The vocal harmonies are honestly my favourite part about By The Way, both the song and the rest of album, I’m really happy there’s now a video breaking it down!
I think his backing vocals on Slow Cheetah are an often overlooked gem. On the chorus especially, listening to his vocals isolated gives the song a totally different and interesting vibe.
Oh my god thank you so much for this. I've been looking for a transcript or isolated track of John's vocals on this song for ages. Genius! Good work man
Those last videos about vocal harmonies have been wonderful, Marc. I think you could also write down the chords to contextualize the harmonies a little better, that would help explain why more uncommon harmonies make sense, as the vocalists are not always singing the root note of the chords in their main vocal parts. Just a suggestion for the next ones!
I can see that quite a few other people have already commented on songs I was thinking about. But a killer video would be about how Crazytown made Butterfly using the Pretty Little Ditty sample
Can you do vids on Slow Cheetah - perfect harmonies. And Save the Population - I love the way they sing over each other, where John does a delayed overlay and perfect harmony in the last bit ❤
@@simplastic I'm aware of it, singing is always a struggle for me, I'm not very good at it! But the goal of the vid wasn't to sing perfectly, hopefully it still helped to illustrate the way the harmonies work despite the mistakes

Finally someone realizing the greatness of the chorus of by the way.
His layered vocals in this song are orgasmic
Great work! Hope there’s more coming, love john’s harmonies
Thanks a lot! I'm hoping to make some more as well :)
Extraordinary video! Great analysis and awesome, very pedagogical explanation. If you are a music teacher, your students must be happy :)
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Awesome breakdown, could you do She looks to me?
Thanks a lot! Will take a note of it, although tbh I don't yet if I'll keep going with vocal harmonies or experiment with other musical theory stuff
John also has brilliant backing vocals on unpopular songs: She Looks to Me, Dosed, and Slow Cheetah.

Best John backing vocals are on dosed
Very interesting!!! though remember that in the last chorus John sings in a very light tone it's probably all falsetto, you sang in chest voice
Thanks a lot! Ah well spotted
th-cam.com/video/rtdoANO-PUU/w-d-xo.html the clearest example of those back vocals and live

@@shanew6332 Awesome!! Good luck and enjoy ;)
That was a little painful to watch
Let me know why you thought so, would be interesting so that I can (hopefully) make the next ones better!
@@3minuteswithMarc your singing is out of tune. I am a little surprised you can't notice it since you are apparently a musician

he's not a great singer but he demonstrated what he was trying to and it worked well. I give him props
In the video he said he was going to *try* to sing the part in the song.
