The way she speaks alone makes me want to believe everything she says, but "I do not look like my journey" is definitely something I'll be taking with me.
I wrote the same line in my diary
Me too.
I loved the perfect delivery and attitude of that line too! It was perfection!
Yes, indeed. I know what you mean. But the actual expression is, "I don't look like what I've been through", but it has the same connotation behind it.
The way she speaks is artificial, designed to activate emotions but ultimately meaningless.
"You are rubber, they are glue. And every ignorant thing they said about you bounces off of you, and sticks to them" Damn, that's powerful.
I loved this quote too🎉🎉
A word, okay!!! Loved that.
It’s similar to the childhood rhymes: “sticks and stones may break my bones (ouch) but names can never hurt me…” But they did and do. I LOVE this TED talk ❤I would bet almost everyone has experienced something similar, challenging us to believe in ourselves! I spend little time in front of a mirror… Do you? Let’s start!! 👍
@@rrhines3151and is !!!!
Literally what we said as kids
Lol I love what her mom said about her. What our parents say about us matters. It sets the foundation for our self-esteem
Not everything they say matters.
not if it hurts your self esteem some ppl didnt grow up with the most supportive parents
@@wallacerangel616@may_0reo816 Hence why the person says that the things your parents say set the foundation of our self esteem. I am someone whose parent used to always call me very nasty things, and it does indeed set your foundation, especially if said to you very early in life.
..."start a meaningful practice of looking in the mirror and loving what you see. Believe in what you see.
If you can't love it, then respect it. And if you can't respect it, then encourage it. If you can't encourage it, empower it.
And if you can't empower it, please be kind to it."" Sheryl Lee Ralph
this has to be one of the most beautiful things i’ve ever heard anyone say 😭
❤
I really liked that she said that too!
"I do not look like my journey".
As a woman of color, this resonated with me a lot.
Reeeeeaallll deep down in me !!!!
Samee
Woman of color? Are you a rainbow ?
IT resonated with me as well. It's so sad and true. We look like we got it all together when the world is collapsing around us, in us . But, we are Resilient ❤. All Praises to The Most High.
@@butterfly9841 seeing someone be foolish in real time is so rewarding
I love this woman so much, she is the definition of the word "regal" in every sense
oh hey fellow pixel
Her voice screams "queen" 👑
yes God!!!!!!!
That’s why I call her Princess 👸🏿

My entrepreneur daughter met her at this years 2023 Essence fest and she spoke a powerful word of encouragement to her which was confirmation of what others have done. She said she was walking by and she looked at her and said "Come here sweetie" and when she was speaking life over her I was speechless as I needed it at that moment." God gives us what we need when we need it. 💯🙌🏾
That's beautiful. May the lord bless your daughter greatly 🎉🙌🏽

Thank you.
I’m gonna try not to skip but my adhd is fighting lolol
This TED Talk was very impactful! What a lesson in just a short timeframe.
My god I love this woman. Didn’t really expect to watch a full Ted talk on my lunch break, and end up in puddles 😭
Same 🥲
2nd. I thought I was going to watch a minute or two but this was so needed.
"I do not look like my Journey" Speaks to my core.
This moved me to tears in the middle of my pilates workout. As a middle-aged immigrant woman I have felt that pain, and shared that dis-belief in myself and it is only with age that I like who I see in the mirror. She is now my best friend and because of that I can be my best self to others. Congratulations on a well deserved Emmy, I have been a long-time fan.
This is so beautiful to hear. I'm happy for you.
That grown woman energy that we ALL need!! ❤👏🏽🤌🏾🔥🔥
She gave this same speech to the Rutgers graduates this year. Was awesome to see in person.
A phony
As a fellow Jamaican woman I salute you. Absolutely powerful and inspirational ❤🇯🇲
❤🇯🇲 ❤🇯🇲 ❤🇯🇲
What a powerful performer. God bless you Sheryl Lee Ralph.' One of the best talks on TED. Love this. What a triumphant talk.
She could’ve ended it at 00:46 and it still would’ve been one of the best ted talks I’ve watched
In a long-term period of unemployment, trying to find work in a job market that I dont' think anybody completely understands, and feeling a little low today - thank goodness - I found this!
She captivated me when speaking. This felt like a form of personal mentorship. It’s like she was speaking to me personally. Really loved this! ❤❤❤
The comment I needed! I wish she could be my mentor 🥲
Making the decision to lay and bed all day today and listen to motivational videos due to being overwhelmed in life. I already feel like this video is the right start. ❤
You got this. I used to do that When my body didn't have the strength to move. Then all of a sudden it was like life came into me. Keep listening to those messages, it works
@@Haywood.2802 thank you 😊
Hope you’re both doing well. ❤️ This talk is filling me up faster than I can handle, haha.
Look at her moves, hand to eye coordination, absolutely in sync and rhythm. Enjoyed watching listening to her.
Wow! She sure has a STRONG voice, presence ,and force! *whew!* 😲
What an absolutely inspiring orator. Thank you Sheryl Lee Ralph!
She is amazing , when she shines it gives space for others to do the same
Just love her!!! Her confidence is contagious!! ❤❤🥰
yes,contagious!!!!
This woman was a part of my childhood. She exhibited such class as Moesha’s stepmother and she still exhibits such class now.
It was the best 15 minutes of my day! This TED talk was so worth it, what a woman Sheryl Lee Ralph!
As dignified as ever! Only a mature spirit can appreciate such an outstanding woman. ❤
This was so theatrical, it also almost felt like a sermon. I loved every minute of it🥺
This speech was terrible and unorginal because there was nothing solid about it......
@@MakeMeCare89 okay😂
@@Elle-gm9rt believe in yourself - how many times we heard that before?
@@MakeMeCare89 🤷🏾♀️plenty of times
@@Elle-gm9rt but the problem with the way she's executing this speech is that she sounds like a five year old who just learning the power of belief when she's been the industry for decades.........

This woman is simply phenomenal. A treasure. A true inspiration. May God continue to bless her in a mighty way.
No, THANK YOU, Sheryl Lee Ralph!!! This talk will be on repeat!!! 🔥⭐🧡
AND SAVED😊👍🏾❤️
Im going to listen to her everyday as my mediation 😢😢😢
Perfect to hear this today. I was feeling a sense of defeat after the SCOTUS ruling on AA. This made me feel much better and confident to keep up the fight and have my voice be heard.
Agreed
Her voice tone while talking makes you feel so peaceful
No. Mrs. Sheryl Lee Ralph “thank you.” This talk was so powerful, uplifting, and definitively appropriate; in a time and moment when people lack simple compassion and belief in possibilities. You are simply the best! I will keep on keeping on.
Lord knows I’ve been becoming who I truly am. Releasing myself from watered down versions of myself. And this journey has been tough. God believes in me, now it’s time for me to believe in me. No matter what the world says. Or thinks. I am who I am. Thank you Ms. Ralph for reminding me. Hopefully I’ll be able to tell you that in person
Her words speak volumes, belief is so important in every aspect of this age.
For someone who has difficulty in believing themselves I literally got enlighted and cried at the end of the video
For someone struggling with self doubt all her life and now realizing she needs something to do in fixing it, this was exactly what I needed to hear ❤
"i gave myself permission to take up space"... wow, i really love that!
So love the words this woman has shared with me today! Faith can make broken wings fly and we deserve to fly, too!
I lost my job, listening to this made me THINK, and BELIEVE IN MYSELF to put my resume and cover letter out there. Now I’m back to teaching and doing what I love!
Her Tom Cruise story so resonated with me. I often forget the positives about me because the negatives take up space in my mind. I'm learning to believe in me and my abilities, regardless of what is thought of me.
Tears man, just tears. She's incredible.
She just has confidence in how she carries herself. I have watched several Ted Talks and watched so many people speak that did well, but their nervousness showed a little more than the power of their speech. That's just what I have noticed over the years.
That’s called courage, being nervous and doing it anyway. You’re seeing courage.
It’s interesting to see how someone else views the nervousness and how it affects the speech. Personally, most likely because I resonate with it more, I love when they look/sound nervous. To me it’s very powerful to think about how scared they must be and they’re doing it anyway :)
@@astin3407unfortunately most of the world doesn’t see it this way.
When you are nervous it means you are not confident, and so the recipient(s) interpret your nervousness as weakness and makes them subconsciously already reject you/assume you don’t deserve it. Logically this makes sense, if u ask someone to do something dangerous it’s a good thing to detect their nervousness and then turn them down. It only sucks because it doesn’t work in our modern game of social politics.
There’s also a massive side effect where ignorance is viewed as confidence which leads to incompetent people being perceived highly and getting a yes.
@@carsonhunt4642 I agree. It feels as though if someone says something with any sliver of confidence, people will follow in masses without doing any research of their own.
@@carsonhunt4642yes thats called politics whether in office or college or family the less confident u are there the more adorable n family oriented society oriented... One high voice will be considered quareel attitude problem .. i have been facing this problem since college .. because i was always considered confident girl in school days i carried it further in college n society where it is perceived as rudeness n quarrel... Society and family like nervous and voiceless being .... It can only give u success in exams not more than that...😢

“Don’t ever give up on yourself.”
You strength, perseverance, faith and confidence is so inspiring!!!❤❤❤
Play this for our children. They need this!😊🎉❤
This tells why she became very successful 💯believe in yourself legends❤
I don't know her work but she's an incredible speaker. Wow. Blew me away.
She is so talented and inspirational! ♥️
She speaks so confidently. I couldn’t get my eyes and ears out of her. Her each and every words are so enthusiastic that it gives me goosebumps.
I also believe in myself but sometimes feels sad too but for a very short period. By believing in ourself we can achieve what we want in life.
On 12 November 2025 I will also speak in TEDx and inspire people by my life story.
Cheers to that
THE DESERVED COURAGE. The BEAUTY and POWER. THE INSPIRATION. THANK YOU...Queen❤
The opening and closing really giving the picture of confidence and every word naturally flow with an encouragement. Gonna take "think" for every aspect to take the positive. What a fantastic talk! Thank you!
ill get back to this video after 5 or 10 years and i will not stop believing in myself, i promise that, my mom just died and and i just broke up with someone, i was totally blown away this year but, i believe i can do this, ill keep on looking at the mirror to empower myself, its lonely but it will worrk things out...
Surely be one of the best Ted Talks
Ngl this really helps me on building up my self-confidence
Not to mention the intro of this Talk is actually cutting-edge
I seldom like videos but this will be one of my liked videos
“The Mighty Quinn” is one of her best performances in a movie ( with Denzel !).She has so many lessons for all who will listen. I knew ‘Abbott Elementary’ was phenomenally excellent from episode 1 and told everyone to watch (notwithstanding that I’m a teacher 😂).
Beautiful presentation! I love her energy. What a gift.
I must admit I didn't give her much credit for acting but, I realize I can be very judgmental even about myself. Thank you for representing not just black women but, West Indian women with all this talent, and the gift of confidence in your public speaking. Thank you for being on this earth, and by the way I loved your character in Sister Act 1 or 2.
Three things that we all must do in order to believe in ourselves
1. We need to see ourselves; really, truly, deeply see ourselves for who and what we are in order to believe in ourselves.
2. Think about ourselves in order to believe in ourselves.
3. We got to act like we believe in ourselves
I see myself
I think of myself
I act as is I believe in myself
This is so helpful, just what I needed❤
I think this might be the most meaningful Ted Talk I have Ever seen! God bless you
That's a Masterclass in authenticity! The wisdom she oozes...mmmmmh!
She is fantastic. This was so powerful. She has put a smile on myself. I'm going to listen again.
😭💐She got us doing the ugly cry and the happy cry all at once…. Phenomenal ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Me af right now
Frfr she is awesome
It’s inexcusable that I live in Vancouver and missed this. You are an outstanding human being, Ms. Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Me toooo
She truly is a gift to us. Amazing!
This just changed my life living in a space alone but never lonely and needing to know I will take up space in BELIEVING!! 🥹thank you. This was for me! Thank you Mama Sheryl
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Yaaassss 🎉 This is so appropriate wanted & Needed Thank you Mrs Sheryl Lee Ralph!!! I was about 7 yrs old, walking into the Beverly Center (A mall in California, circa '83)at the time there was a show on television called Fire Fox or either that was her character anyway, I was with my mother and as we walked in she was walking out and I did a double take with my mouth open not being able to utter a word, star struck I guess, and she looked back at me waved, smiled and gave me a wink!🤯 Her smile was so beautiful! It still is. Every time a baby or a small child notices me or we make eye contact I smile and give them a wink 🤗✌🏾
Her delivery, her tone, and her confidence is infectious! I’m so inspired🎉
This is prime example of living as elder. I hear her, genuinely. I love when the generations before us give love in the form passing the baton. She didn’t just take her position in first place and revel in her success. She takes time to share her story, reaching to all of us behind her and passing the baton so that we too can live in first place. Love me some aunty Sheryl!❤️
Her voice is so iconic 💜 I love it
Such a great installment. Would love to read a book written by her!👏🏾
Her role as Barbara in " A piece of the action" had me star struck! And all these years later she's even better😊🙏💕
I have never commented on a Ted talk, but this woman made me do it. Loved it! And feels like she planted an enthu seed in me that'll grow higher and higher no matter what!
10 years of Nos sound easy when a successful person shares their story. It's tough! What year are you in?
I love this talk because I am a Confidence Building Consultant and yet also going through a hard time.
Yep... we all need a check-up from the neck up.
Thé greatest relationship you’ll ever have is the one you have with yourself. ❤️🙏🏽
I always loved her so much on Moesha!! Regal is the perfect word to describe Sheryl ❤
"Faith causes broken wings to fly, and we deserve to soar"❤ .. OMG!Sheryl❤❤
I just love her so much, glad she's finally getting her flowers!! 🌻
"And i believed her, and it didn't hurt so much because i believed" ✨🥰
That introduction itself was so beautiful and gave me chills! 💕
I needed to see this... I started learning JavaScript this month... Today I got discouraged because I wasn’t understanding anything... I though of quitting. I’m going to be an amazing software engineer. The world will know me.... Aghanokpe Elohor Theresa, you’re going places and changing lives🎉
For her to take time and speak to us like that smh this is why we love her she’s a beautiful soul.
The best TED video i have ever seen
😢whoooo, this hit my 60 year old self on so many levels. Thank you Sheryl Lee Ralph.
I cried the whole time watching this! She is such an inspiration, it truly does start with loving who you see in the mirror and acting as so! Great speech! ♥
Oh Sheryl Lee Ralph! I am so sorry that you went through what you went through! Your Ted talk is indeed inspiring and very thought provoking as I too am a woman of colour and it gives me hope that some day I will receive my flowers 💐. Thank you 😊. I remember watching you in Moesha and you portrayed Dee's character so well. This has to be, by far one of the most impactful Ted talks recorded.
Wow. Such a powerful message. I’m loving her journey. It’s such an inspiration ❤❤❤❤
Is she from this planet ? What a wonderful woman... what a powerful message !
I love "The Wiz" reference at the end!❤❤❤ such a wonderful woman!
Iconic and so poignant ❤️💙☀️ Absolutely love her and wish her nothing but true happiness and bliss and much much more success she deserves it!!!
I remember watching her on “This is Living” and I was like she can act. I’m so happy she has received her flowers 💐 🌹
I don’t know how she did it, but she just convinced me in 15 minutes I’m able to achieve anything in life, if I start believing in myself. The energy she holds is contagious. I believe everybody needs this kind of positivity in their lives.
I'm on the stage of life where I need to restart or reinvent myself but I don't have the courage to do it. Until I stumbled upon this video. I love to see myself in the mirror with full confidence in the future.
Same here
Musical theater people are always so dramatic and bigger than life I love it 😊
I needed those words and I believe in myself now and the day forward!
i saved this video for when i needed it and it happened to be tonight. i've been studying for the mcat and its rough. her words made me cry and ima look in the mirror & remember what she said :,)
I have watched a lot of videos in Ted talks about boosting or improving my self confidence, and I could say from my preference that this is the BEST! VERY IMPOWERING💪
