Dock and Anchor Lines - Polyester or Nylon?
I used to own a Wharram Tiki 38. I sailed it solo for a few years and then sold it when my plans changed. The 38 was what O considered the minimum for reasonably comfortable living aboard and ocean sailing. Your 51 will be great for what you plan on using it for. Being built for composited will also help reduce the big issue with older Wharrams, "rot". Even the best maintained plywood boat is susceptible to it. Good luck with the adventure.
Thanks, Tim. Great interview. I'll definitely follow his adventures, both in learning about his boat and sailing, as well as his research on endangered and unknown species. Thats very cool. He's definitely "Living the Dream "
Hanse glues the stringers to the boat. This is a no no as it decreases strength below nominal, while decreasing weight and improving sailablility. This is the same thing that Beneteau and Jeanneau do. I would never buy one of these although they are great to rent. AFAIK, the MOODY also glues the stringers. I would need to CHECK ON THAT, before looking into the Moody. Otherwise, it is a great boat. If you look at the Jeanneau 55, it actually says the stringers are glued in the specs. Otherwise, this sad fact is hard to find. If Moody does as RAN III and properly lays up the stringers that would be a buyable boat. Otherwise it is a rental. It is easy to look up RAN III's recent layup.
Bruce anchors are best, they stay buried on the swing
I have been on several user groups for various products and projects. The problem I fear is that everyone with an opinion is an “expert”. In aviation I find that to be dangerous; in sailing, uncomfortable. I just hope you learn quickly who likes to talk vs who really knows. I never needed just comments and long winded chatter, so I hope you are able to quickly learn who is giving sage advice vs opinions based on little experience.
Do you know the channel "Wildling Sailing"? A young English lad restoring a Wharram in the Netherlands. www.youtube.com/@WildlingSailing
Ohhhhh man!! Thank you guys for the opportunity!! This was such a fun chat! I’m so honored to share the story and hopefully inspire others to follow their dreams and join the sailing community!! Thank you again Tim!
Hey great project you have. I love following Wildlings with a Wharram. I hope you have contacted Daneke who was James Wharram’s partner. She’s based not far from where I live in the UK and she’s super helpful. I’m subbed to you now and feet of luck. Andy UK
Hi Tim. Having built a Plywood Dory using the best quality Hardwood Marine Ply, and even if I say so myself, did a more than reasonable job of putting it together and used best two pot epoxy paint on the damned thing, it just didn’t last well, so I stopped being a fan of plywood, despite dad making me a very nice Mirror Dinghy to get me Started with Sailing. Give me GRP every time.Later, I came to realise what a very large problem Sailing around on a Lunchbox, Free Restaurant for Termites a Plywood Boat Really is, and heck, even having plywood Bulkheads in a Boat can rapidly become a really major headache, and not just in the Caribbean and Southern States of the USA. As far as I am aware, there is only One Boat Manufacturer which is taking the Termite Problem as seriously as it needs to be, and that is Island Packet. Maybe Catalina is nearly getting there with it’s not a splinter of wood on deck approach . Termites are a very big problem in Europe, around the Mediterranean, etc, and the damned things almost became established in Britain. The area of Termite Mounds in Brazil, is larger than the area of the British Islands, and Termites are the number one producer of CO2 in the World - which is just for perspective, and doesn’t really matter, because our atmosphere actually has a pretty serious shortage of CO2 Content believe it or not, and which can easily be confirmed by any Real Scientist, and a big hint that this is so, is greenhouse growers adding sub optimum but economic levels of CO2 to the air in their Greenhouses. Only Desert Varieties of Plants remain largely unaffected by the shortage by the looks of it. Hoping everyone has been having a Great Christmas, and Wishing you a very happy New Year. Bob in Wales. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️⛵️🇬🇧🏴
Wow Bob I didn't know termited were such a problem over there! That's wild! Maybe that's something we should talk about for the Euro readers/viewers. Can we have a chat? I can be reached at comments at practical-sailor dot com
You might want to fact-check the termite and CO2 information...

I miss sailing fast boats: spent lots of time on a conser 47 makes my Catalina 42 seem like a greased brick. My wife wants a Tayana 55 next and I think I may die of boredom.

Will the fuel vent line absorber still work if you accidently overfill the tank and diesel enters the device?
And, Port wine is red.
My understanding is that boats should have good ventilation with dorads (my boat has five) to minimize the moisture forming in the boat. I don't see how these products do anything to stop the moisture from forming, they are reactive AFTER the moisture forms. By the way, my boat is kept on a buoy 24/7/365 in Puget Sound without any dock power available. I use three Dry-Z-Air dehumidifiers and service them about every 3-4 weeks over the winter.
I'm pretty anal about keeping the inside dry. I know where water comes from when it's in the bilge so I look for those sources often. My bilge is completely dry 95% of the time. Where some think I go "overboard" is in not allowing water in through the companionway. To collect any morning dew or rain etc., I keep a towel at the bottom of the steps and change it when it gets damp. I've also gotten a small dehumidifier that I run during the summer. It drains directly to the galley sink. I also have a temp/humidity monitor that is wifi to my phone at home (Govee). Personally, I don't car for the canisters due to cost.
I have lived with a couple of inches of water in the bilge and my keel bolts are stainless steel. However, I have a dehumidifier and space heaters so the boat is seldom damp. On occasion, I use a manual bilge pump and just pump the water into a bucket to toss overboard. Wouldn't be a real good idea to make a bilge pump that sits 1/2 inch or so above the bottom of the bilge so almost all of the water is pumped out? What am I missing here? Great article; I love this formum.
Great video! I'll definitely reference it the next time I'm teaching new sailors. One correction - at 5:30-5:35 ... one shouldn't blindly believe all channel buoys are in their correct place. I recently traveled down the TN River and the Tombigbee Waterway to Mobile AL. The TW is very narrow in places and the barges sometimes have trouble negotiating some tight turns, which can cause them to drag bouys out of position ... way out of position ... sometimes even breaking their mooring chains and then that float away - onto shore or way down stream. So we definitely do not always go by the current position of these buoys. Instead, we do a sanity check on any seemingly oddly positioned buoy(s) against it's expected position based on the navigation chart. When an expected buoy is missing entirely, we go virtual ... use the position of the expected buoy in the e-navigation app (e.g., Navionics) and navigate around it as if it's still there.
lol learning how others remember this is cute. When I was very young and taught “Red right returning” I like “Red left out” because I always needed the refresher LEAVING the marina. Also don’t think it was mentioned… buoys are numbered red EVEN, green ODD numbers. Which seems to be part of a theme port even starboard odd.
Hi Tim, I was so worried about this crazy USA Red Right Returning Rule, when I came to the USA to buy a Sailboat, that I did an online Course on basics to help me not to get it wrong, sorry I forget the name of Course and who hosted it now, but it was a really good Basic Training Course, and when it came to it, I was able to Navigate fine, even at night around New York Harbour, though as that really didn’t end well, due to the Wrecking Gang Working that Harbour, I recommend avoiding sailing around that Harbour At Night At All Costs,as it became clear that thanks to having an exceptionally Tough Sailboat, I was the First one to Survive their very Frequent Attacks on Boats (seems there is very big money in Salvage) .I did write a letter to President Trump, detailing the events that happened, and recommended that the State Police be investigated for their obvious involvement in premeditated Cold Blooded Murder, and hopefully they are starting to get somewhere with it by now. I had to warn off a young lady journalist from investigating the Case, as clearly these people - who also appear to involve MS13 - wouldn’t think twice about killing her. This is why when the facts became clear, NJ Local Police - who were simply outstanding - immediately provided me with an Armed Bodyguard. Sorry, a bit off topic, though related, so everyone, wherever you are Sailing, please exercise caution, if considering Sailing around Any City at Night, and try to stick with only doing it in Daylight. Who would have thought a Wrecking Gang would have been working New York Harbour in the 21st Century? 🤔 Best Wishes to all for a wonderful 2025. Bob, still Boatless in Wales, but my Piggybank should fill up again for a Sailboat, in the Coming year, so things look up.👍🌟🌟🌟❤️⛵️🇬🇧🏴
Just one extra note: make sure you know left and right
Red, colour of port wine. Drinking port is wrong so its not on the right ! Rum is fine though 😇. Walking past a new ? crew member at a yacht club after a race. He had green electrical tape wrapped around his right shoe & red around his left shoe. He was carrying 2 jugs of rum back to his crew table. He said i guess your wondering why. I said nah think i got it. 😁😁😁😁
I own the last (hull 16), of Hinckley’s SW59’s. It’s an amazing boat. Rugged, capable, reasonably fast, and so comfortable. But my next boat may well be a lightly used D40 for all the reasons described in this video. There are few sailboats in the world that would coax me to part with my beloved Hinckley, but the super cool D40 is one of them.
How Cool
Yes correct but why is it the yanks do it differently to the rest of the world? By this I mean returning to port, red to port not green! Origin of the term port and red lights, women of the night happy to be home😂 I wont even start on ft, inches vs the decimal system for measuring distances😅
Port. 4 letters. Left. 4 letter. Red.
Exercise is good 👍 I own motorcycles already. For me what will matter the most will be the ability to cart things home on a rack or in a basket. I’m sure you could even adapt a bike trailer to work.
I LEFT my RED wine in PORT
Port wine is red.
"There's a little bit of port left in the bottle".
Here in Australia (and I'm guessing a lot of the rest of the world) it's the other way around. Port is is on the left side when returning. Also the shapes are opposite, the green is the triangle and red is the square.
Your videos are also watched i Europe. Here green should be on your starboard side when inbound
Underwater "drones". Equiped with tech that is unknown to all but a few...we hear about stuff decades, after they are made operational...if at all.
Port and Left are both 4 letter words!
Yes there’s port left in bottle
Bravo, I see so many people sailors and powerboaters just not knowing the basics. I'm in Southern California, and a lot of people here just jump in and go, without a clue.
My experience has been that since sailing is more involved and complex that powerboating, that sailors tend to have more basic knowledge than powerboaters do. A couple of weeks ago I had some insight into what many boaters are likely like. A woman was asking me some questions about sailing and her questions indicated that she had some boating experience. She said that she and an ex-husband had a bowrider and they later upgraded to a cuddy cruiser. She asked if sailboats and powerboats needed to follow the same rules and was surprised when I said yes, they do. I then mentioned that one difference is that when underway, sailboats have the right-of-way (I purposely didn't use the correct term of stand-on vessel because I was confident that she wouldn't know what that was) and she said she had no idea that was a rule. She had owned two boats and didn't have that basic knowledge. She then told me the story of being on a powerboat owned by someone else running at high speed along a narrow part of a river and their wake swamped two canoes and put four people and a dog into the water. I know that stretch from charts (it's too shallow for a sailboat) and travelling at speed is dangerous there.
Is there any red port left?
I was told steering oars were on the right of boats before rudders were used, so they always had to tie up on the left side which became known as the port side.
Carbon fiber is 30% lower than glass . Thats were the advantage stops the rest is all downhill
The ICW is a big shallow ditch. I recall seeing a guy in waders fishing about 20 feet from my boat as I passed.
Shouldn’t the colours in the intro be the opposite?
Thank you for this story. I had seen these type of drones but had no idea of the current scale and use of these. Scarey and cool all at the same time.
this is so good. Thanks Tim.
God that took some explanation
Nice video. I remember this a slightly different way from a power squadron safety course when I was 12. In addition to Right Right Returning, I was taught "Red left port". The red nav lights or on the left (port) and when leaving on the left (port).
That is a great way to remember it! Thanks for sharing 👍
I like this one. This makes more sense than anything for "Red Left Port".
60 pound ultra is "only" 2500 at Tiffany's.. i mean, West Marine.
@Practical Sailor We remember it the same way, that's how I was taught in the Coast Guard, red and green the same way. But I know some folks that say you pour your port wine with the left hand. Red right returning is what I was taugh as well,
Practical Sailor made a smart decision hiring you Tim. Nicely broken down for the beginners. I’m going to share this with my family who just come sailing with me a few times a year. I try to say both terms when I sail with inexperienced folks so they pick up terms by association. Happy new year!
