    Regarding path changes on the fly, I've created an instrument rack with a bunch os different instruments, just as you did. But for each instrument layer I use not a range but a single number in the chain lane. It would be impossible to pick instruments on the fly with a knob, so I have assigned midi cc in Launchpad Mini with specific single values, instead of the tradicional 0 - 127. There's a pad that sends just value 0, other sends value 1 and so on. Finally, the cursor in the chain lane is mapped to macro knob. Then, when I hit a pad on the Launchpad Mini, the macro knob moves in one by one increments, moving the lane's cursor and changing instruments. It is a good idea to map the on/off button of each instrument to the same macro knob, so they won't keep on when not selected, saving a lot of cpu power.

      I've also seen a similar set up done and they used a knob to move between Chain selections and instruments...works with plugins and the simpler too

    At 10:40 you can make dummy clips & change the chain selector to a specific instrument so that you tap the clip instead of turning a nob to change the instrument 👍

    Agree on the instrument rack selector which could have easily been simplifed by Ableton . A very useful feature to select and layer multiple instruments without having to rely on a knob . In fact it must be possible to combine any instrument on a rack with just having toggle buttons . They could simply allow adding buttons in the instrument rack enabling the selection of a specific instrument , it would have been very much simpler.

    hey man nice video :) about the chain as intrument switcher you could actually create a group with the only purpose to have multiple sounds across the chain , assign the chain switcher to a macro rotary fader and then snapshot different positions of that fader, then you can midi map each snapshot to some midi controller button and recall the sounds with precision not risking to land somwhere wrong... hope it helps

    Chain Selector - Simply assign a range of pads with the same cc number and set the individual pad values to 0-7, 8-15, 16-31 etc and map that cc to the chain select. You can then chose any instrument instantly without having to scroll through the list.

    Nice video. Thanks a lot. Separation of the areas of tasks in different MIDI devices makes total sense. Where did you collect your samples, for instance the voice seem to be a perfect fit for this work. Did you create it or matched the rest of the music to an existing voice sample? I haven't got to the Ableton Live yet. I am a Pro Tools guy and lay ideas in lots of tracks and regions and play them afterwards rather than in real time. However I enjoy spontaneity of this work approach. I was working a bit on Bitwig not long ago. I heard some people say Bitwig is sort of like Ableton Live. Some people prefer Ableton Live and some Bitwig. Not quite sure what the pros and cons of each one is but for sure they offer way more options for creativity around looping ideas that may otherwise be hard to do with Pro Tools: recording tracks and playing them back and stacking many tracks and regions in linear fashion. Cheers!

    • @Taetro
      @Taetro  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I dip into Splice and Landr for samples so the vocal came from one of those I think. I’m no bitwig expert but I know people who love it! Also it was created by former Ableton folks

  • @hacksparamusicos
    @hacksparamusicos ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding what you mentioned about the chain selector and not using more than 2 sounds... I think you could actually use up to 3. This way, when you have the knob all the way to the left, it would be "sound 1," in the middle "sound 2," and to the right "sound 3." Well, this is assuming your knobs aren't infinite :P

    • @hacksparamusicos
      @hacksparamusicos ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to use the chain selector to switch between sounds using a button of your controller, it can be done.
      1. Map the chain selector to Macro 1.
      2. Take snapshots of each position where Macro 1 knob should be for each sound.
      3. Map a MIDI trigger of each snapshot (from the play button) to the button you want to use for sound switching.
      I just did it :D

    • @hacksparamusicos
      @hacksparamusicos ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also map «select previous/next snapshot»

    • @MrJulesdj
      @MrJulesdj ปีที่แล้ว

      You also can set all the sounds at the same position and map the volume on button to any pad of the keyboard so you can actually use as many instrument as pads of your midi controller has :) ... each pad will function as a on/off button for each sound ::: also with the launch key mini you are able to turn the light of the pads on or off so you can see what of the sounds are on or off. XD... cheers

    Hey mate, thanks for the cool short video.
    It would be great if you (or somebody) could help me with a Question: The APC-Faders controll the channel faders. However in.a non-live set I am used to only controlliing a Utility on the fly to not f* up automations and to keep the relative volumes straight --> Does it make sense to also do this with the APC? Or are you just fine by generally adjusting the channel-faders and trust your ear and the monitors to get the volumes on the PA right? Don't have the experience to really answer this myself.

      If you have a midi controller with a sustain port you can map the sustain pedal to the session record button

    • @GuitarHugo
      @GuitarHugo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, I use a cheap usb foot switch that's normally used to control a computer keyboard. Use a computer keyboard shortcut for session record (I chose the "R" key) and then bind the usb foot switch to that letter. In Ableton select "Key" (at the top right), press the foot switch and voila...Works exactly the same as assigning a sustain pedal, except that in the case of the sustain pedal you chose "midi" at the top right. I did it this way to spare my sustain pedal input for,.... a sustain pedal :-). There is one problem however with both methods. As long as you work with a clip in the first scene, you can launch record. You can however only choose to record in the clips below it by launching their "record" another way; by clicking the clip or bib using a controller. You CAN close the loop with the pedal from there on!

      @@Taetro legend has it Arturia include a program called "MIDI Control Center" that allows you to send individual pads to different MIDI channels. I've ordered Keylab 49 MkII and a Motu M4 interface. I'm considering the Launchpad X paired with a Launch Control XL since the MPC40 MkII does the same thing but more expensive- I've read they have more uses outside of Ableton Live than the MPC40 MkII/APC Mini. Hoping the pad mapping through MIDI control center eliminates the need for a small 4x4 for sound effects. I'll be using it to try making microhouse/ambient house/liquid D&B live.

But when I do that, the control doesn't change and the corresponding track volume just moves... WTF why is MIDI so unnecessarily complicated? It's a Novation controller it should come set up to be simple with Ableton Live, but they decided I must always use the knobs as volume, and not as synth controls like all the artists on youtube. What a strange, strange factory default decision to LOCK the knobs to track volume and tell people nothing about how to change it

      be careful about getting overly frustrated. It’s not unnecessarily complicated, you’re just missing some foundational knowledge. If you continue with that mindset, making music in Live is going to be incredibly frustrating.

      Also everything about the launchkey default configuration can be found in its manual, and it is quite useful to have a track volume mode

      @@Taetro yeah now I remember, you need to have an instrument rack on the track to then control with the knobs. I'm sorry but it's just frustrating that they advertise " MIDI learn" features then arbitrarily decide that THOSE KNOBS specifically won't respond to normal MIDI learn mapping workflow. That's dumb. I design interfaces and I could have told them it's dumb

    Great Video! Agree with you on the chain selector not being very intuitive. I've seen people us dummy clips to change the chain selector values, and then you should be able to launch those clips with the APC. I've seen this done on the SPD-SX from behind a drumset. It still takes quite a bit of set up which sucks, but this method might give more flexibility than a knob if you have multiple patches. This video gives a decent explanation. th-cam.com/video/19BNu0zsGAo/w-d-xo.html

      now that i'm thinking about it this might not work if youre launching full scenes, unless you make sure to include whatever patch you want in that scene, or no dummy clip in that scene so it doesnt change.
