....can't emphasise enough how reassuring it is to know that even for you not everything goes perfect the first time. Thanks for sharing all aspects of your training/competitions and good luck next time :)
Kudos for posting this Kristian, As a coach, I have got to tell you how I see it: - You need to focus a lot more on run-tapering. You can get away with it for shorter distances, but anything beyond 5k the load in the last few days has to be quite low, especially if you dont taper the bike and the other stuff. In a good taper the last hard session for a 10k is normally some 10/14 days before the race; after that you are mostly managing your legs; -I think your last track session over the weekend (2000/1000 & 400s) was a mistake, especially the 1k reps done at I guess your 5k effort. Too close to the race and the recoveries way too short. I think you lost an awful amount of leg tension after that -Looking at your Strava that shakeout on race day was probably too long and too slow -Your cramping could have had something to do with your hydration plan before the race (a sports drink with electrolyte is normally a better bet before the race) -Also it could have had something to do with that shoe on the track. Too soft, not too good at cornering and probably not designed to run at that pace in the first place (you can get better grip with other flats if you dont want to use spikes. Some of the long distance spikes on the markets are basically road flats with pins for better traction). I think you will most certainly run under 28'20" with a good solid plan in the run-up to it. The bottom line is for a 10000 you need to be relatively rested to squeeze the max out of it. Notice also how Moen got beaten a couple of weeks after his record in a relatively slow time for him. Sorry to have been brutally honest with you.
He’s not a runner, he’s not going to majorly alter his regimen just to win some random local 10k. Cramps and hydration/electrolytes is not science, most likely just exhaustion. Shoes wise I don’t think it really matters that much tbh.
barebare He is still a sub 14 5k “non-runner”. Maybe you are correct about not wanting to majorly alter his regime to win a local race, but I wouldn’t say this is a local race by any means. If he wants to set a pr, he should do these things Amazing time anyway!
322aareyn No one knows why we get cramps, most likely heat and exhaustion/glucose depletion. Taking in salts of electrolytes won’t help in the healthy as we are already in homeostasis. In the severely ill there might be a benefit fx kidney disease. Hydration also doesn’t matter, as you don’t get severely dehydrated in such a short race. Of course, the supplement industry would like this pseudoscience to continue, and I see there are lots of science illiterate people in videos such as these.
Respect Kristian; you put it all on the line - great to see such authenticity and transparancy. Fantastic entertainment - this is the best Sports Vlog.
Thanks for sharing, in a strange way it's motivational to see that things go wrong even with the very best and well trained athletes. Best of luck with hitting your goals over the next couple of weeks and looking forward to see you do it!

On to the next one. Disappointing, but everybody has races likes that. You will figure it out with your coach and hopefully will be stronger next time. I like how your goals are super-difficult, yet still attainable. Also thanks for sharing your thoughts on races that went wrong. They present the best learning opportunities.
Man I know it is late for this video in particular but thanks for sharing like this... To have this level of access coming from this level of athlete, I can only say thank you : ) Greetings from Uruguay!!!
Kristian, thanks for posting this - few are brave or mature to show both the ups and downs of racing. These slightly longer races may require a bit more of a taper before you go 'full bore' for a target 10k time. I see no failure - only racing lessons. Better to learn them while you are still relatively young. I've been running and racing for just under 47 years, started to really figure it out when I was about 40, by then it was a little too late to gain the maximum benefit of my experiences. I look forward to watching your next race!
I feel for you - after putting in so much effort recently it must be infuriating for this to happen. Hopefully the anger will carry you to even greater heights when you attempt the 10,000 in the next two weeks 😉. Really love the channel; you’re a humble champion and seem like an allround good guy - keep it up 🙌
Don't be too hard on yourself Kristian.... you're not far away... and looked comfortable in the first 5k... A few "fast" efforts will get you there... :)
Its not failing.... no... it's inspiration.... you did your best... it can only benefit you to achieve continuous improvement! Thx 4 super motivation Greetings Albertus
Following you all way from South Africa...here is what I always say when athletes have done all the "right" preparations and it did not go their way..."no athlete go out looking to have a bad race...some-times a bad race will find you"....and every-one has to have a bad race some-where...rather have it in a none-important race than in an important race....
Thanks for sharing ! But when you are running on track choose better shoes. Yeah Nike alphafly are "magic" shoes but they are very very high for 25 laps and easy you can receive injury in the ankle on the turns.
Interesting to say you felt like you were running on one leg at the end. Although it was obvious you were slowing & having some kind of issue your running form was still perfect just at a slower cadence.
Shit happens, appreciate your honesty. Must be tough as looked in great shape. Get fit and rested and best of luck when go again Kristian. What do your guys do for a warmup ?
Hello, Kristian! I am from Latvia, I watched with interest your video 10,000 m challenge. The goal you set was very high. For example, the Latvian record in the 10,000 m run in the stadium is 28: 25.8 and has not been beaten since 1973. Could you please tell me what is your Vo2 max? Thank you and good luck in your career!
Yea a shitty result is what builds a great athlete it teaches you to deal with the shock if a race is hoing badly. Also it is very hard mentally to run track if you not used to it,I took a while to get used to it mentally when you think oh gosh ive still got 12 laps or whatever.
It looks like it was pretty windy, and Moen did a worse time than the one you were looking for. So, maybe the wind was too much, considering you had to run 25 times with headwind.
Too much caffeine, too little precice hydration? or just too hard training and stress? Thank you for posting these videos too, im sure not one athlete can have just perfect days the whole season, never to say the whole career (Y) own failures at some workotus feel now more human rather than too humbling :)
Perfect race situation for a good time. Maybe you need to fine tune your training slightly to get your body a bit more relaxed at 28min 10k pace....I'm sure you'll crack it!
Think the training load building into the race race perfect. Think I just need more K’s at hard tarmac at higher pace to put some pressure on my quads before next race
@@kristian.blummenfelt Yes, I agree. You need to get your body accustomed to running at those places. Maybe to take some pressure off you might want to do a couple of low key races to ease yourself into track racing. Then look for something/s more competitive with an objective in mind....
