      Interesting story:
Kennedy actually initially proposed a joint mission to the moon with the soviets, he mentioned this is another speech. Initially Kruschev declined the offer but eventually he changed his mind and was about to accept kennedy's offer.
But unfortunately Kennedy was assassinated soon after and kruschev didn't trust the new president and the dream of a joint mission to the moon Americans and Soviets side by side died with him.
It is quite sad to think about the possibilities if that mission was carried out, it not only would have been a HUGE step forward in space exploration but also may have eased relations and ushered in a new era of cooperation and humanity advancing forward together as a species.

for the record, this comment wasn't made in support or against any candidate. instead, its that if you want to America to seem like its the top of the world, funding needs to go into sciences. Its about being the pioneer, to champion new technology and lead humanity into a greater future. It will naturally attracted the greatest minds not just in science, but in business, who will help get the jobs part of it moving by wanting to take advantage of any new technology.

One of the few spots in the internet where nobody sees this as negative. This man and his speech kicked off one of the greatest stories in humanity, when we finally left our planet and reached for the stars. It’s a shame that we never continued with this pride and commitment, luckily new pioneers are out there following in the footsteps of past explorers. For me, it envokes both awe and disgust.
On one side: Propaganda, Nationalism and fuel for the Cold War. Billons of dollars spent to win the Space War while the country was in the swing of the civil rights era.
The other: space is cool these big ol brains of ours that got us there. Its beautiful and enticing to think of space let alone venture there.

I'm Canadian, but I live on the border with the United States, so we were in tune with your news, and your ventures
But when President John Kennedy, said we will go to the moon before the end of the decade he threw down the gauntlet, and woke up a fire in the people of the United States.
Every technician, every scientist, right down to the janitors at NASA, had one thing on their mind as they worked,it was him.
The United States would have walked to the moon, that's the intensity that was sparked in the people.
That's when the United States was great. Never mind the achievement but the commitment.
I was in grade 3 , that day of the assassination, and I could feel that something had changed in the United States.
    And it started to decline.

This speech is about how hungry mankind is for exploration and knowledge, and how we will never stop in this quest, no matter how many say that the end is not worth the means. His comment is saying that for those who question if it’s really worth all this money, time, and energy to explore the unknown when it would appear we can be perfectly content with what little we know and own, this speech will put an end to that question. The comment in no way references the moon landing hoax.

I was in grade's 3 to 6 over the year's of the Apollo launch's. Our teacher would bring in the TV and many of the classes would congregate around to watch it live. Those historic moments were; and remained a touchstone of inspiration for much of what I have accomplished in my own life. Into my teenage years, I began to understand why my own parents and their generation would have their own moment of silence on November 22nd each year. One of the most prized book's in my library is Theodore C. Sorensen's biography on President Kennedy. Mr. Sorensen dedicated this book to his father; "who showed me the way". We chose the pursuit for greater profit over the raising of all mankind and we listened to the siren song of "individualism" and ego over cooperation and common virtue. What took 30 years; our rise from Skid Row to Tranquility Base took an equal 30 years to go back to Skid Row with the addition of fear and loathing of people who we have been led to believe are "not like us".How are they "not like us"? Do they not bleed? Do they not breathe the same air, love, laugh and live just like we do? Will they not die and return to dust, just as we will? In that speech in 1962, President Kennedy called to our courage, our highest aspirations not only as Americans, but also as human beings. Even in the midst of the Civil Rights struggles, our budding conflict in Vietnam, the Cold War against the Soviet Union, he appealed to the best of us. Boldly, audaciously and with some humor. We as people can CHOOSE greatness or infamy but we must choose.

If there's one thing I learned watching this speech, it's to do things the most challenging for the sake of learning and pushing our comfort zone out further. A lot of the things achieved at that time weren't easy to do requiring a lot of research and it shows how far us as humans can go after realizing that it works.

We choose to go to the Moon! We choose to go to the Moon...We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win, and the others, too.

What a speech! After having seen the launch of my country's mission to land a probe on the moon, the Chandrayaan 3, I wanted to remind myself of how it all began. This was the high point of our species. An endeavour in peace and of aspiration, a challenge which was not a country against the enemy country, but mankind against the universe. A challenge too great for our species. The greatest adventure we ever embarked on. And yet NASA pulled it off. With those beautiful Saturn V rockets. The US at its greatest in my opinion... and they inspired the world and brought the world together. July 1969 truly was a high point for man.

The amount of passion you feel in his voice is unreal. He can say whatever he wants and that voice will be enough make us believe in everything he says

Maybe the greatest orator, so captivating, the power of that voice. I can't help but be filled with sadness seeing this and knowing we only saw a fraction of his potential. JFK & RFK rest in peace, killed by the establishment.

JFK was a great orator. Politics aside, Reagan was a pretty great orator as well, in a different way no doubt. Listen to his challenger disaster speech. Powerful.

"Why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago did we fly the Atlantic?" And the best part... "Why does Rice play Texas!" Even when he was speaking about such lofty goals like going to the moon, he knew how to appeal to the regular person.
