Does anyone recall needing to open the Spam can with the special "key" that came attached to the top of the can? After the slit in the "key" had the starting piece of the metal strip that wrapperd all around the can threaded through, you would start evenly, nicely turning the strip. It wrapped in one big metal curlicue thing around the "key" all around the can, back to where it began so the lid could lift off the top. Circa de 1964-ish when I was about 10 yrs old, my grandmother, spam-feeder, would let me very, very, very CAREFULLY (because it was a thin SHARP metal edge I was dealing with - hugh potential for getting some nasty finger decapitations if not very, very, very careful!) unwind the metal seal thingy off of the "key", throw it away, and keep the "key" - MY VERY OWN "key" to MY house, my car, my garage or whatever I fantasized it for at the moment! I did it every time I could and would have hundreds had I saved them all. I saved none but I sure have hundreds of special memories of the tons of fun I had from getting to do that! Now opening the can is easier and more efficient but lacks so much adventure!
I'm in my sixties, and I remember that key well. I haven't bought a can of Spam for many years, but I guess now it won't be as much fun to open. The threat of an arterial spurt made life so much more interesting.
Indeed, I remember the days of the 'key'! Sometimes the strip would *break* just after starting and my dad would find some pliers in our kitchen junk drawer (doesn't everyone have a junk drawer?) and he would work the end free and reattach the key and try again.
I remember cutting myself many, many times. It was as sharp as a razor. As children we weren't allowed to open the cans ourselves. We used it in peas and carrot salad, which was a recipe we got off the can in the 60's. It was called "Spam ham salad."! We loved saying it's name! Does anyone else remember that recipe??
As a retired professional chef, the most important comment I have to contribute is this: You are cooking. You are cooking what you like in a more healthful way which is how you like it. Too many people these days want nothing to do with the kitchen.
My mouth is watering. We ate spam 60 years ago in the Army and I said I’d never eat it again but I started to miss it a few years later and I’m going into town for supplies this Saturday so I’ll have this on Sunday after Church. I can’t wait thank you for the lessons.
my dad was a bit like that, 40 years after his war (WW1) mum had to keep a tin of bully beef and baked beans in the house as he just had to have it occasionally with a hard biscuit. I wasn't in long enough....
daleboe8912--My Dad told me the same thing! But he said he started eating it again 6 months later. My mom used to fry it & make sandwiches with mustard on them. Yummy! I eat the low-sodium now, cause of my high blood pressure. Only eat it every once & a while, though. May just some the next time at the store. Sounds soon good now!😂 Will try your little tip on getting rid of sodium frm spam. Thanks
Darn spell check!! Meant to say. Just get some at store. And soon good. I hate spell check as it is always substuting the wrong words in my sentences!!
Just slice it and fry it in a little oil, that's how I did it if I ate it with eggs for breakfast when I was a very young adult, my parents never boiled it either and to be honest it never crossed my mind and to take all of the salt out I don't think I'd want it that bland.
I would use a larger pot with more water. I boil hot dogs and sliced Bologna too. I put three little slices around the sliced Bologna so it doesn’t turn into a Bologna bowl.
This video is 2 yrs old as I watch it and I am SO mad at myself that I haven't discovered this man sooner! His control of the video.. A+! His humor, angles, instructions, patience, everything...all of it contributes to this "down home" feel of actually being in the kitchen with him. Well done, sir. I am so glad I found your vids.
It was so funny as he's trying to not "make a mess, cuz he'll be sleeping on the couch" He really didn't make a mess but I think he'd kinda be ok if he did :P
Great video. My husband and I love spam, but the salt was getting to be to strong for us. Farmers at one time and we love❤ butter. Thanks for the video. Guess what I'm making tomorrow?
This is brilliant. I have avoided SPAM my entire adult life as being fed it too much as a child. I am dying to try this with some eggs. I grew up in Hawaii and SPAM is a staple. Thank you for this video.

Slice and boil Spam for 5 minutes or until slices float. Let stand in hot water 5 more minutes. Remove slices to strainer, rinse well. Set slices on paper towels to dry. Stack slices for slicing. Cut into squares Sauce: prepared teriyaki sauce, Brown sugar, mix well Melt butter in pan Fry desalted spam in butter until caramelized on both sides. Add sauce, labor of love Let spam caramelize to bring out flavor. Do not over crowd pan. Poor pan drippings over spam. To clean pan, add water while hot to loosen caramelized sugar before going to sink. This looks great. Nice job.
I literally just made this with the Hickory Smoked flavored Spam for my mother. I boiled it for about 15 minutes. I then pan fried it in butter, maple syrup, and a little nutmeg. Thank you for the de-salting tip.
Great job. You should try it with Light Brown Sugar, Yellow mustard and onions. Carmalize the onion and spam with the ingredients. It's wonderful. Substitute ham if you want.
@@Group_Anonymous That's what I wondered....is it even more unhealthy than regular Spam? I'm not knocking Spam...I eat a decent amount of processed food. I was just curious. Jesus bless.
I just tried this Special Spam Recipe. It was literally delicious. Even my wife who doesn't usually care for "processed foods" thought it was delicious as well. This is a keeper recipe!! Thanks for posting it.
Just a thought, put the cut Spam in the strainer and put that into the boiling water. Then pull it out and run under the cold water. Save a few steps and some burned fingers.
Spam has a lower sodium version Spam but sometimes it is hard to find in the stores. The method shown in this video looks fairly easy to remove excess sodium.
That's the best way I have seen Spam cooked. I'm 71yrs, we had Spam so many times for breakfast, dinner, and even Spam sandwiches when fishing all nite. Thanks for showing how to get the salt out. I give you a big 👍

I have got to try this. Just learning how to de-salt the spam is worth it. If it can take the place of bacon as expensive as it is now makes it worth it too. I am a bacon lover. You keep doing what you are doing. You are all right with me.
I'm watching this video on an empty and starved stomach; driving to to our local grocery store to buy all ingredients needed to cook this recipe right away! Thank you for sharing!
My dad and I used to eat SPAM all the time when I was a kid. He lived through the depression and ate it often when he was in the Korean War. He still ate it on occasion, until he passed last year. He would have loved the sauce that you made.
Spam...the original MRE. As a single dad, I taught my son at 5 years old it would save his life one day...like his great grandfather in WW2 who survived on an island with it for 3 months after he was shot down. Lasts 30 years or more in the can. But now...fry it, put it on toast with a lilttle pepper and butter and mayo and some fresh onion.....great stuff. With this economy, we're gonna have to go thru it again.
I introduced my daughter to spam this past year. She loves it. I usually just fry the slices in a skillet, with no oil, until the outside is crispy brown. Two slices make a perfect sandwich.
Back in the 90s MREs contained Ham Slice. Another MRE pack was a mini loaf of bread. Those two and mustard made a great sandwich when you had been working all day in the heat.
I love how youtubers generally make comments about how they get negative comments. Heck He's doing it the way he wants and the nattering nabobs of negativity can go fly a kite and do it the way they want, who cares or even worries about what the naysayers are doing. Good little video I'm going to try it and see for myself, THANKS for the instruction.
@tr7938 did you watch the video? The guy says that he will probably get negative comments about using too much butter… this Op is not saying that were negative comments left. You seem like the only loser trolling spam cooking video. Damn maybe you do need to fly a kite you need a life. Oh the hypocrisy 🥳
No matter what anyone else says, YOU’RE the cook !!! You can do what you darn well please! It is SO GOOD to see a method of getting rid of that enormous amount of salt the it is processed with. Looks GOOD 👍🏻
Definitely no complaints from me. I am a Spam junkie. Growing up, we ate lots of it, and I still love it to this day. I had a great vacation in Hawaii, since it appears to be a staple there.
I've avoided spam for years because it was disgustingly salty to me. Just tried this method, and I'll confirm that it makes a huge difference. I'm a spam fan now.
I prefer an overnight soak, and then marinade with soy sauce and brown sugar. I also fry in peanut oil. "Why so weak? So weak big man like you scare peanut" -- Uncle Roger. Makes the best musubis.
I can't believe I watched a half hour long Spam cooking video from beginning to end and I really liked it and enjoyed myself. I like to try this myself but I am thinking about using honey instead of the sugar. Thank you 🙂!
Very good, my mouth watered all the way, my wife never watched, so I'll surprise her with a batch when she's not looking. I'm 78 years young and you made it fun enough for me to try it. God Bless you and thank you.
Since you hate getting burned, I have an idea. Bring a tea-kettle full of water to a boil. Slice the Spam and lay it in a saucepan. Gently pour the boiling water over the Spam. No splashing, no burns. Thanks for showing me how to remove the salt from Spam.
Yes I remember using the key. My dad ate so much spam in world War 2 that he really didn't like eating it. I guess they fed the military spam because it kept so long. My son likes it. Thanks for the recipe gonna try it.
Never apologize for sharing something you like. This is YOUR take on a food source and although I won't be eating it, it was interesting and now I understand how to prepare it. Please stop apologizing. You made good content. Heck, I bet a million people will see this eventually. Rock on and keep delivering quality content! (and stop apologizing) 😂
Just an observation. We do most of our grocery shopping at Wakmart. A can of spam sells for $3.38 . A few months ago they were completely out of Spam so I purchased a can of Great Value luncheon meat for $2,28 . To my surprise , I could not tell any difference between the 2 products except that the Walmart brand seems slightly less salty . They look identical in side by side comparison . Since then I have been buying Great Value Lite Luncheon meat which is a blend of pork and chicken with less sodium . It taste and looks exactly like Spam as well. The Spam and the GV luncheon meat list the exact same ingredients. It's a no brainer at $1.10 less per can. One more thing , Dollar General sells Clover Valley Luncheon meat that is exactly the same as well for cheap. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised if you try these.
Personally I like Treet Meat better than SPAM or the GVLL. I am however the kind of person that would shoot myself before removing the salt. In my particular area Treet Meat is the cheapest of the cheap. I love it though, particularly with Glory brand canned collard greens. Shit ton of salt though, maybe even enough to outright kill a person with COPD.
There is also Turkey Spam which has less sodium than the lower sodium Spam. It has a turkey flavor that is different from the regular, but tasty in its own way.
That's exactly the way that I get the salt out of spam too. I live in Hawaii and we locals love our teriyaki spam musubi. If you don't do this process before adding in the teriyaki sauce, you get salt overload. Of course we have regular spam musubi. In which case you don't really need to take the salt out. The rice balances out the saltiness. Try taking the spam after the boiling process and make a egg and spam sandwich. Just an over easy egg and a slice of spam with a dab of mayo on buttered toast. It's one of my favorite comfort foods. Aloha from Hawaii
@@nmfd72 so don't be a potato and sweat it out. Damn, its not like you eat it every meal. Oh my god, the SODIUM!!! Ive been able to work a full day after a blackout drunk since I was 18. Great Video! I’m 70 & haven’t had spam since I was a kid. Now that I have to watch my BP levels, getting rid of the salt will definitely help. Thanks sooo much!!❤️
salt is not your enemy, unless you are one of those rare people who are salt sensitive. Salt is essential and not eating enough can be detrimental to your health!
@@cherrydowns7745 I'm one of those . Can add ten lbs overnite . Have known since a teenager . Cause and effect . Don't do soda or salty snacks and can taste it in a lot of pizza . I use iodized salt to cook with so I don't get goiter .
@@cherrydowns7745 Completely agree. There is absolutely no scientific evidence that sodium raises BP, recent meta studies confirm that fact. Very few people are salt sensitive and those people need to avoid salt where possible.
Thank you for this! I grew up on Spam but I never knew you could remove the salt which is great for people with high blood pressure. Love the Teriyaki sauce ❤️
Sir, you did a fantastic job recording the step by step process!! I said “oh no” when I first saw the length of the video, but to my surprise I actually enjoyed sticking with you the entire time 😂 You’re quite enjoyable to listen to & watch and I felt as if I was in your kitchen cooking with you. You’ve gained a new subscriber!! 😊
This is my first time seeing this site and I like so much of normal regular people cooking on there electric stove. I really like this cook, I love spam and now thanks to your wisdom I can reduce the salt thank you. I always have fried mine in a skillet , now I know I can put sauce on my slices never thought of that, Thank you. And I also remember the key to open the spam can. I was just telling my mom about the key a few weeks ago.
The idea of removing the excess salt is a good idea and I had no idea that spam could be cooked this way. My mother ground it up and added relish and mayonnaise for sandwiches and it was actually pretty good. Thanks.
Ever wonder why there is so much salt? They're trying to keep it from rotting before you open the can, because it is rotten and tastes like dead three day old cat.
Me, & my high blood pressure can not thank you enough for this valuable information. I've been stocking up on Spam for emergencies. Sharing everywhere. ❤️
Just a friendly hello... Salt won't actually mess up your blood pressure (despite what the doc says). That myth is still going around. My doc told me this too, but it's bull. Salt is an essential nutrient and good for ya. If you eat too much, your body will get rid of it without concern (but usually your own taste buds will stop you from eating too much)... and it's nearly impossible to "eat too much". There is actually no legit science that proves salt does anything to your heart but this has been parroted so long that people (including many doctors) still believe and keep repeating it. Sugar, on the other hand, is really the culprit; it's WAY more detrimental to heart health. Recommend checking out the book The Salt Fix. I stopped limiting salt a couple of years ago and enjoy it in my food now. My blood pressure is now totally normal too! No heart issues. We've been lied to about this wonderful little mineral made by God.
If you do have high blood pressure then you do realise that he hasn't taken the salt out of Spam he has actually added more salt and a lot more of sugar to mask the salt in Spam? Teriyaki sauce is basically soy sauce mixed with sugar and Sake and that's not mentioning the other crap they put into pre-made store bought Teriyaki sauce. Don't follow this recipe if you care about your health?
Thanks for the video. I am 72 and have never eaten SPAM. Just bought my first can last week. (Bucket list lol) So your video is timely AND obviously “a love of labor”!
Oh, you definitely need to fry it then. It is the tastiest way to eat it. Sliced thin though (thinner than him, is how I prefer it.) Not a fan of the texture of it out of the can, so if sliced thin and fried, it changes the texture enough that it is quite nice actually. If it's too thick, it retains some of that texture. Frying SPAM, is like the difference between plain balony and fried, if you've ever tried that? It's like a night and day difference, right?! Same here, it's very different and better when fried.
@@thomasayer7511 Well yeah, but in a shtf situation or disaster, where are you going to get bacon? Lol. And, we've already seen supply issues and shortages of many things in the last couple of years and it's getting worse. We're pretty lucky Pork has been one of the most readily available meats throughout the pandemic and this. Beef had shortages and was and is getting more expensive constantly and even chicken where I lived was in short supply, temporarily and saw massive price increases. Yet I still find pork sales/specials regularly and in more supply than beef or chicken and not once has it been in short supply near me (and we have no pig farms right locally, so....). Matter of fact, sometimes we were swimming in Pork really and I'm still getting deals on it. If you can call them deals, these days, lol. Bacon prices sure shot up, but other forms of pork are still very reasonable like chops, peameal bacon, lions, hams etc. And now and then I still get bacon specials. But I also ain't fussy about buying fattier cheaper bacon either, fat is flavour and good for you. Even the higher end stuff goes on sale pretty regularly too though. But sale price now, is last year's regular price.
Not sure why I kept watching since I wasn't looking for this, but loved the raw delivery and presentation, like a good friend who pays to listen to. Will continue to watch your tips and tricks in around the kitchen.
I absolutely love this guy and this video. Not only have you taken something I've eaten for years and shown me a more delicious way to eat it and I can't wait to cook this, I gave you the fastest thumbs up because of your margarine comment. 😂 I love butter too!!!! Thank you
Nice video. I opened a can of SPAM last week (6.1.23), that had a 2014 'use before' date...9 years too old. It was nice and pink and tasted fine due to plenty of salt. I use a cold water method of soaking and most salt is gone in a couple of hours after several rinses. Goes great with scrambled eggs. So, SPAM lasts many years after the suggested use date, probably 20 years.
We don't care for Spam but I ordered 10 cans from Amazon last month because it does last so long in case of the emergency that we have been warned about.
If something is vacuum sealed why should its self-life ever expire? We all know the answer to that, to purchase more. Ha The only expiration date I really pay attention to is the date on the milk. !!
Wow, I never heard of this!😮😮😮 Spam was a meat we had a lot in my childhood! I stopped eating as an adult because of how salty it was. But now I can start back to eating it now, after this video!😊😊

If in a survival situation, might not have a lot of water to de-salt it. Perhaps even running under tap water would at least take some of the salt out. BTW spam is on menus at most restaurants in Hawaii since WW2 when it was imported for military and civilizations liked it too.

I like you. You seem like an honest guy. My grandpa used to do this! He would ask every breakfast place he'd take me to if they had spam, didn't matter how nice the place was.. Half the time they looked at him like he was crazy, and he'd always manage to convince them that they have spam somewhere in the back. And sure enough, they ALWAYS had a can of spam laying around. He was in the navy, so they apparently ate a lot of spam. He was desperate to have my dad and my grandma and myself, to like it. But I hadn't liked spam very much until I found the low sodium spam.

@@cristinafisher2565 Weird how the Russian government now considers the USA and the UK enemies when we literally saved them from the Nazis! Lend-Lease agreements started with helping the Russians. We also gave them 15 million leather boots for their army, tanks, arms and ammo. The British never forgot our helping them and still eat beans on toast which became a thing after the USA started sending them food because the Nazis stopped all shipments of food to them.
My grandmother raised me and cooked spam exactly as you did in this video, except she added one more step: after the spam has been taken out of the pan, instead of pouring off the grease, she added 1/2 can of WELL DRAINED fruit cocktail to the grease. Stir it over hot burner until it starts to get crispy. Then pour over spam. GREAT!!!!! Gives the meat a fruity taste.
I think, for me at least, one of the epic videos on food that I have ever watched. Being a UK Airforce Brat, I do remember eating a LOT of Spam as I was between maybe 2 and 10ish, my Dad was Aircrew and finances improved over time, we started off living in a tiny caravan next to the base, and later moved to a wing of a grand house belonging to one Sir Esmond Ovey GCMG MVO (23 July 1879 - 30 May 1963) who was a British diplomat who was ambassador to the Soviet Union, Belgium and Argentina. God Knows how we got that housing option, but Dad was paid as a caretaker cash in hand when he was not flying...that house was the free run for me and my Brother when Sir Edmund was away. Spam became History to me then, and I have never looked at it since, until now. Thank you for this Video, I have tried this recipe, and several others....your de-salting transforms SPAM into a delight, and Yes, Better than Bacon
Same, I had spam growing up, and with how things are going have started to buy it now as an adult, and I remembered how salty it was then, and was looking for a way to get rid of the saltiness. Only to find this...better than bacon? That's a bold claim, I shall try your tery and brown sugar sauce, (I love both) and see how it turns out. 😉
One of my sons best meals when we were camping was fried spam mixed into boxed macaroni and cheese. They just loved it and it brings back such good memories of camping with them way back when! Such precious times!
I used to live in Japan for a few years and it always amazed me that all my Japanese friends and my girlfriend had no interest in a great steak, only SPAM. When I went to the market on base for groceries that was what they wanted for dinner. I got married there and even when we moved to the US, that's what my wife liked to cook. I love it and BJ's sells it in 6 packs!
Have you ever tried the different flavors. The SPAM factory and museum is in Austin, Mn. and one in Fremont, Neb. The one in Austin is about 45 mins. from me and I went with friends to take a tour. It’s really neat. I bought several different ones to try. I liked the black pepper one the best. Really good. If your ever up that way, you should stop and take the tour.
When I visited Japan I could not get over all the different “sandwiches” made with spam. I’ve been using spam ever since. I had forgotten how much I loved spam when I was younger.
Thanks for this video! Can't wait to try! I believe the reason the back is hotter is if your stove is not flat and has the raised back the heat deflects from that and stays in the area where the front is open and more vented allowing the heat to dissipate. Take care!
My sister and I had the same thoughts about dishes for the fridge.ive picked up Pyrex dishes at goodwill and thrift stores bcuz I have an old fashioned kitchen with a Hoosier hutch and an old Philco fridge that's still ticking. @@r7eagle_ 🌿 I agree that Oleo was found to be a poor choice due to the trans fats and it also didn't taste good in my opinion. But these plant-based butters are not only the most delicious of all...one is made from avocado oil and one from olive oil and one from coconut oil, I believe. If we're willing to try new things that we know aren't the healthiest, why not get a small tub of a flavor and try that? You won't believe something so healthy is so delicious, and I promise you, it won't go to waste. It's that good! P.S. I haven't yet tried the coconut flavor...and I DON'T own stock in the company!! 😜

yes I remember the key to open up the spam can. Years years ago. We used to cook spam in a cast iron can a lot back in the day especially in the morning with eggs. Thanks for teaching me how to remove the salt from spam. U learn something new every day. Spam does have a lot of salt in it. So this is good to know. Food for thought as they use to say. Using butter to fry it is better than oil. Oil is mostly not good for you in general. We don't fry much in our house because it's not good for u. Use butter when u can people. Good Job on the spam trip. ❤🎉😮😊
This is nice to see. I haven't thought of boiling out the salt. I of course, have not had Spam in years. I read the comments on the can key for opening. I didn't know it changed. Which isn't surprising though. Everything changes
This is useful, thanks. I remember when serving in Vietnam on a river boat, our crew used chunks of C-4 plastic explosive to heat our Long Range Recon Rations. Now I got the Spam recipe to show my Sister in Law who is arriving tomorrow to visit for a month. She uses Spam. Of course, I don't have any C-4 to heat the water for her.
xray: I remember being a bit freaked out when I first saw a Riverine crewman lighting up C-4 to cook breakfast. Another memory of the weirdness during the Vietnam fiasco : -)
In the Army we used to put opened cans of veggies, baked beans or whatever right on the radiator to heat up bc the mess hall was too far away to walk & they forgot to get us transportation on weekends! ( Ft Ord was HUGE)
I love spam in Mac & cheese. I have always boiled my spam in the noodles. And I didn't use salt in the noodles as the directions suggested, the salt from the spam seasoned the noodles. And draining the noodles, the bulk of the salt goes down the sink. That and some steamed broccoli, carrots and calliflower makes a meal.
I would use a cast iron grill pan to get good grill marks. I would sauté green onions and pineapple chunks before the spam, for an additional flavor layer. Then finish it with orange zest. Thank you for your slicer tip and the salt remover tip.
I just tried this last night, and it works like a champ! I made my slices about the same as in the vid and used Soy Sauce and some Hoisin Sauce. Got to admit it was delicious. Besides one slice each for each dog of my three doggies, I ate the rest! 🤣
I've always liked spam so I I'm looking forward to trying your recipe and I'm going to order a slicer like the one you have. Anybody that objects to the use of butter probably shouldn't be eating spam either. I was surprised to find out that spam is hugely popular in Okinawa Japan and they live into their 90's on average. I enjoyed your video, thanks.
I think that you are a cool gentleman, hey I love coking myself . I cooked for an Italian restaurant for over 22years , but guess what even if I had not worked in one cooking is still a delightful way to toned down your day and cook up what ever you enjoy most. There are always critics ready to say something negative about your cooking, but nevertheless you still enjoy doing it. That’s what counts! And I love watching other people preparing there own dishes cause that’s how you learn new dishes! By observing what others prepare. Thanks again keep cooking my friend I really like your dishes!
John, I personally like your comments. I we were closer I would invite you out for a cup of coffee and perhaps a piece of homemade apple pie and just sit and talk. Thank you so much for your comments.
I love spam. They have a SPAM DAY in Hawaii every year and they have contests and almost everyone on the island is there. It's crazy. Thank you for your idea. I'm going to try it out. Keep up your great work.
I don’t eat Spam but, this guy’s video was so well done that I continued watching. I love a good cooking video, no matter the dish. You rock, mister! Good job and a really beautiful dish, I must say.
You could also make some red eyed gravy with those tid bits of fried Spam from the bottom of your skillet, to use on grits or anything else you want to have. Your less salt Spam with sweet teriyaki sauce looks so good! My son and I practically have Spam everyday in one way or another. It's so versatile. Spam fries, chopped in an egg scramble, in soups or stews, on a hamburger bun with BBQ sauce, or just ketchup and mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, like a hamburger (Spam burger). Fried up with potatoes and onions, in casseroles..in a poor man's meal, great grilled too and one our favs, chopped up and added to Jiffy corn bread mixed, baked in with the cornbread and then before eating we drizzle honey on top. So you get that sweet & salty taste going on. OH, SO GOOD!! Thanks for sharing! :-)
Being a Brit married to a Vietnamese lady I'd use three different items. I'd put the strainer in the water pan and drop the span into that, makes it so much easier to get out. The Mrs. has some 1ft cooking chopsticks with the ends filed down to flats, I use em all the time to flip items in the pan and remove em. The last one is I love HP sauce so I'd use that with the brown sugar. But your recipe served with bubble and squeak would be great. The spams coming out tomorrow, tomorrow.
I remember when I was younger and growing up my grandma would boil hotdogs instead of grilling or any other way of cooking. After watching your video, it now makes complete sense on why she did what she did. I'll be sure to start doing this method now that I know why she did it!
Thank you! I'm on a very low sodium diet. The NIH has come out with a new study and recommendation. They say that nobody should eat more the 1,500 milligrams of sodium (adding up the sodium in everything one eats in a day) but if you read further it says 1000 mgs a day is even better. You're saving lives. ❤Also, fat doesn't make people fat! Carbs do. Red meat and green leafy veggies is a perfect diet!
This is such an obvious thing but at the same time something most people (including myself) would never think of. Thank you for your contribution to general knowledge my good man.
Yes I most certainly do remember that key thingy as you say
I'm in my sixties, and I remember that key well. I haven't bought a can of Spam for many years, but I guess now it won't be as much fun to open. The threat of an arterial spurt made life so much more interesting.
Indeed, I remember the days of the 'key'! Sometimes the strip would *break* just after starting and my dad would find some pliers in our kitchen junk drawer (doesn't everyone have a junk drawer?) and he would work the end free and reattach the key and try again.
We used to buy oval cans of Herrings in tomato sauce (family of 7)in the early 50`s when we were richer than we are now.............cheeers.

I love Spam but stayed away from GV brand because I didn't think it'd be any good, but I'll give it a try now!

Are the listed ingredients the same?
That's exactly the way that I get the salt out of spam too. I live in Hawaii and we locals love our teriyaki
spam musubi.

Me, & my high blood pressure can not thank you enough for this valuable information. I've been stocking up on Spam for emergencies. Sharing everywhere. ❤️
You are soooo welcome
Spam is just fine, however, I prefer bacon.
I love it. Your cooking and your comment about if people don’t like your cooking then they can go to another channel. God Bless You Sir. 🙏 for you
Not sure why I kept watching since I wasn't looking for this, but loved the raw delivery and presentation, like a good friend who pays to listen to. Will continue to watch your tips and tricks in around the kitchen.
Right there with you. Heaven knows how this ended up in my TH-cam feed, but I was hooked. Now I'm craving Spam, of all things. ;-)
Hahaha. Same with me! I swear I was starting to smell it!

Ha
The only expiration date I really pay attention to is the date on the milk. !!
Just buy the low sodium version of spam. They have 25% less sodium. Problem solved.
I have a spare refrigerator ..All my canned goods are stored cold to extend date,
@@wheelie642 my garage frig is currently full of beer. Ha
Wow, I never heard of this!😮😮😮 Spam was a meat we had a lot in my childhood! I stopped eating as an adult because of how salty it was. But now I can start back to eating it now, after this video!😊😊
I'm watching this video on an empty and starved stomach; driving to to our local grocery store to buy all ingredients needed to cook this recipe right away!
Thank you for sharing!
If in a survival situation, might not have a lot of water to de-salt it. Perhaps even running under tap water would at least take some of the salt out.
BTW spam is on menus at most restaurants in Hawaii since WW2 when it was imported for military and civilizations liked it too.

Found out coming home that I bought so many ready made snack food from the Deli too without any worries to how much it was going to cost!
But I took it over to my youngest son's apartment, and we so enjoyed trying out your recipe!
I'm sure the aroma of the delicious flavor of the frying Spam permeated through the building!
I just leave the slices in a dish of water refrigerated overnight. Works beautifully.
Being good with ingredients like Spam are quintessential skills in my eyes. Such a basic yet staple product
Thanks for your reply
Two years later. Still entertaining. You make yourself so much EXTRA WORK. lol You are adorable. Fun.
How could anyone leave nasty remarks after watching your videos? I was giggling through the whole thing! A nice change from the videos that seem like they're scripted and, well, boring at times. Not ALL of them are bad. But your approach is so...approachable! A real guy cooking for us real people.
I love Spam, but it is really salty. I never knew there was a desalination (ha ha) method. I can only imagine how yummy your recipe is! I'm going to try it out the next time I go shopping for Spam. Thank you for your lovely and fun videos. I'll be sure to check in for more recipes on your blog!
I thought it was endearing watching how much HE enjoyed doing this! Unfortunately, it's the internet and people are total, pathetic jerks to anyone for no reason, they don't care. Sad world.
Love this guy's video!! I do a lot of cooking myself, and I get a kick out of your comments as you work your way through your cooking process. Can't wait to try your recipe, as I am a fan of Spam 👍
Because it's a evil world we live in. And so people's pleasure is pure misery.
I personally do not think you used very much butter.i only saw a dab. You didn't use a pan full
Because they have an opinion of the video that is...wait for it...DIFFERENT THAN YOU! Not everyone has to like what you like nor keep their mouth shut if they don't. I can guarantee though, if they don't you'll insult them way more than they insulted this guy in the video. Hypocrites, the lot of you 😂. It's okay when YOU do it, but not anyone else haha. No, I won't see your idiotic response.
When I eat Low Sodium Spam I also remove the salt. Thanks for your comment.
I don’t remember when I enjoyed a cooking video so much! Made me feel like I was sitting at his kitchen table watching him cook!
I am 70 years old and I just bought my first can of Spam at Walmart for $4.75. 😆 Found several recipes, this is one of the first I’m gonna try. TKS. ❤🎉
As a kid, fried spam sandwiches were a treat!!! Of course, we had it with homemade bread and my mom would dress them with fresh tomatoes and cukes from the garden and a little bit of mayo & mustard. I am going to make this lower-salt version and I can't wait to try it! Thank you.
I still like fried spam. Sandwiches and otherwise.

I didn't think it was possible, but you've made me crave Spam. Your cooking video style is perfect. Like you, every kitchen experience either results in a burn or some blood. In the UK when I was a kid I used to slice it then grill it till both slices are brown , put on toast with with some fried tomatoes .Absolute delish!!!!
Made this today. Beyond my expectations! Thanks for the how to video as it guided me through the whole process. Shared some with my neighbor. She said it was the best Spam she ever ate. Spam will be in my house from this day forward.
Ya so Ono . I eat spam all da time. An make scramble eggs an cooked rice
Ono too.
We helped the Russians survive during WW2 when the USA drop-shipped Spam so they wouldn"t starve. Spam became famous for that.
r u mental
@@cristinafisher2565 Weird how the Russian government now considers the USA and the UK enemies when we literally saved them from the Nazis! Lend-Lease agreements started with helping the Russians. We also gave them 15 million leather boots for their army, tanks, arms and ammo. The British never forgot our helping them and still eat beans on toast which became a thing after the USA started sending them food because the Nazis stopped all shipments of food to them.
Great idea of boiling the spam in water to remove the salt. Never dawned on me to try that. Thanks for the tip.😊
Holy Shit I gotta try this
Wow! fruit cocktail on the side? I'd love to try this one, too!😉😋
My Mom cooked Spam with pineapple green pepper and maple syrup at camp.

Pineapple orange juice when you have the best HoneyBaked Ham thank you
I haven’t had Spam since the 80s. Aster this video I’m going to make this.

Thank you for your comment
I initially watched this to learn how to desalinate the spam… that recipe with teriyaki sauce and brown sugar sounds awesome! Need to try it!
You can make it without brown sugar if you want. I happen to like it. There are no fast and firm rules.
Do it your way! You can NEVER use too much REAL butter!!! Good job!
One of my sons best meals when we were camping was fried spam mixed into boxed macaroni and cheese. They just loved it and it brings back such good memories of camping with them way back when! Such precious times!
Spam does bring back good memories!
SPAM is considered a welcome house warming or Christmas gift there.
Interesting story. Thanks
I like the black pepper flavored spam. TY for the video.
Take care!
PURE AWESOMENESS! Not so much the SPAM, Just the narration.
My sister and I had the same thoughts about dishes for the fridge.ive picked up Pyrex dishes at goodwill and thrift stores bcuz I have an old fashioned kitchen with a Hoosier hutch and an old Philco fridge that's still ticking. Love the spam. I like to quick fry then add pineapple rings a bit of mayo and some shredded cheddar on top with a salad or fried or scrambled eggs too. Yours looks good. I'm going to try it. Thanks.😊
As a canned food lover, this video is golden knowledge everyone should have
OMG, I have never ever heard of a canned food lover! You are the first...yippee
I definitely am going to try this - looks delicious.
By-the-way , studies have shown that REAL butter is better for you than Oleo.
🌿 I've been using plant-based "butter," and nothing I've ever had is so delicious! Country Crock is the brand I've found available here in Michigan. Great for people who are switching away from dairy foods wherever possible. 🌲💗🌲
Oleo sucks. There is no better way to describe it.
"Oleo" is quite toxic. Real butter is excellent.
@@diananutt1517 "Plant based" butter is NOT good for you at all.
I remember the key. Children were warned not to take the key until the can was opened. That's some good looking spam.

Comfort food - I like your idea of removing the excess salt and making it palatable and “healthier”. The French people would give you a thumbs up for using butter and so did I. Keep experimenting and sharing your helpful ideas.

Enjoyed learning and laughing this new (to me) Spam recipe. Haven't had any since the end of my tour of duty in '73 and haven't wanted any, until I watched your video. Now I'm looking forward to trying it. Thank you, sir..
This looks so good and I just bought some spam from Sam's club. The most amazing part of the video is you're preparing without snacking on it!
Isn't snacking allowed?
Amen, I would’ve been snacking on it for sure
lol
yes I remember the key to open up the spam can.
I loved spam and stopped eating it because it tasted too salty, many thanks for the tip.
How does C-4 heat water?
You light a small chunk it burns like a blowtourch!
Works much faster than the standard issue hexamine heat tabs
xray: I remember being a bit freaked out when I first saw a Riverine crewman lighting up C-4 to cook breakfast.
Good job! My dad used to make this for my brother and I years ago! He was a wwII vet and was very familiar with spam!
Great ideas, Thanks Wesley
Good idea
I like the way you think. My mouth is drooling and I am fixing that "Hawaiian pizza" sandwich before I get ready for bed(it's 9:30pm). Thanks!
You can play with your grill pan and make "grill marks" all day, and it still won't change the flavor. Complete waste of time!
Yummy

Great job especially teaching us to remove the salt
