After reading both 20th Century Boys and Monster and trying to find similarities and differences between the two, I wondered which of these Urasawa wrote first. To think he wrote BOTH at the same time is mind-boggling.

This blew my mind too. They also feel very thematically related with themes of lingering trauma, friendship, and redemption. Such deep works.

My favourite is Monster, by far. I absolutely loved the nuanced and sophisticated manner of which Urasawa explored themes such as personal identity, nature VS nurture, and the inherent darkness VS goodness of humanity. I was simply blown away by just how much character development is given to extremely minor characters, making every one of them feel like an actual person - regardless of whether we see them for a single arc, or even a single chapter. Johan was also a very captivating and unique villain, an enigma that ties the whole story together. Monster is undoubtedly a masterpiece, and I don't think it'll ever be dethroned as my favourite anime AND manga series of all time.
As for Urasawa's other series, I'd put Billy Bat second, followed by Pluto, and then 20CB. That's probably due to a lack of personal interest in sci-fi robots though, rather than a judgment of the stories themselves.
I also enjoyed Master Keaton and Mujirushi, but I wouldn't rank them anywhere near the same level of storytelling as the four series above.
Finally, with regards to Asadora, it kinda reminds me of a Ghibli film - we have a brave young woman as the protagonist, her quirky but kind-hearted family & friends, and of course, airplanes. I'm quite curious to see where this series goes, since it seems to be a mix of Urasawa's earlier works (sporty women SoLs) and his most acclaimed series (mystery/suspense thrillers).
Thanks for making this video! It's always great to see more discussion on Urasawa series.

Each and every work of Urasawa was perfection. And also Dr.Tenma's character really proved that you don't really need a fleshed out backstory to be a perfect written protagonist.

    • @Jestersage
      @Jestersage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Fair enough. I actually put Billy Bat below 20CB and Monster, since it start to go even more mythical. In fact for me, 20CB speaks more to me, namely as an adult. You watch them grow up and mature, and what childhood dream and moral they decide to keep vs what they decide to let go is what makes it attractive.

20th Century Boys has always been one of my favorite manga of all time for the sheer amount of passion and eccentricity going into every facet of it. The way music, manga, professional wrestling, theme parks, giant robots, esp, and so much other insane stuff blend together to create this insane yet heartfelt and grounded story centered around theme of regret and age is just incredible. If any of Urasawa's works were to get the translation treatment I'd love for it to be Yawara

I recently started buying the 20th century boys Perfect edition volumes (got the first two, waiting for 3 and 4 and I plan to buy the rest till the end of the year). Urasawa is one of the greatest mangaka of all time. His stories are genius. My only nitpick would be that a majority of his series all have the same art style, specifically the character designs. It isn't exactly a bad thing because I really like the art style. However, it does make it hard to instantly know which characters are from what series, since a lot of them are very similar. It does make his art style very recognisable tho haha

Urasawa obviously know where is stories are going but there's a real flow to the way he layers his stories with twists, red earings, wholesome character moments there are a lot of Urasawa tropes it even gets grading when you read two series back to back yet it feels effortless. It works so well but it's kind of always the same kind of scenes, his way of telling his stories is very efficient and always works in the same ways with the particular narratives being strong enough to hold it up together. All of this to say, I'm not so surprised to learn Monster and Twentieth Century Boys were done concurrently, they really are done the same and have a lot of those Urasawa tropes I wouldn't be surprised if some storyboards were used for both series. I have not read his earlier works but since those seems to be his first thriller stories and those tropes being strong in Pluto and Billy Bat it would make sense to me that working on two mistery series at the same time cemented this way of storytelling.

I've watched Monster Anime and I love Johan's Complexity as a villain and then I read 20th century boys. The way how plot moves is simply mind blowing & the unstoppable rush I had during the read of this story is the 2nd time I had reading a manga. 1st is Berserk

Hey, Monster is in my top three anime of all time. I’m now thinking of getting 20th century boys, would you recommend? I’m getting mixed reviews all over regarding this manga. Some say it’s good some say the 2nd half and ending is not good and it’s a drag. So I’m kinda confused. I enjoyed monster , tho in anime format.

@@mariovelan7380 20th century boys is actually good. The problem is during the ending things go a bit differently. Sometimes you wonder if it's practically possible but overall the antagonist is amazing. 20th century boys is a great story. Definitely worth reading

@@suraajgogeta5390 quick question the ending can you say it’s like attack on Titan? Maybe not story wise but you know like there’s a crowd that hate the ending for attack on Titan, because it’s not what they expected … I personally loved the ending and understood what the creator was trying to say. You think someone like me probably will have no issues with the ending if it ended somewhat like AoT? I know it’s a weird question to have, about to commit some serious money on 20CB just want to know if it’s worth it. Loved monster and Pluto too btw. Was genuinely going to go in blind with this series then started seeing all this mix reviews and was kinda caught off guard. Sorry for the lengthy essay. 😅

@@mariovelan7380 tbh it's not that bad. When I read 20th century boys I don't know there people were people thinking the ending is bad. Infact even in the final arc there are good moments for important characters & there are good plottwists aswell. In the end I'd say I really liked it. So it depends on how a reader thinks.

Monster got me hooked, 20th Century Boys got me invested. Pluto convinced me that Urasawa is indeed the real deal. All three series on their own are masterpieces, but then you add in the fact that they all share the same manga-ka - 🤯. Urasawa is a true legend, and I for one cannot wait to get my hands on more of his work.
On that note, I notice this video dropped sometime before the Netflix Pluto anime was even announced. I trust you've watched it by now. Funny thing, even though I'd already read the manga, that scene at the end of episode 1, where Geshict meets Atom - hit me right in the feels, man. 🥲 I hadn't grown up with Astro Boy, and was only vagueness familiar with the series, despite having read quite a bit of Tezuka's other works. To finally see Atom, this absolute legend among characters in the medium, on the screen for the first time, in a place where he was taken seriously... For real, I was in tears. It was like meeting your favorite actor or musician in person. Absolutely incredible series, see it if haven't already!

Monster and 20th Century Boys being written at the same time is so interesting, because it's not the first time some of the best outputs of a comic writer happen back to back/simultaneously. I remember looking at Alan Moore's publications before he went back to America and can you imagine that he was doing V for Vendetta and his Miracle Man at the same time too? Of course he had artists doing work and Lloyd co-wrote V for Vendetta with him but... Holy crap how can someone do this lmao? Frank Miller as well like, he had just came out of The Dark Knight Returns and than bang, Born Again comes out. Ridiculous. Despite their health being a serious matter I think it's a matter of flow state, idk. You're so caught up with it that you just can't stop or if you stop you know it's not gonna be the same.

My alltime favorite Urazawa is Monster. Johan to me is one of the most interesting Manga villains (with berserks Griffith and others), when it comes to his psychology and how he is omnipresent despite rarely showing up. I remember more than half of the anime was over when Tenma first sees him in daylight😂. I am german, so I feel like knowing all the places and being able to read all the German words even took something away from tenmas feeling of alienation and from the overall experience, even my tiny ass hometown gets a mention on one page (I still don’t understand how urazawa even got to know the name and other places unless he visited Germany some times), which was really weird. But still, i love the story and how it questions if monsters are born that way or created. Love it. The Manga and the anime adaptation, despite being a little slow burn.
Billy Bat actually has a German physical release which is cool, i hope there will be an englisch version soon!

Edit: without spoiling anything, i know a lot of people were dissatisfied with the ending of Monster. I thought it was perfect. The characters stayed true to themselves until the very end which resulted in said ending. It was courageous, i think, to let it end that way as it should be expected that a lot of people would be upset with it.
