Shooting the Browning Hi-Power Practical

  • I got this Browning Hi-Power a few years ago and just love the way it shoots. This is a 9mm FN Belgium made Hi-Power Mark III in the Practical finish. The Practical was released in 1988 and I assume it was produced up until 2017, but I am not sure. When you hear of the Practical for Browning products it is a steel lower with a matte silver hard chromed finish and a black epoxy finish upper. The Practical came in both 9mm and 40 S&W with the 9mm holding 13 rounds in the magazine and the 40 S&W having a 10 round capacity magazine. Another feature of the Practical is that they came with rubber wraparound Pachmayr grips and the magazine also had a rubber Pachmayr pad on the base plate. This pistol also has a single action trigger. Browning Hi-Powers were manufactured until 2017 and since then their price on the used market has continued to rise. It is hard to find a true Browning Hi-power in good condition selling at a bargain price. If you find one grab it.

    This is the first firearm I purchased back in 1995 the day after I arrived in the Atlanta area. To this day one it's still one of my favorites. It's such a sweet shooter and shoots well. Fortunately, one of my good friends and an accomplished shooter, trainer and gunsmith removed the ridiculous magazine disconnect safety.

      Cool, I wish I had bought mine new. I got it from a friend a few years ago. It still has that mag disconnect safety which is annoying.

      @@cervus-venator hey bud, didn’t forget about you. Finally took it out today. SA35 has much better trigger and holds 15 right from the factory. No hammer bite at all. It was accurate but not as accurate as the practical. Also had 1 stovepipe and 2 ftf out of 100 rounds. It’s a new gun and I was running cheap Winchester so I thing that’s pretty good. Overall the SA35 is a good carry alternative if you don’t want to lug the practical around but you still can’t beat an original browning in some aspects.

      @@calebstevens7487 Thanks Caleb, that sure helps me in making a decision to continue looking for either an original Hi-Power for a shooter or saving that money and putting it towards the SA35. I'm not committed to either so it doesn't hurt my feeling either way. Besides that, who wouldn't want a new gun built on the classic design.

    Mine is in 40 S&W because the Clinton magazine capacity ban was in effect so I got the 40 because it has a 10-round capacity I gave the Pachmayr grips to my brother and put traditional Browning wood grips on the practical I will put lock grips on it one of these days

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've considered taking the Pachmayr grips off as it certainly makes the grip thick. I've left them to keep the gun original, but wouldn't mind a slimmer grip.

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dlife7427 Isn't that crazy? I like the old FEGs, but a lot of them are just selling at too high of a price (in my opinion) to warrant the purchase. Now I can't control the market, but I can certainly not participate in it. Just like the Makarov that was mass produced for the military, police as well as for the export markets; people could buy these sometimes for less than $100, but their market price today is unreal in my opinion. People are buying them however and as long they do then the market price will remain high. It is the same with all older collectable guns. What was once considered a run of the mill average gun that could be bought as surplus for a few dollars are now sought after and bringing top dollar to those that have them for sale. I guarantee you that you can buy the P35 for $450 and it will only go up in value.

    Are the .40s considered not as desirable?

    • @cervus-venator
      @cervus-venator  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I would not think so. I see them selling on gun auction sites and they seem to go for about the same amount as a 9mm. It appears that people wanting a Hi-Power Practical will pay the price whether in 9mm or .40 S&W. I'd get one if I could find one at a low price, but that is likely not going to happen. With the move away from .40 due to the advent of higher pressure 9mm making it a strong self defense calibure appears to be the only reason that the .40 cal in the Hi-Power Practical would be less desirable. Not so much the gun itself, but the calibure. .40 S&W cal is a little more snappy than a 9mm, but overall I like the .40 S&W. In hard times of finding ammo there is usually always some .40 available.
