The best way I save is I pay living expenses. Then let's say I'm left with 3000 for the rest of the month. So thats R100 a day I can spend. So everyday my goal is to not spend or spend the least of that 100 I can. My thinking then becomes if I make lunch pack and avoid situations that take money then I will have 'earned' 100 for the day. In that way, it becomes a job where my work is to avoid being frivolous. So every 2 days I bankninto savings what I saved, sometime it's clean 200 or 100 or 150 ect.

the day i had to get an emergency operation and 3 hospital stay days that cost my medical aid company 30k was a happy day, i gladly gave netcare my id and medical aid card. i have trash savings and my medication isnt chronic but i need it monthly so it eats into my savings. so them paying 30k was the only time i felt like i had really claimed

People unfortunately, have data for You Tube and social media! it might be an excuse that access is not there for the 'layest' person. I just joined here and I think this is a great podcast. Very informative.

I agree with Thami, my view on emergency savings however is 3 to 6 months savings of essential expenses like basic needs, and minimum debt payment - not necessarily your net income, IMO you're not expected to be worrying about anything else in times of crisis.
I appreciate this episode so much. The personal finance conversation is long overdue for a lot of South Africans. We need to continue the conversation with a perhaps a series of topics such (1) a focus on debt and how it can cripple our ability to invest and how to get out of debt fast (2) types of insurance and what is essential to have i.e. income protection insurance.

This chat is not for the faint hearted. It forces you to self-introspect your relationship with money. When he said, "There's a price to be paid." I felt that. He dropped so many gems - so insightful. Thank you Ursula and team. ❤‍🔥❤‍🔥

This was an eye opening conversation. great minds! But I’d like to differ on the night economy part, generally South Africa is not a safe country so that could be an obstacle to us having a night economy, without being political but I don’t think apartheid curfew culture was a fair example. We could achieve a night economy only if the crime could be dealt with.

      This is true however:
      1. They had a very rare opportunity set
      2. You can't replicate what they have done easily
      3. Exceptions don't negate the rule
Part of out struggle is that we want to use the outliers as an example. The danger is we begin to think that their path is replicable with ease and more often than not it's not.

If you don't use your imagination regularly, and choose to outsource it, then how will you raise descendants who will imagine something bigger and better? Illiteracy breeds financial illiteracy. Building wealth needs someone who has more than average comprehension, as you choose your portfolio assets based on understanding how you might make or lose money. You have to invest in understanding the asset you choose to invest in. Start by investing in reading for leisure and reading to learn is not reading for leisure. Reading habituates your mind to think in wider terms and to imagine things that are not there. Fiction exerts on its reader a bigger demand for the use of imagination than nonfiction. If you establish a reading culture in your home, your children and grandchildren will do it with ease and enjoy it as it was intended.

      Not really
Elon moved to another country without access to his father's wealth and relationships. He started from the ground as an immigrant.
Bezos had a completely different experience as was able to built off the base of his family which Elon couldn't do.
