    Guys, come on. 1:30 into it and your editing is kinda lackluster -there's not enough time to focus on the shrimp because every time a punch goes off you immediately pan back to the reaction cams. It's disorientating, and a little bit annoying.
    If you really want the reaction cam, try showing it minimized in a corner whilst keeping the shrimp cam up and maximized, so it's possible to actually focus on it without being like *punch "Wow!" *punch "Amazing :0"
    I'm not trying to insult you. Whether you take my criticism as valid or not is your choice - my experience may be different to someone else's.

    I'd like to point something out. Since comments get flooded that a pistol shrimp would kill a mantis your completely wrong. I've owned several species of Alpheus, Neogonodactylus, Gonodactylaceus, Odontodactylus, and Puesdosquilia.
    All my Alpheus freely roam in my 125 gallon reef. Numerous times my yellow tang, clownfish, and even the very same scarlet cleaner shrimp shown in the BBC video have been directly shot in the face when they got too close and no ill effects to this day.
    Pistol shrimp are SCAVENGERS, and they're HARMLESS there has been no evidence of a pistol shrimp killing anything. This snap is used to scared off predators and find mates, not for hunting and killing. The shrimp usually never leaves it's burrow ever and survives of the "Algae" and "Detrius" that grows and appears around their home. BBC is the ONLY source of info that shows a pistol shrimp killing something. BBC has a huge reputation for over dramatizing their work making things seem even more deadly than they really are.
    If you need video proof there is a video of a mantis shrimp of equal size get shot in the face numerous times and nothing happens.. the mantis eventually kills the pistol shrimp and steals the burrow.
    Here's my pistol shrimp peacefully living with another fish.. harmless.. infact they're blind and will pair up with certain shrimp gobies and work together.. they're too blind to even aim and hurt anything without the fish. I've been shot by him in the past... nothing. I was laughing at how pathetic the shot was after all the *rumors* out there. I stick my hand in his burrow alot and get shot at and just ignore it. Tiger Pistol Shrimp with Yellow watchman goby.
    Do they still make the "cavitation bubbles" that reach hotter than the sun? Yes but it has absolutly no effect except to make the loud snapping sound to "scare" away predators and call mates.
    In summary, my point is a pistol shrimp will NOT kill anything.. a mantis would kill the pistol shrimp hands down.. infact I've seen emerald crabs kill pistol shrimp before.

      Made some grammer errors in that post.. as well as spelling.. forgot my coffee this morning.

    • @TheReefer17
      @TheReefer17 10 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Omaer Khan Actually very false. We can actively find and collect these animals as pets in shallow water. Not saying that they're aren't any that are found deeper but in summary to the race itself depth doesn't make that big of a difference. They're also very common and you can even see any store that sales saltwater fish selling a real live pistol shrimp. The water pressure theory between damage in an aquarium and damage in the ocean is very logical and makes sense but overall the animal is not ment to kill only to call and defend making it rather useless as a "weapon"
      If you saw this channel's video on pistol shrimp, even in a home aquarium (or in this case lab) you'll notice the cavitation bubble exploding.. if water pressure was an issue that wouldn't have happened.
      That species shown in the BBC video is none other than the curly cue pistol shrimp. These species host live curly cue anemones (which bbc failed to record the shrimp being with indicating how set up it was) and these species are yet another common one in the aquarium trade. I'm not exactly sure what the species name is but they often are just called curly cue pistol shrimp, carribean pistol, or red pistol (not to be confused for japanese pistol).
      They also go by the name "Snapping shrimp" rather than "pistol shrimp" to try to educate public away from the lack of proper knowledge the term "Pistol shrimp" now provides thanx to bbc.. Most people will walk into stores, see a pistol, and freak out like it's the end of the world when they won't harm anything in your tank.
      Now a mantis shrimp or more properly known as a stomatopod on the other hand is 100% true. Everything you hear about their punch, make light and heat, eyesight, etc is all entirely true. Their aggression varies between individguals but in general they can be killing machines. The only thing that gets confused is how much a stomatopod can see. Even I'm confused with the exact number of colors but often when refering to the punch you'll hear "Hits with the FORCE of a .22" it's not the force it's the ACCELERATION of a .22 which is a common mistake made by everybody.

    Thank you for this video. You guys seem to have gotten some really awesome footage of this amazing creature, but much of the video was dedicated to three humans talking instead. Also, at around 1:09 and 1:17, there are reactions to something which seems to be exciting, but I'm not sure what it is. Some picture-in-picture could show reactions along with the animal's actions. I'd love to see that so I wouldn't have to guess. That way, we could react along with you! Looking forward to more!

  • @tompekarna
    @tompekarna หลายเดือนก่อน

    cavitation is not caused by "ripping water molecules apart", but by lowering the atmospheric pressure in the wake of the movement which causes water to reach the boiling point and the result is steam. It occurs in the vortex created by boat propellers too..

    what do you mean with rip apart water?
    it looks like it's going so fast and when it suddenly stops the water wants to keep on going forward extremely fast (wants to keep momentum) and because the arm stays behind that water it creates the vacuum because the water can't fill it in quick enough
    right?
    or is that what you meant with rip apart water?
    I am sorry for all grammar mistakes

      Also the extreme heat generated by the movement of the mantis's arm creates a flashbang of up to 4000C so it's not just the momentum but the heat generated by the momentum through friction that creates the vacuum.

      It punches prey, not random objects. i don't even think it knows about the glass or what it is since it's transparent.

    Pistol shrimp vs Mantis shrimp, whats sad is the pistol shrimp is overshadowed by the mantis shrimp, even though it has 4000C strikes. I saw a video a small fish going near a Pistol shrimp, it had died and had gotten a burn on the skin
