- On March 20, 2010 - 5 days before her 100th birthday - Magda Olivero talked for an astonishing two hours about her career at Mantova's Teatro Bibiena.
In this clip she talks about Maria Callas and about playing Minnie in La Fanciulla del West.

I always adore hearing her speak - what a musical speaking voice. She is full of light. Please bear with the opening aria as it is from a very old, but cherished 1930s recording . The sound quality of that recording is not flattering at times - she is not singing under water Bigman240 i promise you.

Can anyone explain the anecdote envolving Callas? In what way Ms. Olivero would save Callas (whose voice was gone)? Did Ms. Olivero play her alternate as Turandot?
Mrs. Oliviero said that DI Stefano, before his death, told to her: " Magda, I want to tell you something that I always forgot to tell you, but I want to tell you because it is too important since it comes from "that woman" and you know who is "that woman" (quella donna). Callas was sit on a sofa crying. She tried to make some sounds but with no success. She trudged (arrancava), she tried and in a desperate moment she sad "there would be only one person in the world that could save me" and I asked to Callas "and who would be" and she replied: Magda Olivero". Here the translation. I think that is a pity that such a great soprano as Olivero is, reminded to the public that miserable moment in Callas' life. It is not the first time that I heard something like that (even the great Tebaldi did something similar recently). Both are gorgeous but the style of Callas was definitely better.
