A sincere Thankyou for posting these amazing videos of the most wonderful Italian singers .Magda Olivero was absolutely magnificent and Sen. Villa's tenor voice had the sweetness and lightness needed for this aria/duet.Bravo.
A Claudio Villa mancava solo la tecnica di emissione corretta per essere un ottimo, forse un grande tenore lirico-leggero. Infatti non portava la voce in risonanza di maschera. Della Olivero che dire....sempre la grande, straordinaria artista e cantante. Bisogna anche mettere in evidenza lo stile, il garbo, la classe di tutti i protagonisti della trasmissione, non ultimo il presentatore Mario Riva.

This is "Il Musichiere", one of the most famous Italian TV shows, hosted by Mario Riva and broadcast on "Programma Nazionale" (now Rai1), the only RAI channel, from 1957 to 1960; since the Lady was born on March 25, 1910, at the time she had not yet turned fifty; for the rest, I agree with you and the duet is delicious!

What is most remarkable about this duet is that the soprano Magda Olivero had a very powerful voice but she held her power in check to match the rather delicate tenor voice of Mr. Villa.
Ein Dokument der damaligen Zeit, wenn ich als Hörer oder Zuseher das heute herunterputzen soll, verweigere ich mich dieser Einstellung, Lebensfreude spenden, verbreiten, sollte nie in Frage gestellt werden. Ich bin froh über dieses Bild- und Tondokument.
Given that Olivero is an opera singer and Villa isn’t, I suppose he doesn’t make a bad stab at this duet - even though he seems not even to be acknowledging the singer he’s supposed to be making love to! Olivero is in a class of her own: a measure of her consummate musicianship is the considerate way she scales down her voice so as not to overwhelm Villa’s very small sound, and also the way she guides him when his pitch wavers!
I can't even imagine an operatic tenor who could equal Villa in this piece. It is an absolute vocal masterclass. Naturally she had to guide him, since she knows the piece by memory & has sung it many times, - while he has never sung it, & is sight reading.
@amantedellopera1681 Villa wasn't an opera singer. Tagliavini possessed a truly beautiful voice, & may have sung this piece equally well. Schipa was also interpretatively marvelous, but lacked Villa's honeyed timbre, at least in this piece. I know very little about Villa's vocal range musically or dynamically. It was a very small voice it seems. But everyone has the potential to make a definitive interpretation of a particular piece. For me, Villa has this one.

Magda radiated charisma just by walking from the audience to the stage. No wonder she was loved as much for her stage presence as for her singing.

It's hard to believe Magda was 62 years old and sounding as youthful as she looked. Claudio had a small but lovely, stylish voice.
