Also many many many GoPro cameras will simply REFUSE to use the external power (It will ONLY use the internal battery, and the externally connected power will NOT even charge the internal battery while the camera is recording)
Thanks for making this video. I have been using my go-pro for a while now by plugging it into a USB port I installed in my kayak that runs from my fish finder battery. It powers by finder and camera all day, but I've hated knowing my camera was exposed to the elements and could potentially be ruined should i get caught in rain or happen flip my kayak. Thanks to this video I learned of the 3BR case and have one on the way to me now.
“It made filming” AND FISHING “a nightmare” lol. As a new guy to filming while kayaking, it has been a bit of a buzz kill lol. Each time out though I do learn something new. Videos like this are great, now I need to go find that same battery box so I can put the battery swap time waste and stress behind me lol. Technically I could plug a double usb lighter plug in that box too and get more usb connections to power my camera lights for longer. Sold! I use the Insta360 RS camera and now you have me curious If mine will power on with out the battery attached lol.
Also imany many GoPro cameras will simply REFUSE to use the external power (It will ONLY use the internal battery, and the externally connected power will NOT even charge the internal battery while the camera is recording)
Thanks for the great tips 👍🏼 I currently use a RAM Tough Claw . It’s a clamp on mount I share between my motorcycle handlebars and the rim of my kayak cockpit since I can’t kayak & ride at the same time. Holy cr*p , the no battery tip is golden !!
Great video Christine . I usually take 6 GoPro batteries with me when I’m out making fishing videos and it never fails , battery dies at the most inopportune times. Will have to check out the Dakota Lithium and that 3BR external power kit. Thanks for the info.
@@kristinefischer2289 Same here. I have been running them (on ext. battery) since October last year up until my last kayak trip on 2/4/20 and had not had any issues thus far. I probably won't get the opportunity to test them this summer on my yak though.
Great video. Also it is good that you took out the internal battery while your GoPro is powered by external power, or else many many many GoPro cameras will simply REFUSE to use the external power (It will ONLY use the internal battery, and the externally connected power will NOT even charge the internal battery while the camera is recording)
Hey, thanks for presenting this info in such an organized and coherent form. A real change from some of the you tube crud out there. Good job and now I’m a subscriber.
Great tip w the battery out! No backup if your power goes out of course, but you can't have everything. LOL. NOTE, we had some carbon fibre rigs for our cameras at one time, they DO GET BRITTLE after a while, so be warned. Depending on the cf makeup, your gopro may end up in the drink.. so be careful. We've since gone to soley aluminium, and not carbon fibre.
Ive found the hero 8 has a very capable mic. Im just trying to find a way to minimize wind noise, the built in wind reduction setting doesnt really seem to do much. Great vid.
Thanks very much, Kristen, I love your detail and the information provided. Would you mind please clarifying where to buy the 47-inch tough pole? Thanks
I've been looking for a better mounting location than my blackpack on the rear camera. Thanks for showing the RAM Tough Track for the H-rail. Just found it on their website. Hope the Hobie series can still make its way out to CA later this year.
Subscribed! Great info! I love getting new ideas on how to film in a kayak. How do you stay waterproof with the Dakota battery though? It seems like water could splash up and hit the USB connection?
When you are using only one of the UBS ports in the battery box, say for your camera, is the other port at risk to the elements as it no longer is covered by the protective cap. Thanks
The battery compartment was open in the video... for show? I’m assuming that in order for it to be water tight there is a cover to close it up right? That no battery tip was great. I never would’ve thought that would’ve made that much difference. Tight lines and stay safe out there!!
So you would need the external case to keep the external mics or any other external from not getting wet? I am just trying to figure out what the external case is for because I thought the GoPro was waterproof by itself. I just need some clarification is all even though it was addressed in the video. Thanks.
I believe it’s just for the 8. I’ll put links to their site in the description- for my fours, I used a purple panda lapel on amazon. With the 8, I haven’t ever had to use a mic
go to a pharmacy..... they have silicone ear plugs that look like caugh drops....you can mold them to cover the gap without leaving any residue in your electronics...worked fine for me on Saturday
How many amp hours will the hero 8 use up on a full 7 hour day of fishing? Thinking about running off of my 100ah lipo4 in my min kota trolling motor power station via 12dc outlet.
Hi Kristine! Thank you for providing tips on all day filming with your GoPro Hero 8. Do you use 256gb memory cards in each camera? Thank you in advance for your response. Tight lines and hopefully one day I will see you and AJ at a future event.
Great video. I've been playing with my GoPro 6 and use the same Ram Mount. What I've found is that a lot of the boat noise, clunking, pedaling etc seems to get transferred through the mount to the camera. I don't even hear those noises happening so they aren't loud but are very noticeable on the videos. Do you have any issues with this? By the way, we sell those Dakota Lithium Power Boxes at Outdoor Emporium in Seattle.
FYI Don't upgrade to the GOPRO 10 if you want to run all day without the battery in. I received mine today and if the battery is out and running on external power, neither the front or rear screen will be active. It will shutoff the screen. As soon as you stop recording, they come back on. If you put the battery in and use external power, they will stay lit during recording. I have the 9 and it doesn't work this way so its new to the 10.
Just got an update from GOPRO support > "Thanks for waiting, **** 5:41pm As I check here internally, if the HERO10 camera is being used while recording without the battery, the LCD display will turn off automatically to help with heat dissipation. When the recording is stopped, there are times also that you'll receive Cold Battery Alert. 5:42pm This issue will be fixed in the firmware update due to be released on November 16th."
iamjabr Try using the 5 minute loop function on the go pro. I film muskie fishing quite a bit and it works perfect for that. Saves the video in 1 minute intervals as well which is nice for editing.
This video is awesome, quick question for anyone, has anybody tried using a yakpower system to power their gopros? It would be nice if I could plug my gopro wire directly into an outlet in my hull that connects to my 24ah accessory battery.
With the Gopro housing is there an ability to hook up external mics as well and power? Or is one or the other! Like the tip on the battery I have to try that
Awesome info! Question....how often do you start and stop recording?? Is it better to get 100 small clips or just keep recording to get several really large clips?? I’m just wondering for editing purposes. Thx and love your channel👍👍
Hi Kristine. Thanks for the tips. I run a similar setup on the Hero7’s but I run them off of a single Nocqua 10ah battery. What is your audio recording solution out on the water? I currently use a Tascam DR10L and I’m trying to go to the Rode Wireless Go, but running into compatibility issues with the GoPro wifi.
Kristine Fischer Wow, that’s great. So I imagine the 8 is in front of you and facing you....and you use that audio. Or are you saying that the 8 is mounted behind you on that long Ram Mount and you’re using the audio from it?
That overheating tip with no battery was AMAZING! thanks!
Also many many many GoPro cameras will simply REFUSE to use the external power (It will ONLY use the internal battery, and the externally connected power will NOT even charge the internal battery while the camera is recording)
Thank you for this post. I believe you are the FIRST to offer this very relevant information!

I have questions about your gopro setting.
Do you make a video with 4k/60fps??
How do you set your gopro??

You’re probably spot on withbthat !
Thank you for the advice

Hi Kristine! Thank you for providing tips on all day filming with your GoPro Hero 8. Do you use 256gb memory cards in each camera? Thank you in advance for your response. Tight lines and hopefully one day I will see you and AJ at a future event.
