INFO: John Frusciante was arguably the most important guitarist for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers as they grew famous. Flea, the band's bassist, mentions in many interviews how well he connected with the other members on an almost spiritual level. This statement makes it even more interesting to look up his story and his feats as a guitarist.

I copied a big part of the intro from a video called "How Flea Plays Bass"
by a channel called Polyphonic. Just like all the other footage and images
you'll see here, i don't own anything of it. It's merely used for educational
purposes. I don't see the difference between using footage created by a
TH-camr and footage created by a videographer in the 90s. Both deserves
credit. But since "How Flea Plays Bass" was a recently created video, it seems
like more people reacted negatively to this. My intention was just to honor the
artist in the video and share some knowledge.

Yeah he's easily top 100. There are too many great players for him to crack top 10. Odds are he's in the top ten of most favorite guitarist lists.

@@MaynardOwns Yea it depends what kind of top ten list it is, he is easily in the top of mine and many others favorites list like you said, but when it comes to technical ability Hendrix isnt even on the top 10, there is alot of amazing jazz musicians that will blow them both away when it comes to technical ability being able to rip thru every chord, scale, and technique there possibly is. On the other hand when it comes to heart and soul, creativity, and innovation then JF and Hendrix are easily in the top 5. Hendrix is without a doubt by far the most influential guitarist of all time, anyone who tries to dispute that my ears will just automatically shut off to them.

What I've always loved about Frusciante is the fact that he doesn't show-boat, like most guitarists do, and instead, he plays what is required for the moment (That's why Flea and John have such chemistry. Whenever Flea has the melody, Frusciante supports the music, and vice versa).

He didn't take a break from the band to recover from drug addiction, he couldn't handle the level of fame achieved after BSSM and quit the band struggling with depression and that led to his lowest point of addiction.

Bas Capel Note to self 📝 Read articles more thouroughly. But i did read an interview saying that Frusciante was inspired to do more drugs around that time by Flea. He used to be stoned on stage a lot apparently.
His drug use got worse after he left RHCP, he claims he wasn't doing heroin at the time he was touring.
The Chili Peppers were always a decent band, but they became superstars with Frusciante. To me, he is the Chili Peppers signature sound, and with him, they produced their best albums. The Italian stallion can flat out play that “gee-tar” like a God.
You have to give Halal credit too man. He probably would’ve became a legend too had he not died so young before RHCP got big. He was already amazing at guitar and was only gonna get better.

John Frusciante is like the Steve Jobs of the Red Hot Chili Peppers! Although not a founding member, he joined the band early on, and put them on the map. Then when he rejoined years later (with his newly found minimalist approach), he took the band to unbelievable heights, and the rest is history!

To be fair i hardly consider him a guitarist anymore. He's more of an all around artist. I think is solo work is severly underrated but that also makes it very special. John really means what he plays and writes.

@stephentherarabear Have to disagree with ya about the hendrix comment, john could play hendrix's full discography fluidly before joining rhcp, it's like, why they chose him to be in the band. and some his recordings with rhcp are TOTALLY on hendrix's level in terms of technicality/musicianship. see exhibit A: the end of the song Turn It Again. John uses far more restraint than hendrix, but always for the higher purpose of what he's trying to convey in the song; like, just because he's not shredding the whole time doesn't mean he couldn't if he wanted to.
I am biased though, Frusciante changed my life, and basically got me into understanding music as an art form that can rock your soul to the core of it's very being lol. I've been playing guitar for ~15 years now (fuck i'm old lol) and it's a huge part of who I am...might not totally be that way if it wasn't for John. I totally consider him to be Hendrix 2.0. Think about it this way, Hendrix passed away when he was 27, and John is turning 60 soon, so just the cumulative experience of playing guitar WAY longer than Hendrix was able to, puts him in another category imo.
John is probably my favorite guitarplayer of all time. I've grown addicted to listening to their concerts, where he improvises alot of the songs and make them even better.
His guitarplaying is just insane, and I love the sounds he turned the chili peppers over to.
John Fruciante is one of the finest guitar player ever....his contribution to guitar music is in similar level of Jimmy Page, Mark Knofler, Slash, Jimmy Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmore in context of contribution to a song.
His solo in Scar tissue is an achievement of humanity, as it is one of the finest musical expression of emotions in history...it is like the entire human consciousness has precipitated towards that moment of 28 seconds of perfection.
Damn you really love what he does with a passion. I love his music too, but not to that extent i think.

I grew up lisening to the guitarists such as Hendrix, Page , Clapton, Jeff Back and others....but when i heard BSSM i was fascinated by his minimalistic and percusive aproach. He can both stand back and shine in one song.

That stuff about his technicality is spot on. Reminds me of Richards and Wood, super strong players who never get credit for it because they prioritize quality over complexity, and often the simple stuff is the sweetest.
Frusciante is one of my heroes as a musician
One of the only guitarists that I can think of that actually deserves to make all of the different 'faces' full of emotion when playing. Another thing is he's not afraid to explore all directions and experiment. Simply put, most guitarists play the guitar to alter and bring out their emotions. John uses his emotion to bring out the guitar and alter it. He doesn't play guitar chords and notes. He plays raw emotion.
I love Frusciante. His solo albums are so emotional & his guitar playing is superb. I also wish Ataxia came out with more albums, I think that is also some of his best.
I've always loved his work in the "By The Way" album, it is just so tasteful; indeed it seems like every note counts, masterful, and so many different and diverse sounds. Not that the rest of their albums together since BSSM are any less great (that heart-wrenching solo in "I Could Have Lied"...)
Come back for a couple more albums John! Josh stays as well, win-win!

But yes I’m still enjoying their music, even their new album of this year 😁 Almost 19 and still appreciating their music lol ❤️

actually.... kiedis is funky monks' riff "co-author". he played this riff by accident.
Paweł L Yeah, you're probably referencing the boat interview so I'll expand on that a bit. Anthony came to John with a riff that was very basic and was like "this is cool" and John didn't think so until he thought on it some more and decided the rhythm was nice to it, he changed up the melody and expanded on it to make it what it is now. I love the architecture that goes on behind songs like this.
i'm referencing to Kiedis' autobiography, but yes - that shows how Frusciante hears melody even in not the best in the world Kiedis' guitar skills :D He's great musician.
Anthony came up with the rhythm, but not the actual riff per se. He was massing it out on the low e string, without knowing how to play guitar. John laughed it off at the time, but what Anthony played stuck in his head rhythmically. He then played it in key, not just bashing random notes on guitar, and we got the awesome riff.

He also was a huge Hendrix fan growing up. He talks about how he was a kid and would amaze people by playing Hendrix songs. You can hear a lot of his inspiration in his music as well.

Frusciante is a FAR more proficient singer than AK. But he isn’t a frontman. There’s a huge difference there.

As for which artist/band would be cool to see next, I would love to see a video detailing the significance/impact of a cult classic such as Velvet Underground, Big Star, or The Replacements, and how these artist(s) hovered in relative obscurity while igniting a massively influential reputation. Keep up the awesome work man, it's been awesome to witness your channel grow in popularity and reception as it is much deserved.

As a musician a lot of these explanations kinda irk'ed me in their simplicity, but looking from an outsider POV I think this was a great explanation made for a wider audience than just musicians, good job on the vid man.
To be honest it's a lot of bedroom "musicians" that don't understand this stuff. So I can see why things have been simplified.
I see many people bashing John's playing because they can't comprehend that the guitar can be used for more than just shredding scales and sweeping arpeggios. Who knows, any that may come across this will finally get what makes him, and the band as a whole, so great.

I love Frusciante (Solos like Turn It Again, Hey, Don't Forget Me, If You Have To Ask, Central, Before The Beginning, I Could Have Lied) but sometimes i'm not fan of his improvisation in live songs (with exceptions like Don't Forget Me Slane Castle and a Couple Of Scar Tissue)
I couldn’t agree more. I’m 37yrs old, picked up a guitar 31yrs ago and haven’t sat it down. I think the video explained what John does best, and that is saying a lot with very little. Music is written for everyone, not just musicians. Take Ingwie for example, he’s technically so advanced and while I respect him, his music doesn’t touch my soul, as I’m sure most non musicians would have a similar sentiment. What John does is easy while at the same time very difficult. Personally I would rather hear that any day. Also take into account that when your back by such an amazing rhythm section as flea and Chad, you have the room to sit back and play sparsely. Soul to squeeze is a great example of flea’s bass being out more in the front with John painting in the details that bring it together nicely

I think what makes Frusciante great , as with all my favorite guitar players,is that although he may not be as "technically advanced" as some, I can "FEEL" what he's playing in just that one note. I consider that far more valuable than any other musical ability/talent. I think it's great that possibly he doesn't know every little "scale" that tends to be robotic,cold,stale and utterly useless...he creates moods and conveys feeling and emotion above technicalities. Loving this channel man, Frusciante is one of my all time favourites! Love the majority of his work w/ RHCP and solo (with the exception of maybe the last few solo records) and Curtains and The Empyrian are all time classics! Please keep the vids coming and Tame Impala would be awesome next!

He doesn’t usually emphasize technique so it’s actually an accurate statement. John himself said that
I took it to mean he doesn’t focus on styles like Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai, etc.
He isn’t known for technical playing, that doesn’t make him less of a guitarist though
Yeah... he can definitely play some incredibly technical parts when he wants to, but I would agree with the video that that's not the aspect of his playing that he's most known for. In my opinion his real genius is his ability to pare the guitar back to be very simple yet extremely powerful both melodically and rhythmically. He's got a fluidity to his playing where he seems to be unconsciously hyper aware (if that makes any sense) of what everyone else is doing and he steps up to the forefront and then steps back into the shadows so seamlessly within the context of everything else that's going on.

Jam sesh with flea and Omar Rodríguez López was special. Also the song Take the veil cerpin taxt and The song that's one long solo that he wrote for his friend who passed away are among my faves.
The best guitarist in existence- period. Listen to every song RHCP did during his time on their albums. Then pick one- maybe Scar Tissue- and find as many live versions as you can. It’s never the same song because he’ll change it; improvise... his solos reflect his emotion at the time. His guitar work live is MASTERFUL. The way that Flea and Chad Smith- also at the very very top of their respective instruments (maybe even the best)- have to play at a level 20 to Jan with him- is insane. I don’t give a fuck about the words in their songs or ANY AK singing. Fuck- just make them an instrumental band! His guitar speaks directly to a person.

Oh there's lots of 'best' things backed by science. When it comes to styles though, its all a matter of taste. Its not relative, its just what you prefer.

There sure is a lot of people that don't see his "genius" that's true. People seem to think that he just copied what Hendrix
did. And sure maybe he used his techniques and playing style, but that doesn't mean he didn't have the genius to use them exceptionally.
