Simple HDR - why not give it a shot? (in stereo)

  • High dynamic range has been around for literally years now, and yet, most content creators seem reluctant to use it, which is odd, because almost everyone is now using a display which is capable of more than 100 nits.
    Is it because it looks like a complicated mess of expensive standards and engineers jargon? Maybe we've reached that tipping point of making it usable for everyone.
    Time for you to give it a shot?
    P.S. This is the stereo version - sorry about the previous upload!

    Fantastic video - this is exactly what I've been looking for, as an amateur wanting to give this a go on my Macbook (+ accompanying consumer HDR monitor). I really appreciated the walkthrough of project settings in Davinci Resolve and the fact that you kept it simple while explaining the key concepts!

    Thanks for the great and clear video! The best and simplest explanation of HDR/SDR differences I've seen. We hope and believe that more and more people will dare and want to take this path, because there is no going back after that. 🤗

    I mean you convinced me. You forgot the part that you need a Mac AND an XDR display to make it simple. If you're on Windows it's a lot more complicated.

    Mate, seriously, why am I not seeing you on your own Netflix series?!? Your presentation style is outstanding - you could be covering armageddon and I would still feel relaxed and informed. I love what you do, and thank you for sharing it with us. 👍

    Thanks for this amazing Video and I totally agree, unfortunately most of the Tech TH-camrs never or only rarely use HDR. It took me like a couple of months to finally get it right as no one could really explain easily, how to grade HDR. I like your simplified way to lead the way. And yes if someone want to go deeper into color grading there is always more to it. I can highly recommend the workshops of Ollie Kenchington who does an amazing job in explaining color and how to grade it in Davinci Resolve. I experimented a lot with HDR and tried to release my couple of videos on my channel always in HDR. And yes, sometimes it takes a long time on TH-cam, before you can officially release it - because people would have to come back two days later to see it in full glory. Keep up the good work of your channel!

    Even though you've simplified HDR as much as possible (well done for that - good work) I will be watching this video a few time so I can properly digest all this. I'll also be experimenting with HDR. Thanks for this

    An other passionated video 👍
    For HDR noobs : Never use HLG, this format is already obsolete, HDR10/PQ is the main standard for the years to come. But TH-cam's HDR is a tad broken.
    And that's wrong for the darkness range ⚠ HDR did also stretch down to a deeper range of darkness, HDR is not only about cranking up the maximum brightness.
    As for the darker blacks on OLED unfortunately they all suffer from black clipping down to a certain level so they are still not able to reach the dimmest dark tones, they'll clip to 0
    For the Dolbyvision/HDR10+ thing those techs are like embedded dynamic range compressors, as an editor you're supposed to make the brightest image possible in post production(Think of a shippable master file straight to the customer), upload it with Dolby's metadatas then Dolbyvision will shrink it down automatically on any (compatible) consumers screens so the picture doesn't clip on any particular device.

    I edit every video in HDR because it's the future. Even 1080p video edited in HDR looks better than SD 4K.

  • @00anta
    @00anta ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the main issue isn't technology or lack of interest, but rather the fact that all industry levels move at different speeds and have different needs. Broadcast is stuck at 1080i/720p for years to come, maybe even forever (I've even had broadcast engineers complain for converting progressive instead of shooting interlaced...in 2022). Then Hollywood using 2K/4K acquisition, and then streaming services pushing HDR and OEMs pushing 8K because they've got to come up with something to sell new TVs and new cameras. In the meantime, videos are now mostly consumed on phones where resolution and even HDR, are meaningless. And then there's what clients need and 99% of them don't even ask for 4K, much less HDR, delivery. In fact, the only clients to ever ask for 4K have been other production companies delivering in HD. So I think to most people, even professionals, HDR is just really unnecessary and like you said, too much of a hassle and a complication.

    2:38 may be i miss something but nits is linear, not logarithmic, and have nothing with squearing anything. 100 nits is exactly 10 times less than 1000. Maybe you miss with human eye phenomena that perceive logarithm-like subjective neural feelign of brightness.

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mathematically you are totally correct. Unfortunately, what I failed to explain was that in reality, 1000 Nits would only look about twice as bright as 250 Nits. Light is proving a very tough thing to measure!
