Barry McGuire (from the New Christy Minsrels, a folk group in the US) Barry wrote this protest song which is completely relevant today. I met Barry a few years back in the tiny village of Fairfax, in the San Francisco Bay Area. I still remember every word of this song which was released in the 60's when i was in high school.
Thankyou for posting. I thought I knew all the Pogue songs - I saw them plenty of times in London back in the day - but this is a new one to me. Thanks for sharing.
People must remember, some of the tracks on the Pogues box set aren't quite 'finished'. This is how the die-hard fans demanded it...to include stuff like this.
Self fulfilling to most who live the high life. We haven't "turned the page" on this number yet, the eve, brink or boarder. Still just brick's in the wall. Paradise by the dashboard light "takes on a new meaning today" as they drove through the flames. Ring of fire, always in the eye of the beholder, it behooves me to say sorry for your loss.
I used to go to AA meetings , Jack , but I can't and don't intend to stop drinking...all we talked about was drinking...jeeez , it was enough to turn me back to drinking , this to my ears is ace :)
Saw Shane solo at a festival in Austria, 15 years ago... drunk like a sponge, barfed on the stage, wasn't able to talk, but VERY able to sing... Can't believe the bloke's still alive. Good for him, though. I guess.
pf slone the eve of Destruction is my favourite song. it's so true it's on it's way round again as the government America and certain other countries . are having a ball and Scotland's STUCK in the middle of the wrath. great listening and so to the point. but ANOTHER Dilemma this time my friend. and do believe that we're on the eve of Destruction. SPADES SHOVELS BARRELS rolling DICE.🖤🎲🖤. ♠️🖤♣️♦️🚫👀.
Another outake from the hells ditch sessions. This, Aisling, Donegal express and NW3 were never finished due the state Shane was in. I’m convinced that the band was quite creative in this period and had they had a proper break and allowed Shane to get proper help, this album could have been much better. Spider has said as much himself
Hey, I have sang in various degrees of being drunk...is that the right phrase? And totally sober. ...As well. And here, a big karaoke scene, massive. And my gf films everything I sing, and...Hey she sings like an angel... But shit, when I see and hear the fxxking recordings of myself... I always sound shit: sober, tipsy, drunk, really drunk, shit faced... So bless Shane Patrick Lysaght MacGowan Best
@CrankCase08 Not really. I heard this version first, and I prefer it. Mostly because of the stronger rhythmic element. I prefer Shane's voice too, but I'll admit, that's an acquired taste.
if you don't like the pogues..you are probably dead inside......i suggest knitting or joining the amish community....although i'm sure the amish (and knitters) probably like the pogues too...they appeal to all God's children...except the protestants...sometimes...although i'm protestant...i still like them......hmmm
Still timeless in 2024. Absolute legends🙏
what a great interpretation. shane is so unique and great.
Indeed
been listening since 1977
and NEVER heard this
THANK YOU
@@LarzGustafsson wasnt speaking specifically of The Pogues but punk in general.
Finally, someone's sung this while appropriately in the bag.. :)
Barry McGuire sings it like it's the eve of destruction.
Shane Mcgowan sings it like it's the next day.
PackerBronco yes, with a raging headache
AHHHHT ,,, GOT WHAT YA DID THERE HOSS lol ;)

With the hangovers that man had it probably felt it…..DTs 😵💫
I love this comment. I'm taking a screenshot so I never forget it.

The late PF Sloan wrote Eve of Destruction
Barry might own it but he didn't write this song.
This song is as corny now as it was then.
I love this. I need to be this drunk sometimes when I think about the world . . .Thank you for posting!

Never never boring. 🎶♩🎶🎶♩
classic song, classic pogues......excellent!
Bloody great version of a brilliant song. Downunder South Australia
Wow! I couldn't imagine anyone covering this after the ferocity of Barry McGuires version. Shane pulls it off!!!!
Never underestimate the power of a drunk Irishman, they get shit done.
Maybe you should listen to Lemmy's version. th-cam.com/video/7VYAkK18Rx4/w-d-xo.html
fantastic version...of course...shane's music is always the best!
If ever there was a song that deserved to be sung while drunk it’s this one.

I have always loved this song by Barry Mcguire but by the Pogues, Shane was GORGEOUS !!!!! 🎶🎶🎶🎵♩🎸🎵♩🎶
Shane’s eve of destruction is a self-reflection. Still love this tune
Beautiful
Just great !!! Thanx

Good for him, though.
I guess.
Love this song
that made my day, awesome ^^
What an absolutely great cover of this song....But I mean, Shane Macgowan, who could expect less....
Pogues forever! Get in line Dubliners!
@SwindonByf - thank you from us all for that tip, mate, gooooooooooood one!
SwindonByf. Your da man. a thanks to you for all The Pogues feeds
Still on it 😭😇😎❤❤❤
The good old days
Yeah !
I really love Shane 😃
Feel it !!!
Quality.!! x
He´s great, in this way the world have to be ...
this is great. pathos.
CRAP
Thanks Pogues
Great song and covered by many artists. No big deal if you don't agree but would that be the point of the song?
No problem Shane is great, I respect that you'd want to defend him
Mac can defend himself.
I honestly think Shane wouldn't give a fuck if it was the eve of destruction.
awesome version, to each his own. The Pogues were under rated to hell and back. Bit like the Sportz in Australia
class
Luv
I am a huge Pogues fan, but I prefer the punk rock version by The Dickies.
Forgotten Rebels recorded a good one as well.
@Cryptonwheezer good one mate!
Me too.
Versione magnifica
PF Sloan's lyric's are right up there with Phil Chevron and Shane Macgown.

@theholyone6 One man in a rock band sober, let alone an Irishman. top bunch of lads
@000TrueGrit000
It's not a Bob Dylan song, it's by Barry McGuire.
How is it I've never heard this song before...I thought I've heard all songs by the Pogues.
its a cover of a barry mquire track
Covered by Barry McGuire. P.F. Sloan wrote it
Thats becouse it is not song by the Pogues he he he !
1 can tell McGowan's vocal from the thousands!...
PS,..to those who think Shane cant sing right,..he has always slurred his words, and if you care enuff to listen, you can hear him well.
sounds like Shane is on the eve of destruction
Unlike these days, when he is on the evening after destruction.
construction! listen!
Oh, fuck off.
Isn't he always?
fucking class!
ya cant beat the pogues, perfect drinking music!
¿Por que cojones me gustan tanto de The Pogues?
i like
Don't really know why this song needs a cover. I got the message the first time. Not that it's obsolete or anything like that.
Sad that it will be, indeed.
Wish they had done a sober version of this😂still amazing though!
I wouldn't bet much money that the original pogues ever did a completely sober version on any of their songs.
Listen to Barry McGuire singing it, you will get your sober version.
Yea Shit!!!
That was probably his idea of sober
Oh so true
Melcome Hard To Believe

Pretty sure this proves that P.F. Slone and Shane MacGowan were time travelers from November 2024. Let's hope they weren't optimists.
Anyone know when this was recorded?
At the end of the world
This sounds like a parody, and we all know why.
I love the Pogues but I prefer the original version of this.
no shit !!!this is killer......tanx 4 psting
You misunderstand me. I mean he's a westerner as in he's from "the West" meaning a Western European nation not a specific area in Ireland or the U.K.

@xXxWhiteWarriorxXx Umm, anything he sings is the 'drunken version.'
Go Shane Go!!! Fucking love this man and I'm not gay neither.
So what? The man is a genious. A lot of rock stars use heroin and you still listen to them.
The eve of the hangover.
Itwont always be contemporry. one day it will be true.
@MsTresana hahaha well said
wow
thought this was a johny thunders song, but now that I listen it does sound like Dylan.
@CrankCase08 Not really. I heard this version first, and I prefer it. Mostly because of the stronger rhythmic element. I prefer Shane's voice too, but I'll admit, that's an acquired taste.
sounds like easy 2 gallons of mc evan.. and i am from bohemian forest after my 5th Budweiser from Budweis
Regardless of whether or not that theory has any legitimacy, it doesn't apply here because both Shan MacGowan and Barry McGuire are Westerners
@goji2099 Shane Mcgowan sober? not going to happen in our lifetime
Drunk ? Yes. Nobody else could fo it.
if your on the eve of destruction why not stay permanently pissed, you'll know nothing about it, a bit like mcgowan. lol.
Both may be true. It's just a matter of perspective; Plus... you know... the "give a fuck" factor.
Could almost be a CLASH cover!
He does sound like joe strummer
I love The Pogues, but honestly I do prefer the Dickies or the Forgotten Rebels version of this song.
oh shit where is the german beer????!!!!!!!!
@ThomaSKAptijn Actually I like this version better
... or in his.
if you don't like the pogues..you are probably dead inside......i suggest knitting or joining the amish community....although i'm sure the amish (and knitters) probably like the pogues too...they appeal to all God's children...except the protestants...sometimes...although i'm protestant...i still like them......hmmm
Same backing but Bob Dylan
You just don't get it.
Shane is always inspired, but I prefer McGuire version.
