This is a Traditional *Yoruba* Nigerian wedding. It'd be helpful to specify because "Traditional Nigerian Weddings" look verrrry different depending on your ethnic group.

Its same in Ghana ...i think its same everywhere in Africa...😂😂😂. So in Ghana we say always take your number and +50...especially when its ooen like funerals, traditional marriage ceremonies and naming ceremonies. Of course now some people are doing a "strictly by invitation " policy. However prepare to receive some insults from the African 'aunties.'🤣🤣🤣🤣

The 🇳🇬 wedding culture is spot on, however, there are hundreds of tribes in Nigeria. Each tribe has there own traditional wedding practices. Great video. Congrats to the couple.

Many of my coworkers are Nigerian so I’ve been to two weddings. Sooo beautiful and so much fun. Of course I loved the food and dancing. The cultural aspect is just awesome. Way better than any American wedding

Nigerians are one of the most intelligent immigrants in the us if that's where u are talking about. I watched a documentary yesterday, and literally 40 percent of people in ivy league school are from there. Lucky ducks. They are either doctors, or lawyers, or buisness owners lol. In my job my boss is Nigerian and she is soooo nice and rich lol. I wonder how African Americans are falling back if Africans Nigerians and otherafrican countries come here and thrive. A mystery to me.
Euphoria Rose I think it’s because Nigerians are RAISED to be smart for example my mother went to a Nigerian school until she was about 13. In her school your exam scores are broadcasted to everyone in your year so if you fail an exam EVERYONE will know. In my opinion that embarrassment will motivate you to do better. And you will end up excelling

I think people mistake distinction for tribalism. Each different culture and its distinctions are what makes Nigeria the beautiful mosaic of a country that it is. For us, it’s important to understand the beautiful aspects of each culture and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. This is a Yoruba wedding, and if it was an Igbo wedding, that distinction should also be made to showcase the beauty of the tribe 💁🏾♀️

As a black American, a product of slavery, this makes me very sad. We are so disconnected and have no such traditions from our original culture. What a lovely event and the bride was gorgeous! Having family like that is really wonderful. I bet we would be far more successful as a group if we were able to maintain families and events that unify us such as this.
Slavery is slavery, but in Latin America, Afro-descendants nonetheless preserved way more of their ancestral cultures and languages. For example, Cuban "Santeria" is basically traditional Yoruban (non-Islamic) religion.
We do still have customs and traditions from where we were taken in Africa, it’s just unfortunately a lot of African Americans, like yourself, arent aware!!

I used to work in banquets and African weddings are something else. Everyone was so nice, the food was AMAZING, music was as well. I remember there were 4 women that exchanged larger Bill's for single and they made it rain on the newly weds. This was also when I realized the influence of african music on Latinx music.

Was really surprised by some similarities of nigerian culture to indian culture. We also spray money on the wedding on family members, bride and groom and basically anyone who dances well 🤭 of course theres some subtle differences but wow loved to know that we share the love for colourful clothes, passion for dancing and of course FOOD ! 💜💜

I’m African American. I took a DNA test and it revealed that I’m mostly Nigerian. I’d love to embrace the culture I never knew and have a traditional wedding. This wedding was absolutely beautiful and very informative!
Listen you can't just call yourself Nigerian because you saw in a DNA test because of your ancestors, Nigerians are very tribalistic and unless you are a direct descendant like from your great grandparents or grandparents you are very much American take pride in that. I'm tired of seeing black Americans want to lay claim to a culture that they are very far removed from it is insulting to the people. You don't see white Americans stress over their European roots so why stress over your African roots? Enjoy being American and the culture blacks have created over there.

As a Nigerian with both Yoruba and Uhrobo heritage.... I can say yes there are difference in our traditional marriages but there are also similarities. The fact the a Yoruba marriage was use to portray our culture shouldn't make anyone mad. it a celebration of love ( with a few different scenes and events) and that's what matters

What a fascinating culture! We Africans in the diaspora(I’m from Guyana 🇬🇾) have lost 😞 so much!
You can start from your lineage. The marriage rites is very simple. You can start from your family and elders coming together to instill this practice and dowry for your young women in your family. As for African clothes, thank God you can get that in your country too. I would do the same if I were you because I'm first African. Just look at some Nigerian and Ghanaian weddings to see how it's done and what part of the culture you want to infuse into yours. It will work. Shalom!

Awww I'm Nigerian and I love our weddings but I'm not a big fan of big weddings lol. My wedding is probably going to be super super low-key, without all the fanfare. Plus, I don't wanna spend a lot of money on a big wedding 😂.
If you come from a rich family, you can't avoid a big 9ja wedding. If you come from a large family, you can't avoid a big 9ja wedding. In 9ja weddings are not for the couple, so you have no say in the matter. It's a union of two families (including but not limited to the families' friends, neighbors, coworkers etc, that's just how we roll in 9ja regardless if the ethnic group. We are rich in people, we never lack people.

That's our culture in Africa but especially in Nigeria lol. There's also a tradition where the husband hides and the bride is holding a marriage wine and she has to find him in the crowd. When she does, she kneels in front of him and serves him the cup. When he drinks it it kind of shows he accepts her.

I wish i wasn’t stripped of my heritage because I’d love to have a wedding like this! I used to say that I only wanted to marry an African man just to experience this type of union with so many family and friends.
Maybe try a DNA heritage test and whichever one you match with more try to learn more about that explore and have your wedding this way if you want!
Or try learning about west African countries, odds are you come from many of those places. You have your pick of the culture. It’s unfortunate that African Americans were stripped of their African heritage, but the culture that arose from it is truly something to be proud of. Everyone copied black culture, even in Africa, black culture is everywhere. Black Americans truly are a special group of people. I have never seen another culture have such a global impact the way black culture does.😊😊

I’m Pakistani and our weddings are pretty similar, over the top. money is thrown in bride, groom and family. Money is asked from the groom when he walks in. And food is VERY IMPORTANT for the people, people only go for the food 😂. Marriage is seen as such and important thing too and a big thing in someone’s life.

@Jeina O. You are right. Who cares whether it is Yoruba, Igbo, Urhobo, Efik or Hausa weddings. They are all Nigerian weddings in a general term. Yes there are more than 200 ethnic groups from that country and each has its own culture. Some who complain about this want their own culture to be the center of discussion probably because of how they are by nature. I don't care what name it is called as I am familiar with the different cultures of the people living in a country that is our neighbor.
