There are bad teachers there are teachers, and then there is the great teacher. I’ve been playing golf for about eight years. I’ve watched you ever since I started golf. i’m 65 years old and I have a single digit handicap goes from a 4 to 8 consistently. You are a great teacher thank you. you are a great teacher.
ball forward, slightly open body and clubface, weight on front foot, swing down and left aggressively half back half through. Easy peasy. If you catch it perfect it'll come out low take one hop and stop dead.
Excellent instruction on a shot that gives most amateurs fits! Your process follows pretty much exactly what P. Harrington demonstrated on his short game tips! Great stuff!
Thanks for the tips Matt! Finally gotten a golf membership, but until recently been just bump and running in most scenarios, will practise these tips! Love the content!
Hey Matt, you used to promote a slight twist of the grip during the downswing on these shots. Do you still do this? Is there a certain shot where you need this and others that don't? Thanks for all your great videos
Hey bro. The tip about the ball being off the front foot is slightly misleading. Once you couple that with the last tip, which is to open your body to the target, it basically moves the ball to be more in the back of the stance relative to your new body position. (The ball technically is still off your front foot since your front foot is still in a similar location at 90° from the pin to ball to foot, but once you open your body to target the impact position in your stance is further back, near your back foot) Especially once you open body which means you need to open the club face some, the risk to blading a shot across the green is much higher since the leading edge is raised if you haven’t adjusted the ball to be closer to off your back foot at impact. I’m not saying it can’t be done off the front foot, but the probability for your average golfer to hit a nice high shot cleanly has gone down and the risk of blading it has gone up. Maybe it’s just me, but I have a feeling most higher handicaps will struggle if they try to keep the ball near their front foot (relative to impact position)
Ya, I'm a bit confused about that tip. I do appreciate the idea of not putting it WAY back in the stance but I just had a lesson today with a PGA professional and they had me setup with the ball a single ball-length back from the middle of my stance. This was a pretty beginner-friendly lesson and he wasn't providing this instruction because of something I was doing poorly but just as a general instruction.
Since I’m such a poor approach shot player, I have decades of experience from this distance. I have no issues. Unless there is a bunker in front of me, I can pitch anything on the green from 100 yds in. I almost never use anything more than a 50* wedge. Out to 100 I use gap, pw, 9, 8, depending on distance. If I couldn’t do that I’d shoot in the 90s. Excellent lessons here though. I remember 1 round where I only hit four greens in regulation and shot a 76. My entire game revolves around chipping and putting.
Man your explanations are just so enlightening. The whole force/velocity vector thought resulting from the off line stance and inside swing appeals to my physical sense of the shot. 🤙
I have a question sir. I have a gap 56 with 12 bounce a 60 with a 10 bounce and 53 in my closet with a 10 bounce. I’m thinking about switching out my 56 for my 53 and getting it bent to a 55. What do you think?
I recall watching one of your other " short shot " videos and you explained it is critical to always open the wedge club face.. does that still hold true?...thanks
I think it really depends on the situation, if you want to hit a higher shot like a pitch or a flop maybe opening it up can give you more loft to land the ball at a steeper decent angle or move over an obstacle like an bunker. It all comes down to the type of shot your hitting, and the situation you are in, not opening the club face should be fine for a pitch if you have enough loft

Getting over a bunker or a small lake is my worst nightmare because I always shank my chips. Therefore I bought myself a 35 degrees chipper, but I can’t use that in those situations. I will go and practise your tips right away.
Obviously there are a lot of variables to answer this question, but what degree is best for most situations at that 40-50 mark? I used to have a 58 degree, got rid of it and have a 56 and 60, and can’t find that sweet spot yet with either
Like you said, lots of variables! First you have read the lie of the ball, how is it sitting? Next it depends on what the shot calls for. Where is the pin, how much green do you have to work with, how firm is the green, what is the situation ( are you in a tournament/playing for score or a good time with friends?) If you have plenty of green play the lower shot (higher %) and allow the ball to run more, even using pw 9 8 7. If you have to play the ball higher or have less green then use the more lofted club or play the shot with the 56 but open it up to make it 58 59 60. Also some fun ways to improve short game and pitching, choke down on the club and get tighter to the ball on shots you need a little more spin on. Being tighter to the ball keeps tighter rotation but keeps the speed up for more spin. Also learn how to hit multiple clubs from that forward ball position he was demonstrating. That will allow you to play more shots from that 40-50 yd distance with all those variables and even depending on the wind too! Hope this helps!!
@@pewithjc I think half of golf is what you’re used to or comfortable doing. I easily shaved 5-6 strokes by not using traditional chipping and just doing bump and runs with my p wedge lol. If I need loft I just place the ball more towards the back of my stance. I play in a league at work with around 400 golfers and I can’t tell you how many times guys have asked how the hell I chip like I do with a p wedge lol. I still use my 60 if I have bunker shots or I NEED a nice flop.
The guys I play with get this shot 8-10x per round. When they are out 240 the don't hit an easy 7 about 140-150 and leave a flat lie in short grass. Nope! The slice a 3w 210, hit cart path and land in 3" grass out 30y on a sidehill lie shooting over a bunker.
Get your right hand on top and open the face. If you do that , the face has to stay open. The right hand is already on top. Address with the club vertical and just return it. Short sided chip/pitch shots will float up and stop . Good stuff
I put balls in the bunker 9 out of 10 in such situation. No Kidding... 😵 Oh so what happens in 1 out of 10? , I put the ball on the other side of the green.
Phil Mickelson plays chips with the ball off his back foot and pitches with the ball off his front foot. But what does he know about the short game anyway?
I like everything you said but would like to see you demonstrate on real grass, not a mat. Yes, a bad shot can be hit from a mat but it’s much easier to hit decent shots than on grass. The club will not dig in on a mat. No, I’m not interested in seeing you hit a fatty or scull a shot, but the viewer appreciates you hitting shots in similar conditions that we hit from. When we see you hit off real grass it will give us confidence that we can too.
Just a thought, maybe use more positive opening, Do This from 40 Yds. Your videos lately, although informative, begin with a negative intro. Good instructions otherwise.

One man’s easy peasy is another man’s double bogey.
I’m another man
Thanks for the advice, I will use it tomorrow on the course.

Really love your videos Matt. Short and to the point.
Love this. I am getting fit for wedges too so I will be practicing a lot more.
i got fitted and its a world of difference

Thank You for some more short game content
This guy really does produce excellent content. I've never seen a video of his that I thought of as unhelpful
I practice this shot all the time on my SkyTrak with E6 Connect. I use my gap wedge usually unless I’m going over a bunker and need spin.
thank you
thanks for the tips
Great!
This was amazing thank you!

You had a video about a month ago with a towel for scrubbing clubs and golf balls. Can you resend the link for this product?
The key to all of this is you must first know where the bottom of your swing is and then you must be able to control where it is
I use 54 deg, ball fwd in stance, weight fwd, backswing - hands to hip area.

You’re going to want at least a 52 degree in your bag, preferably higher for 40 yard shots you need to get over a bunker or water and make it stop.

for sure, its what youre comfortable using.

With Course with Elevated Greens Like Atlanta National that first thing not to do is very important.
Hey Matt, great video! Question for you: do you typically open the club face a little to expose the bounce on these 40-50 yard shots? Thanks!
Yes all the time.
Have not seen you in a while, love your energy and simple instruction. Thanks!

a smooth 64 deg. wedge goes about 40 yards for me... I struggle from 40 yards with any other club.
My biggest issue is always the line between accelerating the head of the club, and flipping the head of the club. On all shots not just 40 yarders.
Matt, for your next lesson can you show us how you magically appear at the 4:22 mark!
@ClubProGuy sent me. 😊
I don't have control at 40 yds. Might it hit 20 yds or maybe 60 yds...
Future collab with the Good Good Guys?
wearing cool shoes helps too. 😎
You’re in the bunker and the party begins… 💀
Hinge and hold baby watch Phil Mickelsons video it’s gold
Shank city! 😂
Also keep your wrist firm don't flip it and a straight left arm
Ace,handicap,putt,drive,fuff,Mulligan,hole,bogye,put,caddy
keep aiming left until you put a divot in your ceiling, then you know it's money
I admit I haven't watched every video this guy's done, but I do hope someday to see him wearing the "BAD" hat.
Get to the 5 points already! Too much chit chat

Phil Mickelson plays chips with the ball off his back foot and pitches with the ball off his front foot. But what does he know about the short game anyway?
He only does that when he wants low traj. There's plenty of vids of him talking about chipping off his front foot when he wants more height.
@@paulguyot9318 Wouldn't be a youtube guru if he didn't contradict himself with his tips, eh?
