    9:28 I’ve need hitting a 5 and 4 hybrid, not 5/4 long irons. After watching this video, I’m going to order the replacements. Being 61 I don’t have the swing I had previously, but after watching this lesson I feel confident that I can make the change. Thank you for the video.

    Wow, I've been golfing for about 7 years, and I never played an iron over a six because I just couldn't hit it clean or straight. Then I bought a simulator and got some advice from a guy that I play golf with frequently.
    This is what he taught me. I started practicing on my simulator. This is great advice, I'm hitting higher shots than I used to, and It got my ball spin down really low, I get more rollout on my shots too I noticed.

    Mid iron 7 por 6 iron on middle fairway short of green is best for 200 yards as you get better scores by last up and chip than take your 4 or 3 iron and go OB, bush, thick rough or bunker

    Yay I don't feel insane anymore. This is my feel for long irons - feeling like I am using the bounce/sole. My friends tell me it is crazy but it works wonders for me as I naturally have more of a tendency to hit compressed trap shots. Great video!

      I did the same thing. Hybrids (19 and 22) have replaced my 3 and 4 irons which I've never been able to hit well. I'm thinking of getting another hybrid to replace the 5 iron as well.

    • @jeffsharp104
      @jeffsharp104 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@johnnyh3653 mine actually replaced 5, 6 and 7 irons, I have Callaway Mavrik irons that are very strong lofted 7 27°, 6 24° and 5 21°. Originally I went from 3 wood to 5 iron too big of a gap that why I got the 18° hybrid. I have actually put the 7 iron back in the bag because I was hitting the 27° hybrid 10 yards further than 7 iron and left a gap to 8 iron, so I have 2 27° degree clubs in the bag. Sorry long winded.

  • @AllTradesGeorge

    Yeah...my 200yd shot is a soft 5 wood/strong 4 hybrid...
    "DON'T play the draw..." If I bank on a draw, I hit dead straight at least half the time. If I bank on hitting straight, I hit a draw about half the time. Consistency is (one of) my weak point(s)...
    But even if I'm not playing a long iron, this has given me some pointers about what to avoid on long shots (and not just ~200yds!)

    I used to go for the 200 yard approach shot, but found my accuracy to be poor. So I started hitting a seven iron 175 leaving me the ability to chip one in closer and it has improved my game big-time. Laying up is way underrated. But great video as always Mr. SG.

    • @MrGroovergeorge
      @MrGroovergeorge 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Laying up is often a better way to go for most golfers. Carrying a long iron to the green often can find you in a rear bunker and that's providing you hit it well.

    Why is it that you shouldn't have shaft lean at address with any club? I've heard this from my instructor but didn't think to ask why. Other folks talk about shaft lean at set up to encourage de-loft in the swing. I put your ideas to work on the range and on the course today and it worked out great. I tend to get a bit nervous with 5 iron and 6 iron so always looking for tips. Thanks for the video.

    I got nuthin from 200. I don’t have a club I can hit reliably from there. I’m much better off hitting a nine iron and a wedge to get down from there.

  • @sdiver68
    @sdiver68 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is an area I can definitely improve, although your 200 is my 180. I have few problems off a tee or fluffy lie, but how do you hit these off tight, hard lies like dormant fairway grass in the Winter? It seems like all my adjustments for these conditions...move ball back in stance, trap ball for compression, forward shaft lean, steeper swing, etc... run counter to what you are trying to achieve here.

  • @stevenjames9487
    @stevenjames9487 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Forward shaft lean looks like the first position before the back swing the moment the club is leaves the ground. It also looks like the last position the before contact. The further I hit the ball the more people try to correct my swing. Hmm maybe i need heavier stiffer shafts so i catch the ball sooner than supplementing with shaft lean.

    Golf can be easy you know.
    Instead of taking his advice, never hit a 200+ yard shot into the green (off the ground) if your handicap is above 5.
    Don't care if it is a par 5, par 4 or par 3. Accept your deficits.
    Instead, hit a 160-180 yard shot, if it works. Then chip and putt from there.
    You will save 4-5 shots per round doing this.
    Note: most trouble is very close to the green, but there is often a wide open space about 15 yards shot, unless you are hitting over a hazard.
    You then practice your 40 yard chips/pitches and give yourself a putt for par on every hole.
    What would you pay for a 10 yard or less par putt guaranteed on every hole?
    Make good decision and score better (Until you get bored of playing like this, me, and just start hitting at the hole and playing for birdies).
    Also, don't hit irons 200+ yards off the ground and avoid 100% of his mentioned problems.
    Just hit down on that 5 wood like it's a short iron and have fun! 😊

    I play my best golf, have the best scores and have the best time… when I’m out on the course and “Don’t think about golf at all” I get to my ball,knowing the yardage, and pull my club take one practice and then hit. Perfect shot 90% of the time. The moment I think about what I’m doing…my game is over. I call it “Dumb it down golf”. Don’t think too much, just know what you want the ball to do and where to go and do it. Another thing I do is go out and say no more than 2 putts on any green. After a round or 2 doing this and voilà… your putting is fixed. No more 3 putts as it fixes your lagging. It’s magical. Try it.

  • @mem30075
    @mem30075 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah...not bad advice... for myself I replaced my 4i with 4/5/H that depending on the lie/distance makes sense. Although at times will use a 6/7i instead and then just chip on green if needed. Whatever I feel will be more accurate within 200Y/or less.

    Hey Sir,
    Been a huge fan of yours for years, and I have been wondering if you could expound on how to hit a low iron shot? Perhaps not necessarily a “stinger”, or a punch shot, but something that lowers the trajectory. I have this one hole that gets me (a stupid tree branch that sticks out) and I am forced to go low and still get the ball to the 200 yard mark. It is a dog leg left, with a steep drop at the turn that’s 235 to the hole, adjusted.
    Any thoughts on how to lower a 4/5 iron shot that still goes 200 yards?

    I’m a little confused by this. Everything I see is all draw, draw, draw because that’s a more powerful stroke and it’s the natural path of the club. If I’m opening the face and fading it, it’s not going to be solid and I’m not going to get the distance. Why would I want a fade from 200 if I want a draw from 150 and 250 (with the driver)?

    • @AllTradesGeorge
      @AllTradesGeorge 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lot of YT golf videos are information overload. I discovered golf tutorials/coaching videos about seven years ago (I've only been playing for ten years)...when I started, I gained a good 40-50yds on my driver...so I dove headlong down the rabbit hole. Got so much information overload that I started playing worse than when I first started, overanalyzing every swing I stepped up to and second-guessing every choice I made. I went from consistently playing 20-25 over par to routinely playing +35. I'm only just now getting to the point where I'm occasionally breaking 100, and I'm only occasionally watching videos like this, now.
      If I could get my game from 50yds to the hole as solid as my game from the tee to 50yds, I might actually be a serious threat on the course. Unfortunately, there's precious few self-help videos for that and most of them are even worse as far as information overload.

You should gain 2-4 mph and gain some height with all your shots. Oh left leg, is not using ground pressure much. It's late and no pressure. Left leg/knee is slightly bent. Another 2-4 mph lost.
