable.
I would put Monster at #1, but this is because the definitive way to experience Monster is the anime and not the manga. The anime has one of the most memorable soundtracks (nobody forgets that intro), and soft-spoken Johan being masterfully voiced by Nozomu Sasaki added to his character in a way that would not otherwise come through simply by reading pages of a book. I would put his other masterpiece Pluto at #2, and I think it isn't even worth mentioning the beautifully tragic North #2 arc having sound and melody.
Thanks for this video and bringing more attention to this most excellent author.

In my opinion Monster is 7/10. Sometimes the characters look very much alike, some plot lines are just way out of the main storyline, Johan's motives were somewhat ambigous to me like did he want to kill everyone because he loved killing or was it just because he was conditioned to become so, and the whole who was captured and taken to rose mansion was a blur to me. Maybe I read it too fast or just did not give more attention idk.

Watching the reviews made it super hype but everything I was expecting from the manga was not presented in a way I would be amazed or even perplexed, I was more so confused throughout the story than I was excited at a new twist. I think I should not have started with top tier expectations but if I say I wasn't hyped about Vagabond it would be false. I love Vagabond it's a piece of art.

@@basistagaurav yeah I hate how things get overhyped. Chainsaw Man was ruined for me by the hype.

@@profotaku I read all of Fujimoto's works before the hype and loved it.

Urusawa has the problem of writing and building up the story so immensely creating suspense but in the end tends to never give a satisfactory ending which is what makes him not the goat for me. He does have amazing work but for example 20th century boys the multiple reveals of friend ruins the story and suspense and weight of it. It gets boring Half way.

That's super interesting because I felt like 20th Century Boys stayed fresh, especially after the time skip

I haven't read the one shots or Japanese only releases, but personally Pluto is my least favorite of the ones I read, lower that Asadora or Master Keaton. I found Pluto to be much less nuanced and interesting than the others as a main theme is clearly a criticism of the Iraq war. I agree with that criticism, but it was just very obvious and more black and white than his other more complex works.

Honestly, I liked the more simplistic nature of his storytelling in Pluto. I feel like sometimes Urasawa's downfall is making the ending too complicated, so this just worked for me

@@profotaku he definitely has some trouble with endings and Pluto does better than others. I just expect more nuance and philosophy from him than we see from many of the main themes in Pluto.
Yet I'm shocked that I've seen no one discuss what seems so obvious to me. That Pluto is mainly a criticism of the Iraq War and bigotry against minorities. Again, I agree with that whole heartedly, it just doesn't seem particularly clever or interesting.
