I have to disagree about "How to Save a Life." It's odd that I'm even saying that, because I don't like any of The Fray's other material, and the formula for this song would not automatically sound like a winner to me. But yet, it actually works on some level, and I even find it somewhat emotional. It's pretty rudimentary technically, but it has a piano riff that even almost 15 years later still rings in my head and feels quite pretty. (Among that era and genre of alternative rock musicians, the comparable for me would be "Clocks," which has a similar kind of effect on me.) I don't ENTIRELY disagree with you about the singing, he has a certain lack of diction and nasal in his voice. But it is on pitch, and I actually think carries a certain amount of emotion. But the biggest reason I disagree with you are the lyrics, which are actually based on a very touching story. The singer used to work at a camp for troubled teenagers, and one of the teenagers he was paired with killed themselves. He felt guilty that he couldn't save him, and also took into account the reaction of the people who closest to him, which inspired the lyrics. My own personal experience gets drawn into this (though I liked this song before this happened). I knew a teenage girl who killed herself when I would have been around his age, and a lot of the sentiments he captures in that song actually ring somewhat true from my experience. As I result, I trust that it comes from a genuine place. It's a bit sentimental, it's a bit saccharine. Sure. It's not among my favourite songs. Let’s argue: why the FUCK does Chris Brown STILL, consistently get work and respect in the music industry with his severely aggressive track record against women even while the industry is trending towards equality between men and women (particularly in rap)???? And why do new generations endorse him (ex: Jack Harlow featuring Chris Brown) while the times are changing and newer generations are becoming less accepting of individuals such as Chris Brown?
Because forgiveness is a thing .. I don't listen to his music anymore because I couldn't get past it ...but for society to forgive him for the Rihanna incident, I believe thats a good thing
If that’s your logic why is Rihanna one of the biggest artist in the world? It was reported and she admitted to being abusive to Chris first but nobody gonna talk about that cause that was the norm then right?
He doesn't at all get the recognition he deserves for his music. If he didn't do the terrible things he did he would be bigger than MJ undoubtedly. Chris Brown is the most talented artist of all time.
@@gabrielsousa8701 you really thunk hrs that good? Personally I think his voice is garbage. Especially after hearing his feature on the new Joey Badass album. Luke he's just not that good. He can sing high pitch notes which is hard for male singers, but that's all he can do thats noteworthy in my opinion. And I don't think he is anywhere near someone like MJ in terms of pure raw talent. His voice is not as impressive as someone like that. Or someone like Whitney Houston if we're talking about people like MJ. Also Chris does not have many timeless classics like MJ does, because a huge majority of his music is forgettable and un-noteworthy. And he's been in the industry long enough now where he should have some mega hits that span generations like MJ, so it is a fair point. I feel like even if he had no past of abusing women, he wouldn't be much more accepted or popular than he is now, like he would be like Jack Harlow famous. Like he would really famous at one point, but not quite Drake famous. Where he's really popular and he gets a few big moments in the spotlight but his music would be ultimately unmemorable outside of his fame.
Those songs have back-up vocals, but not double-tracked vocals, and are probably stronger for it. The commenter is mostly talking about his newer stuff like carrie and lowell where he's singing on top of a recording of his own voice.
Hi, I was the sufjan commenter, firstly thats not double tracking on those songs, secondly my issue is more the style in which he double tracks them, i agree with fantano when he says that Elliot Smith does that and it doesnt impact the songs but with Sufjan it sounds so clinical and over-processed to me, it's Elliot Smith's loose style that keeps the songs sounding raw despite the double tracking
@@enzosamuel571 Totally agree with you. C&L and the CMBYN songs have always left me a little cold and I think you've pinpointed the exact reason why. I don't know why songs about such quiet and delicate subjects would need more "pop" as Fantano says, and really all that the double-tracking ended up doing was to neutralize the idiosyncrasies and vulnerability of either vocal take

My guy switched his psychedelic sound to be more pop focused rather than rock. I feel like his more indie pop sounds have way more layering than some of his rock songs. Slow rush is a great example, you have to listen to almost each song for a month straight if you want to get everything out of it and personally I love that. Elephant still definitely takes the cake tho lol.

CB is still a knobhead even aside from this issue tho
@lemon diesel nice brainlet take there caveman
@lemon diesel found the knuckle dragging, smooth brained shitlord that compares women to vicious animals
Didn’t bill burr make that joke ages ago
"Ye" is now officially a self-titled album
The ye counts as a self titled album aged well i would say
3:33 This aged beautifully lol
Let’s argue: why the FUCK does Chris Brown STILL, consistently get work and respect in the music industry with his severely aggressive track record against women even while the industry is trending towards equality between men and women (particularly in rap)???? And why do new generations endorse him (ex: Jack Harlow featuring Chris Brown) while the times are changing and newer generations are becoming less accepting of individuals such as Chris Brown?
Money
1:32 Anthony, that's not a good way to talk about slavery! Not cool man, not cool...
1:35 Okay Anthony you didn't need to tell us what you would do to black people if you ruled the US.
I declare this to be a great comment
I also didn’t like when he just repeated the n word like 7 times out of nowhere
They're called boomwhackers Anthony
Chris Brown has talent 🤦🏽♂️ 💯
Billboardguy1 I disagree he brings way more to the table than r kelly (no comment about the others because there legends)
Billboardguy1 he also doesn’t just sing
You really just gonna do The Fray dirty like that huh Fantano?
Is that Sufjan commenter really going to say that when "John Wayne Gacy Jr." and "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades" exist? The hell, man.
I don't know why songs about such quiet and delicate subjects would need more "pop" as Fantano says, and really all that the double-tracking ended up doing was to neutralize the idiosyncrasies and vulnerability of either vocal take
@@swappingpartsglad I'm not the only one, although I think when Fantano said pop he meant like 'to stand out in the mix'
Anthony don't you ever come for Matchbox Twenty like that EVER AGAIN
I got pretty butthurt about that. And I liked how to save a life.. damn what kind of intervention song would you write, melon?
@@beardpandaa melon looks at every song in an technical and analytical way, which is why he's so critical as it's bland, generic and the other reasons he pointed out. I honestly like the song and MB20, but I understand he's sentiment.
I was gunna make a joke ab Chris Brown being good at domestic violence but im a lil late
10 years late
Black Me nah, its happened since.
Lil Crip if u don’t like him why u care so much about him
Black Me he is a celebrity, im gunna hear ab him here and there.
Lil Crip you probably only clicked on this video because his name is in the thumbnail. And his name was mentioned for like 10 seconds of the vid, and u still commented on him 😂😂😂.
I grew up with those music sticks. Both the wood ones and the plastic tubes. I dont think schools use them anymore though.
Bro why'd you have to go so hard on "how to save a life." That song gets me in the feels. Also, this song is about paramedics and emts right?
I thought it was about a friend who's on drugs and overdosed
Billboardguy1 where’s your hit song?
@@derekmiles9069 Man can have an opinion, also that point of "This person did it but you didn't do it" is kind of a fallacy because it does nothing to take apart one's point of view other than pointing out the lack of success in a particular department.
Of course Chris Brown is talented, mans did a front flip on the beat drop to March Madness
Bad news Anthony, I have no memory of using the rhythm sticks in music class
Gotta go with John Darnielle for the desert island. Legit over 1k songs between all the projects. Plus his books and poetry. Guy doesn't stop writing
Dangshnizzle i was hoping he would say that lol
The tweet at 3:35 aged greatly Lmaoo
My guy switched his psychedelic sound to be more pop focused rather than rock. I feel like his more indie pop sounds have way more layering than some of his rock songs. Slow rush is a great example, you have to listen to almost each song for a month straight if you want to get everything out of it and personally I love that. Elephant still definitely takes the cake tho lol.
Seriously though the how to save a life hate seems super contrived and I genuinely would like to hear you go into more detail about why the lyrics aren’t good and why the vocals are bad. It’s a fine song lol
Melon, your haircuts are like the Life of Pablo and So Much Fun. It's always the same haircut but you revise it every once in a while. I appreciate that 💕
where'd this undeserved "how to save a life" hate come from?
Matchbox 20 in the 90s and early 2000s kicked ass. Their music wasn't very groundbreaking or experimental or anything, but they cranked out some of the best pop rock I've ever heard. Their first and third albums were both near perfect.
Ye is now legally a self-titled album
Nah dawg he is unique.
*Nobody would ever beat a really talented singer except him*
calling chris brown a douchebag is the greatest understatement of the millennium
How so, apart from the Rihanna incident?
Melon please stop making those weird sounds in my ear I already bought 10 ridge wallets
Those rhythm sticks just gave me a flood of nostalgia
Unfortunately Anthony, my music teacher just “taught” us the recorder and I never even saw a rhythm stick. I honestly blame my music teacher for not getting me to really love music sooner.
