How to enable 'Arm on Selection' for tracks if you don't have a MIDI keyboard or pad controller connected to Ableton: manuals.morningstar.io/mc-midi-controller/Ableton.645595137.html#Ableton-EnablingArmonSelectioninAbleton
i've been recording in Pro Tools a lot lately, and when i figured out i could do this with my MC6, suddenly tracking my parts got a lot easier and less frustrating... i could stay in my place, instrument in hand, and just hit STOP and then REC to do another take. other buttons (and long presses) create a new (or duplicate) playlist, turn click & pre-roll on/off, record enable the track, and Undo. it's been really relaxing and has helped my recording flow a lot.
I want to thank you so much for your helpful tutorials! This was a primary reason I bought the MC8: not only to control my midi-enabled guitar pedals but also because Morningstar has the best support in the world, not only helping you to understand the product deeply but also going above and beyond to inspire you to use the equipment to improve your workflow and creative ideas! I hit a bit of a wall with my MC8 while trying to record in Ableton before I stumbled upon this video. 😍🤯!!!
I'm stuck at Midi mapping 5:54. Ableton sees the Keystroke buttons but not the midi map ones. 😭😭 Note also that MC8 shows up as input and output device but noe as a control surface?

Hi. From 3 August 2021, we moved to LCD screens with white backgrounds for the MC8. The Quality Control reject rate of the previous black ones was getting too high and we could not continue to use them. We changed all our product photos to reflect this change in color as well. Since then we've also had some customers ask how they can change their black screens to white (and vice versa). Both colors work great but the QC rejection rate was something we could no longer accept.
Hi! As a guitarist with only 2 hands i want to trigger the pads of a DrumRack in ableton. Is it possible with the Morningstar? and how? Thanks!!! Sarah from NL
Hi. Yes, you can do that by sending MIDI Note messages from your Morningstar Controller to Ableton. It will be like triggering the drum rack with a MIDI keyboard, but with your feet.
You can only do that if your plugin allows you to send out custom MIDI messages when you click to change states. However, we are not aware of any plugins that allow this. They usually do not send out any data when you make changes to them on the computer. Therefore there is no information for the MIDI controller to receive and update its states.
@@MorningstarEngineering thx for the response. that's unfortunate. i understand if the MC6 pro would be identified as a Control Surface, that would help somehow. 1)any plans for Control Surface support 2) if not, any suggested workarounds? thx!
If I'm using an audio interface with MIDI already attached to computer, can I just send MIDI to the interface from the MC8 to control Ableton? Or does it have to be the USB from MC8?
@@MorningstarEngineering Thank you. My plan was to send MIDI out of the interface to the MC8 (in case I want to later have Ableton send CC messages to MC8) and then through my pedals and back to the interface for both programming the MC8 and controlling Ableton by foot. Any issues with that you think?
@@seandavidharris You can do that all just by connecting the MC8 with a single USB cable to your computer. You can relay MIDI from the USB port out through the MIDI outputs. You do not need the MIDI interface.

Great video. I need a way to just select a scene but not launch it without using the scene up and down switches. Live situation I can’t see the laptop. So I want to name a switch the name of the scene. When I click it I only want it to select the scene but not launch it. I want to use the dedicated play button to launch scenes when ready. Is this possible? Thank you
Answering my own question I guess I could just launch scene but put a brief delay or pause then stop the scene. Then when band is ready launch again. Would be easier if ableton would just make it possible to just select the scene or launch the scene.
Hi. You need to click on disconnect device on the Morningstar editor first before the keystroke commands will get sent. This is to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted editing experience.
Why do you use those specific cc numbers for those particular commands? Why can you get away with eg using cc number 13 for multiple different commands, yet eg when it comes to selecting scenes 1-4 a different cc number is used for each one?
You can use any CC number you want as long as each switch sends a unique CC number. It does not matter because each number will be mapped to whatever function you want to control.
Thanks for the great video. If I'm using MIDI map mode in Ableton to map Ableton controls to my MC6 Pro, does it matter which cc values I assign to each message/preset in the Morningstar editor?
It may or may not matter depending on the function you are trying to control. For eg some functions are enabled with values 64-127 and disabled with values 0-64.
Any way to get the "next scene name" to the controller? I would love to integrate the MC8 in my live setup to control the Mac in the back.
