Looks great! I grew up on Salmon Patties. I could eat them all day. Have you tried Salmon Wiggle? (Or called Salmon Pea Wiggle) I love that too. I ate seafood with my family every week until I was 7 when I was rushed to the hospital because I developed an allergy to seafood. So because of that my mom and grandma would make alternatives for me when they cooked seafood for the family. Of course it can't replace scallops or crab legs but salmon patties and salmon wiggle was always a favorite of mine.
I never take the bones out of salmon! They're so soft and I'm 79, eaten all my life and never harmed me yet. I feel like that add something good for me!
The bones are extremely soft, edible and amazingly healthy…AND kicks up the flavor as a result of the inclusion of those bones in the mix. I don’t even notice them at all. My mom never removed them either going waaaaay back to the 50’s. BUT, to each his or her own.
My grandma raised me and fixed these all the time. It was a cheap meal because all she had to buy was the Double Q, she had everything else. I learned how to make them by watching her and when I moved out on my own I made them all the time. I haven't had them in years and she is 98 she'll be 99 this July 20, 2023, so she doesn't cook anymore. I think I will make some and take them to her and my mama who takes care of her now. Thanks for taking me back down memory lane.
I just saw this video and saw your comment on the salmon patties. Did you get a chance to make some for your mom and grandma? I loved your comment on this!! And it's beautiful to hear how good things are carried on from generation to generation! I hope your grandma has a very blessed birthday next month!! I'm getting ready to make some salmon patties for supper! Have a blessed day!! 🥰
I am 52 years old. My mom made the best and I never watched her make them and she was killed when I was 21. I just watched this video today and cooked them for the first time ever. I nailed it 😁 thank you so much for sharing. New subscriber 🙋♀️
Welcome to the HDYC family! 😊 Oh no!!! I am so sorry about your loss so long ago. Not having your mother is so hard.. I'm glad you enjoyed the patties as much as I do.
Christi I just saw your comment and wanted to tell you I experienced the same thing, my mother was also killed just before my 21st birthday, it happened in late Novemeber and I turned 21 in January. At the time I swear I felt I was only one to experience such a great loss, I remember feeling like my heart was ripped from my chest. Thank god I survived, now I make them just like my mom did. God Bless
My momma just passed away last fall. I miss everything about her and she loved cooking me some of her salmon patties! I loved eating them too! Thank you for bringing back some very special memories!
My mom taught me to reserve the liquid. Instead of adding another egg and more filler, she'd just add some of the liquid from the can. She also coated the patties in a light layer of yellow cornmeal just before frying. It was a breakfast dish served with grits. Leftover patties (somehow there were always 2 leftover patties) were sliced in half, heated and became two sandwiches.
@@margaretshurland1614 The salmon I use doesn't list any preservatives. To my knowledge canned seafood is hermetically sealed and subjected to high heat which give it a 2-5 year shelf life.
The bones are super soft and will not hurt you. There’s lots of calcium in them. Once the patties are cooked no one will notice them. Leave them bones in there and eat them up yum!
I eat the whole content, bones for calcium, skin, flesh and juice for the omegas. Delicious and very heathy. Update 3/23/2022: My preference is stated above. This also applies to canned chub mackerel, herring, sardines and tuna of course. Since all of these are packed with sodium, I try to be careful with sodium intake. I also use fresh salmon and other non-canned fish such as catfish, swai, whiting, etc. I tried whole frozen sardines (about 8-9 inches long) but never again! These are WHOLE without any cleaning, scales, head, tail and NOT gutted. Plus, after all the cleaning I did, the bones, oh the bones, nightmare bones! It even has hair-size bones. I managed to get through this, and it has a moderate fish flavor, but never again! Favorite is steamed Kippers and egg-substitute, yummy!
I agree! The skin and bones actually add moisture and crunch. I take the bones out right away from the can and eat them up. High in calcium too. They r a soft crunch! Delish! They r meant to eat. Every bit of the salmon is great! I think some ppl think they r hard bones. They r pressure cooked before canned. So, they have a delightful crunch!
Yes I ate the whole can everything you're just throwing away most of the good nutrition and the bones are really really soft that's just plain dumb taking all that out
I like the bones put in onions, red & green bell peppers & ground corn flakes salt & peppers some hot red peppers & use olive oil to fry them in so good
My Mom and Dad would make this on Friday's for our family of 5, we loved them and still do but the bones stay in. I can't remember them ever taking them out. Now I fix them for my husband who never had them before and he loves them too. Always looking for inexpensive meals that taste good for my husband and I especially now that food prices are off the charts. TFS
I loved these as a young kid. My mama and grand mama made them and they were delicious. I liked to drizzle a little hot sauce on them. We usually had rice and some cooked veggies as sides.
I can't wait to try this recipe. We eat the bones because they're so tender and full of nutrients. We just mash them right in with the salmon, no problem. But as they say, to each his own. Thanks for posting!
I grew up. Mom smashing the Bones and using it. It never Hurt anyone. And I'm 63. I like to smash the round bones I just like the it feels. Weird I know. But I do. LOL! I USE EGG, OINION CHOPPED AND SALTINE CRACKERS. SAIT AND PEPPER . AND A LITTLE JUICE TO BIND IT TOGETHER. TO HOLD. SOMETIMES I LIKE IT A LITTLE RUNNING BUT STILL HOLDS. AND FRY IT IN A LITTLE OIL TO FRY EACH SIDE. ROLL FLATTEN. AND BIG ELBOW MACARONI AND TOMATOES TOGETHER . ON THE SIDE IS SO GOOD. I NEVER HEARD OF CORNMEAL BEFORE. I MUST TRY THAT. THANKS
I’m 78 and remember my mom always having this as a dinner. She used Red salmon and soda crackers with egg pepper etc to do the salmon and almost always had creamed peas and potatoes for the vege with a garden salad too. How fun to bring back warm memories. And of course I fed my family same as they grew up.
Can l get away from fish for a .moment, l love chipped beef on toast for breakfast. The Army used to call it " sh-t on a shingle .I love it with home fries !
Surfing for canned salmon patty recipes, stayed here for the nostalgia of seeing you mix your patty dough completely by hand. Memories of my Madea & my Mom prepping patties, eggs, and white rice in the morning for breakfast. Thanks for posting. Blessings and peace to you.
I've eaten fish patties my whole life. Mama used to make them with mackerel, I use salmon. However, both of these canned fish have been pressure cooked & you're missing alot of nutrients when you take out the bones! Just crush them up into the fish.
You gave me a warm memory! My Gram raised us 3 children and money was never plentiful so she bought mackerel a lot because it was a whole lot cheaper than tuna or salmon. Wed eat mackerel straight out of the can in the summer with crackers and produce from the garden. In winter she made mackerel croquettes. We loved them. There was 4 if us at the table. Shed get 12 croquettes out of a can of mackeral. Shed just add another egg and crackers and onion. Wed make 2 meals out of it. Wed have the single croquette in a sandwich for supper.
My grandma lived with us and she used to make these once a week. I loved them. I’d come in from playing outside all morning, grabbed a few of these and a glass of cold milk. One of my favorite memories!
My mother used to cook these when I was small back in the 1940s and 50s in East Texas. I was not crazy about them back then, but have found myself craving some of them now.
Growing up in the 60's & 70's my mom use to make these all the time. Somehow she used crushed saltines to coat the outside. I loved how these tasted when she cooked them
Know bones in canned Fish will hurt you because they are pressured cooked and all bones are well. You are are take out the good things that make it taste like Salmon the juice that's good to use to make the patties .l been making and eating it since l was able to eat. 78 years old.
I haven't thought about watching my southern mom cook these for dinner in at least 40 years - I could smell them and remember how much I liked them. Thank you for the fond memory.
Yes, certainly brings back the memories! Ate them as a child, and made them for my kids, now grand kids love them as well. I use eggs, onions, bell peppers, lemon juice, and Italian bread crumbs. Delicious way to get young children to eating fish !
I'm 73 and have eaten salmon all my life. I make them often for my granddaughter she loves them. Try adding a little bell pepper and a little yellow mustard to the mixture. I make them at least once a week. I live in a senior building and everyone loves them.
I've had a few cans of salmon from bout a year or two ago meaning to ask my mother how to do it, but she passed before I asked, I just stumbled on your presentation and man o' man am I happy I remember my mother & grandmother doing it just like you do!...... I didn't realize how easy it is thank you for making my day, oh and yes today is the day I will make them, lol..... 😆🍳🐟🌾....
Yes indeed...I been wanting some also ... My mom made them with homemade biscuits, buttered rice, and the good molasses in the can..good memories...!!!😋
That’s so nice. I have also forgotten to ask my mom about certain recipes before she passed away. This one was a favorite of mine and she used crackers or seasoned bread crumbs instead of cornmeal. Will definitely try cornmeal. I’m still looking for mom’s tomato gravy she served with biscuits.
My Dad use to make my Mom pick bones out. After he died I was making a salmon dish my Mom would make when I was growing up. I read the side of the can and realized that the can tells you the bones are edible and contain most of the good stuff you want to eat. They’re delicious!
I’ve bought canned salmon. But have never used it. Now, after watching your video. As a kid growing up we had filet sole, or haddock. And salmon croquettes. Your recipe sounds so delicious, it’s something I’m going to do this weekend.
I love salmon patties and this is pretty much the recipe my mom used. We removed the round bones but left the small ones. You can’t even tell they’re there. We used one egg, and if more liquid was needed, we used some of the broth from the salmon can. Delicious with fried potatoes, pinto beans, and cornbread.
@@donnawheeler6283 I do smash them up in the salmon with my fingers cause I don't want to eat the little rounds bones so easy to smash up besides I heard that the salmon bones where good in vitamin D we as female's need more of as we age for our bones
@@susandevitte2137 love it 😊 I used to read books about saints when I was a child, my mother being an adult convert was a very strict Catholic and had a saint for every occasion.
I use pink salmon too, eggs, minced onion & crushed crackers. When out of Salmon. I used Tunafish yes TUNA add 2 cans tuna with oil an all, 2 eggs, minced onions, crushed crackers & make patties & fry.. Yes same ingredients but I leave the oil in it. Mix everything until enough to make patties talk about delicious it's even better than Salmon patties. Y'all!! Try it yummy 😋 I'm from the South my kids loved the Tuna & not the Salmon lol!! 😊
Oh YUCK! I hate those bones! I’m good w eating these if someone else cleans them for me! BTW, my Mom also used crackers and flour! When she made these, she made milk gravy and fried Potato’s! Yummy, that’s one of the million things I miss about her.....😔R.I.P. Momma, I Love and miss you every day of my life!
Oh, I definitely understand about missing your mother. I lost mine back in 2007. If I could only have one more conversation, one more meal, one more hug with her. But you know, we can only go forward and live life to the very best of our ability. Just know she's watching over you and is always there no matter what. ❤
@@Dawnofabrightday , just crush those bones, it's easy as those bones have been canned and the canning turns them into easily crushed parts of the salmon and adds lots of calcium to the croquettes.
@@sharonwells9593 I wish I could Sharon! Mostly seafood makes me sick! I can eat salmon patties if someone else makes them. I know, it’s crazy! I wish I didn’t feel the way I do. I’ve tried all my life to eat seafood (Hubby LOVES all seafood) and just cannot! We’ve been to the best seafood places around and I’ve tried it there w the same result...🤷🏼♀️
Yes, I remove the bones...and then promptly eat them all!! YUM They are so thoroughly cooked in the canning process, it's like eating butter. Also very healthy too! My daughter loves them too. Btw ... I grew up eating Salmon patties EVERY Friday evening, grandma would serve it with buttered corn and stewed tomatoes and home-made bread and real butter. Thanks for the memories! 🐟
Leave the bones in and just mash them up; they're good for you; I always make the patties with bread crumbs instead of corn meal. Hint: buy a box of 100 disposable rubber gloves, wear them when working with hamburger, raw chicken, or canned salmon; also great when cutting up onions.
You can always use a zip lock bag for mushing and squishing your ingredients too. I use them for patting out hamburgers as well. Just throw the bag away.
Excellent cooking video- thanks! I basically use a similar recipe for mine, and I add about less than half cup of diced green pepper and press the patties down a little when I flip them over to ensure they're thoroughly cooked.
I use the same ingredients as you with the exclusion of salt because they're canned with salt and I use self rising meal and flour in them. I also add a bit of old bay and I keep the bones, juice and skin in. Yummy
My grandma's recipe almost same but she used whole green onion snips.served w her tartar sauce Helmans mayo and sweet relish mixed together. Served w fresh lemon slices. I will try olive oil.thanks.
I make salmon patties at least once a week. I grew up on them; however, my mom sometimes used Mackerel, but I only use Wild Alaskan Salmon or pink salmon. I serve them with rice or grits with eggs--yum yum. 😊 I absolutely love them, and yes, I crush up the bones and use them as well (so good for you).
No amount of calcium will ever make me want to eat salmon bones. This is my preference! You choose to eat yours the way you want to and I'll do the same with mine. OKAY!
I forgot to share that I use a ring from a canning jar large or small mouth to make sure the patties are the same size and cook the same. Love this video!
That's the only way I've know to eat them with grits and toast or biscuits. And when the family sit to eat; you wouldn't hear a sound. Sooooooo delicious.
I like to eat mine with pancakes 🥞 when that syrup gets on the croquette OMG so good 🔥 🔥

I grew up in Sweet Home Alabama, mama made salmon 🍣 patties & we ate them with biscuits & gravy! Bless her heart ❤️ Rest In Peace MAMA!! She also made potato 🥔 patties out of left over mashed potatoes!! Never will forget
This is a great recipe. My mom taught me this one as a child also. Every female in my family and some males too are excellent Cooks. We did not use meal in a recipe, just flour. Thank you for this wonderful memory ❤️❤️❤️
My husband likes salmon patties with tarter sauce. We had Mac n cheese and spinach. I raised my kids on them and they raised their children on them. They all still love them. 🥰❤️
Personally I think they taste better with seafood cocktail sauce. Tarter sauce is good with baked fish and Cocktail sauce is better with food fried in oil.
What a wonderful recipe thank you so very much… I’m 70 years old and I remember my mom making these for us all the time we had a family of seven and it was an inexpensive way to have a fish meal… But I never knew what she put in the mix to make it and she also made what she called a salmon loaf and I’m not sure what she did for that either so maybe you can come up with a salmon loaf recipe it’s probably just the same as the patties but she put it in a pan about the size that you mixed the patties in and so anyway thank you again what great memories and guess what I’m making for dinner tomorrow night!
#FRIED SALMON PATTIES,I put mine on a pan to let everything adhere to the ingredients & let sit for a little bit. Same if I breaded chicken or pork chops. I don't put them in the skillet right away. I keep the bones in but I squash them. They are nutritious. I also fry my meats then bake them. I tell ppl I use the 3 B's.( Not B.S.😂) Bread, Brown & Bake. Comes out DELICIOUS.😋
Yes, you are right about that. I found out after the few times I had been making it. It hit me make them into Patties 1st. Then lay in hot Oil. As you take them out. Yep! It's much better way.
I grew up eating these and also made with mackerel. Recipe was similar to this one back then. Now I have a new recipe I switch off with and we love it also. I take left over mashed potatoes and add about 1/2-3/4 cup. The rest is mostly the same except I add more chopped onion and just one egg. I use less cornmeal than flour. Just recently learned another option which is remove about half the flour and replace with cornstarch, which makes the patties much crisper. They are just as tasty cold to me as hot.
YOU WANT CRISPY ? DEEP FRY , NOW THAT IS CRISPY ,AND DELICIOUS , ADD BELL PEPPER AND CELERY , MINCED GARLIC ,ONION , 1/4CUP EA. OF ALL THIS HERE FIX'ns TO 2 CANS OF SALMON ,
We call them croquettes and I make them all the time. I sautee white or yellow onions and bell peppers in beef bacon fat then blend with the salmon, egg, ap flour, and corn meal and it's always a crowd pleaser!
They ste still a crowd pleasure when the family comes together and I love to kick it up a notch with sour cream and cream cheese grits and butter, wow.
I've noticed quite a few add cornmeal to the flour. I'm from the south and everyone I know or knew only used flour. Is this a regional thing or just preference? Just curious.
I mixed the flour and cornmeal together and added some old bay to my salmon, a squeeze of lemon and a few dashes of wostershire. Also left the bones in. No salt is needed.
I discovered a variation recipe for fish cakes when I got everything mixed up only to discover that I didn't have any crackers but Lance's peanut butter crackers, so I used them. Leave out the onion and add a tablespoon of fruit preserves, I'm not kidding, they're yummy.
We used a similar recipe and rolled them into small balls (not patties) and fried them. It was a great way to use up stale bread (especially those end pieces that kids seem to shun.). And saltine crackers. Also we mixed the salmon with tuna to make the salmon stretch farther. Recipe was passed down from great grandmother.
My husband was a Cherokee Indian and he taught me how to make salmon patties he was a good cook I wish my mother could have made those when I was growing up but it was something good that my husband and I got to share while he was still alive God bless you!
I add fine minced green bell pepers, as well as onions to my salmon. My late father in law said mine were the best he ever ate! High praise coming from a very picky man.
The bones are no big deal. My mother left them in. She would use a little flour and a little corn meal. Sometimes onions sometimes not. Salmon Cooked this way brings back many happy memories.
I made some of these a couple of years ago at a neighbors house and we loved it. Just a week or so ago we were talking about that and how we needed to get together and do that again. My Mom used to make the patties with egg, corn meal, dried bread crumbs, thinly sliced onions, salt/pepper and I don't recall if she added anything else. But they were incredible! Dipped in Heinze ketchup..,uh yeah! I'm officially hungry again. Hahaha.
My Mom and I have always used crushed saltines and mom always put them with peas and spaghettio's. Then we'd just put a squeeze of lemon juice. So good!
Looks good 😊 I like to add a little veggies to mine a little bit of celery, green onion, red pepper 🌶️ & the leaves of the celery really make it taste fresh, a bit tasting like fresh coriander.
Just a helpful hint: You need to make all of the patties first before cooking. That way your timing in the pan will be consistent and the same with all of the patties ~ approx. 2 1/2 minutes per side. Also a slice of whole wheat bread or saltines can be used in place of corn meal. Thank you for sharing!
Now's the time to stock up on canned Salmon, Anchovies, Sardines, Tuna for good health and good eating Salmon patties good with mashed potatoes or. Fried
I use crushed Ritz or Townhouse crackers with a little flour, onions and a touch of Old Bay seasoning. My family likes macaroni and tomato juice with them.
I use onions and Bell and color peppers, onion powder, garlic powder, old Bay, black pepper, seafood seasoning, and lemon juice, and a little mayo and either bread crumbs or sometimes corn flakes crushed up for coating, so good
I have made fried salmon patties for years! A very simple recipe. 1 can of drained salmon, 1 egg, 1/2 chopped onion and just enough flour to hold the patties together! Fry them in vegetable oil for a very short time! And yes, I do not take the bones out! They are actually a good source of calcium and you can crush the bones with your hands as you mix and form the patties!
Was just going to say; I crush the bones with the fish. So soft, you can't tell and good for us. I don't add any onions. Just one egg and some saltine cracker crumbs. I don't need flour in mine. I guess omitting the onion, reduces the moisture content.
"Pretty" doesn't make up for vitamin, nutrients, and all other well being stuff for your body! Your "simple" easy recipes (by taking out the BONES) instead of mashing up the already cooked, soft BONES...THAT HAS NUMEROUS NEGATIVE REMARKS. IN COOKING FRIED SALMON...PLEASE LISTEN TO THE OTHER COOKS WHO KNOW ABOUT...CALCIUM, MINERALS AND VITAMINS AND OTHER STUFF THAT ARE GOOD FOR YOUR BODY!
My gma used to make these every week. I grew up on these, my husband did too. Ive also introduced my grandchildren to them. Made them about a month ago, and Im making them today. Seeing this brought back so many good memories.
Mother called them salmon croquettes, when I cook them I use Louisiana fish fry,, eggs and milik to thin them out to form the patties, I like to make them thin also.
That looks so good. I think I’m gonna make some today. I always leave the bones in because they’re soft. They taste good and they have lots of calcium. And I usually make all my patties first, so that I can put them all in the oil at the same time, and they can cook at the same pace, thanks for sharing this recipe. I’m definitely gonna try it.
That sounds good. I do have a question did your mother ever make creamed spinach? I had some at a casino years and years ago and it was the absolute best creamed spinach I had ever had but I will have to say it was the first I'd ever had cream spinach the first I've ever heard of creamed spinach but it was absolutely delicious. I would just like a really good cream spinach recipe
Bones IN or Bones OUT ... It's really up to the person preparing / eating the patties. I Appreciate the video and will be trying this recipe the same way you prepared them. Thank you for sharing! ♥
Preference is probably based on how they were prepared when you were a kid... I add the green onion, chives.. leave in the bone and use flour, & bread crumbs to hold together... season as desired.... easy,,,, not as cheap as it used to be, though
The skin and bones actually add moisture and crunch. I take the bones out right away from the can and eat them up. High in calcium too. They r a soft crunch! Delish! They r meant to eat. Every bit of the salmon is great!
I liked how she took out bones I love country old fashion salmon Patty's my mom use make them in Kentucky and added onion and finely diced & chopped green and red bell sweet peppers and sometime those tiny red sweet cherry tomatoes. They were cooked in black cast iron skillet with bacon 🥓 grease . They was golden brown Patty's delicious served with side of fried golden white sweet corn and mashed Irish potato s seasoned white saffron and dash thyme the meal was fantastic,we had them every Friday night .
I tried this and found mine a little dry also. But instead of using another egg I used some of the drained liquid from the can and it turned out great. Thanks for the recipe.
My mom used to drain liquid in bowl, put tore up old bread in it to soak juice add egg. She put the salmon on plate unrolled and removed bone, then mix altogether . salt and peppered also. Fry them up in iron frying pan with small amount of oil.
These are easy and awesome. I like to make mine with a generous sprinkling of garlic powder for extra flavor. Also, I like to use chopped Green onion instead of white. Both are good, but Green onions add a little color. This recipe can also be made using canned mackerel. Mackerel doesn't have many bones if any. Would love to see more easy down home recipes. Thanks!
I make mine similarly, but I add finely chopped red bell pepper, green onion and Old Bay seasoning. I serve them with a roumalade sauce. I love them cold right out of the fridge.
You’re reminding me how much I used to love salmon patties. I need to start making them again and I like your recipe with the corn meal in it. You can get salmon with the skin and bones already removed, but I’ve always liked them and they are good for you.
I mash up all the bones, onion, and bell pepper chopped fine, salt pepper, flour, egg, maybe a little bread crumbs.I don't care for the texture of corn meal.Good cold too!!
I don't know if American salmon bones are not crunchy like they are in UK canned salmon but personally I love them if they are and they are also a healthy food type too. Instead of flour I use mashed potato with a bit of butter and salt and pepper mixed in and maybe a bit of dry parsley. The electrical can opener was a luxury! Very enjoyable video. Thank you ma'am
I make mine with potato too, mashed with a fork so it's a bit uneven and moistened with the fish juice, add salmon, splash of balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper and dried dill. I then dip in egg and breadcrumbs. I bake mine in the oven on lightly oiled tray to cut down fat. Some people like to add a few capers or chopped boiled egg. I take the bones out, because I don't like their texture, but that's part of the beauty of home cooking, you can make it how you want 👩🍳 Thank you for the video, it was interesting to see them made a different way.
@@BetPondue Haha Talking of boiled eggs Jackie you have just reminded me that I was going to add one to my vegetable rice that I have just eaten! Oh well, I know now what I am having for tea! Your recipe sounds delicious!
Your patties are gorgeous and yummy looking!! So firm and golden. Bread and cracker crumbs just don't do what flour does for flavor and firmness. That's how they were always made when I was growing u. The old way is still the best! Thank you for the memory 😋
Well done. I followed this to make salmon patties form my little grand niece and myself. Turns out that you were right when you said kids like them. She and I both enjoyed them. And of course, she was fascinated watching me make them.
We have been eating salmon patties for life 😂 My mother taught me how to cook them and I taught my daughter and the grandkids love them. We had onion and green bell peppers...what a tasty union 😊
Your salmon Pattie’s remind me of fritters. I’ve never tried cornmeal. Looks 👍 good. I use Italian bread crumbs mayo and mustard with a bit of flour and eggs. I love red onions in mine. Canned salmon is very good for salmon Patties. I like dill weed as well. A pinch of cayenne is good too. I use the same for crab croquettes or patties and tuna as well. Tastes great the next day even cold.
I'm 75 and I've been eating salmon cakes like these since I was 5 -- my mother's recipe but I update them with a little dijon mustard and dill! Use less flour and only one egg makes them moister and with a better texture. Good recipe to let small kids help -- they love to do the mushing!
You don't need to debone the salmon. Those bones are very soft. Just mash'em if you don't want to notice them. They are an excellent source of calcium!
I don't use the juice. I give that to my cats. I also remove the bones & the dark stuff in it. I use panko bread crumbs, old bay seasoning, baking powder, egg, & mayo. I love leftover salmon cakes for lunch.
Here in New Mexico they’re often served, even fast food restaurants offer them, during Lent season. Generally use bread or cracker crumbs and serve with red chilé to pour over. Delicioso 👌🏽
@@HowDoYouCookBackToBasics Wright's Cafeteria in Knoxville used to serve them and would ask if you wanted tartar sauce with them. The tartar sauce was a new one for me but once I tried it, it became a regular thing. Something my mother discovered some years ago was putting just a dollop of ketchup in hers when mixing them up. Really adds some extra flavor but careful not to overdo it -- the sugar in the ketchup will brown too quickly. Know what I'm having for supper, now -- you laid a craving on me. LOL
My sister-in-law used to spend a small fortune buying salmon fillets for her patties. I bought three cans of wild caught salmon and showed her how to use chopped onion and an egg for each can to make a full platter for five people. By using only a fork to pulverize the steamed-soft bones everything was incorporated (even the skin) into a smooth and uniform consistency. An ice cream scoop made portioning easy. Frying them to a golden brown had them on the table and gobbled up fast!

Your loss is Heavens gain
My mom taught me to reserve the liquid. Instead of adding another egg and more filler, she'd just add some of the liquid from the can. She also coated the patties in a light layer of yellow cornmeal just before frying. It was a breakfast dish served with grits. Leftover patties (somehow there were always 2 leftover patties) were sliced in half, heated and became two sandwiches.
hello😊 l don't usually use the liquid from the can because of the preservatives that's used to keep their shelf life .
My mother coated them as well before she fried. She’s German. I think she used the same ingredients here with parsley.
@@margaretshurland1614 The salmon I use doesn't list any preservatives. To my knowledge canned seafood is hermetically sealed and subjected to high heat which give it a 2-5 year shelf life.

I use boiled potatoes instead flour for filler yum
The bones are super soft and will not hurt you. There’s lots of calcium in them. Once the patties are cooked no one will notice them.
Leave them bones in there and eat them up yum!
When I was a little girl mom made this with saltine crackers , backbone is very soft, I’d eat that. Green onions on the side & fried potatoes 😁😁👌

I love the little bones in the patties sometimes my favorite part.
Yes I ate the whole can everything you're just throwing away most of the good nutrition and the bones are really really soft that's just plain dumb taking all that out
I absolutely take that slimy and black & grey skin out.... helps the flavor.
The little bones will cook away...I only remove.the big round ones. Now I've eaten Salmon with all the bones in them and they aren't hard to chew.
I was broke awhile back and needed the food pantry and they gave me about 5 cans of salmon in my box. Thankful for it.
I like the bones put in onions, red & green bell peppers & ground corn flakes salt & peppers some hot red peppers & use olive oil to fry them in so good
@DorisTessier-l9z I will try that
My mom used to use crushed saltines instead of cornmeal and flour.... now that’s good eatin!

My Mom and I have always used crushed saltines and mom always put them with peas and spaghettio's. Then we'd just put a squeeze of lemon juice. So good!
My mom also used cracker crumbs, one (1) egg, & chopped onion. Finally, she coated them with corn meal.
Looks good 😊 I like to add a little veggies to mine a little bit of celery, green onion, red pepper 🌶️ & the leaves of the celery really make it taste fresh, a bit tasting like fresh coriander.
They are so good in a sandwich mayo on bread, lettuce, onion & tomato good lunch healthy
What a great idea! I always wanted to use celery leaves for something.
Thanks for the tip and for watching! 😊
Now's the time to stock up on canned Salmon, Anchovies, Sardines, Tuna for good health and good eating Salmon patties good with mashed potatoes or. Fried
The cornmeal is what makes it sweet!
I use crushed Ritz or Townhouse crackers with a little flour, onions and a touch of Old Bay seasoning. My family likes macaroni and tomato juice with them.
I was going to say the same thing!
I use onions and Bell and color peppers, onion powder, garlic powder, old Bay, black pepper, seafood seasoning, and lemon juice, and a little mayo and either bread crumbs or sometimes corn flakes crushed up for coating, so good
They look sooo good I will try them thanks so much 😋😊😮
I have made fried salmon patties for years!
Just to add to my mix of salmon, I cut up bell peppers and saute them then add to my mixture. Also leaving in the bones is a plus!
AND THAT'S RIGHT🎉🎉
I make mine with egg and saltine crackers, nothing else. Very good.
Also add diced green peppers yum!
Add a 1tsp. Of sage to take it over the top delicious! It makes it so good with a sprinkle of seasoned salt. Yummy! Thanks for the video! 💕
Around here, we all loves salmon patties, bones and all. We takes nothing out, just mix somethings in. Thank you for your recipe.
You are so welcome! Thank YOU for watching! 😊
all the ingredients in this video, include 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon, "Mrs Dash" {yellow top}, it's located in the spice section @ the grocery

Yesssss good old salmon cakes bake beans and fried potatoes cornbread that’s the best!!!
Hate an Electric Stove, mine would be done on my Gas Stove while your Electric Stove is heating up!!!!!
I have to cook patties with rice and corn for my kids and now they grown up and still want the patties rice and corn when they come over
Unfortunately, where I live, natural gas isn't available. Soon though. Thank you for watching! 😊

YES, the green pepper gives it a whole new dimension and the flavor is decadent !
One can salmon drained (I crush up the bones and leave in) + 15 saltine crackers, crumbled + one egg. Make patties and fry. Yum!! ♥️
This is the way my mom would fix them except for she would roll them in corn meal to give them a crunchy texture. They were so yummy.
That's the way I've always made mine is with crackers egg and onions
I just use salmon, eggs and flour. I may try crackers next time.
My gma used to make these every week. I grew up on these, my husband did too. Ive also introduced my grandchildren to them. Made them about a month ago, and Im making them today. Seeing this brought back so many good memories.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. 😊
Reminds me of my mom cooking salmon patties. She always removed the bones too & also mixed with mackerel. So so good!
Ate them as a kid and still making them! With fried potatoes and onions!!
Add cornbread and mac-cheese DANG !!
Yum!!
Mother called them salmon croquettes, when I cook them I use Louisiana fish fry,, eggs and milik to thin them out to form the patties, I like to make them thin also.
Sounds great! 😊
the people down in Louisiana seem to be the kings and queens of cooking anything that comes out of the water 🙂
What is fish fry? Already made cornmeal with flour??
What were u cooking in the boiler?
The only thing better is slapping them in a big biscuit but any kind of way is delicious, even salmon salad. 🥰🥰🥰
My grandma made these in the 60's when we were kids , DELICIOUS ❤
Our dinner was salmon patties, boiled potatoes & cream corn yum
Sounds great!
Deby Morgan, Maine still
Ours was salmon patties, pinto beans, cornbread and mashed or fried potatoes!
We did boiled potatoes and canned peas! I still make these all the time.
You know how to eat!
My mom used make creamed potatoes, peas & pearl onions as a side dish with salmon croquettes. I still make them today.
Perfect meal 😋
My mother also served hot stewed tomatoes and biscuits with the salmon cakes. Yum!
My mom always made creamed peas and homemade buttermilk biscuits with salmon patties. I sure miss my mom's cooking❤️
@@odessadelphine6061 how to make creamed potatoes?
Bones IN or Bones OUT ... It's really up to the person preparing / eating the patties. I Appreciate the video and will be trying this recipe the same way you prepared them. Thank you for sharing! ♥
Thanks for watching! 😊
I use bell pepper too.

My grandmother made a salmon loaf with a lemon sauce. It was wonderful. I made it a few times and got it right from memory.
Sounds amazing! 🤤
I would love that recipe. Sounds great.

Please tell us the secret recipe for your lemon sauce.
Wud u tell me how to make that? U don't have to give me the hole pro recipe?! Just please tell me the main thins

I’m sure you could Google how to make a salmon loaf with a lemon sauce. I know I am going to google it. Good luck.
I usually serve with a white pepper gravy that goes deliciously over the patties and potatoes 😊
I love canned salmon, bones and all! All of it is very nutritious

Sounds AMAZING!!! Thank you for watching! ☺️
I tried this and found mine a little dry also. But instead of using another egg I used some of the drained liquid from the can and it turned out great. Thanks for the recipe.
That’s what I should’ve done also. I’m glad your Pattie’s turned out great! 😊
Me too. Lots of flavor in that juice.
My mom used to drain liquid in bowl, put tore up old bread in it to soak juice add egg. She put the salmon on plate unrolled and removed bone, then mix altogether . salt and peppered also. Fry them up in iron frying pan with small amount of oil.
My mom made this alot when I was growing up just like yours. It was really good she made mashed potatoes and a vegetable to go with it.
Thanks!
Sounds great! I'll try that next time. 😋
I make mine similarly, but I add finely chopped red bell pepper, green onion and Old Bay seasoning. I serve them with a roumalade sauce. I love them cold right out of the fridge.
Good stuff! 😊
That adds to the original recipe. Sounds tasty!
Yes 👍 roumalade sause
Me too!!bones and all!!
Old Bay really makes them very good.
Thank you for the recipe. My mother made these several times a month when I was growing up. I love salmon patties. 😊
Made these twice now,and they were great.Made them with brioche buns ,and put coleslaw on top.....sooo good!
Sounds yummy!!! 😊
Thank you so much! I'm going to try putting a potato in my next round of salmon that I'll make. Super excited to try it!
@@HowDoYouCookBackToBasics 💜
I 100% agree! Thank you for watching! 😊
That is awesome!
Ok
You are bring back memories. My mom cook them all the time with rice. She used green pepper and onions
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I love the ingredients you use in yours also. I bet they’re delicious! Thank you for watching! 😊
I'm 75 and I've been eating salmon cakes like these since I was 5 -- my mother's recipe but I update them with a little dijon mustard and dill! Use less flour and only one egg makes them moister and with a better texture. Good recipe to let small kids help -- they love to do the mushing!
Grandmas recipe: Bones in; no cornneal; saltines; no onion. Yum. Nobody so far has mentioned that any leftovers are great cold.
Try it with ritz crackers instead of saltines. Mwahh😘 so fricking good
I have always use saltine crackers my whole life it's the only way I will make them
You don't need to debone the salmon. Those bones are very soft. Just mash'em if you don't want to notice them. They are an excellent source of calcium!
My grandmother used saltines too. No onion. That's how I always make them.
Interesting! I don't think I've ever heard of a restaurant serving salmon patties before.
LOL
Oh my goodness! I'll have to look for that restaurant when the hubby and I visit there. We're regular visitors of Gatlinburg and Dollywood.
My family used small amount of vinegar poured on the party. Added flavor.
@@HowDoYouCookBackToBasics there is a "soul food" restaurant in my city that offers them!!!
Yummmmmmm!!!! 🤤🤤
I loved salmon patties growing up and still love them! My mom always added creamed potatoes and peas & carrots mixed. Wonderful dinner. Mmmmm! Good.
