John Frusciante is an incredible lead vocalist and songwriter on his own! When joined with his multi-talented Chili Peppers, his background vocals soar and glue genius musical ideas together in amazing ways!
Join me for an analysis of John's backing vocals on Pepper's Slow Cheetah. We get to use a "lead vocals out" version of the song so we can dig extra deep into the parts and nuances John contributes.
...And as usual, I'll show some interesting production ideas and singing tips that will help and inspire you in your own projects!

For those who may not know, his mom was/is a vocalist so he probably learned a lot from her. She and some of her friends did the backing vocals on “Under the Bridge”.

My favourite Frusciante backing vocals has always been the outro to save the population. I cant believe more people don't talk about his backing vocals. I cant think of another modern day band that use backing vocals as much as the chili peppers.

#JohnFrusciante is a genius on many musical levels but when it comes to background vocals and harmony whether studio or live...He is one of the few that gives me goosebumps while not overdoing it...I mean someone w/a bigger ego would strut in circles around Anthony but he knows the magic of less is more. An engineering perspective: You don't want to know it's there until it's gone and you are missing A HUGE THING.

John has a lot of power and energy in his falsetto. He manages to give it even more power by good articulation. And he is able to keep it strong and he won't over do. A fine line he is able to walk because of the fullness in colour of his voice.
    It's hard to describe.
And besides that a very colourfull personality.

Love it, do you think you could look at John's vocals on otherside?

It's fitting that you put the Scheps Omni Channel on all those tracks, since he's the one who mixed this record.

Andrew Scheps is the coolest person in the business. Highly recommend his podcast, Andrew Talks to Awesome People, where he talks to other engineers and producers.

hey Chris, could you please analyze Ben Kowalewicz's vocals (singer from Billy Talent)? He has such a distinct voice.

Please do a vocal analysis about Dosed by Red Hot too, I would tell you that you gonna be surprised cause John's voice and Anthony's voice become a unique voice and since 2001 until today I DON'T KNOW who sing in the begining of chorus, I get confused everytime that i hear it..looks like angels voices, great backing vocals in the course of the music
