You missed the best one, the new dcl045. Works for much more than just under hood, best light I've ever owned. You can hang it overhead and zero shadows underneath you.
I bought 2 of the DeWalt Tripod lights on clearance for $115 a piece. I made the first purchase for $159, but when I went back to Home Depot the next day I noticed the last two marked down to $115 so they gave me a refund and I bought another. Great light for when you lose power in the house also.
These are really great videos for research. Nicely explained on all aspects. Helps to decide what to go for and where to spend the money. One of the best channels on TH-cam
I honestly just buy Ryboi lights, they have a lot of the Milwaukee features for a fraction of the price. But for versatile lighting I'll often just use a battery to AC adapter and then just string up LED light bulbs. Low watts and lots of light for cheap.
I still use the DeWalt DCL061, it can take a 18 volt, 20 volt or be plugged in, I'm too invested in the DeWalt battery platform to be changing it around now.
I guess the main purpose of the Bluetooth for the dome light is if you hang it up high you are able to control the features from your phone instead of perhaps going up and down a ladder. I have one and it was explained to me in the directions for the purpose of the Bluetooth.
I've added the belt clips to my smaller dewalt lights so i can clip the light to my belt and aim it in front of me is alot better and helpful. It will also clip to my ladder
Harbor Freight sells a light made by Braun which is a 7200 lumen hanging work light with a 360 degree output. It sells for about $90 now. Got mine about a year ago for about $70. They've definitely gone up in price but it is a fantastic light that will easily light up a whole room.
There are 4 more Dewalt lights. There is a magnetic one (DCL044) which can attach to something like an electrical service panel. There is a hybrid worklight (DCL061) that gives you an extra outlet. There is also an automotive hood light (DCL045) that folds in half. Then there is the giant area jobsite light (DCL070) with tool connect and built-in charger.
As a GC, I own the small one on the left and the big dome one. The small one is great for plumbing under sinks and general purpose flashlight. The big dome one I use for painting, and jobs with no electricity.
I am very happy with a tiny Aliexpress light which works with the DeWALT batteries. It was listed at 140 lumen and it seems actually meeting that spec. It is so small you dont need to worry about the size. It also works as a charger via the USB ports. The only downside is the on/off button. It got really dusty during grinding, now you van feel the dust in the button mechanism
I've always been leery of using any non-Dewalt tool on a Dewalt battery. Dewalt batteries don't take well to over-draining. Dewalt brand tools are built with this in mind. I guess you could use cheap, non-OEM batteries with it though.
Recent conversation with another trades person, and Milwaukee really seems to take trades people into consideration. When I started out, Milwaukee was only what plumbers and electricians used. Now I see more and more carpenters using their tools. The crew who taught me how to do all this all had Dewalt and is why I bought into it. But on a recent visit with them, they have all started buying Milwaukee. I guess battery powered pressure washer are more important.
Agreed. I grew up watching my dad (plumber) use dewalt. So I naturally went the dewalt direction. Now he is entirely on Milwaukee and I'm moving that way more and more.
dewalt does make an area light that is dual power. The DCL070 from 500 to 7000 with tool connect. It does have a larger footprint. It can be remote controlled with tool connect pretty awesome light.
I had that dewalt 1500 lumen spot light, and when I switched from Yellow to Red 20v tools, that light is the tool I missed most. I never liked the big area lights nearly as much, and they’re always a distraction when in view, being able to see the light source. I would just put that 1500 lumen on a cabinet or something higher then eye level, and point it at the white painted ceiling. A large living room or kitchen could be sufficiently lit up for a guy with poor eye sight, and with no shadows.
I’ve been using Makita tools for the past 40 years and while I love them to bits if I was starting out again it would definitely be Milwaukee. In the last couple of years I have started buying there hand tools and it’s becoming a bit of a obsession especially since I got the packout trolley.
I'm not sure who lied about that information, with that said, they are packed with plenty of that good old Chinese trash inside. Very common to for new tools out of the box fail to operate, no sweat though, they're made so cheap, they'll throw you another one quick though through warranty. The obsession you speak of is real however, that goes to their master marketing team. They are great at that, I give credit where due.
That small dewalt torch is surprising how far the beam goes outside. I'm an electrician in the uk, and I've got the small dewalt and the 500 lumens one, and the rest are all Bosch, as all my main tools are Bosch
DeWalt does make a dual power light; I had a couple of them a few years back but got rid of them as they simply didn’t hold up. I don’t thing they even make them anymore. DCL061 is a 1,500 lumen 18V, 20V Max, and 120V AC multi-power light. I owned two and got rid of both as they weren’t built DeWalt sturdy and just didn’t work well for me. I actually converted some standing dual 500 watt homogeneous lights into battery lights with 18 watt LED flood lights and DeWalt battery adapter or charger; they work great can be pointed in different directions and you can turn on 1, 2, + as you need more light. I purchased the lights off Amazon and they can run 10V-40V DC and work great, better than any lights I’ve ever bought; I also wires in a 3 way switch and charger allowing me dual use 120V and charging the battery in the light and with a single flip of the switch operating the lights off the battery.
i have one of each of those lights except the tiny one. i agree with everything you said. they are for diferent types of work. the dome light is great if its overhead but i use the tripod the most or the small 500 lumin one. i never saw the point in the bluetooth , you still need to get up there to change out the bateries so you may as well leave the ladder there.. duel power is a feature that is realy lacking . if i wasnt so invested in dewalt i would get the milwaukee ones for that feature alone.
The benefit of the blue tooth is when I’m done tiling the floor I don’t have to manually turn it off when I have it hanging from the ceiling. As opposed to having the battery run out so it turns off.
Excellent, balanced review. I have the DEWALT 500/250 and the tripod light that saved my bacon while remodeling the kitchen and dining room of my 120 year old house. Let’s hear it for darkened, coal soot stained framing lumber! I was not aware of the many short comings of DEWALT vs. Milwaukee. However, I’m hip deep in 20 volt and Flexvolt yellow/black and at this point can’t see much benefit to mixing battery/charger platforms. Maybe if I take the dive into some battery powered trim guns but not right now. Any preferences in head lights? The bands always stretch out on mine.
Armytek wizard pro in the warm tint. Hands down the best headlamp with also the best head band. Light clips in and out of the band easy so you can use it as a handheld and strong magnet in the base.
I can’t justify spending 229.00 on a Dewalt tripod light. Just buy some Bosch laser level tripod stands for 49.00 each and mount some HD leds to them. Those tripods fold up into almost nothing. Some of the prices for these tools now are complete BS. But people keep buying them and the companies never bring inflated prices down because of it. Get creative. Save some money.
I mounted a Coast HL8R rechargeable headlamp onto a hard hat. It has three brightness settings(800-245 and 50) and adjustable beam spread. Wherever you are working the light is there for you. At 125 bucks it is a pricey light but well worth it. On medium it lasts 60 hours to the battery will last all day if you need to use it that long.
Check out the armytek wizard pro line or the zebra light style of headlamps. Runs on the 18650 cell and is a huge leap forward in light output and compactness and design. Smooth ultra wide beam is perfect for work. I really like the warm tint.
I call my dome light “mr magoo”. I set it on a Ridgid tripod at a height I won’t look directly into it 😎 I do trim/cabinets etc as well. Milwaukee does a great job at being thoughtful and practical while designing their tools and storage… Good vid!
You left out the massive DCL070 light… I have and use the dome light set up on a tripod… The bluetooth comes in handy when you’re leaving the building and the door is on one side and the light is on the other… It saves you from using your little flashlight app on your phone to find the door… When you get to the door just Bluetooth the dome light off and shut the door and lock up
That was a really informative look at lighting Spencer. I am mainly on Dewalt and have been looking at moving away from corded lights so this will help with my decision
I just wanted a low powered light fo power outages like hurricanes ect. Low light a little more than a candle so it can run for days. There are third party ones that use Dewalt batteries. Was without power for 8 days once!
Thanks so much! This is the exact video I was looking for. I'm going to stay with dewalt because I have so many of their tools and batteries but I see that Milwaukee is a few steps ahead. Thanks again!
6:52 A excellent point! I like the 500 lumen Dewalt light (have had it for more than a year), however, for bigger lighting needs, it is more useful to use the Milwaukee dual power feature.
It’s been like 4 months now and I’m running the entire house with Milwaukee, Dewalt, kobalt, ryobi & Ridgid lights. last time bill cam $512, I’m lucky I have some 10k variety of the best lights LOL, saw the difference then, bill came a little over $100
🤗 GOOD INFO…SPENCER 👍FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT OR REPLACEMENT …IT SEEMS LIKE MILWAUKEE HAS AN EDGE 🧐 In my experience in the past…different brands each have edge in some tools 🤗😍😍😍
Many ppl dont realize Dewalt put out 2 versions of the spotlight. One with a red LED on the bottom. The red led light is great when your camping and dont want white light.
I love to have light for my garage and I would love to have as many lights as you do lol. I like that task light though. I need something for when I detail or work in my car but I did see that desalt underhood light they have now.
super great review Spencer! Cool idea for a video ... and love how you clarify what the lights do for what someone needs. Happy New Year to Insider Carpentry 2022!
Nice review, I totally agree with you on DeWalt's lack of innovating magnetics into their lights. I did a TH-cam video on the DeWalt DCLO77 DeWalt task light as a Modification. Please check it out. I sure hope DeWalt does some updates soon. Thanks for your review 👍👍
Do you still use the dewalt to milwaukee battery adapter? I feel the same way about Dewalt lights being basic and wanting more from. With Milwaukie having dual power the battery adapter would seal the deal for me.
I think {pretty sure} you can get an adapter type thing where as you can plug it into the mains and the power end has a male battery type terminal, must be a bit like the adapters to use one battery on another manufacturers drill etc, not quite legal and above board but a very useful set of items non the less ,ps...... , quality work as always m8
That’s my favorite portable dewalt light, too. Great for working in a cabinet under a sink - or looking under cabinets for whatever I dropped. This video turned out to be a solid recommendation for Milwaukee lights. Have you any opinions/experience with adapters for dewalt to Milwaukee batteries? (Did I see a red battery on one of your yellow lights?)
Supposedly there are issues with completely draining them with an adapter. I don't have a problem using an adapter on things like nailers but it could be an issue on lights. I haven't tried an adapter on lights personally.
That little 2000lm flood light you could just mount a camera tripod thing to the bottom of it and use one of those instead. Cheap enough for a camera tripod
I have milwaukee lights my favorite is the m12 rover the new version lasta really long time and good light from a small package I find my self using that one the most
I really love it when working on vehicles, being able to just put a light on the side of the vehicle when changing tires or filling washer fluid or whatever is amazing
Very mindboggling and disappointing that dewalt didn't integrate dual power into that 5k lumen dome light being that it's such a battery guzzler. I have the DCL061 work light. Has dual power and can daisy chain, and I got that back in 2018, has held up well. I think maybe the 2k lumen light in this video was it's replacement
I have kept 3 of the smaller lights for my car , bedroom and the main floor of the house since I am now by myself. I have each of these lights. I want to get rid of them , but I now need a price . Ideas ? I love the tripod light I have found the Milwaukee light in the garage.
Have you seen the DeWalt hood light? I'm thinking about getting it at some point. I have the Makita ML104 12v lantern light. I like hanging it on the ceiling flush mount cable before it's installed. Works great, but I think the DeWalt 20v hood light would be a better version.
@@InsiderCarpentry Nah man. You fold it and hang it on a cable where the cable is still sticking out before the electrical finish. You do more trim than me, but I've hung it on strapping if I'm doing steel stud soffits around plumbing and ductwork. If I'm trimming I hang my Makita lantern light on cables sticking through the ceiling. I don't have to move it around or adjust the angles. It illuminates the whole room. The DeWalt one looks better. That's like saying only mechanics use impact wrenches.
Awesome information thanks. I know this is a bit off topic but you did a vid about the dewalt mailers and having to replace more than one. I was wondering what was the failure point of these guns. Was it the same everytime or different. Thank you for any feedback.
I’ve almost bought that 2000 lumen flood several times but the price is just offensive for how basic it is, can’t do it. Might just find a better light by another brand and get a battery adapter
My new Dewalt DCL050 250 lumen bulb head flops around way too easy. The only way to use it is set it down as it's difficult to use it as a handheld. Or is mine defective?

A lot of parts inside milwaukee is makita apparently that's why they are so good! I will say their design and also batteries are awsome though.

9:26 - You can get a 1/4 threaded 150LBS magnet off amazon and screw that into the handle. Game changer.
EXCELLENT ! Pully hook and rope for hanging Dome light. ❤❤❤❤❤ GREAT JOB!
I just picked up the 5000 lumen 360 light, I too would rather have dual power vs Bluetooth
Which one would you recommend for camping? Like a lantern
Spotlight has red light as well i love it for getting in aad out of my deer blind
If you have a white ceiling point the 1500L light up and it will light the whole room with a comfortable warm light.
That little 2000lm flood light you could just mount a camera tripod thing to the bottom of it and use one of those instead. Cheap enough for a camera tripod
I have milwaukee lights my favorite is the m12 rover the new version lasta really long time and good light from a small package I find my self using that one the most
The rovers are just amazingly well thought out lights.
Ideas ?
I love the tripod light
I have found the Milwaukee light in the garage.
Out of all the lights you have, I only have the smallest and the largest. But I have 2 of those large ones.
Great review I agree the dual power is much better.I like my dewalt tripod but it doesn’t last long 30-45 min
Are there no mains adaptors that plug into a DeWalt battery slot? That would give you the dual power functionality you're after.
Hmmm.... Not a bad idea...I'm tempted to try it but I'm no electrician.
@@InsiderCarpentry Is there nothing off the shelf that does this?
@@InsiderCarpentry Spencer the Dewalt DCA120 does what you need, though it's for told that need two batteries. There might be a single equivalent ?
Have you seen the DeWalt hood light? I'm thinking about getting it at some point. I have the Makita ML104 12v lantern light. I like hanging it on the ceiling flush mount cable before it's installed. Works great, but I think the DeWalt 20v hood light would be a better version.
I have, but I don't do automotive work so it's a no go for me.
What would you recommend for lighting up an outdoor sprint area? Around 60 yards long, 15 yards wide
exactly what i was looking for. Thanks!!
Perfect vidéo man, that was exactly what i needed , thx and keep up the good work
The 500 lumen flood light is a great way to get blood blisters. Ask me how I know... still my go to light tho.
Hi what was the small Milwaukee folding light you used on the shelf
I’m a big fan of Milwaukee lights
Great review and good points on the Milwaukee.
I've got the skinny lantern and stand up bazooka
2000 is my go to light
I overlooked that one for a long time but its a solid light. I just wish it had more features like milwaukees rover.
I’ve almost bought that 2000 lumen flood several times but the price is just offensive for how basic it is, can’t do it. Might just find a better light by another brand and get a battery adapter
Agreed. I looked past it for a long time.
They have updated your favourite light.
Can I use the new dewalt FLEX 20/60 volt batteries with these lights?? Worry about burning out a bulb/unit...Thanks
I live with my headlamp on.
I'm the same. It's easiest and most efficient. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother bringing the big lights along.
Fantastic review thank you very much very helpful thank you
My new Dewalt DCL050 250 lumen bulb head flops around way too easy. The only way to use it is set it down as it's difficult to use it as a handheld. Or is mine defective?
Sounds defective.
Did you do a video on a dewalt battery adapter for a winch?
Could please confirm that dewalt 20V DCL079R1 Tripod Light can work with Dewalt 18V 5.0 Ah Battery
*Welcome back*
Great video and wonderful information
Wish you would have went over runtime with them.
What is the runtime per amp hour on these lights?
are any of them water proof?
Hey Spencer, what brand is the red Tstak at the top on the dewalt trolley
Craftsman Versastack. Basically the exact same thing as Tstak and can be purchased at lowes.
@@InsiderCarpentry ok well I live in London UK, can't get to a lowes any time soon
Craftsman is the brand it’s under if that helps.
